a national panic.

- These deaths have
been associated with

the presence of cyanide
in two containers

of extra-strength Tylenol.

- Do not take Tylenol

- Cyanide is so deadly
an amount the size of a pea

can kill you.

- This was a
stone-cold mystery.

People died, and many of
them were in the same family.

- I just knew
something was wrong.

- Paula was murdered.

She was just murdered.

- We know that there's
somebody out there

trying to poison people.

- How could he pull off the
crime of the century perfectly

and not get caught?

- We're actively pursuing
this investigation.

This is not collecting
dust on a shelf.

- This could be our guy.

you know who did it?

- My name
is Isabel Antoinette,

and I am 12 years old.

♪ ♪

Tylenol's a thing
that everyone uses.

It's like, "Hey, I'm sick.

"I'm going to take Tylenol.

Maybe I'll feel
a little bit better."

Our family took it.

Adam took it.

He died first,
and then Stanley and Theresa

took it,
because they had a headache.

Later on, passed.

If not in my mother's time,
I will continue

to try and help
my family find answers

to this horrible tragedy.

Maybe I might even
solve it one day.

My grandpa deserves to know.

- We had the small farm with
two cows, a couple of pigs,

chickens in Poland--

very small city.

My father was here
already, because he came

early, about six months early.

Then, he brought us,
you know, after that.

Because first, he want
to see how is Chicago,

how is the United States.

When we came to United States,
I went to Wallace High School.

My brothers and sisters
went to a Catholic school.

Even one of the priests
paid for the Catholic school

for my brother.

Paid, because my parents
were kind of poor, so...

- Well, these are
some really old photos.

There's a lot of
photos missing here.

This is when they
came to America.

My father, Joe, Adam,
my grandpa, my grandma,

Stanley, and my Aunt Sophie.

Adam-- he had
a very soft heart.

He was very kind, caring.

I remember when I had
my tonsils removed,

when I opened my eyes
after surgery,

the first person I saw
was my Uncle Adam

with a bouquet of flowers.

[laughs] He was always
that type of person.

He'd always bring flowers.

There's Stanley in the middle.

Uncle Stanley was the
one you noticed out

of the whole entire family.

So he was very tall.

He had a beautiful
smile, very funny guy.

Theresa was the sweetest.

All us cousins would fight.

Who does Aunt Theresa
like more?

[laughs] Do you like me
more than this cousin,

than that cousin?
We loved her.

She was the sweetest.

She was like an angel.

And this is their
honeymoon literally

right before they took Tylenol.

So they had their
future here in America.

My grandpa thought that this
was the best thing for them,

is to come to America, so
they could have a better life.

And then, later,
after they died,

my grandpa said he made the
worst mistake of his life.

[gentle music]

- My name is Joseph Janus.

Janus.

My brothers,
Adam Janus, Stanley Janus.

- So do you remember
what that day,

the day in September,
what it was like?

- It was beautiful weather.

It was nice and sunny,
nice and warm, no rain.

It was a gorgeous day.

I was at the company
working at Schwinn.

Because I got a phone call.

I know it was around
2:00 or 3:00.

My foreman called me up.

He said, "Joe,
you got a phone call."

Something like that.

And then-- I didn't
know Arlington Heights.

I didn't know where the
hospital was, you know.

I called my brother, Stanley.

And he says,
"Well, I wait for you."

He says,
"We're going to go together

to Arlington Heights Hospital."

[sirens wailing]

So I got to the hospital,

and then all the family
was there.

And they said that Adam died
of heart attack.

♪ ♪

- He was a healthy man.

He was a postal man.

He was always on the go,

and he had no issues
with his heart

from what the
family members knew.

So when they told
my family that he

died from a heart attack,
they couldn't believe it.

♪ ♪

- Yeah, it didn't
make sense to us.

So meantime, my mother asked
us to come to her house.

♪ ♪

My brother, Stanley, he says,
"No, we're going to go

to the house to lie down."

But my mother says, "No,
why don't you come with us?"

You know.

So when he came in,
then we start talking.

Like, he was sitting
here in front of us,

and he just fell down.

♪ ♪

And when he fell,

his mouth was--
white stuff

was coming out from his mouth.

His eyes turned backwards,
I seen, you know.

So they called the ambulance.

♪ ♪

- OK, Chuck.

- OK.

I don't think this
was a good idea.

- So we dug that up.

- Yeah, this--
this is about right.

That was our official report.

I haven't seen it since the
night of the incident, yeah.

- And your name on the bottom?

- Lieutenant Charles C. Kramer.

That's me.

[ominous music]

It was Wednesday,
September 29, '82.

And the first call came
in just before noon,

and the second call came
in-- it was about 5:40,

something like that.

But when we got there,
there was

an ambulance, the paramedic
squad-- a squad car.

There was crowds
of people everywhere.

And as they pulled up,
I started walking

up to the front of house.

I could hear screaming coming
out of the house, so I ran in.

And there was a young man
laying on the floor.

This is the brother
of the first man.

The first fellow
was Adam Janus.

This is Stanley.

He's about 25 years old.

And the paramedics
are working on him.

And as I walked in,
I had a great deal of faith

in these people.

They were good paramedics.

And I looked up.

One looked up at me.

I could almost see
the fear in his face.

He said, "This is the same
thing as this morning.

We're losing him."

And while I was standing
there, a young girl came up,

and she was hysterical.

And her newlywed
husband is on the floor,

and she was screaming,
"Stanley, Stanley!"

And she was grabbing
on to my arm.

And the next thing I knew,
she groaned and collapsed

right next to me.

And I bent down,
turned her over.

And the thing I'll
never forget is,

the eyes were fixed and dilated
as if they were already dead.

And they were not
reactive to light.

She was just a little thing.

I'll never forget that,
when she grabbed onto my arm

and then went down.

So now, I have six paramedics
working on the two people,

and I'm starting to think,
"This isn't heart attacks.

This isn't all heart"--
one, I'll buy,

but I'm not going to buy it

on the 25-year-old
and a 19-year-old--

something's wrong.

We packaged up the patients
in the two ambulances.

The paramedic squad said,
they said,

"You got to come too."

I don't know what
we're dealing with.

When we got to the hospital,
Dr. Kim came walking out,

and he couldn't believe it.

He-- they just left.

They went back to
their house to plan

the funeral for their brother.

- I remember my mom wailing
and screaming over the phone.

It was so scary.

I thought my dad died.

And I didn't know
what happened.

And she was just screaming,
because I didn't know who she

was really, like, talking to.

And when she got off
the phone, she said,

"We're going to go
and pray right now.

"We're going to
go to the bedroom

"and pray to Jesus
and to God and ask

"God and Jesus
to help our family,

because something
is happening."

[tense music]

- We were fortunate
in Arlington Heights.

We had our own
health department.

And Helen Jensen was our
village health nurse,

and she was, I believe,
second-in-command

in the health department.
- Here you go.

- All right, so I'm going to
clip it for you.

- And I had her home phone
number, so I called her.

- Patience.

- I have patience.

I have patience.

- And I told her,
and she-- boom.

She made sure her husband
and kids had their dinner,

and she was over there.

She was over there
in no time at all.

She only lives about three
blocks from the hospital,

to begin with.
- OK.

- Beautiful human being,
wonderful woman.

- Say your name.

- I'm Helen Jensen.

I wanted to be a nurse
from the time I was seven.

And remember, I'm 84,
almost 85 years old now.

And there weren't
a lot of choices.

You were either a nurse
or a teacher or a secretary.

And I love nursing.

I've always loved nursing.

How old was I?

44, 45.

I had two children
that were,

well, young pre-teens.

I lived a suburban
housewife that worked

full-time, much to the dismay
of many of my neighbors.

I was in a neighborhood
where I was told,

when I went back to work,
that our mothers

do not work in this area.

I worked.

[laughs]

I came home from work.

It was a very warm
September day.

And in the middle of dinner,
I got a phone call

from the fire department

from Chuck Kramer,
who was a lieutenant

in the fire department.

He was in charge that day.

I went to the
emergency room, and I--

because they didn't know
what they'd picked up.

They didn't know
if it was infectious.

They didn't know anything.

I'm curious.

Nurses are very curious people.

And nurses ask
a lot of questions.

That's the only way
you really know

how to take care of people,
is if you find out what's

really wrong with them,
what's really

going on in their heads.

And I've always
been good at that.

So I saw this lady
standing off to one side,

this young woman,
and I went up to her,

and she was Adam's wife,

the young man
who had died in the morning.

- The neighbor was able--

she was Polish, and she was
able to interpret for Helen.

Helen did a great job
to get that information

out of somebody who can't
really speak English.

- And she told me Adam
was not feeling well.

He thought he had a cold
and had called in sick.

He had picked up his
children at about 11:30,

and he went to the--

to Jewel on the way home
and picked up some Tylenol,

and then came home
and had lunch,

and then went
into the other room and died.

♪ ♪

I mean, this was a shock.

This was a healthy young
man who was suddenly dead.

The family came together
to make the funeral plans.

And they were all together
at the house.

Stanley had back problems,
and he asked his wife

to go get him some Tylenol.

So she went and got the bottle
of Tylenol and gave him two,

and then she took
two out for herself--

a complete mystery.

What I thought,
listening to the story--

the only three commonality
between these three people

was Tylenol.

♪ ♪

So in my mind,
I needed to go out to prove

to myself what was going on.

I had to go
and look at the house.

- That night?

- Yes.

And I went into the bathroom
and found a bottle of Tylenol.

And I brought it
out to the kitchen.

I opened it
and counted the pills,

and there were
six pills missing,

and there were
three people dead.

And I said,
"It has to be the Tylenol."

I also went through
the garbage and found

the receipt that
had been purchased

at Jewel that morning.

- What made you go through
the garbage at this point?

- I'm nosy.

[laughs]

I went back to the
emergency room, presented it

to the medical examiner
and the police,

and they laughed at me.

- Because she said
it very quickly.

She said,
"It's got to be the Tylenol."

They kind of looked at her
like she had two heads.

"What do you mean,
the Tylenol?"

- I'm holding it-- the bottle--

and the receipt.

And I laid it out in front
of the medical examiner,

and I counted it again
and told him the same thing.

"There are six capsules
missing.

"There are three people dead.

There has to be a correlation."

"Blah-blah-blah-blah,
no, that's fine.

The Tylenol is fine."

- Take me back to that
moment in the hospital.

You said you stamped your foot.

- I did stamp my feet.

- Describe that for me.

- These idiots
wouldn't listen to me--

these dumb young men who don't
know beans from apple butter.

I know people.

I know this is what's happened.

I said, "This is it.

"This is what is causing
these people to die.

Find out why."

They're not going
to listen to me.

I am a nurse,
a woman in shorts.

[ominous music]

Why would the men--
all the men standing

back there listen to me?

- And they weren't
believing her at that point.

- Yeah, I was angry.

I went home.

I was very upset.

I was teary.

- I had a good buddy
of mine, Phil Cappitelli.

He was also a lieutenant
on the fire department.

And he called.

He said,
"Chuck, what's going on?"

I said, "Phil,
we've had a strange day."

I said,
"We've got one dead

"and two not doing very well
at the hospital,

all with the same symptoms."

And I said, "We don't
know what's going on."

I said, "The only thing
these people have in common

is they all took Tylenol."

He said, "This morning,
my mother-in-law

"works with a woman who
lost her little girl.

"She was 12 years old.

"She had a cold.

"She wanted to know,
how can a little girl die

at 12 years old with a cold?"

When I got a hold
of the nurse, I said,

"I just got a call from
one of our off-duty guys.

"A little girl died this
morning in Elk Grove,

"and she took Tylenol.

"And it's the same symptoms--
rapid, shallow breathing;

fixed, dilated pupils;
and unreactive."

So then they believed
Helen, who was saying,

"I think it was a Tylenol."

Well, now they had it.

The next thing I know
is, in the morning,

the phone rang,
and they said, "Lieutenant,

get up
to headquarters station."

So as soon as my relief
got in, I went up,

and that's when they said,
"It was the Tylenol," you know,

that they found it.

- I had a stiff drink
and talked to my husband,

and I finally went to bed.

At 5:30 in the morning--
he got up really early--

and he came in to me.

He said, "Helen, you're right.

"They're saying it on the news.

It was Tylenol."

- 12-year-old Mary Kellerman
was a student at Jane Addams

Junior High in Schaumburg.

And according
to school officials,

she had a cold,
which is probably why she

took the contaminated Tylenol.

She died yesterday morning
at Alexian Brothers Hospital

in Elk Grove Village.

- She was a very good student
and a very likeable girl,

and she did an excellent
job in the classroom.

And she had an excellent
rapport with her classmates

and her teachers and so on.

I think it's a real tragedy.

- These deaths have
been associated with

the presence of cyanide
in two containers

of extra-strength Tylenol.

- The next morning,
they called the papers.

All around, the fire
departments and police

departments went
out with-- they

had loudspeakers on their
cars, driving up and down,

"Do not take Tylenol."

- Cyanide-contaminated
Tylenol has

been responsible
for three deaths

in the Arlington Heights area.

Do not take Tylenol
until further notice.

- And I was an assignment
editor at Channel 2

in the summer of 1982.

There was some sort of bulletin
from one of the authorities

that there was
going to be a press

conference about a series
of poisoning deaths.

And many of them were
in the same family,

but they weren't all
in the same family.

- A frightening pattern
began to take shape

some five hours later
in the neighboring

suburb of Arlington Heights.

When 28-year-old Adam
Janus was admitted

to Northwest
Community Hospital,

his heart and lungs
had collapsed.

He died a short time later.

A brother, 25-year-old
Stanley Janus, and his wife,

Theresa, were later admitted
with the same symptoms.

Stanley Janus died around
8:00 last night,

and today, his wife still
is listed in extremely

critical condition.

Meanwhile, in the quiet,
close-knit neighborhoods

of the two brothers and
little Mary Kellerman,

there is shock,
grief, and a feeling

that it couldn't possibly
have happened here.

- Everything stopped,
and all we did

was focus on this one story.

Everyone in the operation
focused on the one story.

- My name is John
"Bulldog" Drummond--

- It was an enormous
pressure situation.

- --a retired reporter
for Channel 2 News in Chicago.

- Dr. Arthur Hull
Hayes says there

are a number of ways for
citizens to be more vigilant.

- Those of the years
I worked in Chicago,

I guess the Tylenol story was
as big a story, a crime story

that this city's ever
had in recent years,

at least since World War II.

And of course,
as you can imagine,

the headlines of the
newspapers, the coverage

electronically, it became
a major, major story.

And for about a
week or so, that's

all we did in our stories--
was talking about doing

Tylenol, Tylenol, Tylenol.

- The first recorded death
was in Elk Grove Village.

In Arlington Heights,
three are now dead.

Last night, the death
of a Winfield woman

was ruled poisoning.

- There's no sense
in it at all,

and it's just
terribly upsetting.

Could have happened
to anyone, but I can't

believe it happened to them.

- In Chicago today,
city inspectors

began checking stores to
be certain all Tylenol

was off the shelf.

The supplies are all
being tagged and will be

taken to the labs for testing.

The city order came
from the mayor.

In a midnight news
conference,

she also appealed
to the public

to turn in
all Tylenol products.

- We would like them to
get it out of their home.

That's number one.

It would aid and assist the
police in this investigation

if they had the time and the
place of purchase of Tylenol

in the city.

- This is very unusual.

And a person to go out
getting-- seeking relief

from pain
and end up being poisoned,

you can imagine the
reaction of everybody.

- At the State Department of
Health Toxicology Laboratory

today, police from
around the Chicago area

brought bottles of
suspected Tylenol capsules.

Cyanide is so deadly, an
amount the size of a pea

can kill you.

- It had Ty Fahner,
who was the attorney general

at that time to Mayor Byrne,

and they
did not have an explanation.

So the first news
conferences were really

to let people know
something had happened

but couldn't explain it.

- So we produced massive flyers
for the projects where they

may not have
television and into

the Spanish and Mexican areas.

And the police department,
community beat reps,

Lenora Cartwright,
people from Human Services

are distributing the
flyers and warning people--

- The "Chicago Defender"
was the weekly newspaper

when I was there.

It was a paper that--

they would send newspapers
on trains in the South,

because they didn't
have Black news there.

It was very important
to the Black community

to have its own voice.

People were afraid
in the community.

They were calling
"The Defender" asking,

"What should we do?"

It was just terrible.

I remember they were
going to CHA buildings.

- I'm here to see if you
have any Tylenol capsules.

- No, I don't have any.

- You don't have any?

No Tylenol at all?

- No, no Tylenol at all.

- OK.

- They were looking
for more bottles

that may have been
contaminated.

They had to find out, and it
also gave a sense of comfort

to the people who were
uptight about possibly

buying contaminated Tylenol.

It was a very
popular drug then--

painkiller, rather.

- This product may be
contaminated with cyanide

and should be destroyed.

- If you have a Tylenol bottle
marked that way, destroy it.

- This affected everybody.

And the amount of
terror-- if you

want to have somebody in
terror or scared, frightened--

the community was very
frightened about this.

- We're taking off the shelf
all the Tylenol capsules.

- If you have Tylenol,
bring to school.

Bring it to school, and we
will take it to the police.

- Meanwhile,
the warning process goes on.

At this uptown adult
education center,

Department of Human
Services personnel

were giving out flyers today,
warning of the Tylenol threat.

- Because of the
cyanide poisoning,

people were afraid of,
obviously, taking Tylenol.

But people became afraid
of anything that was out--

security, tamper-proof
caps, which weren't

even barely in existence then.

So you think about
toothpaste, shampoo.

People were freaking out
about buying anything.

There was kind of
like a hysteria.

- And this morning,
the people of Chicago

began turning in
Tylenol at firehouses

and at police stations.

- I think it's terrible.

Somebody-- somebody's crazy.

- I think what bothers me
more than just this incident--

if it can happen with this,
what else can it happen with?

That's the part that really,
really gives you the creeps.

- It was a nightmare scenario.

You think about all
the breaking stories

that we've covered--

Paxton Hotel fire,
you know, the American

Airlines jet crashing,
the Plainfield tornado.

Those things were pretty
much known at the time.

This was a stone-cold
mystery,

and it went on like this
for days and days and days

without knowing
what had happened.

It was a terrifying moment.

- Now an Elmhurst
woman is known

to have died from cyanide
after taking Tylenol.

- So my name is John
Millner, M-I-L-L-N-E-R.

And I believe I was Detective
Sergeant at that time.

- My name's Herb Hogberg,
and I was a detective

with the Elmhurst
Police Department

at the time of
the Tylenol case.

The assignment was work
with the death investigation

of Mrs. McFarland.

- I believe I was
in the station,

and I don't even
remember who called,

but mentioned this
McFarland lady

who had subsequently passed.

She was poisoned,
they thought, in Lombard.

And then, they advised us,
because she lived in Elmhurst.

So we got permission
from her father,

I believe, at the time
to enter her house.

Because the sooner we
start finding the stuff,

the better it is,
the more we can figure out

where specifically
did she buy this stuff,

where did other
people get this,

you know,
what stores are targeted?

Is it just in our area?

Is it local?

Is it national?

I mean, who knows?

So Detective Hogberg
and I went to the home,

and we tried to gain entry.

And we were able to get
entry through the window,

the bathroom window.

And we opened the
window, climbed in there.

First place you went to
was the medicine cabinet.

Popped a Tylenol bottle,
and it didn't look right.

Something just didn't look
right with those pills.

Subsequently,
we learned that they

were tainted with cyanide.

We'd never saw anything
like this before,

never experienced this before.

- The business she worked
at was Illinois Bell

at that time, and they
had fluorescent lights

in the building.

Fluorescent lights blinked.

They worked off
the transformers,

and there was
problems with a lot

of lighting in a lot of places,
where it would get people's--

bother their eyes.

And eventually,
they'd end up with headaches,

and most of the people
that worked with her

took Anacin,
Bufferin, and products

like that for their headaches.

- I'm telling you,
these were scary times.

We didn't know who
the offender was.

We know that there's somebody
out there trying to poison

people, and people who
are getting poisoned

had no clue that
it was happening.

♪ ♪

So I'm thinking--
and I think Herb did

as well-- we talked about it.

How many other people in
Elmhurst have tainted Tylenol?

I mean, this is a scary thing.

It's like, this is
not just one person.

I mean, how many--

Elmhurst is, at the time,
a town of 50,000 people.

How many people have tainted
Tylenol in their home?

- The death of 35-year-old
Paula Prince stunned

her family and friends.

Her body was discovered last
night inside her apartment

on Chicago's Near North Side.

- A contact had call me and
said, "Drummond," he said,

"We've located a woman who
was a Tylenol victim--

"that is, with cyanide--

"who lives, I think, over
in Sandburg Village"--

which was a popular place
for young people back then--

"on the Near North Side."

He said, "She's in the
apartment right now."

I was at the station.

I went over immediately
with the crew.

And we saw the woman
being taken out,

the stewardess being
taken out on a stretcher.

- Investigators
say it appears she

had collapsed into her closet.

Her sister, Carol Prince,
says she last talked

with Paula on Wednesday.

It is believed
that Paula Prince

took the Tylenol that killed
her sometime

Wednesday evening.

The cyanide-laced capsules
that killed Paula Prince

were purchased from this
Walgreens store

at Wells and North Avenues.

Store management pulled all
the Tylenol off the shelves

on Thursday, one day after
Paula Prince's death.

- I signed a death certificate
out this morning as follows.

Acute cyanide toxicity.

Manner of death-- undetermined.

- Dr. Stein stopped
short of calling

Prince's death a murder.

However, her friends did not.

- I-- there's nothing
that I can say.

I mean, it's just,
it's not right.

It's not right at all.

The guy's a maniac.

I mean, Paula was murdered.

She was just murdered.

- Memorial services were being
held for three other victims.

[bells tolling]

- I remember being
at the funeral,

and I remember seeing my
Aunt Sophie, my Aunt Theresa,

my grandparents.

- 19-year-old Theresa
Janus and 25-year-old

Stanley Janus were
married in this

church just three months ago.

Today, their caskets
were carried by members

of their wedding party.

Services for
Stanley's brother,

27-year-old Adam Janus,

were held here, too.

- And then, my grandma--

I just thought she was
going to die right there.

She just, like--
all she did was cry.

I mean, she was, like, gasping
for air and everything.

And it was terrible,
and everybody was getting--

constantly,
they were popping pills.

I think they were
probably, like,

anxiety pills from the doctor.

- In the name of the
Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit--

- You have cardinals
and bishops

and, like, all these people,
camera people, and you have--

I mean, this funeral was huge.

So for a child, you're just
like, "Oh, my goodness.

"This is crazy.

This is, like,
too much, almost."

♪ ♪

It was kind of hard.

It was kind of like
having paparazzi,

like Kim Kardashian or
someone.

And you're walking,
and there's everybody there,

and you can't breathe.

- Each casket was blessed
by Archbishop Bernardin,

who was here to console
the family.

- I remember my father
approaching Adam's coffin,

and he just couldn't take it.

He, literally, threw his
body on top of my uncle,

and the coffin
almost tipped over.

I'll never forget that.

[somber music]

- So it-- it really,
you know, killed us, you know.

But...

my brother--
my brothers were--

it was everything to me.

- When you speak
of the victims,

you speak of them as family.

- Yeah.

♪ ♪

That was real hard.

♪ ♪

I'll never forget
that young girl.

♪ ♪

This is what happens when
you get old, I guess.

I have several calls like
this that'll get to me.

But we were with that family.

I watched the family be
