The Institute of Engineering and Marine

Science at the Atlantic

Technical University, with

funds made available by the German

Federal Ministry for

Education and Research, in the

framework of the Wascall West African

Science Centre on Climate

Change and Adapted Land Use,

have trained three batches of marine

scientists since 2019.

The work done by these more than 30

youths is contributing to

strengthen the resilience

of the communities in our region to face

climate change in marine

environment and the coastal

land.

The knowledge produced by their research

is relevant to

understand the actual status of

the marine and coastal environment, such

as in terms of

biodiversity, erosion, sea level

rise, temperature variation and

ocean-atmosphere interaction and so on.

This knowledge also is contributing to

the State Foundation for Ocean

Observation programs

and to reinforce the management

capabilities in the

context of climate change.

Our alumni are working with NGOs, are

working also with

government agencies related to

conservation and some of them are

pursuing their academic

paths by doctoral programs

in the US, Germany and in Ghana.

My name is Abubacarr Kujabie from the

Gambia, a student in the

second batch program, the

Climate Change and Marine

Science Master's program.

I am currently the coordinator for one of

the projects funded by the European Union

called Global Climate

Change Alliance project.

I was fortunate to be appointed as the

project coordinator

simply because my program or my

master's program is really related to

what the project is

addressing, that is climate

change, coastal and

marine environment issues.

So I stood in a better position among

other candidates to be

given the project to coordinate.

My thesis was on seagrass

mapping and characterization.

I was also looking at climate change

issues that could affect

the seagrass morphology.

Those are environmental parameters for

instance, temperature, salinity and pH.

I'm Mr. Gilles from Cote d'Ivoire, an alumni

of Wascall Cabo Verde holding a master's

degree on climate change and marine

sciences from the

Atlantic Technical University of

Cabo Verde.

After my graduation, I got the

opportunity to apply the

knowledge again during this program

by working with an NGO on marine species

conservation in the first marine

protected area of my country.

Specifically, I'm working toward the

conservation of critically endangered

geeta fish and angel

shark species in the NPA.

Additionally, I've been involved in sea

turtles conservation by

joining the West African Sea

Turtles Conservation Network as deputy

program coordinator.

In summary, I can say that this program

is an enriching program

that trains young West

African leaders in the field of climate

change and marine sciences.

I'm Mayara Lorenço from Cabo Verde and

I'm part of the

Wascall Cabo Verde master's

program on climate

change and marine science.

I was from the first cohort.

After finishing the Wascall program, I

got a position as a

marine technical assistant

at the Ocean Science Centre, Mindello,

the only oceanographic

research centre of the country.

I worked on the program called Costa Rica

System Monitoring Cabo Verde.

Well, the Wascall program contributed

enormously for me to be

able to get this position.

The multidisciplinary approach of the

program was able to

give me a great background,

to be a great acquisition as a technician

for the kickoff of the first

systematic monitoring program.

In the coastal habitats of Cabo Verde.

The best part for me was

the shipboard training.

Well, my master thesis contributed to the

Atlantic literacy as we

provided the first map

of intermediate particle maximum in the

North and South Atlantic region.

Well, and we look for the relation with

the zooplankton deovatica migration.

Well, this all is part of the ocean

biological pump that is

highly likely to change due to increase

of carbon dioxide and climate change.

My name is Melissa Ndure. I'm from Sélio.

I currently work at the Environment

Protection Agency as

a senior environmental

attached to the Natural Resource

Management Department.

The Wascall master's program on climate

change and mine science has

built my capacity and skill

in different areas, starting from

research strategies,

time management, teamwork,

introducing me to scientific programs,

and most importantly,

to critical thinking.

Now I can better lead and execute

different types of projects.

My master's thesis focuses

on SINGAS ecosystem services

and community awareness about the

presence and significance of SINGAS beds.

SINGAS has been identified as a climate

change mitigation to

globally, and Sélio has also

included SINGAS in its national

adaptation plan for the

fight against climate change.

Therefore, this research will add to the

ongoing study of SINGAS and Sélio,

and also help to understand how locals

view SINGAS and the role it

plays in their daily lives

and in the fight against climate change.
