bacteria that came back

what we can treat out here.

Matt: So, you guys,

found out I've got some
sort of a flesh-eating bacteria.

To make sure I save
my foot, I got to go.

Yeah. I wish we had more time.

Ooh. Wow.

Amber: Halfway, we’ve
lost almost half the people.

This changes everything.

Matt was the greatest
asset to coming out here

to this 40-day challenge.

He is what held us
together as a family.

And now he’s gone.

I just really feel like we
lost someone really special.

Russell, what do you think?

The severity of
this is monumental.

This jungle has caused
three different injuries.

And if you come
out here and think

that you’re just gonna
skip through this challenge,

you have another thing coming.

Now, our health is
the number-one thing.

Narrator: Chance and Melissa
have collided with the "XL" tribe

after surviving 20
days on their own,

four miles upriver,

in the merciless
Amazon rainforest.

Melissa came into the
challenge determined

to prove her strength.

Melissa: I’m very
adventurous, I'm really daring,

and I'm a lot
smarter than I look.

Narrator: Her partner,
chance, is a former army ranger

aiming to show off his skills.

Chance: Grew up
being afraid of the dark,

so I hunted
terrorists in the middle

of the night in their backyard.

Melissa: Let’s go find firewood.

I thought that’s
what you wanted.

Yeah, I want to just focus
on, like, one thing at a time.

I’ve never really
worked with females,

especially in a
field environment.

[ Gasps ]

Melissa: The thought
that he might separate

and go off somewhere
else is scary to me.

This is gonna be a good meal.

- [Bleep]
- Badass chick, you are.

Melissa: It was kind
of like this turning point,

where he saw me
as, like, an equal.

Our brother-sister bond

there was completely
solidified forever.

Shannon: It was crazy.

We’d introduce ourselves

and figure out that Melissa
and chance are extracting.

They have a two-day extraction,
and this is their first day.

And they were on
their way out of here.

Melissa: I’m so excited that
I get to meet other people.

We had a rough day
today, to be honest.

We lost our, like, our
Amazon warrior today.

You guys can

Yeah, we’re a pair.

I went from being sad thinking
about Matt to happy, thinking,

"this is a blessing in

They’ve been on
that raft all day long,

so we’re just hoping we
can give them a good meal

and send them on their way
tomorrow to their extraction.

How cool is it?

I mean, you’re, like, on
your last day, day before.

So, this is our home.

Gosh, like, just hanging
out with these people...

They have a total community
of positive attitudes.

Their shelter’s badass.

Just, like, our shelter was
nothing... nothing like this.

I feel super blessed right now.
This is the coolest thing ever.

I can tell chance is
super pumped, too.

I’ve been, like,
the super mellow,

like, quiet person,
so, and then,

she’s happy to be around
more exciting people.

Oh, really?

Yeah, I'm a ranger.

It’s interesting to see their
dynamics and interaction,

and I was just happy that my
partner had some new faces.

I kind of feel like the
big brother now for her.

And going somewhere new
that made her happy after a long,

miserable, painful day
made me feel good.

What a crazy day.
Kind of weird, though.

Kind of an emotional
roller coaster for us.

Russell: I don’t know
what the situation is.

It was a very weird feeling.

We were down to five,
and all of a sudden,

two more come strolling up
halfway through the challenge.

We haven’t eaten
in a couple of days,

and with two extra
people to feed is a lot.

This is nice.

It’s a well-built raft, man.

You know, I'd rather have
Matt than both of those people.

Melissa, let’s grab a
handful of firewood, at least.

Absolutely.

When Matt left, you know,
we lost so much strength.

Matt was so strong.

And then here comes
chance after 21 days,

still buffed out like crazy.

Shannon: That’s always
a good thing to see...

Like, people in good
shape, because, you know,

you know when people
are working for that,

then they’ve got motivation.

And I just would love to have
someone like her out here.

The crazy part is that, like,

we haven’t been here
any longer than you.

Like, this is the exact same
point in both of our journeys.

It is. 20 days.

It’s, like, intersecting.

Chance: You guys are strong.

Like, I'm just blown
back by the experience.

You know, the survival
and coming out here...

That was great, but I
had a rough childhood

’cause I don’t
have a lot of family.

Both my parents
are incarcerated.

I’m just kind of overwhelmed
with emotions today...

You know, being at that
final cusp of completion,

but meeting a
phenomenal group of people

that are understanding
and willing to help out.

I’ve just done so much
internal reflection and growth

because of having
a partner like her...

Like, the biggest
takeaway for me.

- That’s good.
- I have, too.

Like, I don’t know what I would
have done without this guy.

He’s my... we’re
brother and sister.

Melissa and chance
would kick butt out here.

And with Matt
having to be taken out,

it would be nice to
have those extra hands.

stepping very far on the
edge is not a good idea.

This is my first time
casting from a floating raft.

Not too shabby at all.

Fishing’s been difficult,

but now I can literally
float to where I want to go,

have no obstructions,
get a full cast.

We are eating good today.

With Matt, you
know, out of the way,

the raft allows me to step up

and prove that I
can be the provider.

I was kind of upset

when y’all first got here,
because we had just lost Matt.

And Matt was my
partner from the beginning.

But I took a second
to really think about it,

and y’all deserve to
be on this challenge

just as much as anybody else.

that you can do it,

still not 100% sure yet.

It’s day 21 right now,
and the question is,

are chance and Melissa

mentally prepared
to stay out here

for another 20 days to
do the 40-day challenge?

You know, that’s the question.

Chance: I’m not sure.

As much as they need help,
we’re exhausted, we’re burnt,

and now 20 more days.

Melissa: I love it here.

I feel like I'm in my element.

This is the most alive and happy

I've probably
ever felt in my life.

I really want to stay
out here, but I don’t know

if I can with my
current situation.

At this point, I feel like I
need to step up to the plate

and make a sound
emotional decision.

Well, it’s the hardest decision
I've made in a very long time.

I didn’t really tell you guys
this, but my father-in-law

that I live with got diagnosed
with cancer right before I left.

[ Voice breaking ] I lost
my brother to cancer, so...

With that in mind, it’s
kind of always taught me

that you just can’t take
anything for granted,

and you have to be
there for your family.

I would never forgive myself if I
stayed and something happened.

Fernando: Yeah. You’re
doing the right thing.

- You’re doing the right thing.
- Absolutely.

You earned all our respect
for doing the 21 days.

Not too many people can do that.

Chance is my brother,

and I couldn’t have
done this without him.

Couldn’t have

Although it’s selfish of me,
it is frustrating that Melissa

is leaving, ’cause I
think that she’s fantastic.

She could kind of equalize
all of the completely

different personalities
to pull us through, I think.

I really feel like I
could have been

a valuable part of this team.

I would have been able to
provide them with my fishing

and my foraging skills,

just my hard work
and determination.

And I think I would have
been a great asset to the team,

so I felt really sad to,
like, leave them behind.

You have a family now.

You have me, and you
also have three new sisters

and two new brothers.

I wouldn’t replace
it for anything now.

Fernando: It was one day,

but you feel like there’s a
connection already with her.

Russell: Oh, yeah.

She was so vibrant.

And I think, you know,
we were in such a low point

when Matt had to leave

that them coming in
kind of recharged us.

And then, plus, we
got chance now, so...

It’s tougher mentally
than I thought,

and I was thinking
about it all last night.

This extraction
experience is brutal.

From day 1, she showed
me that I don’t need to be

that guarded and
distrusting to people.

And I'll always be grateful for
those lessons she taught me.

Melissa: I knew it was a hard
decision for him to make to stay there.

But I know that, when
chance finishes this,

he’s gonna come out
with this really close family,

the family that
he always wanted.

that palm... to practice.

Amber: Russell wants
to take this upon his own

to be like some sort of leader,

but we don’t need a
leader of our group.

We all have our skills.

We all bring
something to the table.

I mean, it’s sad that Matt left,

but you don’t have to take
that personally and think,

"I have to provide
everything now."

Matt gifted the group the bow,

but I'm the only one that’s
done any longbow hunting.

It’s just it’s gonna take
me a couple of pulls on it

to get the feel for
it, and it’ll be over.

of squirrels and rabbits.

If I can get my
eyes on it, I can hit it,

and that pig’s going down.

mind trip to think you’re done,

and then you’re only halfway.

Like, I don’t even
know if I could do that.

not having family,

it was kind of difficult
thinking about going home.

I’m going home to a
trailer that I have nothing in.

Yeah, it’s just been
tough, after the military,

not having family.

Well, you’ve got a
lot of family now, so...

This is... chance, this
is gonna be your family.

We love each other so much

that you’re not gonna
want to leave us.

Chance: If we see
pigs, one’s going down.

Six mouths to feed is a lot,

and I'm gonna make sure
everybody is taken care of.

very far in the jungle.

How fast can a pig run?

In probably a short
burst, 25 miles an hour.

And if there’s 50 of them and
they all come running at you,

your best bet is probably
to try to shimmy up

a tree as quick as possible.

And it’s a two-person raft.

Definitely a two-person raft.

The guys are gonna go
out and scout and hunt

and, probably, I imagine, come
back, you know, empty-handed,

but we need to get food.

So we’re gonna go fishing.

It’s super dangerous out here.

Giovanna: The water is our life.

It’s our drinking
water. It’s our food.

But there are a lot of
hidden dangers in there...

Large anacondas
swimming underwater,

caimans that are
currently watching me.

I think we almost have
to kind of put on blinders

and just charge in there.

Giovanna: It’s an
intense morning.

We’re hungry, and we’re tired.

People are starting to bicker.

I think everybody kind of
needs a little bit of space today.

So I'm putting the finishing
touches on my bird trap here.

So, it’s just got a really
simple pencil trigger here.

It’s like two sides
kind of similar,

and they rest like this.

And so, if there’s any pressure
on the cord, it’s gonna fall.

And that’s gonna
catch us dinner.

I hope it works.

I mean, it’s amazing how
we were going from eating

all the time to now...
Everybody was like,

"oh, I want to
throw the cast net.

I want to throw the cast net,"
to not eating in three days.

Chance: Last night,
there was a bit of turmoil,

and so to wake
up to more drama...

It was nerve-racking.

It’s always like,
"well, I... I..."

That’s just the way
you talk naturally.

She gets offended
by it, Russell.

Well, I get offended when
I show up from a long hunt

and everybody says, "oh,
by the way, the fish stuff

is ready for you to go
catch us some food."

Yes, there’s a lot
of "I" in what I say,

a lot of "me" in what I say.

But the thing is, it’s
a lot of me fishing,

and it’s a lot of me hunting,

so it’s a lot of me
talking about it.

How is it that every time
I go out, I bring back fish,

and every time everybody
