thankfully, my mom flew in to take care of the kids.

But with Julie recovering, I'm stuck here by myself taking care

>> Eric: Not only are you a great lawyer, you have history

with Holly. You also represented Nicole in

>> Eric: I know. But Belle thinks...it's good to

have the same counsel. You know, the continuity could

be beneficial. >> Justin: As someone who fought

for custody as a child myself, I feel for you, Eric, I really

do. But I'm not sure...this is a

good idea. >> Eric: Why not?

>> Justin: I gave the letter to Chloe that was sent from

Nicole's attorney in Nashville, so that already presents a

conflict of interest. >> Eric: You were just the

messenger. >> Justin: Yes, but it could be

argued that by delivering that letter, I was representing

Nicole's interests, which, according to what she wrote, was

for Chloe to raise her daughter. So you can see, um, it's already

bound to get messy. >> Eric: You know I could hire

some other lawyer who has no connection to this.

But I want you because you do have connection.

You also care about Holly. >> Justin: Very much.

But I also care about Maggie. And Maggie wants both of

Daniel's children to be raised together.

And I don't think you really wanna go against her wishes, do

you? >> Eric: But it's Nicole's

daughter, and I want to honor her wishes.

>> Justin: Okay. Um, look, I admire your dedication, but you

need to understand that if this case goes to court...the gloves

will come off. >> Eric: Meaning what?

>> Justin: Meaning Chloe's lawyers are gonna do whatever it

takes to prove that you are an unfit father.

Which includes bringing up things from your past which...

I'm the reason Holly's father's dead.

She's not gonna be making any surprise appearances this year.

>> Lani: It's a little annoying that every time I drop by, you

and Sheila are practically walking around naked.

>> Eli: Not every time. >> Lani: Seems that way.

>> Eli: Well, I do have good news on that front.

Now that Sheila's making a living, she'll be moving out

soon. In fact, she's at the TLC

concert in Brookville tonight. >> Lani: So she's not in the

bathroom singing into a hairdryer?

>> Eli: [laughs] Nope. It's just you...and me.

>> Lani: Mmm. [giggles]

You, um... you better go get dressed or we

will never make it to the benefit.

>> Eli: Okay, fine. But since you came to pick me

up, did you bring me a corsage? >> Lani: [laughs] Go get

>> JJ: I-I guess it would be a date, but as friends.

>> Haley: Got it. Okay. So where is this shindig?

>> JJ: It's at Doug's Place. It's just a benefit for the

Horton Center, and my mom and my cousin Julie put it together.

It's for a good cause. It could be fun or it could be

totally lame, I don't know. >> Haley: Thanks for the invite,

but I...I don't have cash for a ticket.

>> JJ: Well, you know what? It's a good thing, uh, I have

an extra. >> Haley: Did one of your

friends bail out on you again? >> JJ: It's actually my sister's

and she can't use it, so it's all yours.

Like--like I said, it's just two friends going out and having

a little fun on New Years. What do you say?

>> Sarah: Your brother is working with the ISA?

>> Adrienne: Ah, yes, to try to figure out who's responsible for

downloading those top-secret files.

>> Sarah: With his bionic eye. >> Adrienne: Yes, yes.

It's a big mess. And I get that Steve's trying to

help clean it up, but he should be doing it here in Salem with

his wife. >> Sarah: Was there a reason

that he's staying away? >> Adrienne: [chuckles]

Going it alone is kind of a Johnson family trait.

Instead of sticking around and trying to work things out with

your family, we tend to go off half-cocked and do things on our

own. >> Sarah: Yeah, but you're not

that way, right? >> Adrienne: Well...to some

degree, I am. But I'm not nearly as bad as

Steve. Or my brother Jack.

>> Sarah: Jack Deveraux. I remember him.

He was engaged to my sister Melissa before he met Jennifer.

>> Adrienne: Mm. Jack and Jennifer were perfect

together. I miss him every day.

I mean, we all do. I don't know.

Maybe that's why I'm so hard on Steve, you know?

He has the option to be able to come home.

Jack never will. >> Sarah: I'm sure that Steve

will take what you said to heart.

>> Adrienne: Oh. Yeah. Yeah, well, I certainly hope he

>> Jennifer: Sarah told you about me and Eric?

>> Henry: Well, she just started working at the hospital, and we

got to talking. She didn't get into details or

anything. But I am curious about what

happened. >> Jennifer: Uh, just Eric and

I, we weren't meant to be together.

I'm sure you remember Nicole Walker from the Center.

She was Eric's true love. And he went to find her, and it

ended tragically. >> Henry: Yeah, I heard Nicole

died. It's so sad.

>> Jennifer: It was heart-breaking, especially for

Eric. I mean, she really was the love

of his life. I know...how he feels.

Sometimes you feel like that pain is never gonna go away.

And on that joyful note, why don't we just go have a great

New Years? [both chuckle]

>> Henry: Let's do it. >> Jennifer: I'm so sorry.

>> Justin: I'm sorry to bring up the past, uh, on the anniversary

of the accident that killed Daniel.

But the reality is, these custody cases get ugly, Eric.

I mean, I represented Brady in his fight for Tate, and you know

how that turned out. >> Eric: But this is different.

I'm on the mother's side. >> Justin: Not according to

Nicole's letter. I mean, that document makes it

look like you're actually fighting what she wants.

>> Eric: No, no. Nicole only wrote that letter because she

thought we'd never be together again.

Justin, we found each other. We were going to be a family.

And then she thought she was gonna die--she asked me to take

care of Holly. Brady heard her say it.

>> Justin: All right. I'm not disputing that.

But regardless of how much you love Nicole and how much you

care about this little girl, the court almost always sides

with the family. >> Eric: Chloe's not family.

>> Justin: But Maggie is. She's Holly's grandmother and

next of kin. So challenging her is fruitless.

>> Eric: Are you saying you're not gonna help me?

>> Justin: [sighs] I'm saying that you need to

think long and hard about this. Look, I gotta go pick up

Adrienne...get her to the benefit.

>> Justin: You run the Center. >> Eric: Jennifer's got it.

[inhales, exhales] You know what, I'm really not--

I'm not even in the party mood. Besides, if I go, it's just

gonna remind me of Nicole. >> Justin: Maybe that's exactly

Wasn't right. I remember running into you

My name is Jennifer Horton, and I just want to thank each and

every one of you for being here tonight to support the Horton

Center. My cousin Julie is the

incredible woman who organized this beautiful event, and, um,

she asked me to speak on her behalf tonight, and I really

couldn't be more honored. My grandparents, Tom and Alice

Horton, for 25 years, they took families in need

into their home. And because of their kindness

and their generosity and their unwavering commitment to this

community, that is why the Horton Center is here.

And I really am so proud, so proud of them, so proud of our

community. I could go on and on about all

the services and the programs we offer, but I would like you to

meet someone who is on the front lines every single day.

And, um...he's a good man. He is the director of all of our

>> Eric: Thank you. Thank you all for being here

tonight on this special occasion.

I want to extend my gratitude to Jennifer and Julie who do

all the work that they do, to all of the auction items that

have been donated tonight, obviously.

But, um, what I would like to really talk about is

second chances. You know, not long ago, there

was a time that I was in a very dark place, and I felt hopeless.

A place where people would try to reach out to me, and I

rejected them. But Jennifer--she never gave up

on me. She said that she had a job for

me at the Center, an opportunity to help others

that, in turn, would only help me.

[laughs] Yes.

Well, it has in a great way. The work that I do has given me

a new outlook on life. And a similar thing happened to

a great woman named Nicole Walker.

Ms. Walter, she worked for the Center.

She said it helped her get out of her head...

step back and see things that were really important.

Nicole treated everyone with dignity and respect.

She brought light into their eyes and hope into their hearts.

As many of you know, Nicole recently passed.

Gone far too soon. But I want you to know her

spirit will forever remain at the Horton Center.

So your donations tonight will not only honor Nicole's memory,

but all the many others in need. Thank you.

>> Jennifer: Thank you, Eric, so much, and, um...I can't say it

enough what an asset Nicole was to the Center and...

she will be so missed.

It's almost like Nicole's spirit will be here tonight.

I saw your face during Eric's speech.

>> Brady: [sighs] I don't know if I'm ever going

to really be able to forgive myself for what I did to Nicole.

There's just no way to take it back.

I'd give anything just to have her walk through those doors

right now. >> Chloe: Stranger things have

happened. [muffled dinner music]

>> Jennifer: I hope I didn't go on too long up there.

>> Henry: No. You were terrific. >> Jennifer: It was a little

awkward with Eric. It is amazing how much changes

in a year. >> Henry: Earlier, when you said

you were ready to move on... did you really mean that?

So would you be open to dating? >> Adrienne: Ten!
