it's all about family.

I'm no longer Aunt Jenni.

My nephew and his wife asked
me to design the living room

that they've always wanted.

I love to have little moments
of black throughout a room.

That is so cool. [laughs]

I'm balancing a lot
on this makeover.

-[exclaims]
-Jenni.

[Jenni] But when
it comes together,

I think my nephew and his wife
will be super impressed.

I'm so excited
to give them this gift.

This is incredible.

Wow.

[Jenni] I think
creativity breeds confidence.

I mean, look at this.

This is good, right?

I'm Jenni Yolo.

I've always had
a passion for creating.

And I turned that love
into a career

as a DIY home vlogger.

I totally planned that.

[snaps fingers] Boom.

I've learned you don't have
to have a huge budget

or a ton of time to really
bring a space to life.

-[all laughing]
-It's perfect.

[Jenni] So now I get to give
my clients a room they love

in just a three-day weekend,

sharing all my DIY tips
along the way.

This week, I'm headed
to my client's house,

who just happens
to be my family.

-[Alyssa] Hey, Jenni.
-Oh, hey!

[Kyle] Hello.

How are you?

-Good. How are you?
-Nice to see you.

-Hey, Alyssa.
-Hi!

Good to see you.

I know Kyle and Alyssa
because Kyle is my nephew.

I've known Kyle
since the day he was born.

He's kind of more like
a little brother to me.

Kyle's married to Alyssa,

and they have the sweetest
little daughter, Saylor.

[Saylor exclaims]

The room that we're
going to be working on

is the living room.
It's the hangout room.

It's the entry.
It's the stairway.

A lot of things
are in this one room.

And there's not really
a difference between anything.

It's all just one big space.

Let's talk living room.

-All right. Come on in.
-Let's check it out.

-Okay.
-There it is.

[Jenni] All right.

I've seen it before,
but I'm no longer Aunt Jenni.

-[Kyle] Okay.
-I'm designer Jenni.

[Kyle] I like it.

When you walk into
the front door of their house,

you're immediately
in the room.

It's a living room.
It's an entryway.

It's a storage.
The stair's there.

And there's just, like,
really no focal point.

Nothing to look at.

I need to know
what's working for you,

what's not working for you.

Well, I think first off,
I fall into trends.

-[Jenni] Trends, yeah.
-Very big.

No, I think I've done boho,
farmhouse.

-I see a farmhouse
piece right here.
-[Kyle] Yep, yep.

-Nothing that's timeless
and holds character.
-[Jenni] Yeah.

-[Alyssa] And for a room that
we spend the most time in,
-[Jenni] Yeah.

I don't want
to get sick of it.

Yeah. Yeah, that's fair.

I think when you first start
decorating your house,

it's easy to fall
into the trends.

I kind of want
to cut through that

and find a really
classic style

that they'll love
for a long time.

You got a big blank wall,
you got a big TV on it.

What would be a dream
that would go on this wall?

I just feel like it needs
a bold, like, statement piece.

Yeah, and something that
kind of creates a focal point.

-[Alyssa] Yeah.
-[Kyle] Yes.

-To look at that's
something besides the TV.
-[Alyssa] Mmm-hmm.

The other thing that I want
to address in this space

-is the stairs.
-[Alyssa] Mmm-hmm.

[Jenni]
I mean, maybe not technically
part of the living room,

but it's in my eyesight.

-So I got to do
something with it.
-[Alyssa] Yeah.

-[Alyssa] Doesn't look
great right now.
-[all laugh]

[Jenni] What are we feeling
about this carpet?

-[Alyssa] Needs to go.
-It needs to go.

-[Jenni] Needs to go. Okay.
-[laughing]

-The carpet needs to go...
-Yes. Yes.

...and the wood kind of
has that orangey...

-Orangey wood.
What do you feel about that?
-[Alyssa] Mmm-hmm.

That also needs to go.

[Jenni] It needs to go. Okay.

I do like the hardwood floors,

-so maybe it's keeping
-[Kyle and Alyssa] Yeah.

the wood there,
but kind of getting rid of

-some of the
orangey wood trim.
-[Kyle] Yeah.

Okay. And your record player.

[Alyssa] Yes.

[Kyle] It's where we have
our dance parties.

-[Jenni] This is a little
dance party zone.
-[Alyssa] Yep.

[Jenni] Okay, I love that.

But maybe we could jazz up
this area a little bit.

And then this built-in kind of
strange closet situation.

-What are you guys
thinking about that?
-[Kyle] Yeah.

-We got the built-in here,
-[Jenni] Mmm-hmm.

but there's also, kind of,
this halfway closet

-where you, you know,
put coats and stuff.
-[Jenni] Okay.

And then there's this,
uh, shoe storage...

-...stash area.
-Shoe storage? Okay.

This little corner's
doing a lot,

-but none of it seems
to really be functioning
-[Kyle] Yeah, yeah.

all that well.

-[all laugh]
-Yeah.

So in an ideal world,

your closet would go down
to the ground, right?

-Yes.
-Yeah.

But do you like the built-in?

Do you think that's
something you'd want to keep?

-Yes, I do love the built-in.
-Absolutely.

-We just...
-We do like it.

-It has potential. We just--
-Yeah. Yeah.

[Jenni] I see that
there is some potential.

[both] Yeah.

-[Kyle] You know, it's--
-[Jenni] Need to know
how to style it.

[Alyssa] Okay.

[Jenni] That's kind of
one of my specialties.

My ideas are churning.

I got a few things that

I think I can do
in this space.

The great thing is

that we're going to be able
to come in here

and get this all done
in a weekend.

-Awesome. Can't wait.
-All right.

-[Jenni] Okay?
-Yeah, I'm excited.

There's always a little bit
of added pressure

with doing this
for a family member,

but honestly, I don't think
they would ever really

get to doing a lot of stuff
in this space.

So I'm really happy
to do it for them.

So my plan is to paint
the whole space white.

We're going to do crown
on the top.

I'm going to create
a chair rail that goes
all the way around the room

and paint the chair rail
and below that blue.

I want to create
a faux plaster fireplace.

And then I want to get rid
of the orangey wood

by painting the stairs black
and do a stair runner down it.

For the area
with the record player,

I want to add wallpaper,
a beautiful vintage piece,

and an antique rug.

And then we're
going to take the closet

and bring it all the way
down to the floor

and put a new door on it.

And then build out that shelf

so we can style it and
make it look really beautiful.

Really make this room feel
like it was thought through.

If we're going to get this
makeover done in three days,

we got to get moving.

But first,
I got to clean out the room

and talk game plan with David.

Hello.

-[David] Hello.
-I'm here to talk game plan.

Oh, you got tape measure.

That means you're serious.

Yeah.

I want to figure out
this situation,

the big moment,

the focal point in this room.

Faux fireplace right here.

The wall's about 10 feet wide.

And I'm thinking
that right in the center,

I want to put in
a faux fireplace.

The question is,
do we have time to

frame it out, dry wall it?

And then I would love
to do that plaster treatment.

-Okay.
-Three days.

Do we have
enough time for that?

Frame, drywall,
tape and mud, one day.

-And then your faux
plaster the next day.
-Plaster.

You can even let it dry
overnight before you style it.

Obviously, we're not
going to put a chimney in.

So it's a cool way
to get the look

without having a real chimney.

But our hope is that
you won't really be able
to tell the difference.

Do you think
we should tape this out

-just so to truly visualize it
to make sure it looks good?
-Sure.

So I'm going to do
this plaster treatment on it.

And that will give it
a little bit of texture

and make it look like
it's always been there.

[David] Do you want this...

[Jenni]
It's feeling pretty good.

That's a foot in.

Yeah, this feels good.

This feels like
the right size.

I picture stockings
hanging here.

TV, yeah,
it all feels like it works.

-Okay.
-Game plan.

Thank you for taping it out.

I'm a visual person.

Michael's working on
framing up the fireplace.

They're getting all the paint
up on the walls.

I'm going to head out
and go to the workshop

and work on a DIY project.

[birds chirping]

I really want a
marble coffee table
for this living room.

But if you don't
quite have the budget

or you have small kids,

it might not be
the most practical.

So we are going to do
a DIY version today.

I found this coffee table.

And I loved the scale,
the shape, how it was oval.

But it doesn't quite work
in the room.

So I am going to take
this coffee table

and I'm going to prep it by

sanding it and deglossing it,
paint it black,

and then we're
going to do this cool
marbling technique on top

and create a faux
marble coffee table.

There's a little bit
of a sheen on here,

so we want to get that off.

So I'm going to use my sander,
and then I'm going to sand it.

After I sand it, I'm going
to take this deglosser.

And that's going to clean it
and also just

take any of that
shiny surface.

And that just
takes away any sheen

so the paint can adhere to it.

And then we'll get it ready
for paint.

All right.

I have everything prepped,

and now I'm going to start
painting it all black.

I'm using black paint to
create a really stark contrast

with the white marbling spray
that I'm going to add.

All right.

I have three coats
of black paint on this.

And now to the fun part,
we are going to marble it

using marbling spray paint.

And it goes on
almost like silly string.

You spray it on the surface,

and you just keep going
and playing around with it

until you have the
marble table of your dreams.

That is so cool. [laughs]

That's so cool.

Mmm!

That's pretty cool, huh?

We have marble!

And the last step
that we have to do

is to do a couple coats
of top coat.

And that kind of adds
to the whole marble effect.

When it's dry, it'll have
that little glossy finish.

You'll apply the top coat
and even strokes going across.

It's going to look
a little cloudy at first.

But don't worry, it's going
to dry clear and glossy.

Okay. I have the second coat

all done.

I'm going to attach it
to the top,

and then we're going
to bring it over
to Kyle and Alyssa's house.

I have a marble coffee table
for under 50 bucks.

[Jenni]
It's day two, and we've made
a ton of progress so far.

The team has
finished dry walling
the faux fireplace,

the wallpaper
is being installed,

and the trim and paint are up.

Whoa.

David cruised on the trim.

I love the chair rail and the
fact that the room is blue.

I think that looks so pretty.

And it's my turn to step in
and plaster this fireplace.

I'm so happy
with how it turned out.

Michael did a beautiful job.

We're doing a faux plaster

just using joint compound
and paint.

To start, what I'm going to do
is grab some joint compound,

put it in my bucket.

And the idea for this

is that it's actually going
to look like it's plastered,

like it's been there forever.

And then I want this
to, kind of, have
a beige finish on it.

So, I'm going to pour some
beige paint right in there.

And that will also help
thin it out a little bit

so it's a lot easier
to work with.

And then we're going to mix.

Okay.

And then, this is key
to kind of get that
marbling effect.

You mix your
first round up thoroughly

so you have your base color.

And then you go back in

and you put
a little bit more paint.

And then we're just going to
do a really light mix on this.

I'm going to scoop
some of this out.

Then I'm going to start
applying it to the fireplace

in a crisscross pattern.

I just want to see
a lot of movement.

Kind of think of, like,
an old plaster wall.

It doesn't need to be perfect.

The imperfections, kind of,
add to the character.

And you can see this beautiful
creamy color that's on there.

I love this DIY project
'cause it's super affordable.

All it really costs
is the price

of a bucket of joint compound.

I'm sure you have
some leftover, and some paint.

Okay.

We renovate
a lot of old houses.

And if we can't
restore the stairs,

I often paint them.

I picked black because

I love to have little moments
of black throughout a room.

I feel like it keeps
your eye moving

and it also grounds a space.

We patched up
a lot of the screw holes

and then
created a flat surface
to put the paint on.

All right.

Let's get painting.

This is looking really good.

I'm going to let it dry.

And then I'm going to do
two coats of top coat.

[Jenni] We're headed to
The Little Village Play Cafe

down the street
from Kyle and Alyssa's house.

I thought it'd be so fun
for my daughter

and Alyssa's daughter

to create some DIY art.

I think it'd be really fun
just to add a personal touch

to the gallery wall
I'm working on.

[Jenni] Alyssa told me
about this place.

And I checked it out
a few weeks ago.

It is so cute in here.

I was admiring all the design.

And it's also a great place
for my kid to play.

Do you guys want to make
some art today?

[gasps] Ooh...

Saylor, you want to make
some art today?

-Yeah.
-Yeah?

My daughter and Saylor,
they love making stuff.

So I thought it'd be fun to do
an art piece with them

using the colors in the room
to add to the gallery wall.

[Jenni] Why don't you pick
which color you want?

What color do you want to use?

[Jenni gasps] Blue?

Okay.

We're attempting to do a
no-mess paint project today.

-[Jenni gasps]
-Okay.

Oh!

Can I have that, please?

So I got squirt bottles
with a bunch of colors in

from the room.

We're going to squirt them
ion a canvas

and then put it in a bag
so they can move it around

and create their art piece.

So I'm going to put this
inside here.

Hopefully no...
no paint will get on anything.

Okay, Saylor.

Go like this. Hit it. Hit it.

[Alyssa] You can use
your whole hand.

Use your whole hand.

Yep.

All right. What colors
do you want to use?

There's another blue.

-It's both paints.
-Yeah.

-Yes.
-That's a little sticky.

A little sticky?

Mmm.

-Yeah!

-[Alyssa] Yep.
-[Jenni] Okay.

There you go.

-[Saylor grunts]
-[Jenni laughs]

[Jenni] That looks good!

You're doing a good job, bud.

-[chuckles]
-[Alyssa] Yeah,
you're doing it.

[laughs]

My daughter is definitely
a mini-me.

She said when she grows up,

she wants to create art
like mommy,

which... my heart swelled.

Do we have a future artist?

Okay!

-I feel like this is a very
interesting abstract piece.
-[Alyssa] Yeah.

[Jenni] Hey,
that's not too bad.

I'm going to let these dry.

Let's, uh, go play with
the girls for a little bit
before I have to get back.

-Yeah, let's do that.
-Okay.

[Jenni] It's the last day
on the project.

We didn't get them
a brand new front door,

but we're going to give
their existing front door

a little bit of a new life
by painting it black.

There's a lot going on inside.

Michael's doing
final paint touch-ups,

and David's installing
that brick veneer

in the faux fireplace.

It's looking beautiful,
but there's still a lot to do.

One shelf here.

Okay.

Actually, can you hold two up?

One of my goals in the room
was, kind of, to create

different moments throughout.

I just got to visualize it.

The team is balancing
a lot in this renovation.

So, you know,
I'm going to have Alan

actually balance something
so I can see it.

[Jenni] It's fun working
with our friends.

When things are feeling
a little stressful,

I feel like I just go and
have a conversation with Alan.

Immediately, I feel lighter.

All right, well,
I'll get going.

I'm going to get my tchotchkes
and decorate this bad boy.

You gotta have a spot
to put your tchotchkes.

Now that the stairs
are painted,

I am installing the runner.

And this is such a
good DIY project

that you can do to totally
transform your stairs.

I've gotten
this far down already,

but let me show you
the step-by-step.

First off, I cut two pieces
of wood as guides.

And that way, this will stay
centered the whole way down.

We're going to use our
bolster tool just to get this

really taut in this corner.

And then I'm going to add
a staple every three inches.

Just want to make sure
that that's really taut.

I just love that
there's so many

really transformational
DIY projects that can
be done in a weekend,

like painting the stairs,
installing the stair runner.

It's just a lot of fun DIYs.

All right,
I'm going to keep going.

Finish this up.

Is this the right height?

I would say six inches
below the crown.

I'm a big fan
of the gallery wall,

but I don't want to do just
any gallery wall this time.

We're actually
going to hang a brass rail

with chains on it.

You ready?

Yeah, let me see.

Oh, okay, so you clip
things on to here.

[Jenni] Yep.

And that way,
you can change out the art.

You can put
different things on it.

And our
daughter's masterpieces

will hang on there.

My favorite part
is you don't really
have to measure.

This space really
turned out so sweet.

I love how all the elements
are working together.

I set out to create a
cohesive design in this space

that didn't feel too trendy,
something that felt classic.

And I really think
we achieved that.

It's comfortable.
It's creative.

It's not a space
they're going to get sick of.

And I'm just so excited
to show it to them.

They're on their way.

that technique done

-with pictures, like,
hanging like that.

That is so unique.

And then,
the built-in's still here.

[Kyle] Ah, the built-in.

-[Kyle] I love it.
-[Jenni] Yeah, right?

[Alyssa] Uh, yeah.

-Looks really, really good.
-The Jenni touch.

Like, it would've been sad
to lose the built-in.

-I feel like the built-in
brings a good separation
-[both] Yeah!

-from room to room.
-[Kyle] Sure, sure.

Where'd you get
this color blue?

I knew you grew up
on the lake.

-So I feel like the blue
would call to you.

[Alyssa chuckles]

[Kyle] And then
the white, it just...

it all comes together so well.

I love the wallpaper, too.

-[Jenni] You do?

[Jenni] It's a little bold,
but I really wanted

to, kind of, bring
some black accents

from the staircase
and, kind of,

-carry that through
to connect this whole area.
-[Kyle] Sure.

And I don't know
if you noticed,

but there's a lot
of vintage pieces,

which is, kind of,
you know, what I do.

[Kyle] I know.
I love the pieces.

-And the best part
is no more of that older,
-It's beautiful.

you know, questionable carpet.

-It's nice.
-[Alyssa laughs]

[Kyle] You know, we got
the nice runner here.

We did a nice soft carpet
for your Saylor to go up.

[Kyle] It looks way better
with the black like this.

And this was a fun DIY.

This was actually
an antique coffee table,

and it was the perfect size.

But this is spray paint.

The marbling is spray paint.

-Oh, wow.
-Really?

-[Jenni] Yeah.
-[Alyssa laughs]

-So it looks kind of...
it looks like real marble.
-It looks legit!

[all laughing]

I feel like
we're somewhere else.

-Like, this is our
living room though.
-Yeah, I know, right?

This is your living room.

It's funny, the things
that I kind of took a
chance on in the space,

like the wallpaper
and the blue color,

were the things that they
picked out and they loved.

I mean, I can't believe
you did this in like...

-Yeah, you did it
in three days?
-Two, three days?

-Three days.
-Weekend.

Three days.
We did it in a weekend.

It was really cool just to
hear them be so wowed

that that was their space.
