because me, personally, it's
not a safe move as a survivalist.

out in the real world...

This is nothing new to me.

It is intense and insane

approaching across the bayou,

the team of Matt, Rylie and Ryan

have seen their
food supply dwindle...

rodent is causing big problems

for Matt and Ryan.

fish trout and re-bait it

with some crawfish
if we find some.

Matt and I have a nutria itch,

it's a bacteria that the nutria
rodent release through their feces.

And keeps me out of the water.

So now we can't actively cross
the creek and explore different areas.

It's just putting a huge
handicap on this group

and our chances of getting food.

[Rylie] I don't think
there's anything.

[Matt] Don't hear anything
flipping and flopping.

[Rylie] No, nothing in
there. Still stinks, though.

[Ryan] What a drag.

Yeah. Well, let's hope
a deer comes lurking...

- ...'cause that still looks juicy right there.

Come check on this
after a little bit today.

This right here
is a nutria trail.

- Oh, yeah?
- Yep.

These nutria tracks look
very similar to a raccoon.

It has some webbing on its feet.

That's a ten-pound thing.

This is a solid... Like
rabbit size, at least.

- [Ryan] And those are fresh tracks.
- Oh, they're very fresh.

[Matt] I just found a whole
bunch of nutria tracks

which is huge.

Been looking for
this now for 17 days.

This is a straight-up
nutria path.

[Matt] So where does it go?

I have a feeling he walks
down this log right here,

then echoes into this grass
through that other stump.

So this right here,
check that out.

Oh, wow.

- So you could see where he's...
- yeah.

He's climbing up here,

he's going through this
whole vegetative area.

This is his standard path

which indicates that there's
a nutria den somewhere,

somewhere these nutria, like,
digging holes, like many other rodents.

[Matt] Though nutria
is a nocturnal rodent.

Well, that's an advantage
for us in some ways because

if we figure out
where he's hiding,

we can ambush him.

- It's all hollow in there, isn't it?
- Yeah.

That's his hole right there.

I would almost gamble

to bet he's in this hollow part
right now, just hunkered in there.

[Rylie] Just smoke him out here.

We blow a fire in that hole,

and it's gonna smoke like a
perfect chimney up that thing.

[Rylie] Yeah, it is.

Let's go back and we'll carry that fire
over on a palm frond leaf or something.

Yeah.

[Rylie] The weather
feels like it's turning a bit,

and now... we're definitely
dealing with a winter climate.

We don't know where
the resources are

or if they will return...

So to see signs of a nutria,

hopefully we can take advantage
of that before another cold snap.

All right. Well, let's
come up, get some fire.

Operation nutria.

Let the battle begin.

miles to the east,

Jeff and Steven finally
landed the big score they need.

entire challenge for us.

Our bellies are still full.

- I'm gonna work on the tree-smoker.

Hopefully I can keep
that thing chugging all day.

I'm just gonna finish
processing all that meat today.

- Sounds like a game plan.

[Jeff] Mondo, the monster
alligator, we got him

and we've spent
the last 48 hours

butchering, prepping,
field-dressing and smoking

probably well over
60 pounds of meat.

We got a smorgasbord right here.

I'm literally gonna let it
smoke here all day long.

I'm gonna string up some of the
meat that we already have prepped,

and all this smoke is going
to cure that and it into jerky.

So... another busy day.

- We're getting flies out here.
- This is what we didn't want.

The flies are
starting to come out.

We know the clock's ticking.

We have to prep this meat.

And we're gonna have two
smokers working simultaneously.

We are working as fast
as we can this morning.

All right. There we go.

The tree-trunk smoker, it's
going to be smoking meat

all day long.

[Chuckles] And it's already
starting to come out the top.

Beautiful.

[Jeff] Steven is hanging
me inside the shelter.

Basically turning out shelter
into a meat-smoking machine.

We've got quite the
setup going here.

As you can see, the meat in here

already is starting to
have a nice crust to it.

[Coughs, laughs] It's
freaking wonderful.

I'm choking on the
smoked flavor of our meat.

[Sighs] Ah.

Mondo, the kill of our lives.

We can carry this energy level
through an entire 60-day-challenge.

We are the primary predators
out here in this swamp.

That's definitely

This whole time I've
been telling Steven,

'em in my mouth...

I don't even care. I'm
gonna eat his balls."

And... it's a female.

There's a little part
of me that's grateful

that we didn't find
any balls on this guy.

We have so much delicious meat.

I'm gonna stick to ribs.

For nutria, we need weapons.

Unfortunately, this nutria itch

keeps me from
getting in the water.

So even though I can't go
wade through the swamp,

I can get us food.

When it comes to game
animals, the hunt is on.

And I have never wanted to
hunt a nutria more in my entire life.

It is my nemesis right now.

Let Rylie feed it

and then, Ryan, you and I will
assume some positions here.

And if he comes, pokes
his head out this crack,

I'll stick him to the log.

Soon as this gets where the
smoke starts coming out at the top,

you need to be as
quiet as possible

and he'll hopefully peak his little
head out hoping to get some better air.

- We got flame.
- Cook him out, girl.

The smoke's starting to come
out of that hole over there.

- [Rylie] Is it?

He's gotta be
feeling the heat too.

[Rylie] It's smoky
as hell over here.

[Matt] Come on,

going as long as I can.

Or he could just be chilling in
the end, like, the end of his hallway.

so he can feel anything.

I mean, he would have
to be in this little four-foot,

I don't know.

[Matt] We smoked the
hell out of this tree just now,

and that nutria
is just not in it.

We gave it a damn hell of a try.

You think we could set up a
snare on that little game path

We tried to smoke it out,

that didn't work because we
figured out that he wasn't home.

But we know where this thing
is, we know where it's living,

and we have a good
chance at snaring this nutria.

Going bit on the weak side.

at a 100% right now.

after seeing both his partners
succumb to the elements...

It's a daunting task.

Who knows how this
journey is truly gonna end?

It's been a couple of days
since I've had a good meal now.

And now that I'm a lone wolf,

if I don't get food, it's on me.

get out there and get after some food.

That was a male alligator.

growl, the bigger the alligator.

That means at least ten feet...

He's freaking big.

I think that might not
have been mondo.

That might have been his
big fat girlfriend that we ate.

And now he's looking for her.

That's why he's calling her.

An alligator that big is gonna defend
his territory from anything and anybody.

Not just alligators but us too.

[Growling grows louder]

know this is his territory.

We definitely have
to be more vigilant...

- Getting in the water, walking down to the...

morning and in the afternoon.

[Amber] The meat is so
spoiled, you can smell it.

[Gary] Oh, yeah, the meat's bad.

[Max] It's been a week.

I think six days
is my threshold.

Unless it's, like,
properly smoked.

[Amber] We've eaten every part
of the gator except for his hands.

Really need to catch more fish.

water ripe, maggots coming off of it.

bait, and I guarantee you

we're going to
catch a fish with it.

one, I'm gonna throw it about 35 feet.

her line, she's a savage fisher.

She's putting in the work that needs
to be done in order for us to succeed.

[Amber] We need to
get some more catfish,

we have to get
food in our bellies,

because we're worried that
Gary is gonna eat something

really crazy and
poisons himself.

I mean, shoot. These
are my family out here,

Gary and Max, and I'll
always provide for them.

Like to catch, like, 20 catfish.

All right. I'm gonna
go set this nutria snare.

- I won't be long.

What I've got here is all
the pieces for a spring-snare.

I like to do a constrictor knot, so
when it tightens up on that animal,

it's not gonna come loose, and the more
they struggle, the tighter it's gonna get.

Right here, you've got
your notched-out little toggle.

So this notch on your toggle
is gonna fit right in here,

into the notch, with the stake.

And this stake's gonna
be planted into the ground.

So you take your stake,
jam it into the ground,

you've got your noose.

Then you wanna take
this and tie it to the tree.

Take your little
notch on your toggle,

put it into the notch on your
stake, and let go of the tree.

Now, you wanna open up
the noose over the game path,

find yourself a
little Y stick like this,

and all you wanna
do is open up that hole.

He's gonna come
in here, trigger that,

and his arm just, he's just
gonna go straight up into the air.

And he'll just be
dangling there.

So I've got my pieces,
I've got the snare,

I just need to take it
down to this nutria path,

and hopefully, it'll work
tonight on this nutria.

When you get to be so
close to a male alligator

vocalizing in this way,

I mean, it makes the hair stand
up on the back of your neck.

This gator, he could
be ten, 12 feet long.

This is a true man-eater.

He's a monster, for sure.

[Jeff] Yeah, man. We
need to go after him.

[Steven] The food sources out here,
a majority of them are cold-blooded.

And once that cold
weather really hits,

all those alligators
are gonna go dormant.

The snakes are gonna go dormant.

The fishing's even gonna
become more difficult.

So, we need to get as much
protein and food stockpiled as we can,

coming into these colder months.

I got a nice, big
hunk of liver and fat.

[Sniffs]

It smells terrible. [Chuckles]

But, uh, I don't know,
if I was an alligator,

that looks pretty yummy.

Our alligator mondo, um,

happens to be a female.

She is great bait out there

for a husband, or
boyfriends out there.

That's gonna bring him in to
kind of check out what's going on.

And we'll probably
end up getting him next.

I gotta keep my
head on a swivel,

trust my instincts and
make sure I don't end up

being swamp thing's breakfast.

There's something
moving around out there.

Where did that creepy shadow go?

[EJ] Drop hook.

they're around here somewhere.

Now that I've got
some food in my belly,

I want to scout out
some more spots

so I can find better
hunting grounds

than what I've been subject to.

You wanna eat, you
gotta get out there

and you gotta be
out there every day.

That's the only way you can take care
of yourself in an environment like this.

That's a deer track.
That's fairly fresh.

I kind of see where it looks like
there's a little bit of a game trail.

Because of the cold, the water
level's significantly dropped.

So, because I can see
some high ground here,

I bet you the deer just
crossing the water over here,

for whatever reason,
that come over here,

graze, maybe get a drink.

So if this deer's
coming through here,

this is a... what we call in
the military a "choke point."

And if I find a
really good spot,

I can get a clear shot of 'em
coming right up through here.

This is actually the first
time I see deer tracks.

This is a good sign. I may
have found the honeypot.

I think I see something.

Moccas... moccasin.

see what he's gonna do.

Water moccasin is a
nasty, venomous snake.

It will chase you and it

Yesterday, after I ate
a bunch of alligator,

my tummy got a
little, like, nauseous.

But feels good now.

But if we tap into an
alternate food source,

it could be a game-changer.

Gotta look for
alligators, of course.

There's a definite
risk, for real,

of us out there,
swimming in that water.

I mean, we just pulled an eight-foot
alligator out of here the other day.

They basically can
rip you to shreds.

I'm just making sure there's

We all know that animals, they're
far more in tune with the environment

And, uh, to see there absolutely

something bad is coming,

in terms of maybe a storm,

or whether this means

that animals are just starting
to slow down for the winter.

Either one would be devastating.

[Amber] I want this overcast to
go away so I can get in the water.

another little weather,

weather something,
next couple of days.

I'm a little sketched. I can
feel that the winds have shifted.

And it's bringing,
like, a cooler front.

getting cold out here.

And so, we're, you
know, stockpiling firewood,

which is like a furnace,

because I get the big, hard
wood, so work like furnaces.

for any inclement weather.

We gotta be able to not
shiver through the night.

We need to be able to stay warm.

In all my challenges, I've never
dealt with that severe temperature.

I'm not sure what's
going on. It's a lot of pain.

- [Max] Are you okay?
- [Amber] I don't know.

Hoping it's not broken.

[Gary] We made
it through the night.

Amber had this big log
fall on her toe last night.

- And, uh, it hurt bad.
- It hurt really bad.

- She seems to be doing okay, though, right?
- Yep!

[Amber] Those two toes got smashed.
They're still swollen from the log.

I'm looking at them. They are
not broken, burnt, torn, bleeding.

They survived a 200-pound
log dropping on them.

- She's tough.
- It's, like, purple on the end, but I'm okay.

- [Amber] No tears were shed.
- [Gary] No tears were shed.

[Gary] Just gotta keep going.

[Amber] This is definitely mind
over matter, sucking up the pain,

is what's really going on.

It doesn't matter how much pain
you're in, you just got a mission.

You've got to complete it.

So I'm staying
positive with this

and just gonna work hard
and just let my body heal it.

Hurts to walk.

[EJ] Last night, it
was a very long night.

It was cold. I had to
tend the fire myself,

which is, you know, something
that's just part of the deal now.

I had three pelts.

I went through half
of my reserve firewood

after I burnt through
everything I had for the night.

Either one of the
girls were still here,

they wouldn't have
been this morning.

'Cause that... that
was, uh, bone-chilling.

I'm seriously concerned a
bit about this cold weather.

If these nights keep dragging
on, and getting colder and colder,

that's gonna put a damper
on trying to even find any food.

Now that it's cold, a deer
would be a great resource

for the fact of its pelt.

And I'm gonna need
some meat smoked

for the days I can't get something,
the days it's too cold maybe to go out.

So the focus now is get
a big game kill, a chance

to get some solid
food that will last me

for the long-term
to go the 60 days.

Next, smoker.

When I'm gonna
bring in the big game,

I will have to process it,

get it smoked or
cooked all by myself.

So I need to have
everything set up

before I even go on the hunt.

So I'm making a smoker,
we'll have a cook area,

that's survival 101.

This should be perfect.

You gotta have a smoker.

Love it when a
plan comes together.

Long-term survival is about
planning and being prepared.

I plan the day I'm
gonna go on the hunt.

Gonna go early in the morning
and then find a perfect spot.

All the conditions are
set for me to get a big kill.

That looks pretty good.

Luckily there's still
a lot of water left.

Yesterday was a cold one.

It's so cold that
it's just ridiculous.

We have been hit with
a hard, hard cold snap.

Things hibernate, they
go away, they go to sleep,

and we're almost
set up for failure.

I'm just praying to the universe

that the spring snare works.

nutria snare last night.

First time I've ever set
an actual spring snare.

We set it on that nutria
path that was, like, a highway.

And we are now, all three

on our way to check
the spring snare.

This might be big breakfast.

the trap. It's still alive.

the entire back wall

of our fireplace just collapses.

It was crazy how
much chillier it got

We're gonna have to put some repairs
together today and get that sealed back up.

It gives us enough energy to

Once we build a strong lattice
framework to cover the hole,

more painful and torturous,

than a cold winter rain

while you're naked and
hungry out in the wild.

The grass, it's a lot
thicker than it even looks.

Let me grab a bunch of
this kind of stuff first, though.

We'll do the palm fronds last.

[Jeff] We're doing three
main layers of our shelter.

Layer one is gonna be
all the cut down grasses.

This is thick, heavy,
dense material

that will keep the water
and the moisture out,

while also retaining
heat inside the shelter.

Then we're gonna
put on the willows

and the palms.

And these two layers
are gonna be critical

in preventing water from
getting into this shelter.

This is gonna be the
rain buffer of our room.

This is something
that has to be done.

We can't keep risking

having a torrential downpour
and us getting wet and tired,

and losing our fire.

If we get in that position,
hypothermia's a real thing.

It's really starting to hit me

that I'm absolutely, completely

Trying not to be but the tinder
bundles are kinda damp from the rain.

we have to try to get to get
food every step of the way.
