In ancient Hindu mythology

the story goes that when the great
warrior Parashurama threw his axe
into the Arabian Sea,

the water retreated, giving rise
to the Indian state of Kerala.

The path cut by his axe
crisscrosses this land

in its meandering rivers,
tranquil lagoons and its backwaters

with hundreds of canals,

which locals share with houseboats
full of holiday-makers.

And it's along these waterways
that the teams will be racing

for this, the third leg
of the Amazing Race Australia.

I went on a houseboat New Year's Eve
once in Tweed Heads.

It was one of the best days
of my life. New Year's Day.

where artists paint their bodies
like tigers

and dance to honour
a goddess called Durga.

If teams choose Stripe It, they must
paint the belly of a kali dancer

perfectly replicating the intricate
details on the lead dancer's belly.

Once they've successfully
completed the artwork,

they'll receive their next clue.

It helps if you're,
like, 40 kilos heavier.

If teams choose Strike It,

they'll be playing
the ancient Indian game, gilli danda,

from which modern-day cricket
is derived.
