I would feel devastated
if I didn't pass the SAS selection.

I'm in this experience

I'm not a sportsperson.

And it is brutal.

I already feel like a different me,
stronger me.

a fortnight of brutal physical

and psychological training,

the worst is yet to come.

Watching nearby,

the DS are about to launch
a simulated attack

using military operatives
known as the hunter force,

to capture and detain the recruits.

Caught off guard, they're bound,
blindfolded, and taken prisoner.

the recruits will undergo

a series of hostile
and confronting ordeals.

a hostage environment,

the hunter force transport

and detain the recruits
in a remote location.

90% of the work we do

is in dangerous situations
behind the enemy lines

where it's possible
that things will go wrong.

and you are on your own.

And you've got to survive

The place is absolutely

Each team must complete a four hour
trek across punishing terrain,

along a river,
to a designated rendezvous point

where they will be extracted
to safety.

Given civilian clothing
and navigation equipment,

the teams are sent on their way.

NARRATOR: Now on their own
inside enemy territory...

by the hunter force who

relentlessly pursue them by land

and by surveillance drones
in the air.

If captured, they'll fail the task
and risk passing selection.

Escape and evasion is one of the
worst things I did on selection

and it's the hardest test.

It's the hardest test.

It simulates being in a war zone.

(MOTOR BIKE ENGINE REVS)

And the total anxiety of pressure,
of the thought of capture,

around every corner
there could be enemy,

is enough to break any person.

(MOTOR BIKE RUMBLES)

(EXHALES)

NARRATOR: Meanwhile,
back at Base Camp...

FOXY: Alright, this is a different
sort of nav for them now.

We've got a strong group here.
They're strong teams.

Chief Instructor Ant and Foxy

use GPS to track the teams
and monitor their progress.

As long as they contour this
and keep this as a reference point.

And also to judging distance
at night is not that easy, is it?

(DRONE BUZZES AND MOTOR BIKE RUMBLES)

NARRATOR: Under heavy pursuit,

Team Alpha have located the river

and will follow its bank
towards the RV point.

But they must continue to evade
the hunter force.

MERRICK: There are dogs all there.

ANT: Team Alpha are tracking well.
I'm really happy with them.

for nav-ing, especially at night.

and getting lost,

has increased their risk
of being captured.

it's a case of trying to think about
what you have to do to survive.

(ENGINE STARTS)

NARRATOR: Interrogation begins.

MAN (YELLS): Who have you been
training with?

This is a mind game
like no other you can ever imagine.

(DRONE BUZZES)

NARRATOR: In the final stages
of selection,

the recruits have been thrown
into a simulated war zone.

Just be careful
'cause I can hear noise.

In a test of survival

they must escape and evade capture

But en route to reach
the RV extraction point...

(BLEEP)

Team Bravo - Sabrina and James,

have been captured and taken
prisoner by the hunter force.

MERRICK: Drone's coming back. Stay.

Meanwhile, Team Alpha - Merrick,
Molly, and Nick,

are stuck, hiding for the past
hour from another hunter force squad.

(WHISPERS) There's one more vehicle
behind you.

NICK: Are they coming this way?
MOLLY: Yes, they are.

NICK: Merrick, behind you.

Up that and pop over

NARRATOR: After nearly 4 hours
on the run...

they think is the rendezvous point.

When you are captured

you can never really replicate
how it's going to be.

It will be a thousand times worse

than you ever experience
on selection.

It's the scariest thing to ever
consider being in, that situation.

And so it's important
to explore it within yourself.

For that reason we try and simulate

as much as we can the experiences
the enemy would put you through.

(CAR DOOR SHUTS)

NARRATOR: Ambushed and captured
by the hunter force,

all five remaining recruits
have failed escape and evasion.

They are now transported
back to Base Camp

where they'll face their next
task, resistance to interrogation.

BILLY: Resistance to interrogation
is a mechanism of staying alive

in probably the worst situation
in your life.

of a bad place.

NARRATOR: Interrogations
will be conducted

by two specialist
Defence Intelligence personnel

with vast experience in war zones,

both led by their superior who can't
be identified for security reasons.

Listen carefully.

I can remember total darkness,

MERRICK: The biggest doubt
I have about myself

is probably the ability to see in
myself what other people see in me.

I've had failures in life.

I couldn't even get through
high school like a regular kid.

to a waiting chopper.

And Phase 3,
a final sprint up the steep incline

to an extraction point
4km up the hillside.

I do find myself getting
increasingly nervous
