Welcome to the section on drawing hair.

So we're gonna break this down in two different parts.

So the first part we're just gonna kind of talk about how it's really important to understand the direction

of hair and then we'll talk more about hair cells in the next lecture.

So let's go ahead and let's begin.

So first of all I want you want to understand is that all hair has a direction.

Now when you're drawing character designs it depends on how you're drawing them.

But it's a little bit different than drawing hair that looks photorealistic when you're drawing hair

that looks photorealistic.

You want it to look like there's a sheen to it and that there's highlights and reflection and stuff

like that and you don't necessarily want to draw individual hairs right.

But when it comes to drawing character designs a lot of the times especially for just using sort of

paper and pencil or just line art you actually do want to kind of draw those individual hairs so you

can kind of actually see the movement of the hair.

Right.

So that's what we're gonna be talking about in this lecture.

So let's go ahead and let's begin.

So the first thing you want to do is let's talk about just the direction of hairstyle so let's say for

example let's draw a male head to draw a circle like that and I'll just quickly sketch out kind of a

head

right.

So just something like that so that the middle of the head is right there.

So we're gonna do is let's go ahead and using some arrows I'll kind of indicate what direction the hair

is going and so he's going to kind of have some hair hanging down like this.

All right

make that a little bit better.

Something like that.

And then he's going to have hair kind of going back like this.

This

you can see with these arrows I'm just really kind of indicating that direction

right.

And so from that you can almost just kind of see what his hairstyle is just from those arrows.

Let's go ahead and let's switch color over so we can actually draw this hair.

So what I'm gonna do is going to start by kind of drawing in a hairline you'll learn in the next lecture

that hair lines are really important.

So draw that hairline in

right.

So there is a hairline next what we can do is we can just go ahead and draw out our hair so you can

get a better curve on that.

All right.

There we go.

So there's our character's hair now could be drawn a little bit better we're going to talk a little

bit more in a second about how to draw hair.

If you take your time it can look better but and sometimes you want to simplify things so this is a

little hair's going straight down.

I just kind of did that to show the direction of his hair.

But with this design I might actually just kind of simplify that and I might just kind of leave all

those lines out.

All right.

So you can see that those arrows gave us the direction of the hair.

So every hair needs a direction in hair kind of moves as a volume as a form.

So you'll learn the next one we'll talk more about shape and form when it comes to the hair but hair

is never really when you do your character designs you don't ever really want to do one hair going like

this one hair going like that another one go on like this you don't start drawing hairs all crazy like

that.

That's not going to look very good.

What you want to do instead is kind of draw your hair in form.

So sometimes it can just be kind of a lock of hair right.

Like that and that's all kind of drawn and it's own form but we're not just going in and drawing hair

that's just kind of doing this type of thing that doesn't look very good.

Another example of kind of drawing hair and a form would be let's say for example if we're drawing a

girl and she has a bun in her hair.

So go ahead Draw another circle here and kind of draw some girls head

hairline We'll be right about their

anyways.

And so for drawing her hair and kind of a bun first we start that hairline figure out where that's going

to be given year and the hair needs to kind of come off the head a little bit.

So the hair is never going to be the same exact size as the head unless their head is like buzzed.

Basically they can go ahead and sketch in her bonds which is going to be kind of a circle like that

and then we can go ahead and kind of sketch in the direction of the hair so the hair is going to kind

of go like this around her head

right.

Like that.

So let's go ahead.

And let's switch over to our other colors so we can draw her hair and see it a little bit better

and I can just kind of draw those strands of hair

kind of moving in that general direction you'll see that I added a little bit of s curved some of these

just to make it look a little bit more interesting but in general they're just kind of moving in the

same direction because it's one big form.

Same with this bun back here it's all moving in one direction for the form

right.

You're on to kind of draw the edges of the hairline.

All right.

So there's another example of directional hair and this is a really important concept.

Now the next concept is gonna be about drawing shape and form for the hair and that's actually probably

the most important part.

But if you go in there to draw your actual hair and you do understand that hair is going to have this

direction it's not going to look very good.

Let's have a look at one more example so let's do it.

Girl

this and the same.

I'll just go right in the sketch and it will kind of see how I start figuring out what the direction

is going to be.

So I shot some hair hanging down in front of her face.

Can I make an S curve like that

so you can see right here we can have this big form going on right there and the direction of it is

gonna kind of morph as you go across.

So first it kind of starts out like this right and it becomes a little bit more of this S curve over

here

and it's all kind of moving in the same direction.

Now you could split this up into different locks of hair so I could have some other hair coming out

from behind here or something like that then over here on this other side I could go ahead and sketch

some more hair like that

but the point I'm really trying to drive home is that you need to really pay attention to the direction

of your hair and drawn hair can be kind of complicated especially if you haven't looked at hair very

much so I highly recommend that when you draw character.

I would just look for some photo reference of that character's hair style or what you want their hair

to look like and use as reference you kind of can observe what the direction of the hair is.

And also the shape and the form so really quick before we end this lecture.

Let's go ahead and I want to kind of show you how to draw a kind of two forms of hair when it comes

to drawing a long hair.

So I kind of move this all out of the way and let me go ahead and delete this drawing right here because

you're about to basically draw that but a little bit better all right.

So the first one is going to be the twist.

So hair can when it comes to long hair or even sometimes shorter long hair the hair can twist.

And so what this looks like is if we go ahead we just kind of sketch this out just kind of sketch out

the shape of my lack of hair like that and what's going to happen is that we can start by kind of just

sketching in a few lines in here just to give the general direction of the hair and then we can fill

the lines in between

right.

So you see how that is basically a twist.

Usually it's going to be a little bit larger at the top and it's gonna twist out to a more larger twist

at the end

and in some of these areas where it gets a little bit more pinched up into a corner where you can do

as you can kind of add more hairs in there it's just kind of darken it.

All right great.

So there's one the other type is kind of an overhang type of hair.

So this is gonna be where you basically have some hair coming down so maybe this is coming off the side

of the head or maybe it's coming off the front of the fore head or something like that but it kind of

has an overhang to it.

So if we draw it like that then we can go ahead that will be that kind of the top flap if you think

of it kind of like a flat piece of fabric or something like that.

It's kind of like a flap and then as it twists underneath it kind of comes out like this.

We can see how we kind of get this overhang going over here.

Right.

So what's going to happen is it's going to kind of bunch up on this edge right here until you get to

that corner and we'll all kind of pension to their and then right here it's going to just kind of come

out like this

oops that was a bad one

I'm having a hard time that curve right there.

All right.

And underneath here if we wanted to we can kind of shape that in a little bit more.

We can see how that makes basically an overhang.

Let's go ahead and grab a brush that I can shade with just to kind of give this a little bit more form

and definition

right.

There we go.

So that's kind of a rough idea of what those two different types of locks of hair like.

So you have the twist and you have the overhang and generally that's basically what you're gonna be

using most of the time when you're drawing long hair.

All right.

That brings us to the end of this lecture.

So what I really want you to remember is just remember that all hair has a direction and it's really

important to pay attention to what direction the hair is moving in and where it's moving that direction

on what part of the head.

A good way to understand this and to make sure that you're drawing it correctly is just find some reference

photo of a hair cell that looks really close or exactly how you want your character's hair to look and

just basically copy it.

You can convert into your character's style but just look at the direction of the hair and the shape

of the hair and copy that.

You may have exaggerated a little bit but all the information will be right there in that reference

photo.

So you have to reinvent the wheel you don't have to figure it out and think of it in your head just

look at reference.
