when he was a caterpillar.

We must respect this little creature

for undergoing such a
startling metamorphosis.

- A place to live, and I found one.

It's really big and old,
kinda pricey, but it's mine.

buzzing and mating.

That sound they produce
always reminds me of heat.

It is the sound of summer.

- Seems somehow useless,
all those years underground,

spent in darkness, to live
only briefly in the light.

They die at the end of
the summer, you know.

- [Leroy] It's Petie Ponte.

- Who?

- It's Charles.

I had a dream that
Charles was a tiny figure

called Petie Ponte.

Petie represents all of
our hopes, yours, yours,

Charles and mine.

He was some kind of guide,

and though he doesn't look like Charles,

he symbolizes him somehow.

When I woke up, I saw Charles

as the embodiment of Petie Ponte.

It's an association I
can't seem to forget.

It sticks with me.

- I understand.

It reminds me of the
time when I had a dream

that my sister gave me a beautiful ring.

I was sad when I awoke
and the ring wasn't real,

but I still felt grateful
to my sister all the same.

- That's the kinda logic I mean.

to surprise Charles when he returns.

Create all kinds of feelings in me,

governed only by the laws of instinct,

deep desires, necessary reactions,

often cruel, always direct.

Those instinctual laws are the very basis

of all human history.

More spare time as a
result of our wonder brains

created more rational laws, ethical laws,

twisted religious laws,
moral laws, courts, jails,

speeding tickets, terrible
laws designed to crush us,

laws that had been warped
through time and history,

made by a society that has
forgotten, or worse yet,

denied its past, but all
are inseparably rooted,

in that not-too-distant monkey boys,

our free-thinking ape cousin,

those furry claws grasping a tree branch

can still be found in these
delicate painted fingernails.

This gorilla that lives inside
of every poet is still there,

waiting for us to follow
the only true laws,

the laws of instinct.

(sound of explosion)

- But they're blank.

- Exactly! You see?

They're universal laws,
beyond written language.

They remain undefined until acted upon.

They are pure, untouched by intellect.

They represent our uncontrollable actions,

our potential desires.

- Let me see if I have this right.

You want us to throw out
all of society's norms

and act like wild beasts?

- Yes, if that's the way
you feel like acting,

but only if that's the way you feel.

I'm not suggesting we automatically

become thieves and murderers.

- Unless, of course, we feel like it.
