So a lot of

the time
the making select process in the cut tab

doesn't end there a lot of the time
I will continue to refine my selects

in the edit tab

to better prepare my project for when it's
time to start piecing together

my main edit.

So in this video I'm going to be walking
you guys through my process

on how I refine my selects in the edit tab
even further

and prepare my project
to start piecing together my main edits.

So with that being said,
let's jump right into this lesson.

So at this stage

I've already made my selects
for every single timeline of the project.

Each timeline was a specific
day of the project, so, you know,

we have a considerable amount of footage
in each timeline,

and even though I've made my selects,
I've cut out all the garbage.

There is still a lot of footage.

If I was to put all of the footage
from this entire project

into one timeline, it would probably
still exceed an hour in length.

And with this specific project,

the time frame that I'm working with
is anywhere between 1 to 2 minutes.

So obviously that's a lot of clips.

I'm not going to be using
most of those clips.

So over my career of editing,
I've developed a method that allows me

to refine my selects even more
and only keep the best of the best.

Now, I'm not deleting
any of these other selects that I've made.

I'm just extracting the clips
that are even more visually appealing,

bringing them to the end of the timeline.

And then eventually
the goal is to just create one timeline

with all the selects
from the entire project.

Right now
all the selects are spread out among

different timelines
for each day of the project.

The goal is to bring all the selects
into one timeline

so that when we are ready to start
editing our main project, we can just have

two timelines open, one above,
which is all best selects.

And down below
we will have our main timeline

so we can really just have those two open
and we could just be sourcing

all of our clips

from the timeline up above,
just dragging them down to the one below.

So let me show you guys
exactly how I do this.

So what I'll do is go into my timelines
folder.

We can see that I have all of my timelines
here and let's just sort these by name.

So everything is in chronological order
and I'll open up the first one.

We have it open here.

So what I'm going to do
is scrub through the shots

and the ones that stand out to me
the most.

I'm going to hold the option
and press up the up

arrow key
and bring it up to the track up above.

I'm going to do this for all the clips
that are the most visually appealing to me

and separate them in this way.

So I'm going to have this second

track here of my selects that are,
you know, my absolute favorites,

the ones that stand out to me
from the rest of these clips.

Now with that second track selected,
what I'm going to do is command

C copy and command V paste them over here.

Now what I could do is hit Command D

and that is the raven shortcut
for delete gaps.

We can also access that
by going up into here.

You can just type in gaps, delete gaps,
and that's under edit.

Command D is a shortcut for that
when you are using Raven Cloud.

So I'll just select everything here
and I'm going to option down,

bring it back to that layer over here.

And now what I'm going to do is
go back into my timelines folder over here

and I'm going to hit command
and I'm going to make a new timeline.

I'm going to call this one
All best selects.

I'm going to click Create.

So now with this timeline open,
what I can do is go back to the timeline

that we just made, our refined selection
to select all of that command.

C Copy it and bring it over here and hit
command V paste it in.

Now we can see that this timeline

doesn't have the same grade on it
that this one does.

And that's
because if you remember in the cut tab,

what I did was I went into the color
section, the color tab, and in here

I was able to apply a light over
top of the entire timeline.

You can access the timeline.

No, no tree over here
by clicking timeline.

And you can see that we have a node here.

If I hit command D,
I can turn it on and off.

We can see that we have a light
applied over top of our entire timeline.

Now don't worry about the color tab yet.

I'm going to be diving deep, deep into the
color tab in that section of the course,

but for now it's definitely beneficial
to know that you can just apply a lot over

top of your entire timeline
just to make the process of making select

a bit more appealing, a bit more fun

because it's not fun
looking at boring flat footage.

It looks a lot nicer when you have a lot
applied over top of it.

So what I could do is copy this node
command C

and go back into my all best selects
timeline.

Go back into the color tab over here.

We can also flip through
the different timelines

here as well, so there's
no need to go back into the edit tab.

And what I'll do is go in to timeline
here.

Option is to create a new serial node
and then command

V to paste that same light.

And now we are going to have that same
color effect.

All the videos that are in this timeline,
which is going to hold

all of our refined selects
from the entire project.

Now, this isn't necessarily

the way that you would go about color
grading your final project.

I personally just like to throw a lot over
top of it earlier on

because it just immerses me
more in the final product.

I get a better idea of what
the final product is going to look like.

Looking at flat footage is so boring

it can be unmotivated to
to look at that image, adding

a bit more color,
a bit more contrast earlier on.

So I can

and I get an idea of what the final video

is going to look
like is very helpful for me.

So now what are we going to do?

Because we have this new all best selects

timeline,
we're going to do the same process

for every single timeline,

refine the selects

dragged into the end of the timeline

and bring them into this
all best select timeline.

So I'm just going to close this
actually right here, and I'm going to hit

the little button top right here
so we can see two timelines at once.

And down here
I'll just open all that select so

now we can open up all the timelines
that we want up up top over here.

And as we make our refine selects

towards the end of the timeline,
we can just drag them down into here.

So let's go into our timelines folder
and let's open up our second one here.

We can see it's another short one,
not much going on.

I think this is another day when me and
Brand were just testing out the camera.

So pretty minimal shots,
not too much going on here,

but there is one shot in this sequence
that stands out to me.

It's this one here.

I do like the motion
following him in down into the water.

So I'm just going to raise that up
one track and I'm just

I can either command, see,
or I can also just hit option

and drag it over here, and that will
automatically make a copy of it.

And I'm just going to drag it down over
here to our All best select timeline.

Now let's go to another timeline
that has some more clips.

We've got Longboarding day one.

Now when I'm making Select
specifically for this project,

I'm taking into consideration

that there are going
to be two parts to this video.

There is the main edit,
and then the plan is to

also make a behind
the scenes edit afterwards.

So the behind the scenes
is actually going to be longer

than the main edit, The main edit,
it's going to be about 1 to 2 minutes.

The behind the scenes is probably going
to be about 4 to 6 minutes

just because there's

a lot of events that I want to cover
that happened throughout this project.

So knowing that I'm going to be making
a behind the scenes section to this video,

I want to refine my selects in a way
that's going to make it even easier

for me to pick my behind the scenes
footage for that second part of the video.

So we have the longboard day open here.

I'm just going to open it up
above over here.

Actually, we can just we don't even need
to see this one any more.

We can just open it like this.

And what I'm going to do
is I'm going to start dragging

my selects
for the main video to the track above

and then the selects for the behind
the scenes to the track above that one.

Let's take a look here.

So let's let's look at what shots are like
The nicest which ones look the best

So this looks like a pretty beautiful shot
of him riding past this mountain.

I definitely want to use that
in my main edit so I'll just option up

arrow, bring it one track up
and we could see that we have this

square
around our image in the preview window.

And that's because we have transform
selected right here.

So if we click off of it,
that's going to go away.

And if we scrub through our timeline,
let's

try to find some more beautiful shots.

This one, incredible. I love that.

I actually like this
one more than the previous one.

So I'll just option up
that one and option down that one.

This one's nicer, in my opinion.

Let's look for some behind the scenes
moments as well.

So this clip right here, it looks cool.

I wouldn't use this in the main video,
but this is something that could be good

for the behind the scenes.

So what I'm going to do is hold option
and click up twice that way.

We have the behind the scenes
clips on track number three on V three

and the main selects on track two.

I'm just going to go ahead
and do this for the entire timeline.

So same with this process.

I don't really have to use my mouse,
I can just use the keyboard shortcuts

up down to jump between clips,

option up, option
down to move clips to different tracks.

And then I can also use one, two

and three
to playback the clips at different speeds.

So that's really all
my hands are doing right now.

Just using those keys
to refine my selects.

So over here
we have this great clip of Brynn

holding the phone on a little gimbal
and we can see that

we have a little magic
and the attach to the phone as well.

This was when we were starting the project
and we didn't even have actual ends

for the phone.

We were just using drone.

Andy's in the house
in the case of the phone.

But anyways, it's a great behind
the scenes clip, so I'm making

sure to add that to track three
so that I can very easily

tell that that is for the behind
the scenes.

Same with all of these clips.

So over here

we have some clips of me
shooting with the phone handheld,

making sure
to also drag those up to that beats track.

Now, one thing we can also do
is actually rename the tracks here.

So video, Video three, we can just click
that over there and call this beats

or we can call video to refine selects

and the bottom line is just selects.

So the you know, the bottom layer
isn't all the footage from that day

because we already cut out
all the garbage,

but it's already just our selects
and we're leaving it there

because you never know when you might want
to go back into a timeline.

You might need some more footage to use
for the section that you're editing.

So it's good to have that there.

Don't really delete key moments because
you could be shooting yourself in the foot

in case you need something in the future.

Everything is still in this timeline, but
we are really just refining the selects

and that makes a lot of sense
in this situation because we have,

you know, an hour of selects,
but we're making a 1 to 2 minute video.

Awesome.

So I've gone through this timeline
and I've made my beats, selects

and my main selects.

So now what I'm going to do is I'm going
to first just select all of my refine

selects over here.

I can just command, see, copy them and
paste them to the end of my timeline here.

And just like we did before, I'm
going to hit command to delete those gaps.

I'm going to hit option down to bring them
back down to the first track.

And over here we have our refine selects.

Now we also have our Beats clips up here.

Let's do the same thing.

So command C, select all of those
and let's move over further down

in Timeline Command V, We got all of them
on the same track up there.

We can hit command D, delete the gaps

and option down twice
to bring it down to the bottom layer.

Now I want to set myself up
so that whenever I

look at this timeline,
I know what's what like.

I want to know
that these are my refined selects

and these are my behind the scenes
clips, my clips

that I could potentially use for the
behind the scenes section of this video.

So what I'm going to do
is just create a new marker over here.

So I'm going to hit M twice and that will
allow me to edit the marker properties.

I'm going to call this refine selects

and I'm going to make it green,

I'm going to hit done
and I'm going to option

click on that

to extend it.

You can see that we've extended the marker
now and I'm going to drag it over

top of my select over here

that way I can very quickly see,

okay, green is my refine selects

and then I'm going to make my beatsx
clips orange.

So I'm going to hit them twice, make
that an orange marker and just call this

beats click done and I'm going to option
or alt click on that.

And now I can drag it out.

And if I ever hover over it,
I could see it says beats.

If I hover over this one,
it shows me refine, selects

and just like we did before, I'm

going to grab those refine selects
and I'm going to drag them down

into my all best selects timeline.

Just like that, we are narrowing down

our selects to make the process
even easier for us.

Now what I can do is create a new timeline
as well

for all of the beta stuff,
because why not?

You know,

if we're doing this
for all of our main selects

and we're also going

to have to put together a video
for the behind the scenes section of this,

we might as well take all of the behind
the scenes clips that I like

and put them into one timeline as well.

So let's go up into our media pool.

Let's go into the timelines
folder over here.

Let's hit command and to make
a new timeline and let's call this beats

selects.

We're going to click Enter
and we have created the beta selects.

We have it down here

and we're going to do the same thing
for these clips over here.

We can select all of them
and drag them on down into beta selects.

So I'm going to open up
the actual project file from this project

to show you guys what my all best selects
timeline looks like.

So this is what the original timeline
looks like.

It might look a little bit crazy.

Is lock going on?

This is the main edit,
but I'm just going to open up the

the all best selects timeline here.

You can see these are all the groups.

So this would be like day one.

Maybe that's day to day three, day 45.

These are all the selects
from the project.

Now what I did in my all best selects
folder was I refined it even more.

So that's what that second track is.

These are the clips that just like really,
really stood out to me

because even in this timeline,
the duration of all of my selects

is still pretty long.

So if I was to even drag
all these back down to the first track,

let's just select everything here
and hit Command D to delete the gaps

and we can delete that first part.

We can see that all the selects,
the refine selects,

they still go to 16 minutes in length,

which is way too long for this project.

I'm looking to create a video
that's 1 to 2 minutes long,

so I'm going to undo that command Z.

So what I did was refine
my selects even more to the second track

and I copied and pasted those to this area
here to the end of my timeline.

So these are the refine selects from the
all best selects once again right here.

And then what I did was I refined them
even more to this time length right here.

So from all the selects from the entire
project, hours and hours of footage,

I was able to narrow it
down to this group of clips right here.

These are the most visually stimulating
clips and I tried to cut them down

so that they would only be about 3
to 4 seconds in length.

I wanted things to feel a bit snappier
and I can always extend them if I want to,

but I kind of just did this
to make a little sizzle reel of the entire

project, to see all of the best moments
in one little place.

And really when it came down
to piecing together the main video,

all I did was create a new timeline
command and call it main edit.

And I would

look at the main edit tab down here

and up here I have my all best
selects timeline and really

I would focus a lot on just this last
narrowed down group of selects.

So at this stage what I did was I put down

the song in the main edit timeline.

Underneath that I created a new track
for any kind of narration

so you could just make a new track,
call it narration.

And in here I would add audio recordings
of the narration of the project.

So at the beginning I didn't really know
exactly what I wanted to say.

So to help myself visualize where I wanted
the narration to fall in my timeline,

where I wanted it to take place,
I would go up into the effects

library over here and just go into titles
and just grab some text.

And I would put that text over
in different places in my timeline

and just write out

what it is that I want to say

at this specific point in my timeline.

So I would line up the text to the music
and write out what I want to say

at that stage.

So in this case, the video starts with
I have a love hate relationship

with the tools of my crafts.

So what I would do is time the text
to the specific points of the song

that I want to narrate in and just kind of
make sure that the text flows.

Make sure that I actually have enough time

to say the text and just structure
out the project in that way.

So once I had my narration and audio
in my main edit timeline,

then it really just comes down
to going into my all

best selected timeline
and dragging in the visuals

that I think work best
with the certain parts of my timeline.

Now, in this video,
I'm not actually going to be assembling

the main video that's going to be saved
for a separate video.

But do keep in mind
that when I was creating

this video for OnePlus,
even though I had spent all this time

refining my selects,
it still took me two full days

of editing to structure
my main edit in a way that I liked.

But the thing that really did help me
make the process

a lot more
seamless was figuring out the music.

At first
I spent a long time looking for music.

It was hard to find a song that I thought

would work perfect for this, so I ended up
trying to make something from scratch,

which at first I thought might have been
a bit irresponsible

of me to try to do that
at such a late stage of the project.

But fortunately for me
it did end up working out.

But yeah,
just getting that music in your timeline,

getting the narration
to a place that you're happy with it,

and then you just start
dragging your clips down, experimenting,

playing with the timing,
all of that stuff.

Now, to a lot of you, it might seem
like a ton of work to get to this point,

just so you can start piecing together
your main edit.

I know a lot of people out

there would not go through the hassle
of refining their selects to this point.

They would basically just drag clips
straight from their media pool

that they know

they want to use in their edit,
right into their main edit,

and just start piecing together
videos like that.

But in my experience,
the process of refining your selects

is how you get really familiar
with your footage.

And when you're familiar
with your footage,

you're able to just tap into flow state
much faster.

When the time comes to actually piece
together your main video.

You've been through all the clips
several times.

You are very aware
of where you can find each clip

and you've also noticed
certain clips that you might not have

if you were to just be dragging stuff
from your media pool.

So for all of my projects,
I always use this method.

It's been very successful for me
and I think it's a key reason

as to why my productions
tend to stay at a certain level,

and that's
because I put care into making my selects,

into getting to know my footage,
into getting intimate with the project.

This is a process that needs to happen
in order to achieve that intimacy

with your project.

One thing that obviously helps
is just listening to music.

I like to just have my playlists going.

I like to listen to some progressive music
while making my select,

and if I ever have any cool ideas
or anything, I'll make sure to leave

a marker in my timeline to write it down,
or I will make a new timeline

called Experiment or something like that,
and just drag clips that I might

want to use for transitions and stuff
like that into that second timeline.

So in the future, it's

basically like a reminder of the ideas
that I had previously,

whereas you can very easily
forget those ideas because you're

working with so much footage.

So it's important to leave markers
and that kind of stuff

so that you can remember
the ideas that you had before.
