All right so what I want to do now is I want to give you an assignment that kind of sums up everything

we learned in this section about drawing and applies it to this assignment.

So I'm going to walk through this assignment with you for this image right here.

But after I do that then I'm gonna give you another image and you're gonna go ahead and do the assignment

on your own.

So what we want to do is we want to take what we applied which is line.

Shape form and also just kind of like adjusting I guess you could say art studies adjusting arts studies

to look a little bit more characterize and just changing things so that we have more contrast in there.

So let me show you what I mean.

Right here we have this image of this man with a beard and a fedora and his cool glasses and stuff.

And what we want to do is we want to start by breaking him down into his simple shapes and lines so

that's gonna be the first step in our project.

So if you're working digitally you want to make sure you do this on another layer.

And if you are not then you can go ahead and just do this on paper and pencil.

There's there's not going to be any difference.

So I'm going to start just by drawing his head.

So just a circle like that right.

And then I can go hand drawers beard which is just kind of a rectangle shape like this

then I get a shoulders like that

and his Upper Chester is kind of one big rectangle that is lower area is one big rectangle as well

then we get this like right here

that leg right there and then for his arms it just kind of get a C. We get kind of a rectangle just

coming off the shoulder right here just like that.

And another one over here

like that

and then we get kind of a tapered trapezoid coming down like this.

And then over here we get kind of a triangle shape actually because we get three edges just kind of

like that

right.

So there we go.

So just broken down to a simple shapes and we can get us fedora as well so kind of just do a an ellipse

shape like that and then up here we get kind of just a rectangular shape.

So this is very very simple we broke it down into super simple shapes that don't match up exactly with

what he is.

We broken down into those simple shapes all right.

So there we go next what we want to do is if we wanted to kind of turn some of these more into form

so for example has legs down here instead of making them rectangles we could kind of add a curve to

it like that and make them cylinders.

So now we're applying we have our shape and our line in there and now we're applying what we know about

form so we know that the legs for example are kind of like cylinders when you break them down into their

simple forms you can also turn his forearm into more of a cylinder shape.

You can also do the circles in here for his glasses.

Some like that.

All right great.

So there is simple shapes now that we understand what his simple shapes are what we want to do is we

want to take these simple shapes and we want to apply what we talked about when we take art studies

or art reference and we kind of stylized those and change things about them.

So what we can do is we can go ahead and start redrawing this.

So the first thing I want to do is I want to pay attention to the big large shapes in this character

right here.

So I want to create some contrast.

We talked about how their shape contrasts so we can have a big shape a small shape than a big shape

and we can also do a round shape and then a square shape and then at round shape.

So what I can do is let's go ahead and let's start by first.

I'm going to give them maybe a smaller head.

Let's just give them a slightly smaller head something to do a small circle like that.

And then let's make his beard a little bit bigger.

I'm also going to make it protrude out a little bit more so it's not so rectangular.

It's a little bit more like a trapezoid or triangle type shape just like that.

Maybe I'll curve the bottom of that line a little bit.

Right now let's go ahead and give him his glasses

something like that great.

And then for his body we'll go ahead and go back to a rectangle shape.

Well let's make his body a lot bigger

so just kind of do a trapezoid shape like this.

So as you can see we're still kind of using the same idea here.

We're just changing things so made his head smaller.

We kind of just made his beard shape look a little bit more dynamic.

We made his shoulders look a little bit more dynamic and we're also playing with the size.

We get that contrast in that we get a tiny head with really broad shoulders and maybe his waist is a

little bit smaller so we can kind of just do a rectangle like this.

All right.

And then force arms maybe you want to give him really big arms I mean we want to make these really rounds

or make these kind of stretched out sphere type shapes that's kind of coming out the page but that's

all right.

I'll go ahead and extend my page out just a little bit more

right.

So we've got these big muscles like that now we get his forearms in here so go ahead and draw that and

we'll do kind of a triangle shape like we got before right there

whose leg kind of turned into a cylinder

something like that.

Maybe we could change this up a little bit.

Look kind of funny.

Let's go ahead and give him his fedora and in this case again we want to treat that contrast and there's

a one way we can do that is with his with a shape so if we wanted to we could kind of make it a little

bit more of a pointy shape like that you know and give him his fedora top or something like that or

if we wanted to we could do what we just did but we could just make it round.

But the other thing I want you to pay attention to is how it's big.

I'm making it bigger than it is an actual photo

so that where we create that contrast between his hat and his head set as a small head and he has a

big hat.

And it creates a nice contrast going to sketch in kind of the shape of the fedora

corps.

I'm going to go ahead and race out these legs.

I think they look kind of bad.

Just go and delete them.

All right.

So there we go.

So now we haven't kind of roughed out and his shapes and his lines and kind of his forms can kind of

go in there and add some construction lines just to create that form a little bit better

maybe we can extend his beard down a little bit.

Maybe we can even make it a little bit pointer like that.

All right then we can go ahead and race out this shape down here.

Perfect.

Okay so now we have some of those basic shapes just kind of make as way go out in that direction right

there.

Make them kind of big and round

right cool.

So now we have our basic shapes and you can see that this could be the beginning of a character.

So if we want you for example if you had an n new layer let's switch a color to black.

So this would be representing a darker pencil for example.

We're just pushing harder with your pencil.

We can go in there and start detailing things out so we can give him his glasses make it look like make

it look like there's a shine and those glasses by adding a streak of white across them.

Go ahead and give him the shape of those glasses and again this is just a really rough sketch show.

This would probably not be your final drawing.

This is just helping you get somewhere to design a character.

Give him his nose

right.

We could probably actually make that mustache a little bit bigger.

So trying to exaggerate things but that works for now and give him a bottom lip little line there for

his mouth crease

we'll get him some kind of big ears and maybe not maybe some long years.

All right.

And then we can kind of sketch in that beard a little bit

right.

But there is a beginning of a character we just base it off of this guy right here.

You're not going to necessarily have to look at a photograph of a person to design a character and base

it off that person.

This is just an exercise to get you thinking one in line shape and form and then also to start getting

you to practice exaggerating those lines and shapes and form and changing things about them so that

that way that's just going to start getting you in the mindset of designing characters.

So what I want you to do now is I have a photo in the resources of this lecture and I want you to download

it.

It's of an old woman and I want you to do the same thing I want you to first break her down into her

actual simple lines and shapes and try to match her proportions and everything as best as possible.

It would probably really help if you dream side by side so you can kind of line things up a little bit

and then what I want you to do is a way to do what we did here and just change some of those lines and

shapes and forms and exaggerate them create some shape contrast in there and stuff like that and see

what you can come up with.

Now this might be a little bit challenging for you but that's okay.

It's more about you understanding the concept.

We're going to learn more throughout this course about how we can create better character designs and

make better decisions about the contrasts and the shapes and the lines and our character designs.

But for now I just wanted to give this a shot.
