another whole day ice fishing

and another whole day wasted.

We got nothing, nada, zilch.

We're going home
empty beaked again.

See what I mean?

This is serious,

Christmas right around
the corner and no fish.

There's no excuse for us
not to meet our fish quota

and fill our bellies.

Unless there just aren't
as many fish in the ocean

as there used to be.

We're gonna have empty
plates for Christmas dinner.

- Oh Zoey, I just don't
know what's wrong.

The fish are there.

We pick good spots.

We dive at the right time.

We maneuver well under water,

but we still can't
seem to catch anything.

- One thing's for sure,

we've got to find this out
before the hard winter hits

and the fish go even
deeper into the sea.

If everyone's having
the luck we're having,

Penguinland could
starve before spring.

When's the last
time you sat down

to have a really
good fish dinner?

- [Flip] Hm, let me think.

- I have an idea.

- You do?

Tell me.

- I will.

We're going to--

- Oh, let me guess,

instead of us diving
in search of fish,

we lure the fish to us.

- Just how do you
propose we do that?

- Hm, special screenings of
fish tails on the snowy tundra?

Readings of the bravest fish
around the fishing hole?

An open invitation iceberg
slip and slide contest?

- Try and ice vegetable garden.

- I'll tell you what,

let's run my idea by Stella
and see what she says.

If she thinks it's a good idea,

we'll know it's a good idea

and we can get started
planting vegetables

to feed all of Penguinland.

- So, if we plant an
array of vegetables

that can withstand
our winter months,

educate every bird
on their upkeep

and cultivate the
garden properly,

Penguinland stored
food supply can

far exceed the
traditional plan of fish

and belly hunting and gathering

and make us healthier
and happier to boot.

Veggies are a wonderful
source of nutrients

for any animal.

- My, my, you've thought
this through, I see.

- It came to me after we
spent all day on the tundra

searching for fish
that never appeared.

- You mean while I searched
for fish that never appeared?

You got bummed out and
sat down on the ice

while I swam around and around
for what felt like forever!

- Get going kids,
you can still talk to

many animals before nightfall

and get a clear picture
of where Penguinland

stands on the idea.

- So, let me get this straight,

when we get hungry, we'll
pick the most of our food

from this vegetable
garden of yours.

- Exciting, eh?

You can still hunt fish
if you want to, Bondo,

you just won't go hungry if
you don't catch anything.

There will always be a
rich and plentiful garden

of ice vegetables
to choose from.

- I see.

Will this garden have krill?

- Well, no.

Krill don't grow in gardens.

They live in the ocean.

- Will there be squid?

- Mm, squid, yummy.

- No, same thing, Bondo.

Squid swim in the sea.

They don't grow in gardens.

- Well, what about fish?

Any Alaskan Salmon?

(grumbling)

- Oh, my tummy's growling
like a Polar Bear.

- Whoa, whoa, whoa, we don't
say that around here, Flip.

- Say what?

- Look at this castle,
Mold Spot, it's a disgrace,

crumbling around us,
sinking into the ground.

Oh how I long for those
glory days of Arctic power

and iron fisted rule.

I am the most powerful creature

in the North Pole, after all.

I need to adhere to
certain standards.

- Sounds great, Hunch, what
a role it must have been.

- You have no idea, Mold Spot.

You weren't even a fungal spot

at the base of a mighty tree
when I dominated this land

and all the creatures in it.

Now half of them don't
even know who I am.

Alas, we all grow
older, slower, weaker,

until we're enveloped into
complete obsolescence.

I hate it.

- That sounds terrible, Hunch.

What a miserable existence.

What a waking nightmare.

What a swirling vortex of
existential nothingness.

- I'd prefer it if you
kept quiet on such matters,

Mold Spot, you tend to
make it all so much worse.

- Sorry Hunch, I was only
trying to see it your way.

- Well don't do that, please.

I feel infinitely worse after
hearing your descriptions.

- Yes, Hunch,

I'll keep my observations
to myself from now on.

- Excellent.

- But if I may, Hunch,
one final observation?

- Very well, out with it.

What's so important you
can't keep it to yourself

and allow me to just a
moment's peace of mind.

- At last count, the
castle's food supply

was perilously low, Hunch.

If common mathematic
calculations hold true,

we will be completely out of
rations within a fortnight.

- A fortnight?

That means we'll already
be on our way to starving

by the time the winter
season's in full swing.

- Yes, Hunch,
that's right, Hunch.

- This situation is untenable.

These castle's stones will
soon be buried in snowfall

higher than our tallest spires.

We'll surely perish
inside this dungeon

of our own making.

- Um yes, it's merely
an observation, Hunch,

but your pessimistic
outlook is most certainly

far grimmer than mine.

- Is that a polite
way of suggesting

that I shut up, Mold Spot?

- Well, your words,
Hunch, not mine.

- A pessimist, I am not,
you blathering fungi.

Rather, I am a realist
and reality dictates that

we procure adequate
food for ourselves

before this coming
winter or else.

- Oh great, Hunch, or if I may--

- My native land is not

There my mushroom village
has expert horticulturists

who might be able to help us.

- Horti what?

What is that word, Mold Spot?

I don't know its meaning.

- Horticulture, Hunch.

It's the art or practice

of garden cultivation
and management.

- So it's a fancy
term for gardening?

- Basically.

- So what?

You're proposing that we
plant some piddling garden

and nibble on fig leaves
for the entire winter?

- Well no, not a
piddling garden,

rather a grand sweeping garden,

a garden befitting a leader of
your historic stature, Hunch.

- Ah, I see.

And will there be mushrooms
in this garden, Mold Spot?

- Mushrooms?

Uh, no.

No mushrooms, Hunch.

- Hm, a pity.

I do so enjoy a succulent
healthy mushroom.

- Oh, uh, I never knew
this about you, Hunch.

- Mmhmm, the way a
ripe mushroom's plump
dome just (pops)

pops in my mouth.

Mm, simply delicious.

- Oh, I see.

Then I suggest you
devise a method

of insuring we
don't starve up here

when the heavy snow hits.

Journey to your
homeland if you must,

but be warned, mushroom
sauce tastes great

on just about anything.

(gulps)

- Well Zoey, it's one

someone out here somewhere

who'd just love to chomp
on a snowy head of cabbage.

I don't know who they are,
but I'm sure they're out here.

- Hey guys, how's it going?

- Fancy meeting you
penguins in the Ice Woods.

What brings you all
the way out here?

Are you lost?

- Lost?

Something like that.

We're trying to pitch a new
diet to the Arctic animals,

but it's not going too well.

- Oh no, what's the diet?

Maybe you just need
to spice it up.

- Yeah, with oysters.

- We had a hard time
catching fish today, Larry

and I got the idea to plant
a community ice garden

that will feed any animal
who's hungry and likes veggies.

- Oh, I like veggies.

- [Zoey] You do?

- Yes, ma'am.

I'm a reindeer in
case you didn't know.

- [Flip] We noticed.

- I like to munch on lots of
different veggies and greens,

things like moss,
herbs, ferns, grass

and the shoots and leaves
of shrubs and trees,

especially Willow and Birch.

In the dead of winter, I make
due with Lichen and fungi

and I scrape the snow away
with my hooves to get it.

- Oh, you're the perfect
candidate to hear

all about my great
garden idea, Larry.

- Tell me more, Zoey.

I'm all ears and
antlers, of course.

- [Flip] Yep, noticed that too.

- What would you say
to a big old garden

full of cold weather
vegetables like broccoli,

collard greens, kohlrabi,
chards, Brussels sprouts,

lettuce, cabbage,
carrots, beets, fava beans

and on and on that you
can both contribute to

and pick from
anytime you wanted?

- Wow, I'd say
where do I find it?

I'm all about a
community garden.

- (sighs) Great.

- You are?

Oh Larry, I knew
you'd understand

and as soon as we explain
it to other animals,

more of them will
understand it too.

- Why are you asking
around about it, Zoey?

How come you don't just
get it started yourself?

Remember, if you plant
it, they will come.

- Stella told us
she's all for it

as long as Penguinland is too.

So we're out to get
the consensus from
every animal we meet.

- Yeah, that's a wing up
or wing down kind of thing.

- I see.

Well I can give it a hoof up.

- [Zoey] Yay!

(cheerful orchestral music)

- I don't know about
this, you guys.

The beak service sounds good,

but there are so many
varied animal species

here in the Arctic.

How can you expect
all of them to take

to a sudden vegan diet?

- Exactly.

- Let me talk, Flip.

It isn't a vegan diet, Barry,

you'd still be able to hunt
or fish if you wanted to,

but the difference
would be that you

were no longer depending on
hunting or fishing to survive.

- Ho, ho, ho.

- Oh I can't wait.

- [Flip] Good to know. (laughs)

- I do hope my little
friend, Mold Spot,

fairs well in his return home.

He's been a valuable
companion up here

in this big lonely castle

and his chess game
is formidable,

but should he try
to double cross me,

I will not hesitate
to toss him into a pan

and spritz him with olive oil.

Then heat on high for 15
minutes until golden brown.

(owl mumbling)
Yum.

- Hey Hunch, how are things?

- Horribly, Mumble,
just horribly.

- Oh, what's that you say?

Is it the bats?

I hate the bats.

There droppings hit
my nest every night.

I return home at dawn for a
good day's sleep and boom,

clean up on isle number two.

- No, it isn't the bats,
Mumble, it's the food.

- We eat the bats?

Bad idea, compadre,
rabies, scabies,

not to mention, boney
little critters.

- No, no, listen to me, Mumble.

The castles running out of food.

If I don't do something fast,
we'll starve before spring.

- Oh, hm, sucks to be you.

- Yes, it does.

I blame that pesky
penguin population

for gobbling up all the
fresh fish from the ocean,

fish that would normally be
served on my banquet table

as part of a glorious
castle feast.

From feast to famine
in one fell swoop.

Those birds are going to pay.

- And pay they shall.

Heck, I've lost countless
tundra mice and rats

to those waddling
tuxedo monsters.

If they have their way,
we'll all be out of business

or hitching a ride
on a crab boat

to go work a fish market cash
register on some smelly pier.

- Well not me.

These runts may be too young
to remember, but I'm Hunch.

- Hm, and I have a hunch you're
going to expound further.

- You bet I am, Mumble.

As I speak, my trusty
sidekick, Mold Spot,

is on his way to
his mushroom village

for an antidote to our dilemma.

- Antidote?

If he tries crossing the
boarder with anything liquid,

he'll be arrested on sight.

And forget eyedroppers,

that's a one way
ticket to the pokey.

- The pokey?

- The slammer.

- The slammer?

- Prison, man, prison.

They'll lock that fungi
up and throw away the key.

- Well, that would be preferable

to him returning without
a cure for our problem.

If he dares to do that,
his mushroom village

will feed me through the winter

and come spring, there
will be no mushrooms left.

- [Mumble] Savage, you.

- That's only the tip
of the iceberg, Mumble.

I have tasty mushroom
recipes to last for weeks,

prepared any number of ways,

stuffed, diced, sauced,
sautéed, pan seared,

baked, boiled, steamed,
fried, you name it,

I can prepare it.

- I prefer to eat
my mushrooms raw.

- Raw?

You freak.

The fact remains,
if little Mold Spot

dares to return to this
castle empty handed,

I'll harvest his village
until there's nothing left

but the dirt those silly
mushrooms sprouted from.

- So we can plant more
and harvest those too.

- Exactly.

I knew I should have chosen you

as my right hand owl, Mumble.

If only I could understand
you more than 1/2 the time.

- Eh, talking's overrated.

- Yes, well good
conversation makes

the time pass quicker up here

and though I enjoy
hearing myself talk,

I also enjoy a good
verbal tit-a-tate.

- I'm more of a
non-communicator myself.

- That is quite a cocked
brow you have there.

they're usually just looking
to rob our land of oil

or other resources, but this,
this is big love, you two.

- Well, I mean, since
you put it like that,

I have an idea.

- I thought I smelled
something burning.

and I don't build
nests in their way.

- Hm, maybe I should ditch
my nest and move in here.

How's your ceiling clearance?

I'll grab my stuff
provided those bats don't

soil everything while I'm gone.

you think he'll cave in

and rejoin his mushroom family?

The bonds of fungi
run deep, you know.

- Nonsense, Mold Spot will
be back as he promised.

If not, I'll do as I
promised and invade

that little village
with blinding vengeance

and savage rage and I'll harvest
every last mushroom I find

and I'll make the world's
biggest bubbling cauldron

of cream of mushroom
soup and drink

every last drop of it by
myself. (laughing evilly)

- Wow, sinister.

- [Mumble] Maybe I'll
just hang in my nest

for the time begin, then.

- [Hunch] Good idea.

(suspenseful orchestral music)

- Firstly, I'd like to
commend you mushrooms

on being so community
minded and giving back.

Your shared garden
idea is one of the most

heart warming things
an old snail like me

has heard in quite some time.

If only it had happened
when I was a young slug.

I surely could have been
more actively involved.

for thousands of
years in the wild.

Why, that's a wonderful idea.

You penguins can
count on my support.

Anything I can do to help
this idea succeed, I'll do,

even if I have to distribute
fresh Arctic vegetables

all over the world by way
of Santa's Christmas sleigh.

- [Together] (gasps) Whoa!

- Really, Tinker?

That's a huge favor!

No way would we expect you to--

- Hush, I wouldn't offer
if I didn't mean it.

- Shucks, well if I
had known this trip

was gonna get all mushy,
I'd have brought my boots.

- If it isn't mushy, Flip,

it's just the kindness and
generosity that, sadly,

we see less and
less of these days.

Thankfully there are still
penguins like you and Zoey left

who bring cheer just
because they care.

just because we care.

- Yeah.

about delivering vegetables

this holiday season?

- I sure am, along with
all the fun toys of course.

What better way to get
children everywhere

to eat their veggies?

And besides,

a lump of cauliflower in
those fireplace stockings

a lump of coal.

- [Zoey] (laughing)
No one can argue that.

- Hey you know what else
would go well in stockings?

- Yeah, think about it,
it'd fit like a glove.

- Yuck and stink
up the whole house?

- Not if it's properly steamed.

It's light and fluffy
with a delicate flavor.

birds are real, Hunch.

but they're real.

Probably blows the smell

momentous occasion.

No penguin has ever
visited us before.

- It was quite a hike
too, let me tell ya.

are you here to surrender
your territory to the castle?

- We're here to offer a deal
you might be interested in.

- Wait, what?

Shouldn't we at
least hear them out?

deal you speak of,

beaked bartenders?

- We'd like to plant
a community garden

big enough to feed
all of the animals

here in the Arctic
anytime they're hungry.

- [Bondo] Only we don't have
enough seeds to get started.

- We don't have
any seeds actually.

- We're seedless.

- So we can't do
it without help.

- [Bondo] And that's
where you come in.

- If you want.

- We know you do hocus pocus.

- And you could probably conjure

the seeds we need
if you wanted to.

If I could conjure
any seed I wanted,

don't you think I'd
have planted a garden

for myself by now or
at the very least,

tangly trees to keep
out stray penguins.

- Oh.

animals are aligning against me

in an effort to
destroy my castle

garden in its place.

- Is that why you never
planted a garden like you said?

- Yes, well that and the
fact that I hate vegetables.

- I mean, I'll eat
them if I must,

an occasional carrot
here, an odd potato there,

but I'm a meat man, Mumble.

- I heard that.

Nothing like a panicked
mouse or a frightened rabbit.

until I find out who all is
in on this insidious plot

filet the penguins and
cream the mushrooms.

- Yes, I said nothing about
taking off their heads.

My heavens, that's barbaric.

the process, Hunch.

We'll cross that bridge
when we come to it.

For now, let's take those
penguins to the Lake of Woe.

- The Lake of Woe?

Sounds ominous.

Where is it?

- [Hunch] In the basement.

I built this castle right on top

of a fresh spring centuries ago.

- Wait, you're telling me you
have your own indoor lake?

- Yes, why?

- That's so gangster.

- That's not all.

What sets the Lake of Woe apart

is the fact that once you
jump in, you don't get out.

- Genius. (laughing)

- [Hunch] I know,
