The opera 'Aida'
tells of great peoples,

the Egyptians and the Ethiopians,
who waged war for over 100 years.

The opera cannot report
these bloody events directly.

This catastrophe
must first be transformed

into an "almost-could-have-
had-a-happy-ending."

So the war between two nations
is told in terms of a 3-person drama.

Aida, an Ethiopian princess
held in slavery by the Egyptians,

Ioves Radames,
the Egyptian general who,

in turn, is loved by Amneris,
the daughter of the Pharaoh.

However, Aida's father is a prisoner.

Because the opera is
in reality about war,

there can be no happy ending
for the lovers in Act V.

Are you saying you don't love me?

How much should I love you?

Exactly as much as I love you.

Not a little more?

No more and no less.

What if it's less?

Then you have to pay out change.

How do I do that?

By loving me that much more than
the amount you love me less than I do.

Radames, the Egyptian general,

now a traitor against his own will,
is buried alive.

To his surprise, he finds his beloved
Aida already there in the dungeon.

"To the Pharaoh!"

What the opera conceals:

The people, as we know, do not
tolerate lovers being buried alive.

So they free Radames
and Aida just in time.

As soon as the lovers
were freed it became obvious

that they were interested
in nothing but their own love.

People were disappointed.

"Stone them!"

"Stone them!"

So once more, despite
the intervention of the people,

Act Vhas no happy ending.

Operas are so cruel
due to public demand.

they have witnessed 28 wars.

It's incredibly complicated.

We have already
plotted family trees experimentally,

and have thus achieved
a degree of clarity.

That, however,
is not the essential thing.

The essence of this piece,
what it wants to show,

is the reappearance,
the unfulfilled longing

which is always present in humanity.

To go on living...
To go on living at any cost,

not to walk away
and have everything continue as usual.

Here then, this dream
is clothed in a fantastic story...

The dream of eternal life,

at least of limited eternal life,
if there is such an expression.
