All right.

Let's go ahead and let's just dive right into this course and get drawing.

I always like to start my courses off with a project that's kind of simple but a little complicated

so that we can test out your skills and the main purpose of this is once you can get your feet wet a

little bit because I hate courses that just start off really boring and drab.

I like to just dive right in with you so you can start drawing right away.

The other reason for this project is so that you can draw right now and follow along with me.

And then at the end of the course what I want you to do is come back to this project and I want you

to redraw it and follow along again and then post it to the Q and A section of the course.

And I want you to compare the two so you can see the progress that you've made throughout the course.

You'll be able to see what your drawings look like before the course and what they look like after the

course.

So let's go ahead and get started.

So first I just want to talk a little bit about the basics of character design and just drawing in general

the thing to understand is that drawing is actually pretty simple when you boil it down drawing is for

the most part it's just lines and those lines are used to create shapes and form and that's really all

there is to it.

Now there's obviously more details that you add on top of that but I just want to show you like everything

is broken down into lines and shape so you can see here for example if I go ahead I can draw a kind

of a diamond shape like this.

You put that a little bit darker so you can see it have a diamond shaped like that and then I can go

ahead and just add a neck to that era.

Here

got a nose like that

we add some hair out there who knows what it looks like.

I haven't designed this character out so looks kind of bad but you can see that

that starts to turn into a character

right.

And it's just a simple matter of drawing lines and shapes.

And this goes for basically every type of character design everything from the form of somebody like

this

you know to somebody more like this

and then from those shapes and lines you just build up more detail at an eyes and stuff like that.

But the thing I want you to mostly understand about character design is character design always starts

off really really rough.

You're never gonna go straight in and just start drawing your character perfect.

You're gonna always start off with really rough drawings so don't be afraid or be embarrassed or anything

like that.

If your drawings look really rough or they don't even look that good because your first drawings of

your characters aren't going to look that good even for the best and most professional character designers

in the world their character designs always start off as really rough sketches and gesture drawings

and they slowly work it until it becomes the final finished product that you actually get to see as

the consumer.

So just remember that's always going to start off rough and not only that but there are going to be

a lot of bad drawings.

So even throughout this course you'll see that I produce a lot of bad drawings of character designs

and you have to draw those you have to get through all the bad designs so you can get to the good ones.

Now that might not make that much sense to you yet but you'll understand the further into the course

you get.

Just don't be too hard on yourself is what I'm saying.

Basically you can see that this guy right there.

That's pretty bad drawing.

So that's what I mean.

There's gonna be a lot of bad character designs but you have to whittle those down to the good ones.

So let's go ahead and let's get started on a project we're gonna be drawing two characters.

I just want to demonstrate to you how simple drawing characters can be.

So let's go ahead and start by just drawing a shape.

Both characters are just gonna start off with simple circles.

I usually like to start my characters off that way but these characters are going to kind of be in two

different styles and they're going to kind of use two different forms of design.

Now these are gonna be animation styled characters and so some of you may come here wanting to learn

how to draw manga or wanting to learn how to draw realistic character designs and don't work we're gonna

cover all that in this course.

We're just starting out with more animation style stuff because that's a very simple style of drawing.

So we always want to start off of the circle.

Now you'll notice I'm using a blue pencil you don't have to you can just use a normal pencil just don't

push as hard when you do this rough in drawing.

So when you're drawing your first drawing for your character this is called a rough or a block in or

you can call it the guidelines or the guiding drawing whatever you want to call it.

We're gonna call it a rough for now.

So this is our rough is what's going to guide us when we do our actual final drawing.

So from here what we want to do is we want to find the center of the face.

So my character is going to kind of be looking off to this side over here.

So I need to draw a line that curves around the sphere and comes down like this.

And that kind of tells me that they're looking downwards because that line is kind of angled back like

that and this curves around so it tells me that the form is round then we want to go ahead and find

our eyeline.

Now your eyeline might sometimes line up with your eyebrows or the bottom of your eyes at the top of

your eyes or the middle of your eyes.

It just depends on how you want to do it.

But in this case this is going to represent the bottom of our eyes.

So it's down towards the bottom of our sphere and you'll notice that it curves as well because we want

this to be a rounded head.

Next we want to go ahead and we want to kind of rough out the jaw.

So I'm just going to kind of come down there

like that just kind of draw that jaw shape and really lightly.

Now this might be a little bit harder for you to see and I'm sorry about that you just want to make

sure that you're drawing lightly because when you come back in and you draw darker then that's what

you want to show through it.

You don't want your under drawn to show through that much.

All right.

Next what we can do is we can go ahead and Abbott knows I'm an addict basically right here where this

middle line crosses over the bottom of our sphere and I'll put it out a little bit more towards that

side because even though it's on the center of the face on the center line the nose protrudes out a

little bit.

So it needs to come out a little bit more then it can go ahead and draw a line like that.

Go ahead sharpen my pencil just so that I've got a nice shirt point

then what we're going to do is we're just going to draw a line coming up like this next what I like

to do is I'd like to start blocking in the eyes.

So for the eyes I usually start by kind of just drawing bold shapes for about where I want the eyes

to be

and this is just to help me block it out and understand the size of my eyes as well as the placement.

So we want to make sure that there's about an eye width apart between the eyes.

And so that's why I'm blogging about circles first and then I'll come back and shape those out a little

bit more and then I'll go ahead and all kind of block out where I want the eyebrows to be just get by

kind of doing a shape like that

and then from there I can go and just start drawing those eyebrows and make this eyebrow raised a little

bit and then this one let's kind of keep it a little straight.

So just have it come straight across like that

perfect.

Then we can start to draw the outline of the head so we'll start with a four head

and then we want to kind of angle back inwards towards this.

Right here

in the why the cheek come out a little bit and then we'll just kind of swoop that back and down into

the chin

then we go ahead draw that Shannon draw the jaw and so we want kind of a nice round jaw.

We don't want it to be too square or anything like that.

And we can kind of block that air and just by doing sort of a wheel like that will come back in detail

that in a minute.

Next let's go ahead and add the mouth.

So for the mouth want to come down to right about there it's gonna be somewhere down the middle between

this nose and the chin.

So somewhere in here I sometimes like to kind of just shape that in a little bit.

Just I have a decent idea of where that is.

And then from there start building my character so for the lips because we're looking at her at this

angle we're just kind of want shape just kind of like that right in the center of the face then we can

bring this line down like that that one down as well.

And then we're gonna have that peak up like this or have the other side sort of peek up as well because

she's gonna be smiling a little bit and let's give her kind of an open mouth smile.

So once we have her top lip drawn in.

Well we want to do as you want to draw her teeth in.

Which is just gonna basically be a white shape like that

we're gonna go ahead and draw and the open part of the mouth just be open like that and give her a tongue

fill in the dark part of her mouth and we can shade in the tongue part a little bit darker as well.

Let's go ahead and add the lips

and we can start detailing that nose out as well.

So going to give her a natural hole like this give her the edge of her nose and we'll do this bottom

part of the front of her nose or this part going back.

Great.

Let's go ahead and start detailing her eyes and as well so for her eyes.

Want to go ahead and give her some eyelids so drum just curving around like this.

And then it's going to kind of go flat right here it'll curve down just a little bit but not too much.

So just something like that.

And that gives us kind of the curved round shape of the eye because the eye is actually a sphere just

like her head.

It's a sphere.

So we want to make sure that we show that in our drawing I don't want these eyes too far apart so to

make sure we can keep you sort of close.

All right.

So those are top eyelid slash eyelashes.

Then let's go ahead do the bottom.

So we want the bottom to kind of line up

right there on that bottom eyeline.

Let's go ahead and add in our irises.

We're just gonna do circles about that size once we get over here to this one because we're kind of

seen it from another angle.

This Iris needs to be kind of more like an oval and that one needs to be more like a circle.

Perfect.

Let's see.

I'm going to go ahead and adjust his eyebrows a little bit more

human adjusted for head a little bit too I want it to be protruding out just a tiny bit more.

So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go ahead and take a razor.

And when I reset that for head I know it's still there a little bit and that's okay because we're gonna

come back and draw this in with a darker pencil.

So just go ahead make that forehand stick out just a little bit more.

I think I want the bottom of our eye to be a little bit further down as well.

So getting your race set out a little bit just bring it a little bit more down

Gordon shade that in shade the eyebrows in as well

I think I want to round out her cheekbone just a little bit more.

So it's a little bit more of a full cheek.

All right.

Great next.

Let's go ahead and let's detail her Iran.

Sumi Go ahead just add along like that it's just a diagonal line like that another one in the opposite

direction and then a straight up line and then at the top I'll just kind of round that you're off and

then let's just keep the year simple so just kind of do a point like that.

An arrow point and just come around like this.

All right.

Next we have the back of the head and the back of the head just kind of rolls right into the back of

the neck.

So this linking just kind of fallen back through there.

I'm just going to kind of do a diagonal line like that.

Then we want to keep her neck kind of thin.

We don't want it too thick so I'll put the other side of her neck right about there.

Sometimes you want to mark lightly to figure out where you're next going to go before you commit to

it and darken that line because if you make it too thick probably won't look right.

Give her some shoulders like that

perfect and then really quick.

Let's go ahead and let's just mark right about there just a little bit further down from the top of

the head and we're going to start sketching in her hair.

So what I want to do is I want to first sketch out the basic shape of her hair because like I said everything

just starts out with basic basic shapes and forms.

So for her hair I want her hair to kind of follow something like this here actually gonna end up going

out the page a little bit but that's all right

so I know that looks pretty crazy.

But that's the basic shape I want it to her hair to follow.

But now we're going to go ahead and we're gonna draw the that actual hair in and we're gonna kind of

make it look a little bit more organic.

I want it to look like maybe she's like a ghostly type character and her hair is kind of floating or

maybe she's underwater or maybe this is even someone like Marilyn Monroe and her hair is being blown

up or something like that from the wind.

Who knows.

But for now I'm just gonna draw it like this because I think it looks kind of interesting as you can

see we're getting a lot of those curves that we practice drawing before we get to the curve like that

S curve.

Another S curve.

They're just smaller and bigger and they are shorter and longer and have more squish or less squash

and remember that this is our under drawing so nothing about this has to be perfect.

We can always when we come back and finalize it with our darker pencil we can always move things around

a little bit and really just adjust our drawing.

That's the purpose of doing this rough is that it allows you to really sketch it out put the placement

of things but you don't really have to commit to anything until you go back in there with that dark

pencil and draw it in.

As the final

we go ahead and give her sideburns so just kind of a little hair like that little lock of hair come

up like this and from here we want the hair to swoop up and then back down

I'm not gonna go to see a lot of detail on that edge of the hair just because it's going off.

All right great.

Then we can go ahead.

Just kind of had a line like that.

Give her a collarbone

or do a circle there just to indicate her shoulder

and give her kind of a

strapless dress like that

won't get too much into that drawing heads kind of it can be the easiest part of drawing a character

so we're just going to stick to heads for now.

We're gonna get way more into drawing bodies later but I just want to keep this kind of simple for you

for now.

All right.

Next let's go ahead and let's work on our other character.

So this character is going to be a little bit different.

So rather than this character over here who kind of follows human proportions.

There are some things like her eyes are obviously bigger than a real humans but the actual proportions

and placement of the eyes are pretty accurate.

But with this guy what we want to do is one we're gonna give him a very intense and dramatic shape so

coming off the top of his head or a skull.

Go ahead give it a shape like this

which will then go down into a shoulders so as you can see this guy doesn't have a very thick neck.

This guy might be something more in the style of something like a 3D animated film or something like

that where the characters don't necessarily necessarily look Disney asked but they look a little bit

more exaggerated.

So things we can do to exaggerate that is we can change things like that eye line.

So with her eyeliner was down her the bottom of the circle.

In this case let's go ahead.

Let's put his eyeliner right up here in the middle of the circle.

But another thing is that his chin is gonna be way down here.

And so that's really gonna change the proportions of our character.

So let's go ahead and let's mark out the center of his face

now in a draw circle right there for his nose.

So just kind of touching the bottom of this circle and then let's go ahead.

Let's mark out his year somewhere to put his ear out here on the edge of his head the top that is just

going to be at this line right here for the eyes.

And then we can go ahead and kind of mark out his lip slips can be somewhere right there bottom of his

lip.

You can have a big bottom lip then his chin is basically going to be somewhere down here.

I don't know where exactly.

Something like that kind of darken these lines and so you can see them just a little bit better.

All right.

Perfect.

Then let's go ahead

draw those eyebrows in like that

going to draw the fore head in like that.

So just keeping it very angular and draw a cheekbone and just a little bit curved and then kind of come

back out and for the year let's go ahead give him kind of an angular ear so just like her we're just

going to do an angle like that angle like that and that will curve back up into a round shape.

Perfect then for the eyes we're gonna give him a little bit more stylized eyes.

So we're just going to kind of give him half circles right.

So we'll put an eye right there and I'm gonna put an eye right there just like that

and start to sketch out his nose.

Keep your pencil sharpen gun sharp mind

draw a line out for the top of his nose and then a line for the bottom of his nose.

We'll give him a nostril hole and then the outer edge of his nose like that.

Let's go ahead and thicken these eyebrows up just a little bit.

There's kind of straight lines that taper off at the end and then we'll go ahead and give them an IRS

and a pupil.

Well I guess just an IRS going to give him kind of a half circle shape like that for his IRS fill that

in.

Do the same thing on the other side.

Straight about their into line your IRS is up what you can do as you can kind of draw a line through

the bottom of them so that you know where the bottom of your IRA should be all the way through to the

other side or the other I's.

All right let's go ahead and kind of draw a line like that just to indicate the bottom of his nose.

And then let's go ahead and give him a mustache.

We could try different things we give him us a mustache that kind of hangs down like that like a handlebar

mustache or we could give him something that kind of comes out like that a little bit more I think in

this case I go ahead give him a handlebar mustache

just like that and then I'll do the other one.

So the one will come down something like that

all right.

Very cool.

It's got under his lip so I'm gonna draw a line like that for his lip and I'm just gonna do something

like this

for his bottom lip so he has a nice big fat bottom lip which then can kind of roll down into his chin

of nice big chin like that but all kind of get lost down here it is really thick neck and let's go ahead

and just keep this character nice and simple let's make him bald so I'm just going to give him kind

of a angled head like that

maybe this is like a wrestler or something like that maybe he's a strong man and a circus or who knows

it could be anything you really want to be.

Throughout this course you gonna be designing your own characters but in this case let's just imagine

that he's like a wrestler or something like that.

So we could go ahead draw shoulders out like that

and let's go ahead and put them into kind of a wrestler suit

something like that

and go out and kind of draw his chest out a little bit so we can see that maybe we could even give him

a few little hairs down here just for fun.

All right cool.

So there we go.

So now we have two roughs of our characters so I use a blue pencil just because it's gonna make it easier

to see the darker pencil on top of it.

But if you want you can just use a normal pencil like I said and just draw lightly.

And what we gonna do in the next lecture is we're gonna go ahead and finalizes by taking a darker pencil

or taking the pencil they already using and just pushing harder and really establishing all these lines.

And that's when you can actually change things as if there's things about this rough drawing that you

don't like.

Then we can go ahead and change that and the next part.

If your drawings don't look as good as mine Don't feel bad because there's a lot to learn about character

design.

So they don't look this good.

That's OK.

Don't worry about it.
