middle of the worst storm

we’ve experienced
since we’ve been out here.

water just rushed in

And chance just came
back, but no Russell,

and my mind is blown.

Russell calls people tappers,
you know, quitters, and he said,

"Amber, if you tap out
here, I’ll make fun of you

the rest of your life."

Well, I bet he’s feeling
really bad right now.

Giovanna: It’s
absolutely mind-blowing.

Not a medical tap.

Just had had enough,
reached his point of no return,

and decided to
go home this far in.

Well, I’m glad
you’re back, chance.

Me too. Fernando:
Damn, it’s damn good

Fernando: We’re just
dodging bullets out here.

to finish strong for extraction.

Chance: Russell leaving
was almost as hard as dealing

with no light,
no fire, and cold.

It seemed liked he was
my family, and I was wrong.

Losing a partner is hard.

First, it was Melissa.

We worked well together.

Yeah. Here we go.

She showed me
that I don’t need to be

that guarded and
distrusting to people.

Felt like a sister to me.

And, then, Russ, who
was like a brother to me.

I’m trying to hold back
any agitation and anger,

but it’s hard.

Put his mind back together.

Like I’ve been drugged.

I know, man. I
feel like a sloth.

I know. I know how sloths feel.

Being 33 days in the jungle,
our body is definitely slowly

just kind of declining.

Ooh.

This is absolutely an
exhaustion unparalleled

to anything in my life.

As a firefighter, I do
work 24-hour shifts,

and often longer,
often three or four days

in a row on a brush fire.

But this is a level
of exhaustion

that I have never experienced.

Our bodies need so
much more than simply fish

and heart of palm.

[ Animals screeching ]

Russell and I as a team
were so good at this.

We had it down, had
an awesome system,

great spot and everything.

It is a little bit surprising
I’m the only one left

from the original XL male group.

I’m not surprised that
I’m here, but I’m surprised

that no other males from
the original group are.

Seeing Russell go was
an eye-opener in terms of

this jungle is ruthless.

It’s a gauntlet, and I just
got to go one more week,

make the right choices
for one more week.

Whoa.

This raft is becoming
more and more unstable.

It’s the morning of day 34.

We’re looking now towards
our next immediate goal

is building a raft and
getting out of here.

So, where are we?
We’re, like, right here.

We’re here with, you
know, high ground.

Yeah. We have to get to here.

Is that a one- or
two-day thing, you think?

That’s probably two days.

That looks like a
pretty far distance.

And if we have to go
up the current to get to

the next patch of high ground...

Well, at least we have
the current pushing us

on the second day. Mm-hmm.

All right. So, a two
day extraction, then.

Narrator: Surrounded
by 40 square miles

of impenetrable jungle and
flooded mangrove swamps,

the group’s only feasible route
to reach their extraction point

is a daunting,
two-day river journey

through 15 miles of
sun-scorched waters

that offer very little dry
land, but a deadly abundance

of caiman, piranha,
and giant anaconda.

Giovanna: Those caiman
are super aggressive.

Very enormous
anaconda in the water.

We’ve seen them near our camp.

Swimming is not an option.

We need to be out of
the water for extraction.

Amber: We have
five now instead of six,

so instead of two
rafts, we only need one.

Fernando: It would kind
of be cool to come together.

Definitely would.

And if we all oar together,
we’ll be going fast, man.

We’ll cover some ground.

We do have chance’s raft
from his 21-day experience.

Chance: It’s in rough
shape, to be honest.

Right.

Obviously, the more
logs we add to it,

the more it floats
out of the water.

We’re gonna chop all
the wood down we can.

It’s gonna have to be big.

Five people on a raft is
gonna be quite the raft.

[ Birds chirping ]

Oh, here it is.

This is the exact wood
that chance used for his raft,

so he is familiar with it.

Narrator: With over 16,000
species of trees in the Amazon,

the softwood and hollow
core of the cecropia

make it one of the
few that actually floats.

Fernando: No, it

Giovanna: What do you
think about width, like, here?

Maybe a little
bigger, you think?

I haven’t eaten in two days,
so the thought of starting

a raft from scratch when
we all are blacking out

when we stand up
seems unrealistic.

That’s why I decided
to make the trap today.

The idea is we
have agouti out here.

We have monitor lizard.

Basically, it’s a barrel
trap, so both sides flap up

and are held open
by a center pin.

And this is your first
time ever attempting it.

That’s kind of exciting.

Yeah.

I’ve been here for 34 days, and
I’ve attempted many, many traps,

and the only thing I’ve
managed to do out here

with all the traps, I
feel, is catch two fish.

Well, I have good
news and bad news.

The good news is the
tree is cut mostly through.

The bad news is it fell
maybe a foot or two... boom!

Right into another tree.

And it just doesn’t
seem worth the risk,

having that thing kick
out and smack you

and crack your rib,
break your jaw, or worse.

We have to just simply use
chance’s raft and break it up,

make kick-boards.

We all get a log or two.

Shannon: We can
split those logs in half.

You realize those logs held,
like, Melissa and I barely.

Yeah, but with a
kick-board, you...

A semi-floatation
would be beneficial.

We’re not gonna
be directly on it.

We need a [bleep] raft.

There are caiman.

There are anaconda.

I’m not afraid of a lot of
things, but at the same time,

we’re in the [bleep] jungle.

My weak, little body
right now paddling

on a kick-board would
make for a [bleep] great meal.

I’ve seen them.

To hack away at a tree
for three hours and then,

"oh, let’s just take a part
of your raft that you spent

a good 10 days
building so we can make

little floatation devices," it
just seems like the raft was

just a disposable
asset, and I’m frustrated.

Like, at this point,
if you guys want

to make kick-boards,
like, then I’ll just stay here,

and you guys extract,
and I won’t extract.

[ Chuckles ] What?!

You’re out of your
mind. Chance...

Leave me a fishing
line, I’ll build a raft

in the next 10 days after
that, and I’ll get to extraction.

I will stay here
as long as it takes

to build another raft and
make my own extraction.

Fernando: I’m really surprised
at how, like, funky the tone is

in the group.

I just pictured these
last four days being,

like, pure bliss,
like... me too.

It was a little shocking
to see chance’s reaction.

It might be that he
feels like a little bit

of an outsider still.

I say we just refortify it.

Yeah, we just fix
the first one if we can.

Me just raft alone?

Both our rafts?

Chance: Coming on this
extension of the 21-day challenge,

I kind of feel like I’ve almost
regressed in my progress

with team cohesion
and working with others.

I’d rather almost be
an individual again.

There seems like a
lot of division right now.

have something to say

or want something
brought up, just say it.

We want you to be with us.

chance, and it kind of hurt

our feelings last night when

the morning of day 39.

Big, big day.

Today is my first step
back towards my family.

It’s gonna be a
two-day extraction,

so it’s gonna be a long
day of paddling in the raft.

We’ll get as far as
we can, set up camp,

and row the rest of
the way tomorrow.

I think that, honestly,

as soon as we head out
to the main little river area,

that’s where the current hits.

It’s gonna be the hardest thing

for us to try and get out there.

I know Melissa
and I started off,

we fought the
current the entire time.

And by the end of the day,
we were beat down by the sun.

And that was exhausting.

Narrator: On the first day
of their two-day journey,

the group will battle currents
of up to nine miles per hour

in hopes of finding dry land

near the mouth
of the main river...

An area feared by locals for
its infestation of black palm,

bullet ants, and
red-bellied piranha...

The amazon’s largest and
most aggressive species

of flesh-eating fish.

Definitely a lot of dangers
out there... anaconda, caiman.

So aggressive, so aggressive.

Hopefully, the rafts hold
their structure, integrity.

Fernando: I know.

I feel an incredible combination
of fatigue and happiness

I’ve ever had in my life.

I never got the chance

to complete my 21-day
challenge my first time around,

definitely gave me
a new foundation.

I went from being an introvert

to somebody who really enjoyed

has meant so much to me.

And pushing myself to the limit

was the best thing
I could ever do.
