in Ecuador for 32 days.

but my biggest regret

from the previous challenge
was not vocalizing my emotions

My last "XL" challenge was
in the Amazon of Ecuador.

I didn't expect to see you
up a tree on the first day.

Yeah, neither did I.

First tree climb.

Not as young as I thought I was.

It was shortest time anybody
ever had on any "XL" challenge.

I was there for 4 hours.

Oh! Ah! Aah! Aah!

That ain't good.

To have gotten hurt so
quickly, it was devastating.

It's the first thing
I feel I failed at,

and I have a scar that reminds
me of it every damn day.

I think that I got to
get back out here

and make that scar
mean something.

I don't even see a beach.

If the boat ain't getting there,

how the hell are
we getting there?

Swim, baby, swim.

This is my last
chance because I'm 57,

the oldest one to do this.

The help of luck and god,

I'll be the oldest
one to complete it.

I haven't swam
since my operation.

We'll see if I can do it.

I can only hope Russell is there

when I need him to
help me get through it

because my life wouldn't
have been complete

without this opportunity,
and I won't quit.

and on my recent challenge,

I was in South Africa.

Some big old hog holes in.

I put myself in the danger zone.

Africa was one tough bastard.

I had a spear, but I
couldn't kill nothing.

On top of that, nighttime,
it was extremely cold.

Damn lightning everywhere,

look like it'd strike you
in the head any minute.

But the hardest thing in my
South Africa challenge was,

I'd say, the mental part.

Trying to stay strong for
the team, but it's tough.

Just missing my kids.

I love my babies, and I
couldn't get them out of my head.

I died last night.

Man, don't, Duck.
I've done this.

My kids want to see me succeed,

but it's going to
be way different.

the survivalists were assigned
primitive survival ratings,

or psrs, that measured

their individual skills
and survival methods,

but for this 40-day
group challenge,

experts have evaluated
their initial psrs

and assigned the
team a combined rating,

or XLR, that gauges
their progress

and likelihood of success.

With 103 days of
"Naked and Afraid"

survival experience
between them,

the redemption team
brings exceptional hunting

and fishing skills to the table,

but has yet to prove
they can make it 40 days.

They earn an initial
"XL" rating of 7.4.

But this road to redemption
is the most treacherous yet...

miles beyond the coastline,

the waters of the
South China sea

are home to some of the
world's deadliest predators.

The aggressive gray reef shark
hunts in groups as large as 20.

With its fang-like teeth,

the great barracuda can swim
at speeds up to 25 miles per hour,

and the deceptively
deadly blue-ring octopus

carries enough venom to
kill 26 humans within minutes.

For those brave
enough to venture in,

danger lurks just beneath
the water's surface.

There's poisonous snakes.

I mean, the most venomous
snake on the planet is in the water.

You know, it's just that
potential of getting food,

get to do what you got to do.

you can get a swell come in,

or you have an undertow

for snorkeling in,

but it can pull you
out, pull you out.

don't swim a ocean.

There got to be
sharks out there.

Narrator: The second trio to
enter the vast South China sea

is the team of Duke,
James, and Gabrielle.

Everything in this water
can kill you, it sounds like.

The locals think no one
could survive out here.

I mean, we have
octopuses that can kill you,

snails that can kill you.

Gabrielle: My name is Gabrielle.

My history with
"Naked and Afraid"

began with 14-day sand challenge

on the wild coast
of South Africa...

Look. There's one right there.

- Oh, nice.
- Sorry, buddy.

I spent 14 days sleeping
in a freezing-cold cave.

If I tap out, it's going to
be something like this.

My partner, Jonathan, he
really hated the experience.

Oh, it hurts so bad.

It definitely puts a lot of
weight on my shoulders,

and my shoulders
are becoming weak.

But I completed the challenge
with 9 more days solo,

and I learned that
I'm a lot tougher

than I ever gave
myself credit for.

There's my truck.

And then, for my
21-day challenge,

I ended up in the
Mississippi bayou.

I got a flood.

Welcome to bayou.

And my partner, Brian, was a
talker, not necessarily a doer.

I'm going to collect
some roofing material.

You go ahead.

I'm freaking
exhausted right now.

He tapped out 7 days in.

I hate this place.

Think I'm the black widow
of "Naked and Afraid."

No man wants to stay
with me more than 7 days.

glutton for punishment,

to complete this one.

South China sea
is a long way away

from a Mississippi
swamp, you know?

This is a completely
different circumstance.

Duke: It's so lush here,

but with all those resources
come a lot more risks.

We're going to have a
lot more at our disposal

but a lot more threatening
us at the same time.

My name is Duke,
and my last challenge

was in central
swamps of Florida.

It was beautiful but
pretty treacherous.

We had a lot of moisture
there for all the insects to thrive

and just go crazy on us.

Ugh. Ow.

Ow. Oh, god.

Yellow jackets, man.

Getting stung point-blank
on your under junk,

it's probably one of
the least joyful things

I've ever experienced.

It was gnarly, but also we
had a hurricane come through.

[ Wind howling ]

The storm completely
changed the fish.

They've been flushed
out or displaced.

No fish.

Because the hurricane
just wiped everything out,

we learned having
improvisational skills

to change your
approach to something.

I think that's more valuable
than anything else out here.

It's not survival
of the fittest.

It's survival of those most
willing to adapt to change.

Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

Duke: Here in the
Philippines archipelago,

much different environment
than Florida because it's fickle.

There are these
sudden violent changes.

Say you get a squall blowing
in, could get a mini-typhoon

where you have an undertow
that could drag you out.

So rich, it's so lush, but
it's precarious as hell.

And it's really happening!

This is a whole
new beast right here.

James: There are some
serious predators out there.

I mean, there are sea
snakes out here that'll kill you.

I mean, one bite, you're dead.

It's not out of the challenge.

It's at the graveyard.

I'm James.

I completed my 21
days in Nicaragua.

I was a replacement for the male
partner who tapped after 4 days.

Did you come early to
make camp or something?

Oh, my god.

And being able
to find food to feed

Leah and myself, that
made me feel good.

Three big fish, two little
ones, compliments of James.

Then the rains start.

And after 2 days,
she was telling me

she was going to have to go,

and she wouldn't
be talked out of it.

I spent 19 days alone.

Doggone.

Get back. Get.

Didn't make it easy.

Then the first flood hits.

Then the second one hit,

and it washed all the fish out.

Yeah, what's that?

I don't freaking care!

I'm an architect.

I'm always trying to turn
every obstacle into a success.

Now that our dry
creek bed is a stream,

some of the fish from the lake
may have been going in there.

On my own, I successfully
completed a challenge,

and it really felt good.

After doing the 21-day, I
can't imagine not doing this.

Now I'm 51, and I'm going to
show that I can come out here

with the 20-somethings
and kick butt just like they do,

and I'll be here 40
days later, guarantee it.

Narrator: Because of
their high survival IQ

and the flexibility to adapt
to changing circumstances,

problem-solvers

but the South China
sea offers new challenges

paradise, this place can be hell.

During the rainy season,
daily showers are a fact of life.

clouds are rolling in.

Unpredictable tropical
storms can ravage the island

with torrential rainfall,
hypothermic temperature drops,

and typhoon-force winds
pushing 200 miles per hour.

We have a leaky shelter.

The wind just changed direction,

blowing more rain
right into the shelter.

is the all-female group of

Water, water everywhere,

I'm trying to find the upside
here, looking pretty dreary.

Rylie: I'm Rylie, and I was
in Honduras for 21 days.

- Snake.
- Big one.

Yeah. This jungle is [bleep]

The conditions were so wet
that everything I knew about

making a fire and maintaining
a fire was challenged.

It's not going.

I was freezing every night.

I couldn't sleep.

[ Thunder crashes ]

It was really trying on me
mentally and emotionally,

and 9 days into the challenge,

my partner decided it
was just too much and left.

I'm tapping out, okay?

So I did about 11
full days by myself.

In my regular life, I'm a loner,
so I figured being by myself

meant I could make sure
things were done right.

Off to look for grubs.

But I realized that, on
a survival standpoint,

being alone is hugely crippling
because not having a partner

meant I didn't have
an extra pair of hands.

I didn't have the
extra energy to burn.

Oh, my god. I found one.

Yeah.

And every night
that I stayed awake

shivering I had to tell myself,
"all this suffering, all this

hoping and fighting
for every inch,

it's all going to mean
nothing if you give up,"

and that's what made
me push forward.

Yes.

Yes.

I feel really confident
with this challenge.

I know that I can be
tougher than my environment.

I can last longer than
people expect I can.

Working in a group
dynamic though,

I think I will
struggle with that,

but I will see how far I can go

because so far I've
been doing all right.

This sea is choppy like this.

- Can't swim around it.
- You cannot swim.

You cannot risk being
smashed up against the rocks.

My name is manu, and 5 years ago

I was in Panama.

We have a waterfall.

Oh!

Manu: We started off with
two, and then we became four,

so I do have experience
with group survival.

We have all day to do a shelter.

I feel that we do not have
time to rest and take a nap.

You should probably
take a nap as well,

make you a little bit happier.

But towards the
end of the challenge

I started feeling this intense
pain coming through my body.

Mm, my head.

But it was the will
that I was almost there,

and nothing was
going to stop me,

and I just stuck at
it, and I persevered.

- Seriously, manu?

And it was the best
learning life experience

I'll ever have.

But after the Panama challenge,

I was diagnosed with
hemorrhagic dengue fever,

and not a lot of people
survive through it.

I'm in a lot of pain.

I then had to face almost a
year of intense physical therapy

because I had lost
my ability to walk,

but I'm a survivor,
and I'm here to prove

that you can overcome
anything if you put your mind to it.

This is the China sea.

It's no joke.

This is a hostile environment.

You've got to worry
about undercurrent

and being exposed
to the torrential rain,

so I'm going to have to
find that internal strength

to be able to overcome it.

Christina: Oh, yeah, this place
has the potential to get really nasty.

You can just tell.

I can't see anything.

My name is Christina,
and the last time

I was on "Naked and Afraid,"
I was in the Mexican jungle.

Four years ago I considered
myself a really tough chick.

All the way for 21 days.

But I was actually kind
of a stupid, tough chick

because I wasn't
thinking about fleas

that actually came up at night.

Ow. [Bleep]Damn it.

Thorns were everywhere.

Oh, [bleep]

Man, another thorn
just went in my foot.

[Bleep]

But the worst part was the
hunger pains, which is constant.

It's just, I'm hungry.

I just really want to leave.

Would you want me to leave here?

I was done, but then I
completely changed my attitude.

It's termites nest.

This is a little nerve-racking.

I mentally made myself
stay in there, stick with it.

I'm becoming a
jungle queen for sure.

And it was probably
one of the best feelings

that I've had in my entire life.

Lick my [bleep] jungle.

This time I'm more
humble about the situation,

and I respect the environment

that I'm going into a lot
more than I did before,

but there is a lot of
water, and it's funny

because I am
terrified of the ocean

because there's
a lot of big things

that could eat me anytime.

Wow.

So I'm just going to have

to keep a positive
attitude about it

and do my best not
to focus on the fear

that I have of
being in the ocean.

their exceptional display

of inner strength under the
most extreme circumstances,

these fiercely independent

and after that we have

The final group to
enter the challenge

is the mixed-gender team
of Angela, Max, and Nicole.

That's one nasty cliff.

Max: Yeah.

Looks like paradise. It's
beautiful but dangerous.

I'm Angela, and recently
I was in South Africa.

South Africa was very intense.

This is fresh and look
straight up right to my shoulder.

And because my partner
didn't have a fire starter,

ultimately it took 7
days to get that fire.

I see an ember!

Big old fire.

Fire!

Also, we were getting
food, but it just was not a lot.

And he threw it in the fire.

Yeah, we butted heads.

You don't throw food out in a
survival situation period ever.

I'm a vegetarian, dude.

I don't give a [bleep]
if you're a vegetarian.

You're not.

Food is food.

I was a military police
officer for 18 years,

and I don't give up.

I always push through.

He went towards my fish trap.

Going to have
a fish fry tonight.

I dealt with everything
that needed to be done.

Almost there.

And I completed the 21-day
challenge there by myself.

I'm not a prideful person,

The Philippines are
very, very different

than South Africa.

Out here one wrong step

can absolutely end your
challenge immediately.

Between the snakes
and the monitor lizards,

there's a lot of
dangerous stuff out there.

We really need to pay
attention all the time

because just like in a combat
situation, complacency kills.

Here it literally
could kill you.

There's nothing that's
taking me out of this challenge

unless I am forced to
be, so no matter what,

I'm going to be
here with you guys.

This is my third
challenge in under a year...

My name is Max.

I started on the 14-day
fan challenge in Panama.

I had practiced like I
was going to the 21-day,

so I was ready to
tackle it head-on.

I wasn't really
expecting my partner

to be so challenging for me.

Sometimes, it just feels
like you came into this with,

like, no skills for this.

I've learned that most
things don't work out

when you try to attack them
in the heat of the moment,

but we came together,
and we made it happen.

My second challenge
was also in Panama.

Initially I started out
with a dude partner.

But then we met up
with two other ladies

halfway through the
challenge and became a tribe.

Things just got so much better.

But the challenge was
hard to say the least.

or one of us is going

By day 13, everyone tapped
out, and I just thought to myself,

It's freaking cold.

And it made it to
where I just believe

I can persevere
through anything.

The idea of doing
a 40-day challenge,

it's hard to even fathom.

Take it 1 day at a time,
that's all we can do.

We're not here
to look at the 40.

We're here to take it 1 day at
a time and then make it to 40.

Not only do I have to deal
with this harsh environment,

I have to deal with
11 other people.

That [bleep] scares
the hell out of me,

but that's also what pushes me,

and that's what gives me
the butterflies in my stomach

and keeps me coming back.

am an ultimate survivor.

My first challenge, it
was drought central there.

It was no picnic.

the heat would just suck up
