Naomi told me kimonos
actually originated in China

and came here
around 1,500 years ago.

The kimonos are super valuable.

It's actually hand-designed,
hand-dyed and hand-sewn.

'You don't rock these formal frocks
round to the shops.

'They're usually worn
for special occasions

'like weddings and tea ceremonies,'

'mainly rented for the day
as it's cheaper.'

It's a bit like our corsets.

as you can see, from my obi.

Mine is a regular Taiko,
it's the most simple one.

Yours is what's called a kawari obi.
It's actually very comfortable.

It is because it's like
wearing a corset. Yeah.

You know, it is tight
when you put it on,

but then you feel like
you've got support standing up.

That's right, yeah.
You look stunning.

It truly looks beautiful on you.

'I'm realising the kimono
is a bit like our stilettos,

'historical, loaded with tradition,

'and occasionally a bit tricky
to get about in.'

I'll teach you how to sit down.

So, when you sit down,
you just pull on your right. OK.

behind your knees.

Sort of fold it in,
and then you just get down.

and I've been told

with a ceremony

So, what happens in a tea ceremony?

Tea ceremony is...

The philosophy is based on Zen,
so that in Zen,

basically,
everything is about the focus.

And through the focus,

we kind of find peaceful
state of mind in our heart.

So that's why we just keep quiet.

The small sound you are hearing,
it's the music of the tea ceremony.

And since we get
this very quiet time,

we enjoy this music.

So all the sounds that she's making
is intentionally.

'Nowadays,
the tea ceremony is mainly held

'to celebrate special occasions.'

SOFTLY: That was warming the bowl,

which is also what we do,
supposedly, in Yorkshire.

You're supposed to heat the pot
before the tea goes in.

WHISPERS: Most people
just use a teabag now.

I've never seen
anything like this before.

And everything is choreographed,

and it is so relaxing.

This is Gion, the most famous
geisha district in Kyoto,

where the streets are lined
with Machiya,

traditional Japanese townhouses.

It truly is because they do start,

very young to train for the dance.

They have to do tea ceremonies,

they have to do ikebana,

are not necessarily from Kyoto,

so they have to learn
the Kyoto dialect as well.

was built in 1633

this entire wooden temple

'was built without a single nail.

is cos it's part of the school
curriculum to visit all the temples.

'Our school trips
were just to Wakefield baths,

'but kids are the same wherever.'

'And then,
out of all these tiny streets,

'rises the mighty
Fushimi Inari Shrine.

'My guidebook tells me
it was built in 1499,

'has over 10,000 famous red gates
or torii

'and it's believed foxes act
as messengers here.'

So, I'm here,
but I wanna go there and there

to see the torii gates.

'When I was younger,
I used to go and sit

'in Wakefield Cathedral
for the peace.

'This two-mile shrine path
has a similar feeling

'of being wrapped up in a wonderful,
spiritual calm.'

It is quite spectacular, isn't it?

'It goes on and on,
but it's really fantastic to see.'

'The colour of the gates
is very symbolic, as in Japan,

'red represents fire,
the sun and life.'

And also, the colour red
scares off the evil spirits.

So it's a good colour.

'Every single gate has been donated,

'and it's believed owning a torii
brings good fortune.

'Well, I may not own one,

'but I've still had
the very good fortune

'to visit this beautiful place.'
