the countdown to the end.

we really test them.

If they're not good enough,

Recruits are about to enter

the final 48 hours of selection.

[Rudy] To be
a special forces operator...

You must be able to survive
behind enemy lines.

[Billy] Get the vehicles

[Rudy] This last phase of
selection will push the recruits

beyond anything
they've experienced so far.

We're in the home stretch.

[narrator] It's the penultimate
day of the course,

and the recruits are preparing
for the final push.

And I think it's cool, like,
and pretty badass that,

you know, you and I being
the last two females standing.

I want us to, like,
make it to the end.

[Carli] Yeah.

- How you feel today?
- My right shoulders torched.

Absolutely [bleep] torched,
like will not move up.

I can't even move it
up like this.

- Yeah?
- Oh, [bleep]. It's sore.

- You can tell Danny is not OK.

[Rudy] We started with 16.
Now we've got four.

[narrator] This morning,

the DS have gathered
to assess the recruits.

[Billy] This is the final phase,
of course,

and this is where it counts now.

It's the hardest fight
on the course.

We'll see
if they've been listening

and applying the principles that
we've been trying to teach them.

For me, Number 16
is the clear front-runner.

He's passed all the tasks
for the most part.

I can't even think of a task
that he's failed.

- Yeah, I think you're right.
- Clear front-runner.

Number 8, still the stone wall,
but she's been putting out

and accomplished
some tasks lately.

She's doing better. Let's see if
she has enough left in the tank.

Four looks strong.
She's steady. Great attitude.

But she's about to be
really tested.

13, skin of his teeth.

I mean, he's gotta pull a rabbit
out of the hat for me.

If somebody asked you, "How
was it?", what would you say?

That it was the hardest thing
I ever felt in my life.

[Carli]
Hardest thing I ever endured.

It was almost close to torture.

"Please don't remind me. Let's
talk about something else."

That's what I'd probably
say to 'em.

Sixteen recruits started.
Four of you remain.

You've pushed yourself mentally,
physically, emotionally.

You've learned new skills.

You're gonna face something that
you've never experienced before.

It will be the hardest challenge
that you can imagine.

Before this course is over,
you will be going on the run.

Your mission will be to escape
and evade capture.

What you must do

is take on board the lessons
that you've learned here,

and, remember, bottom line,
never give up.

[narrator] The final stage
of selection is imminent.

[Billy] In the special forces,
we work behind enemy lines.

The recruits will be expected to
go on the run and avoid capture.

Only those
who can survive this phase

will have the chance
to step into our world.

Before their final mission,

the DS want to push
the recruits to their limit

physically and mentally.

[Billy] All the way across.
Let's go!

[narrator]
For the physical test,

the recruits are being taken

to a watering hole
in the Wadi Rum Desert.

This evolution
that you are about to do

is your introduction
into not being able to breathe.

[narrator] Recruits are about
to witness a demonstration

of a US military exercise
called drownproofing.

Your hands will be bound
and tied, and so will your feet.

[narrator] It's a technique
used to teach recruits

how to survive
the threat of drowning.

There you go.

[Remi] As you're sinking,
be blowing out the air.

That's gonna help you descend.

Once your feet
hit the bottom of the pool,

you will push off
to get back to the surface.

Once you reach the surface,
you will take a deep breath

and then go back down.

So you're saying
we have to go to the bottom?

Yes.

[narrator]
Recruits have a split second

to take a breath
and then exhale.

If they mistime,
they'll inhale water

and feel like they're drowning.

[Remi] You will continue doing
that until you see a signal,

myself or Chief Rudy.

- Check?

[Foxy] Drownproofing
is about showing you

that you can compose yourself

in the most uncomfortable
situation... and still live.

If you feel like
you're about to die,

just scream when your head
breaches the surface.

I'm gonna take my inhaler out.

If for some reason I need it,

it's just gonna be

I don't like when I feel like
I can't breathe.

I have asthma,
so it's sometimes harder for me

to take a full breath.

That's when I start panicking,

'cause then I, like,
almost induce an asthma attack.

[narrator] Number 4,
Hannah Brown, is first in.

[narrator] But before
she attempts drownproofing,

she will first swim to the
other side in a weighted vest.

You can swim how you want.

and fatigue your muscles

is already struggling.

is only just beginning.

A lot of people can't handle
having their hands tied on land,

let alone in the water.

We wanna see how the recruits
respond to being in a situation

where they have to stay calm
in order to survive.

has panicked

and broken free of her ties.

- Do you wanna try again?

[Rudy] All right, good,
let's go.

The thing that would upset me
the most about this whole thing

is that if I let
a moment of fear take me out.

[Rudy] You've been pushing.
You've been grinding.

Just exhale. Trust the process.

[Hannah]
I will not let fear win.

I've let fear win before. I'm
not letting fear win in this.

[Billy] Let's go! Come on!

[narrator] Number 4 has only one
more attempt to pass the task.

We're gonna keep them bobbing
until they show us

that they can
push through the panic

and maintain their composure.

of the Special Boat Service,

I have done an immense
amount of work in water,

and it is hard, it's difficult.

I can recall being on a job once
where I was underwater

and I was trying to make my way
to the surface

so I could get
onto a target ship...

when my gear got caught.

And I couldn't go any further.
I was running out of breath.

Big jump.

And I could feel myself
turning into

this violent mess of nerves.

Call it training,
call it experience,

I took stock of the situation,
slowed it down.

[Remi] Exhale!

And I dealt with it in a way
that kept me alive.

[Billy] Absolutely brilliant.
Keep it going.

[Rudy] That's it.

- [Hannah] That was awesome.

- [Danny] She crushed that.

master the technique

with a shoulder injury

Playing through injury
is part of my life.

Compartmentalizing pain
is something

that I've been doing
for a long time.

- Kick like a frog!

[Danny]
Over the course of my career,
I've had countless surgeries.

I broke my leg. I broke my arm.

I've had five concussions.

The life of an NFL "hero"
is an abusive one, for sure.

[Billy] Get into it! Push it!

- [Rudy] Grab the wall.
- [Remi] That's the goal line.

[Rudy] OK, be mindful
of the shoulder.

You did it, right?

All right, do not lift
that shoulder over your head,

your hands over your head, OK?

The mental part of an injury
is far worse

than the physical part,
for sure.

[Rudy] That's it. Exhale.

Goal is in sight.

My shoulder's [bleep] right now.

So we had drownproofing today.
It was a bit of a mare.

[narrator] With the final phase
of selection imminent,

the DS meet
to weigh up which recruits

have the resilience
to last the course.

[Rudy] 16. Hurt shoulder.

[Billy] He struggled, mate,
big time.

[Rudy]
That shoulder's really blown.

He is injured, but I think
he's playing on it a bit.

I think he's looking
for a way out.

- He's an athlete.
- Yeah.

They're just used to,
like, 80 minutes,

90 minutes, with a halftime.

There is a difference between

being an athlete
and being a soldier.

- [Billy] He's a worry.
- [Rudy] Number 8.

Her swimming was excellent.

And then 13, this is what's
so frustrating about him.

Just when you just, you know,
wanna throw him in the garbage,

he shows you something.

- [Billy laughs] Yeah.
- [Remi] Yeah.

Four, she was freakin' flappin'.

She pulled her hands
out of the bonds and said,

"I'm drowning, I'm drowning."

She told Dwight that she thought
she was gonna die.

- [Foxy] No way.
- Yeah.

[Rudy] All right,
so who are we gonna bring in?

[Remi] Well, Number 4,
she was nervous.

We think she already
went into the evolution

psyching herself out.

- [Rudy] Let's bring Four in.
- [Foxy] Yeah.

- [Rudy] Sound good?
- [Billy] Yeah.

All right, you ready?

At this stage,
we will now be analyzing

every step of every recruit
that is left.

Every single person
still has to give 100 percent.

Anyone at any time now
could be gone, just like that.

[narrator] The DS have concerns

that Hannah Brown
is losing her nerve

and are bringing her in
for tactical questioning.

[door slams shut]

Normally I would say,
"Why are you here?"

But what I am gonna say is
"how" are you here?

How the hell are you still here?

I feel like
I've almost surprised myself

with just my ability to...
to keep up

and keep moving forward.

Tell me, what has changed?

What was holding you back?

- What was it? Fear?
- Definitely.

I can tell you what I think
this is bringing out in me.

- OK.
- I can, um...

- Speak. Just get it out.

I've been
thinking about it, um...

maybe, like,
why I'm so, like, ready, um...

I had, like, tragedy happen
really young, and...

My cousins,
my two cousins and my aunt

were brutally murdered
in their home.

And I remember it clearly,

and it, like,
completely wrecked my family.

And it made my dad pretty, um...

just always, like,
he was so scared.

Um, and, um...

I think I've constantly
lived in fear my entire life.

And I feel like this course
has helped me... push through.

And I am proud of myself, 'cause
I was scared it would freeze me,

but I do feel like
I've tried to fight through it.

You know,
you're not the most boisterous,

you're not the most aggressive,
but you are a strong competitor.

There's a lot more to you
than just your trauma.

In some ways, that does shape
you and does make you stronger.

That's your past. It's gone.

You're here
because you should be here.

You're learning
through hardness.

I think you've learned that
you're a lot more than an image

or a book deal, all right?

Guard!

There are moments
of hurt and pain and loss

that have happened in my past.

But I've proven to myself
how strong I really am.

I can move forward
and push through and overcome.

I mean, that is my goal in life.

But it's tough.

How does everything have
no real taste?

[chuckling] I don't know.

[Dwight]
It don't have no seasoning.

If you were blindfolded,
you would not know
what you were eating.

- [Foxy] Over here!
- [Rudy] Fall in, right here!

[narrator] In a few hours,

the recruits will enter
the final stage of selection.

[Rudy] Close your eyes.

[narrator] Going on the run

without any guidance
from the DS.

[Foxy] Follow on.

[narrator] To prepare them,
they will now face

a mental test of initiative.

The ability to take initiative
is something that's integral

to a special forces operator.

This is a thinking man
and woman's game.

[Foxy] Hands by your side.

[narrator]
Recruits have been hooded,

shut into a container,
and tied to a pole.

[Remi] During this task,

we don't give them
any instructions.

They have the ability
to free themselves

and work together
to get everybody out,

but they have to
make the choice to do it.

Do they have the initiative

to get themselves
out of this situation?

Or are they all
gonna just sit there

and wait for someone
to give them an order?

If they slide along the bar,
one of them should be able

to slide almost off the end,
or off the end.

- Yeah.
- I reckon 13'll go for it.

- Yeah, he's a rebel.
- Yeah.

- Shall I start the timer?
- [Billy] Yeah.

[narrator]
Recruits have 20 minutes

to work out that they can
and should free themselves.

[Remi] Once that heat
starts kicking in,

that's when
they're gonna start thinking.

- [Rudy] Mm-hm. Survival.
- [Remi] Tick, tock, tick, tock.

Who's gonna be
the first one to speak?

Yeah.

[Remi] This is a great test
of whether they know

how to tap into
that survival instinct.

All she's gotta do
is slide it along to the end

and it comes off.

[Rudy] No one's said a word yet.

Submissive. Very submissive.

[Billy] 16's... fidgeting.

They gotta start
thinking critically.

Six minutes left.

- Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!

Number 4,
Bachelorette Hannah Brown,

is the first recruit
to free herself.

I got out of my thing.

[Carli] What?
Do we just slip out?

As a young girl,
I wasn't told, like,

It was, "Oh, you're so pretty!"

But I also wanted to be,
like, smart.

Achieving was
really important to me.

I didn't know
we were supposed to get out.

I thought we were just,
like, [bleep].

[Hannah] Yeah, come on.

She's taking good leadership.

Why would they make it
where we could easily get out

if we weren't supposed
to get out?

Good on Number 4 for stepping up

We really underestimated her.

She just continues
to go forward.

- About this experience.

This is the most anxious
I've ever been.

[narrator] In just a few hours,

the final test of selection
will begin.

[Hannah] I'm scared.
How do you feel?

I don't know what the [bleep]
we're getting into.

[narrator] Recruits will be
tasked to evade an enemy force

and will be at risk of capture.

[Foxy] The recruits aren't told
when they're going on the run.

They know it's coming,
and the apprehension

can sometimes be
too much for people.

- Here comes Tom Cruise, y'all.

- Yeah.
- [Rudy] All right, recruits.

Who knows how to read
a map and compass?

- No one?
- Nobody.

[Rudy] OK.

[narrator] Recruits will now
be trained for what lies ahead.

In their final mission,

they will have to navigate
the desert.

Here, I'm gonna make
two mountains, right here.

These are called contour lines.

This means that this is a
raised-up area like a mountain.

[Foxy]
The recruits will be dropped off

in the middle of the desert,
not knowing where they are,

with a sketch map and with
some coordinates to follow.

Beat feet to a place

that you can cover
and conceal yourselves,

and then orient in.

[Dwight] I'm lost. Do we
line this up with this part?

Yeah. See this arrow
right there?

Now we're facing due north.

[Rudy] All right, good to go.
You all do fine.

- Focus and practice, all right?

[Danny] Thank you.

What the hell was that?

Just really gave us

Get everybody to the chow house.

Our line of operations and work

is behind the enemy lines.

We are always
in someone else's backyard.

The possibility
of it going wrong
and being captured is real,

so we have to be
prepared for it.

Relax and listen.
I'm not gonna shout at you.

It's important
what we need to talk about.

One of the biggest
sort of threats to us,

and very realistic threats,

is the possibility
of being captured.

And I do have the authority
to speak about this

'cause I have been captured,
all right?

I was about to just get
my [bleep] head blown off.

So you have to have
a good reason

for you being in that location.

And it's called a cover story.
It's a lie.

[narrator] In advance
of their final mission,

recruits will now
memorize a story

to use in the event of capture.

[Billy] You've got the cover
story in front of you there.

Read it out loud, from the top,
till I tell you to stop.

"You are in Wadi Rum
for a celebrity photo shoot."

The cover story is a reason
to be where you are,

doing what you're doing.

"You will be posing as parties
of anti-poaching wardens

who are trying to prevent
wolf poaching in the region."

It's something that you have
to make sound believable.

"The Arabian wolf is
a subspecies of the gray wolf."

OK, just hold it there.

Key stuff that people
would quiz you on

is what this wolf
really looks like,

so you need to know all that.

And become good actors.

Memorize that story,
take it all in,

and then be able to apply it
when the times comes.

It's for you to build
that scenario in your mind
and believe it,

to make the person
questioning you believe it.

This is gonna be interesting.

How much does
an Arabian wolf weigh?

40 to 45 pounds.

- How many inches is he?
- 26 inches.

This cover story
is really in depth.

It is.

We gotta memorize
as much as possible.

It's a lot to remember.

[Danny] I wanna complete this,
you know.

I wanna be seen as more than
a stereotypical football player

that can't use his brain.

Just think, if we survive this,

no more corned-beef hash,
no more rotten bananas.

No more sand in between
your toes when you go to bed.

[Remi] In this final phase
of selection,

they're gonna be thrown
into the unknown.

is under a simulated attack.

Recruits are being sent
on the run

whilst being pursued
by an enemy force.

The camp has come under attack.
We're gonna have to evacuate.

We're gonna withdraw through
a safe passage, all right?

We've got trusted agents
who will take us out,

drop us off, give us directions
to the next agent,

eventually getting you
across the border to safety.

That's what's gonna happen.

- Do you understand that?
- [recruits] Yes, staff.

[Remi] Work as a team.

Remember, everything
we taught you guys applies.

[Billy] We always expect
to be on the run.

People are coming to kill you.
It's petrifying.

So we have to be prepared
for it.

Your senses are heightened,

everything is now a panic
all around you,

and you've gotta try
and hold it together.

[narrator] The recruits
are split into two teams.

Team Bravo,

Number 16, Super Bowl champion

and Number 4,
Bachelorette Hannah Brown.

- We're headed west right now.

There's a Black Hawk helicopter
right behind us.

[narrator] They are driven
deep into the Wadi Rum Desert

and dropped
at separate locations.

With a basic map and compass,

they must locate
two rendezvous points

along a four-mile valley,

where they will
pick up directions

to reach
the final extraction point.

[Carli]
We should get behind something.

[narrator]
The challenge for both teams

is to move swiftly
and with stealth,

as they're being pursued
by a military hunter force.

[Foxy]
We're looking for the fighters,

the people that are still
willing to think

and not shut down.

Nothing sharpens the mind more
than being hunted by the enemy.

[Dwight] We're trying
to get to here.

- Yeah.
- That's the rendezvous point 1.

- Yeah.
- We have to line it up.

will be assessing
the team's performance.

in that valley.

getting spooked a little bit.

You may think you're
safely hidden in the desert,

but you never know
what your enemy can see.

[helicopter blades whir]

[Hannah] Is that a helicopter?

[narrator] Team Bravo
have correctly navigated

in the right direction.

[Danny] Put your light out.
Put your light out. Careful.

Just come up here for a second.

[Hannah] I think we just need
to get behind this rock.

[Danny] Get down.

The desert is honestly
like my worst nightmare.

And the desert feels like
there's no getting out of it.

Like, how could we escape?

Like, that's what
I always think of,

like, how could we
get out of here?

[Hannah]
We have to work as a team,

and you're going way too far
ahead of me, OK?

[Danny] OK.

Just come up here for a second.

- Don't leave me like that, OK?

The key thing
about working in a team

is knowing everybody's weakness.

What's important, when that
person needs that extra time,

that extra effort, you stick
with 'em, you stand by 'em.

[Hannah] I can't tell
where we are.

Are we on, like, a mountain?

No, we... we definitely don't
do that. Stay off the rocks.

Yeah, come on, this way.

Those helis have had an impact.

They have seriously
