The first step of crafting a creative
look has to do with contrast.

Let's explore
how contrast affects emotion.

One of the major creative tools
that we have at our disposal

is the use of contrast,
which, remember, is

the difference between the brightest parts
and the darkest parts in the image.

Now different types of contrast
give different feeling.

So this very low contrast image

on the left doesn't feel super dramatic.

It almost feels calm and serene.

Things
just kind of feel softer and easier.

Whereas on the right
we have this really dramatic lighting

where this person's face just goes
almost all the way into darkness

on the right, and it's nearly
overexposed here on the highlights.

This is a vastly different feeling,
and we can control the tone of our movie

by controlling the contrast.

And here we have our example in the middle
that has high enough contrast

to look stylistic but not so strong,
like this one on the right.

This is a really important tool
for kind of pushing your images

in that feeling from kind of soft
and easy to harsh and dramatic.

And it can also just affect
the overall richness of an image.

This image on the left is nice,
but it almost feels like

it just needs some more work, whereas
the image in the middle feels refined.

It feels like we took some time
and really crafted it to look nice.

So working with creative contrast
is always kind of a balancing act between

making sure that your image looks refined,
looks like it was crafted and well done,

looks like it has life to it,
and also kind of lands where you want

on this emotional scale
from soft and easy to harsh and dramatic.
