In this lecture we're gonna be learning about how to draw the human head from different angles and in

different poses.

So let's go ahead and get started.

So if you remember in the last lecture we learned how to draw the Loomis head from the front and the

side view.

But what if we want to draw that in three quarters.

So the head is kind of angled somewhere between the front view and the side view.

Well what we need to do is we need to start by drawing the side playing.

So when we draw the head from the side we draw a circle to represent that piece that gets sliced off

of our sphere.

But when we're looking at it in three quarters of you what it's going to look like is it's actually

going to look kind of like an oval

right about that size

right.

Then what we want to do is we want to find the center of the face.

So that's the side plain of our head.

So let's go ahead and let's figure out where the side of our face is going to be.

So.

Or the middle of our face.

Sorry.

So we can draw a line kind of curving around from the top surface coming down like this

just like that.

Now what we want to do is we want to work out the hair lines will draw a line from the top of the circle

just moving across like this.

We'll draw a line from an across the bottom of the circle like that.

And that will mark our nose and our hairline then we want to divide this in half.

That'll give us our eyebrow line and then can go ahead and take the same distance right here in market

down here.

So we just can eyeball that if we want.

Next let's go ahead and let's draw a plus sign on this surface right here just to kind of give it some

more definition.

And these markings will help us figure out where that year is going to go so going to connect from there

to there or basically recreating that square we drew on the front view.

Now we can do this line come straight across here.

So now we know where the center of that plane is.

And we can basis we can base that year off of this now.

So I can go ahead and draw that year in right here in that bottom three quarters that I'm going to go

ahead and I'm going to draw in the jaw.

So I'm just going to kind of come over with a straight line like this and then I'll just connect it

right up and to where that ear is just like that then I'll continue the bottom of the Chin across like

that and then I can kind of draw a slightly curved and angle line like that.

Let me get the back of the skull here and then you go ahead and draw the neck coming off of that.

So maybe I'll bring that back just a little bit more maybe be right about there.

It's just kind of draw a curved line like that drawing line coming off straight like this and then remember

somewhere about in the middle of this jaw line is where you want that neck to start

just kind of make that look like a cylinder

and then we can do the cheekbones.

So if you remember the cheekbones are going to start around the edge of the chin and they curve up like

this.

And then they curve back in the opposite direction up to this middle point of the cranium area just

like that then we can go to the other side so the other side of the Chin let's say it starts right about

there.

Something like that.

All right great.

So what if we want this person to be looking up.

Well when we start drawing it it's going to actually look exactly the same.

And you'll see what I mean here in a second.

So we want to start by slicing off that flat plain right there which is basically the cranium.

So we're going to go ahead and redraw the oval and again when you're looking at this in three quarters

view from the three quarters view it'll look like an oval from the side view it'll look like a circle.

And from the front view it's just going to look like a flat plain cut off of your your circle right.

Ahead and sketch that in

great.

Then we can go ahead and mark out the hairline so hairline will go there the nose line will go there

and then we can divide that in half.

Sorry.

We're actually we're drawing this looking upward so we want to make sure that we angle all of this upwards

and the way we do this is basically what we need to do is we need to angle this line right here that

comes across there.

We need to decide what the angle of the head will be and that's going to we're going to base it off

of that line.

So if we were to angle it up like this for example then that head would be looking really far up.

In this case we're going to angle it to about a 45 degree angle like that and then we can go ahead

draw this line in here just like that.

Then this line is going to curve around the front surface that that's our eyebrow line right there.

All right then our hairline is going to curve around as well.

And as you can see since it has to curve around up here we get a shorter hairline.

Let's go ahead and do the nose line so the nose line doesn't come off the bottom right.

There is something to draw it off like that if you can imagine that there was kind of a square around

this flat circular plane.

We want the eyebrow line to start there the hairline to start there and the nose line start on that

line right there because the front of the face is kind of a flat surface.

There's parts of it that protrude off such as the nose.

But for the most part in general when you simplify it just kind of a flat surface.

So there's a little bit of a curve to it but it's just basically flat just like that.

All right.

Great so because this is angled backwards you'll notice that the distance from the eyes the nose and

the eyes to the hairline it's a little bit squashed and that's exactly what we want.

We want to take the same distance and we want to bring it down here.

So going up and down like this we don't want to measure it across like that.

We want to make sure that we're measuring up and down like that.

We want to take that same distance and bring it down here and that's going to be the bottom of our chin.

So this face is going to look a lot more squashed and that's what happens when somebody looks up or

looks down is their face tends to become a little bit more squashed.

So now we can go ahead drawn our jaw line now since we're seeing the bottom side of our jaw we're gonna

see a little bit of a different sort of look.

So if I draw the draw line kind of coming down like this and then it's going to angle back up to right

there where the ear will begin then we can draw the side of the face that and then we get kind of a

curve right there so you can see that when they look up you're gonna see the bottom of their jaw

and kind of do a curve shape like that since we have the round sort of cylinder form of the neck.

All right let's go and shape this in just so we can kind of see that definition a little bit more.

So that's the underside of our jaw.

We can also go ahead and sketch out the center of the face the center of the face we'll be right about

here you'll also notice that the distance between there to there from the middle of the face of that

side of the face in the middle of the face of that side is a little bit shorter and that's because as

the face wraps around we can't see what's on that side of the head.

So this side gets squashed a little bit

that we can go ahead and sketch in that year

then as the head comes around and it'll go right into the neck.

So we'll go ahead and

draw and neck in

and then as you can see the eyebrow line right there is higher than the ear and you might remember I

told you that the eyebrow should never be higher than the ear.

That's basically what we're talking about.

Looking at it straight on if we're looking at it from the side or when you're drawing it like this you

still want to follow all these guidelines so that year will actually appear to be lower than the eyes

on the actual head there actually at the same level.

But just because of the angle we're looking at it the ears are lower than the actual eyebrows.

So there are instances where you want the ear to be either lower or higher than the eyebrows depending

on whether they're looking up or down.

All right.

Great.

Let's have a look at a few more examples.

So for our next example we're going to have a look at someone that is facing forward but it's looking

up.

So let's go ahead and let's get started.

Straight ahead my circle drawn here what I'm gonna do is I'm to go ahead and slice off the edges of

my circle like that.

And then I can go ahead and draw in the lines from my nose and my hairline maybe I'll slice it in a

little bit more so it makes more of a square then I can go ahead and divide that in half and then do

a center line right down the center of the face then I want to take this same distance here and actually

because this person is looking upwards just like on this drawing right here the face gets a little bit

more squashed.

So let's go ahead and let's take that into account.

So we want to make sure that all of these lines become more squashed

so we're no longer when we're looking at it with somebody looking upwards we're no longer going to base

the nose line off the bottom side of these sliced off pieces.

Instead we're going to base it off of just our general knowledge of how the face gets squashed.

So what we'll do is we're gonna go ahead.

We're going to bring the hairline up a little bit higher.

We're gonna go ahead and bring the eye brow line up a little bit higher like that and then we want to

take the same distance copy it down for the nose so our nose will be clear up there and then the chin

will take the same distance so once we have a good idea of what we want it to be like then we can go

and take that same distance and apply it all the way across.

But the idea I'm trying to stress is that the whole face the distance between each part of the face

becomes more squashed as somebody begins to look up or begins to look down.

All right.

So we're gonna base it off of that right there.

So those are chin or nose or eyebrow line and our hairline.

All right great.

So next let's go ahead and we can start sketching in the jaw line.

So when somebody when reviewing somebody like this just like with this drawing here we see the underside

of the chin.

So let's go ahead and draw that and so the chin kind of protrudes out and then it's going to go back

in a little bit like that and then it kind of swoops back up into the side of the head.

And in general that's what a jaw is going to look like when you're viewing it from the underside

then we can go ahead and add our ears.

And since this person is looking upwards if we're looking at him from the side the side cranium right

there it would be angled up like this and this would be their eyebrow line right there draw that a little

bit darker so you can see it.

And so the eyebrow line is angling up like that.

So when we see the eyebrows are gonna be clear up here and we're gonna draw your back here.

But as you can see if you're viewing I'm looking forward like this the ear top of the ear is right there

and the eyebrows are right about there.

So the eyebrows are much higher because they're looking upwards.

So we need to make sure that when we draw these ears they're below the eyebrow line.

So in this case it's probably actually going to be a little like about where the nose line is.

So we can go ahead and sketch those ears in

just like that

that we can go ahead and do the bottom side of the jaw.

So it's going to kind of angled down like this

then we'll kind of get that around sort of line because the neck is a cylinder.

Go ahead and draw the neck in

go ahead and darken all this in kind of round out those corners a little bit more

and I'll go ahead and a shade in the underside of his chin.

Perfect and there you go.

So you could imagine that the nose would be right here we'd see more of the underside of the nose we

kind of see a little bit more of a shadow shape like that and the eye sockets would be somewhere right

about here we can see that because he's looking upwards we're able to see the bottom side of this jaw

the bottom side of the nose the bottom side of the eye sockets and not only DAB all the features become

squished when somebody looks up or looks down.

All right next.

Let's go ahead and let's draw somebody looking downwards from a side view.

So we go ahead and start by drawing in

my side cranium that flat plain that we slice off that and then I'll go ahead and I'm just going to

kind of sketch this circle to come out a little bit further because if you remember the side view of

the skull is kind of more like an oval.

So I'm just going to extend that out a little bit.

You can even go ahead in your race.

This just so we can see a little bit better.

All right great.

So this person is going to be looking downwards.

So we always want to start by establishing what the angle is that they're looking at.

So the way we do that is by this line right here so we can Engelhardt downwards a little bit and I'll

angle it down about that much right there and then I'll go ahead and do this cross line right there.

And that is sad blushes in what direction what they're looking up or down and we can base everything

off of that.

So since we're seeing this inside view it's very simple so we can just draw straight line coming across

like that.

We don't see any curvature because it's just a straight on side view and then we can.

From the top up here draw in our hairline coming across drawn or nose line coming across and we should

actually probably bring this up just a little bit because those aren't very evenly spaced so about there

looks good.

And then I can just draw a line coming off like this and then I want it to kind of move in the same

direction as that line right there because that will establish sort of the angle of the front plate

on my face.

So this is the center line of the face which I've seen it from the side.

It's going to come down like that next.

Let's go ahead and take the distance from here to here.

We're gonna apply that to down here so right about there.

That'll be the bottom of our chin

and go ahead and bring that back like this.

And then right up into where our ear will be

right.

So so far there's not that big of a difference it's almost like we just took the the side view of the

head that we drew before and we just angled it down.

We're not having to change a lot of perspective or anything like that.

The where it really changes is kind of the neck position but we haven't really talked about the neck

yet so we can just go ahead and kind of draw that neck in

so it's going to come off the back of the head like that.

And then about in the middle of the jaw is where the other part will be

and so that really tells you that somebody is looking down because rather than having that straight

line coming out like that from the neck they're looking more downwards

we can go ahead and sketch that you're in.

So go ahead and draw in something like this.

All right great.

So there we are.

So we just do drew four different heads.

And these are not all the different positions and poses there's a few more.

So what I've done is I've created an assignment for this lecture and I wanted to go through and complete

it.

Now this is gonna be a little bit challenging for you probably but that's okay.

It's supposed to be I want you to really start thinking and I want you to really start understanding

how the head works.

So what am I have you do is going to have you download the resources these two photographs and download

them.

You don't have to print them off you can just view them on your computer or you can just look at the

screen right here if you want whatever you want but you're going to use these as reference.

And what I want you to do is I want you to try to use these as reference to redraw them as Loomis heads

like we've done here but draw them in these positions and from these angles.

So these are two that we haven't done yet from the side view looking up and the three quarters you looking

down.

So once you've done that go ahead and take all your Loomis heads that you've drawn with me in this lecture

and these ones.
