{1078}{1210}Ravenna, Ohio,|April 17, 1966.
{1211}{1272}It's just before dawn|on a midnight shift
{1274}{1364}that Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur|and Deputy Wilbur Neff
{1366}{1453}will never forget.|All morning
{1455}{1520}their police radio|had been filled with all sorts
{1522}{1606}of chatter from witnesses|near Akron, Ohio claiming
{1607}{1673}to have seen a large,|bright disc flying
{1675}{1733}through the sky.|[ police radio chatter ]
{1824}{1867}With just a few hours left|of their day,
{1869}{1997}they noticed something unusual,|an abandoned car on Route 224.
{2215}{2271}Just as Neff is about|to reach the car,
{2273}{2317}Spaur senses something.
{2397}{2481}In Spaur's written report,|he states he feels the need
{2483}{2544}to look behind him.|[ suspenseful music ]

{2988}{3033}to look over his shoulder.
{3203}{3275}They're suddenly engulfed|in light, and the only thing
{3276}{3347}they can hear is a hum,|like a transformer
{3348}{3451}being overloaded.|Both police officers are frozen
{3452}{3535}underneath this light.|Spaur remembers
{3536}{3597}moving his right foot slightly|to make sure he could
{3599}{3653}still move, and when|they realize they aren't
{3655}{3715}actually paralyzed,|they run as fast as they can
{3717}{3762}for the patrol car.
{3801}{3852}Can you imagine,|two veteran officers
{3854}{3907}used to dealing|with local domestic issues
{3909}{3972}now find themselves|facing a UFO ?
{4110}{4180}Immediately, Spaur gets|on the radio and reports

{4621}{4722}or should we get out of here ?|They're absolutely terrified,
{4723}{4787}but they have their orders|to wait for backup,
{4789}{4889}if they survive that long.|And this is just

{5024}{5107}with the police and UFOs,|some of the best
{5108}{5227}documented cases|in MUFON's archives.
{5229}{5325}The Mutual UFO Network,|known as MUFON,
{5327}{5435}is an independent organization|not bound to any government.
{5437}{5509}They investigate reports|of UFO sightings
{5511}{5608}from around the world.|Over the past five decades,
{5610}{5696}they have collected|more than 70,000 files,
{5698}{5817}stored at a secure location|known as Hangar 1.
{5819}{5959}Now, MUFON is granting access|to their vast archive.
{5961}{6049}These are the files|of Hangar 1.
{6271}{6331}Officer Spaur and Neff|are engulfed in the light

{6422}{6546}Is this how we're going to die ?|But then, inexplicably ...
{6605}{6677}the UFO just takes off.
{6749}{6811}They're stunned and relieved|and once they regain
{6812}{6875}their composure,|they do the unthinkable.
{6878}{7001}They actually chase this thing.|[ sirens wailing ]
{7089}{7165}These two officers are|actually pursuing this UFO,
{7167}{7215}going about 100 miles an hour
{7217}{7328}Though it's the Pennsylvania|border along U.S. Route 224.
{7395}{7491}As the Sun rises, the UFO|continues traveling East
{7492}{7622}approaching the Pennsylvania|state line.
{7624}{7709}Patrolman Frank Panzanella,|Conway, Pennsylvania is sitting
{7711}{7804}in his squad car drinking coffee|when he sees a large object
{7806}{7900}fly over him.
{7903}{7977}His first instinct|is also to pursue the UFO.
{7979}{8044}[ siren wailing ]|Panzanella radios dispatch
{8046}{8112}to see if they have anything|on their radar.
{8150}{8197}They pick up|an unidentified object
{8199}{8237}on their screen.
{8270}{8368}The officers aren't the only|ones interested in this craft.
{8412}{8474}Four fighter jets|appear in the sky.
{8475}{8534}The police receive|confirmation on their radios
{8535}{8608}that the jets are pursuing|the UFO.
{8610}{8694}[ sirens wailing ]|The police officers
{8695}{8760}must be thinking, wow,|this is really happening.
{8762}{8810}The Air Force is going|to take down a UFO
{8811}{8895}right in front of us.|But the UFO then shoots upward
{8897}{8988}into the sky at an incredible|speed until it disappears, gone,
{8990}{9047}before the jets can make a move.
{9234}{9291}Within hours, this case|was picked up by the press.
{9292}{9374}And from there, the Air Force|gave it a lot of attention.
{9376}{9463}All of the police officers|involved are then contacted
{9464}{9550}by the military's|UFO investigative unit,
{9551}{9634}Project Blue Book.|This is where
{9635}{9702}the Air Force cover-up begins.|Blue Book Chief,
{9703}{9784}Major Hector Quintanilla,|arrives on the scene.
{9786}{9873}Hector Quintanilla headed|Project Blue Book from 1963
{9875}{9948}until its closure in 1970.|In addition to his degree
{9950}{10010}in physics, he was recruited|to the position
{10011}{10065}because they needed a man|who was, quote,
{10067}{10155}"cool under pressure."|He gets to Dale Spaur
{10156}{10233}and the first thing he says|to him is, "Tell me about
{10235}{10308}this mirage that you saw."|Can you imagine,
{10310}{10355}you're a police officer|and you've just seen
{10356}{10415}the most incredible thing|and the first thing
{10417}{10502}the Air Force does is accuse you|of seeing a mirage.
{10503}{10608}Could the officers|have witnessed a top secret
{10610}{10677}military plane,|forcing the Air Force
{10679}{10755}to try and deflect attention|from the truth ?
{10757}{10839}Spaur describes exactly|what he saw in great detail,
{10840}{10919}but Quintanilla doesn't ask|anymore questions,
{10920}{10969}and he doesn't attempt|to interview the other
{10971}{11037}three officers who also|saw the UFO.
{11079}{11164}Major Quintanilla holds|a press conference to release
{11166}{11263}the Air Force's official|findings on the incident.
{11265}{11342}Quintanilla's explanation|was simple, the officers
{11343}{11413}had been chasing an echo|communication satellite
{11415}{11486}and then after the Sun came up,|that changed to them
{11487}{11598}chasing the planet Venus.|Quintanilla also denied
{11599}{11664}that any jet fighters had been|in the area attempting to engage
{11666}{11768}or intercept a UFO.|Unsatisfied with the official
{11770}{11840}explanation, a number|of investigators,
{11842}{11926}including famed ufologist,|William Weitzel,
{11927}{12011}are determined to find out|what really happened.
{12012}{12091}William Weitzel|got on the scene and found
{12093}{12143}three other police officers|and four other
{12144}{12223}civilian witnesses|who had seen a UFO between
{12224}{12342}5:00 and 5:30 that morning.|[ eeric music ]
{12387}{12419}[ swooshing ]
{12463}{12551}After Weitzel's findings,|Quintanilla is forced
{12552}{12651}to reopen the case.|Realizing simple deflection
{12652}{12753}was not effective,|stronger tactics are employed.
{12755}{12826}Quintanilla and Spaur|sit down for another meeting,
{12827}{12885}this time attended|by William Weitzel
{12887}{12965}and local reporters,|but afterwards, Quintanilla
{12967}{13012}stands by his original|conclusion that
{13014}{13067}the police officers|were chasing Venus.
{13068}{13175}He says, "There was never a UFO.|Case closed."
{13176}{13235}Project Blue Book head,|Quintanilla,
{13236}{13320}successfully closes the case.|The police officers
{13322}{13415}who witnessed the UFO|find themselves discredited,
{13416}{13507}left trying to understand|what they did wrong.
{13509}{13580}After this whole event|was over, the officers involved
{13582}{13665}really took it hard.|Officer Houston quit the force
{13667}{13726}and moved off to Seattle|just to get away.
{13727}{13848}Officer Neff became a recluse.|And I think Dale Spaur
{13850}{13900}had it the worst.|He lost his job
{13902}{13971}and his marriage,|and for years
{13973}{14044}was hounded by the press,|everyone trying to debunk
{14046}{14087}his case and make him look|like he didn't know
{14088}{14144}what he was doing.|And this just made him crazy
{14146}{14206}because he knew that|what he saw was real.
{14207}{14242}He knew it was legitimate.
{14276}{14360}During this Cold War era,|UFOs were treated
{14362}{14406}primarily as a threat.
{14408}{14513}These military people come in|and intimidate the officers,
{14515}{14600}discredit them for something|that obviously the government
{14602}{14731}knows is going on.|Was Quintanilla simply
{14733}{14801}employing the same techniques|that began with
{14803}{14875}Project Blue Book|regarding deflection
{14877}{14975}and discrediting witnesses ?|And when did these techniques
{14976}{15007}come into play ?
{15057}{15142}Up next ...|Zamora starts to back away,
{15143}{15213}a huge flame|bursts out of the craft.
{15215}{15315}[ thunderous explosion ]|Military and media descend
{15316}{15392}on a small town|after one police officer's
{15394}{15480}incredible close encounter|when we return.
{15611}{15678}If I had been working back|in the fifties and sixties,
{15680}{15752}I don't think I would've wanted|to make a UFO report.
{15754}{15821}Something like that could|destroy your credibility.
{15822}{15893}You just turn your head|and look the other way.
{15894}{15977}But, you know, that's stressful,|and you have to carry that
{15978}{16002}with you.
{16232}{16336}Police officers are trained|to be meticulous about details.
{16338}{16402}But when it comes|to UFO sightings,
{16403}{16478}their reports are often|challenged or the incident
{16480}{16616}is dismissed as a hoax.|Hangar 1 files suggest that
{16618}{16709}this treatment lines up directly|with how Project Blue Book
{16710}{16805}and the military dealt with|civilian UFO witnesses
{16806}{16878}and that these protocols|were applied
{16880}{16940}to police officers as well.
{17143}{17284}April 24th, 1964.|Socorro, New Mexico.

{17348}{17440}outside of Socorro, New Mexico.|He's chasing a speeder.
{17494}{17584}All of a sudden, Zamora|hears this roaring sound,
{17586}{17696}and he sees what he thinks|is a flame object in the sky.
{17698}{17753}[ intense roaring ]
{17782}{17862}Zamora breaks off|from the chase to investigate.

{17915}{17958}may have exploded.
{18032}{18110}He's moving closer to where|this event was taking place.
{18166}{18231}It's then that he notices|a shining object,
{18233}{18292}which at first he thought|was an overturned car.
{18391}{18466}Zamora gets on the radio|and tells the dispatcher
{18467}{18523}he's leaving his car|to check out a situation
{18525}{18586}in the arroyo.|[ birds warbling ]
{18587}{18626}[ crickets chirping ]
{18657}{18822}[ intense dramatic music ]|Suddenly, a loud roar emanates
{18824}{18906}from the craft.|[ roaring ]
{19050}{19122}A huge flame|bursts out of the craft.
{19123}{19178}[ thunderous explosion ]
{19206}{19322}The craft begins lifting up|and then immediately takes off.
{19325}{19431}Zamora radios a fellow officer,|Sergeant Chavez, asking him
{19433}{19542}if he sees a craft in the sky.|Radio silence.
{19634}{19708}When Chavez finally|got there, the two of them
{19710}{19778}found four indentations|in the ground
{19780}{19839}where the object had sat,|some burnt vegetation,
{19841}{19945}and they took|very detailed notes and pictures
{19946}{19996}of the whole area,|and they put together
{19998}{20042}a complete report.
{20083}{20176}Two days after the incident,|Major Quintanilla, the head
{20178}{20258}of the Air Force's|Project Blue Book shows up
{20260}{20358}to investigate the report,|but he isn't the only one
{20360}{20404}who descends on the town.
{20578}{20627}The sleepy little town|of Socorro, New Mexico
{20629}{20668}was overrun.
{20670}{20773}Overrun by major journalists,|UPI, AP were there.
{20836}{20895}Government agents, FBI,|military intelligence
{20897}{20952}were there, and private|UFO investigators
{20954}{20994}were also there.|Everyone wanted
{20995}{21078}to look for answers.|The evidence gathered
{21080}{21171}by the police|appears to be compelling.
{21173}{21252}Subsequent research|and analysis of ground samples
{21254}{21361}and photos revealed that|some of the sand in the ground
{21362}{21438}appeared to have been|fused together as if
{21439}{21515}it had come in contact|with some very high,
{21517}{21650}intense form of heat.|[ thunderous explosion ]
{21695}{21827}Then, on June 8th, 1964,|Quintanilla issues his formal
{21829}{21934}Project Blue Book report.|Not surprisingly, this report
{21936}{22011}turned all the evidence|right on its head.
{22013}{22071}It stated|no substantial evidence
{22073}{22150}had been found|to support any kind of event,
{22152}{22224}none of the witnesses|were reliable, and so on.
{22226}{22323}Now, in the classified version|of that report, it was a little
{22325}{22382}bit of a different story.|I have Hector Quintanilla's
{22383}{22477}words right here and I quote,|"There is no doubt
{22478}{22568}that Lonnie Zamora saw an object|that left an impression on him
{22570}{22654}and scared Zamora|to the point of panic."
{22656}{22733}Zamora became so hounded|by the Air Force and ufologists
{22734}{22807}that he quit law enforcement,|and he took a job managing
{22809}{22835}a gas station.
{22900}{22968}If I were in the shoes|of these officers
{22970}{23042}that saw these things|and were then shut up
{23044}{23150}and intimidated, I would|absolutely lose faith in myself.
{23152}{23241}This, I mean, this has to be|a profound effect on their whole
{23243}{23317}sense of who they are, the fact|that the government would
{23318}{23406}step in after these careers|of service and treat them
{23408}{23523}like crazy people when we know|the government knows a heck
{23525}{23575}of a lot more than|than what they're telling us.
{23631}{23717}Based on Quintanilla's|report, the case was closed.
{23718}{23798}But shortly thereafter,|a UFO researcher
{23800}{23910}named James McDonald locates|a local scientist who claims
{23912}{24044}to have analyzed a soil sample|from the Socorro landing site.
{24046}{24100}Mary G. Mayes|was a doctoral student
{24102}{24173}in radiation biology|at the University of New Mexico
{24174}{24289}and she was asked to analyze|some of the soil samples
{24290}{24358}from the Socorro case.|So she didn't find
{24359}{24429}any radiation in the soil,|but she did find
{24430}{24523}two organic substances that|she was not able to identify.
{24526}{24619}This is an important detail.|It proved that whatever landed
{24622}{24714}there had organic material that|is not found on earth.
{24717}{24778}[ engine winding up ]
{24813}{24889}[ thunderous explosion ]|The analysis
{24890}{24978}on the soil samples really|opens up the possibility,
{24980}{25037}maybe the likelihood|that we're talking about
{25038}{25082}two different kinds|of investigations,
{25084}{25138}or two versions|of the investigation,
{25139}{25210}the public one|and the not so public one.
{25211}{25305}What it looks like to me is that|Quintanilla and Blue Book
{25306}{25398}were sent in basically|to mess up the investigation
{25399}{25494}and make Zamora|look like a fool.
{25496}{25570}Civilian police officers|are not the only ones
{25571}{25639}who meet resistance|when it comes to reporting
{25641}{25737}UFO incidents.|Up next, military
{25739}{25826}police officers find themselves|in the wrong place
{25827}{25904}at the wrong time|and the outcome
{25906}{25970}becomes deadly.|[ gunshots ]
{26072}{26148}Many agencies are not open|to these types of investigations
{26148}{26216}because the upper echelon|don't want the media.
{26216}{26274}They don't want to deal with it.
{26276}{26334}That's the biggest problem|with law enforcement,
{26336}{26404}dealing with the upper hands.|When it gets from
{26406}{26460}local government up|to the military, well, then,
{26460}{26496}that's a little bit different.

{30672}{30776}of McGuire Air Force Base|where he is told to wait.
{30778}{30832}Sergeant Jeffrey Morse|from McGuire Air Force Base
{30834}{30884}is called to the front gate|to meet with the officer
{30886}{30945}from Fort Dix to discuss|the incident.
{30947}{31017}The officer is really shaken up.|He tells Morse that he shot
{31019}{31080}at a strange entity,|but it escaped and climbed
{31081}{31193}over the fence|into McGuire Air Force Base.
{31195}{31283}Sergeant Morse says that|he'll handle it from here.
{31353}{31400}Sergeant Morse has to be|thinking this other
{31401}{31464}police officer is crazy,|but he was about to get
{31466}{31493}a big surprise.
{31549}{31632}[ car door opens, closes ]|[ footsteps on gravel ]
{31670}{31736}Morse and several other MPs|head to the area
{31738}{31796}where the entity reportedly|climbed over the fence.
{31842}{31896}At the end of the runway|they see a dead creature
{31897}{31960}with a large head|and slender body.
{32024}{32082}Sergeant Morse can't believe|his eyes.
{32084}{32146}He reports that the smell|is so bad they have
{32148}{32218}to stand back several feet|just to be able to breathe.
{32220}{32292}[ men coughing, gagging ]|He calls in a report
{32294}{32352}and within hours|the Air Force OSI
{32355}{32408}takes control of the situation.
{32410}{32488}AFOSI is the Air Force's|Office of Special
{32491}{32559}Investigations, and they report|directly to the Office
{32560}{32599}of Security to the Air Force.
{32601}{32656}Technically, this means|that they provide
{32657}{32724}independent investigations|outside the traditional
{32725}{32757}military chain of command.
{32830}{32892}Sergeant Morse reports that|he is surprised to see
{32893}{32960}a military team responding|to the incident in a way that
{32961}{33033}suggests this wasn't the first|encounter like this they had
{33035}{33101}dealt with.|Sergeant Morse
{33103}{33188}is not only brought in|for questioning, but threatened.
{33190}{33249}Morse went through several|days of intimidating
{33251}{33374}interrogations where he was told|to keep his mouth shut or else.
{33376}{33470}As incredible as this story|sounds, it is corroborated
{33472}{33585}by George Filer who was brought|in to investigate the incident.
{33587}{33647}When I was investigating|the case, I did interview
{33648}{33799}Sergeant Jeff Morse who claims|to have been out at the place
{33800}{33847}where they found the ET.
{33896}{33976}Within a couple of days|after he was out there,
{33978}{34059}he was transferred to Okinawa.
{34094}{34172}They more or less arrested him|and held him for awhile
{34174}{34226}and essentially gave him|a hard time.
{34287}{34378}When it comes to military|officers who witness UFOs,
{34380}{34483}did the protocol escalate|from discrediting witnesses
{34484}{34578}to completely removing them ?|Now, what happened
{34580}{34637}to Jeffrey Morse|in the aftermath of all of this
{34639}{34719}is kind of symptomatic|of how military personnel
{34721}{34786}were held to different standards|of accountability than, say,
{34788}{34832}civilian police officers|had been.
{34834}{34876}It's one thing|for a small town cop
{34877}{34956}to be ridiculed, but when you're|a military person and you start
{34957}{35022}talking privately|to investigators about this,
{35024}{35108}they're going to come after you.|[ dramatic music ]
{35109}{35149}[ gunshots ]
{35301}{35353}It's almost as if|the military learned
{35355}{35412}from previous reports that|if you remove the witness,
{35414}{35498}the media and investigators|don't have any leads.
{35535}{35625}If this was the military's|new protocol, how far
{35627}{35684}will they go|to ensure the silence
{35685}{35810}of highly credible witnesses ?|Up next,
{35812}{35860}military police officers|[ alarm bell ringing ]
{35862}{35953}report a UFO landing|on a nuclear base.
{35955}{35989}[ intense music ]
{36335}{36390}The Federal Government|is going to give you exactly
{36391}{36469}what they want you to hear.|I don't think they're afraid
{36470}{36526}of anything, they just want|to control things.
{36528}{36589}And as police officers,|we're caught in the middle
{36590}{36643}because the government|does not want this information
{36645}{36677}to get out.
{36809}{36895}MUFON investigators have|uncovered evidence indicating
{36897}{36979}the military's desire|to undermine and discredit
{36981}{37106}law enforcement testimony|regarding UFO encounters.
{37108}{37205}However, despite the intention|to keep these stories hidden,
{37206}{37284}information is still|often leaked.
{37491}{37635}1980, Kirtland Air Force Base,|Albuquerque, New Mexico.
{37638}{37713}Ten minutes before midnight|on August 8th, 1980,
{37714}{37758}three security policemen|are on duty
{37760}{37827}at the Manzano Weapons|Storage Area just East
{37829}{37910}of Kirtland Air Force Base.|The Manzano Weapons
{37911}{37981}Storage Area consisted|of a series of tunnels
{37982}{38069}that had been excavated|into three mountains.
{38070}{38122}In these tunnels|is where the nuclear weapons
{38124}{38170}would be stored.
{38222}{38294}On this night,|three guards at the base
{38296}{38402}saw a very bright light|about three miles northeast
{38403}{38498}of their position.|The men noticed this light
{38499}{38558}traveling very fast|before it suddenly
{38559}{38610}stops over Coyote Canyon.
{38696}{38742}Coyote Canyon|was a restricted area
{38744}{38811}and so all three officers|became very nervous when
{38813}{38893}they saw this lighted object|begin to descend
{38894}{38931}into the canyon.
{38993}{39035}About three miles East|of that position,
{39037}{39087}there was another|military police officer.
{39089}{39155}He was on patrol,|and he was told to check out
{39157}{39203}the weapons barracks area.
{39278}{39346}This officer drove down|an access road to Coyote Canyon,
{39348}{39445}and when he got there, he saw|a very bright light in the air.
{39446}{39518}And above it was|a disc-shaped object.
{39581}{39651}He starts to panic.|He tries to radio for help,
{39653}{39723}but his radio doesn't work.|The officer grabbed
{39726}{39793}his rifle, got out of his Jeep,|and decided to pursue it.
{39794}{39852}[ suspenseful music ]
{39928}{39990}[ rifle shot ]|[metal richochet ]
{39991}{40067}He heard the sound of metal,|and before he knew it,
{40069}{40115}the ship just took off.
{40154}{40233}The lone patrolman who fired|at the object, reports
{40234}{40336}the incident to Sandia Base|security headquarters.
{40338}{40442}The officer on duty reported|the incident on August 9th,
{40443}{40501}but Sandia Base|didn't report it
{40502}{40550}until August 11th, and they were
{40552}{40606}supposed to report it|to the Air Force Office
{40608}{40710}of Special Investigations.|Protocol dictated that
{40711}{40784}anything like that|had to be reported immediately,
{40786}{40824}but it wasn't.
{40888}{40943}But here's where things|get more interesting.
{40945}{41005}For some reason,|the AFOSI office at Kirtland
{41006}{41066}informs Sandia that|the Air Force no longer
{41067}{41144}investigates such sightings|unless they specifically occur
{41146}{41232}on a base.|This doesn't make any sense
{41234}{41295}because the incident|did happen around
{41297}{41363}a U.S. Air Force facility,|and furthermore,
{41365}{41486}near nuclear weapons, and yet|AFOSI is not interested.
{41489}{41582}The AFOSI's main directive|is to provide investigative
{41583}{41654}services to protect the national|security of the U.S.
{41655}{41714}So to claim that a UFO|that lands near
{41715}{41785}a nuclear weapons storage unit|is out of their jurisdiction
{41786}{41822}is ludicrous.
{41870}{41957}On the night of August 11th,|the UFO returns
{41958}{42073}to the exact same location.|At that point, the Air Force
{42074}{42126}just couldn't deny it.
{42158}{42251}On August 22nd, Major Edwards|from Kirtland Air Force Base
{42253}{42299}interviews every officer|who was involved
{42301}{42373}in these multiple sightings.|Major Edwards informs
{42374}{42421}an intelligence officer|named Richard Doty
{42422}{42490}of the persistent accounts|of UFO sightings near their
{42492}{42560}nuclear weapons storage site.|Richard Doty
{42562}{42632}is a controversial character|in the whole history of UFOs.
{42634}{42718}Doty was expert at leading|people on a wild goose chase.
{42751}{42830}It appears that once|Officer Doty became involved,
{42832}{42922}the case was doomed|and eventually buried.
{42923}{42983}This is an important case|because you have multiple
{42985}{43080}witnesses of a multiple sighting|that took place
{43082}{43139}over several days|all claiming to see
{43141}{43200}the same object|near Coyote Canyon.
{43202}{43281}So it appears|there was a cover up.
{43283}{43382}Once again, we see forces|from above come in
{43384}{43476}and take these credible men,|these servants to our country,
{43478}{43569}and make them feel like|they've done something wrong
{43570}{43653}when they were just|doing their duty.
{43655}{43707}If it was a cover up,|who are they hiding
{43709}{43772}the information from ?|The public was not involved
{43774}{43827}in this, it was|strictly military.
{43829}{43886}Was the military|hiding information
{43887}{43918}from the military ?
{43952}{44024}Up next, these incidents|aren't just confined
{44026}{44095}to the ground.|Two respected police
{44097}{44206}helicopter pilots|go head to head with a UFO.
{44208}{44316}The unbelievable dog fight|when "Hangar 1" returns.
{44452}{44514}When you're involved|in a UFO case, your credibility
{44515}{44581}is in question.|The first thing they're going
{44583}{44657}to do is perform a psych test|on you, then they're going
{44659}{44715}to do a drug test on you.
{44717}{44787}They want to intimidate you|and a lot of police officers
{44788}{44815}don't want to go through that.
{45123}{45234}Louisville, Kentucky, 1993.
{45236}{45308}At 11:50 P.M.,|Officers Graham and Downs
{45309}{45373}are in the middle|of a routine patrol flight
{45375}{45449}when they receive a call|about a possible break in
{45451}{45538}near Sanford Avenue|and Buechel Bank Road.
{45595}{45667}The officers fly over|the area when suddenly Graham
{45669}{45715}notices a small light|below them.
{45791}{45857}Downs points the helicopter|spotlight on the object
{45859}{45884}to get a better look.
{45979}{46051}Downs and Graham see|a glowing, pear-shaped object
{46054}{46150}about the size of a basketball.|Suddenly, the object
{46151}{46239}shoots up, right in front|of the helicopter
{46241}{46296}and then spins|counterclockwise around them
{46297}{46380}until it stops right behind|the two pilots.
{46430}{46510}Graham has never seen|anything like it.
{46511}{46598}Now he's afraid the object|is going to ram the tail rotor,
{46599}{46675}so he pushes the helicopter|forward at a 100 miles an hour.
{46756}{46863}Incredibly, the UFO chases them|and at one point
{46865}{46891}even shoots past them.
{46983}{47059}All of the sudden, the UFO|appears to shoot three fireballs
{47060}{47097}at the helicopter.
{47173}{47221}Graham is able to bank|his helicopter away
{47223}{47248}from the blast.
{47303}{47390}The pilots are panicking,|but then the UFO just zips away.
{47587}{47682}[ phone ringing ]|The officers wake up
{47683}{47746}their boss,|Lieutenant David Pope,
{47747}{47807}to give him their full report.|Pope can't believe
{47809}{47857}what he's hearing.|He knows that
{47859}{47945}his officers are credible.|He stated in a report that
{47947}{48034}Graham was a veteran pilot|and that both he and Downs
{48035}{48129}were military veterans|with many years of service.
{48131}{48206}So, look at the facts here.|These are police officers
{48207}{48264}who work in the air.|They work in the sky
{48266}{48298}every single day.
{48300}{48366}Well, of course they know|the difference between a star,
{48367}{48465}a planet, and some|bell-shaped thing flying around
{48467}{48498}their helicopter.
{48610}{48695}Lieutenant Pope submits|his report to superiors,
{48696}{48762}but it goes unnoticed.
{48764}{48830}Downs and Graham can't|believe the report isn't being
{48831}{48904}taken seriously.|And then if that isn't enough,
{48906}{48932}fellow colleagues warn them
{48935}{49007}to just let it go because it was|starting to make the department
{49008}{49095}look bad.|It makes you wonder
{49096}{49150}if these police officers|were hung out to dry
{49151}{49207}with nowhere for them to go|and no one to provide
{49209}{49304}any answers.|Is the military
{49306}{49408}now intentionally ignoring|UFO reports by police officers
{49410}{49505}in order to protect|law enforcement authority
{49507}{49618}or to protect themselves|by avoiding a paper trail ?
{49619}{49666}It's almost a relief|when I hear that
{49667}{49739}there is some official involved,|someone who is trained
{49741}{49829}to observe because|the credibility of these things
{49831}{49876}is so often challenged.
{49943}{50033}One thing that I want to see|in my lifetime is some answer
{50035}{50099}for these experiences|that I've had.
{50101}{50179}I want to see some kind|of government recognition.
{50181}{50228}If they would just, you know,|come out and say, yes,
{50230}{50273}it is real, this is actually|happening.
{50275}{50344}[ suspenseful music ]
{50411}{50457}[ thunderous explosion ]
{50515}{50596}With the majority of UFO|sightings at night, it makes
{50599}{50683}sense that the officers working|these late shifts would be
{50685}{50772}the most likely witnesses|of such phenomena.
{50774}{50861}[ helicopter blades whirring ]|[ sirens wailing ]
{50863}{50947}Coming up,|another predawn UFO chase leaves
{50949}{51090}the police with nowhere to turn|until MUFON uncovers the files.
{51390}{51482}When government policy states|that UFOs do not exist,
{51484}{51566}what happens when their local|law enforcement agents see
{51567}{51691}and report UFO sightings ?|Over the years, it appears
{51693}{51796}policy has changed from|deflection to disaccreditation
{51798}{51896}to disregarding entirely,|leaving police officers
{51898}{51972}with nowhere to turn|when it comes to reporting
{51974}{51997}these incidents.
{52198}{52301}January 5th, 2000|near Scott Air Force Base,
{52302}{52346}Illinois.
{52395}{52446}Melvin Knoll,|a local Highland, Illinois
{52448}{52520}truck driver pulls into|his company office at 4:00 A.M.
{52566}{52621}[ motor shutting down ]
{52747}{52814}He looks up and notices|this really bright light
{52815}{52879}in the sky that's moving|towards him,
{52880}{52949}and he realizes that the light|is actually coming from a huge
{52951}{53068}triangle-looking craft.|A recording from the county
{53070}{53161}radio dispatcher documents|the driver's report
{53163}{53214}to the Highland|Police Department.
{53216}{53266}We received a call|from the Highland PD
{53267}{53312}in reference to a truck driver|who just stopped in
{53314}{53364}and said there was|a flying object.
{53427}{53503}Officer Ed Barton responds|to the call at 4:10 A.M.
{53504}{53562}He asks the county dispatcher|if she's joking.
{53563}{53629}The dispatcher says,|"No, the man who stopped in
{53631}{53715}was totally serious."|Just a quick question.
{53716}{53767}If I happen to find it,|what am I supposed
{53768}{53795}to do with it ?
{53797}{53887}As soon as Officer Barton|turns onto Route 4 ...
{53980}{54058}there's a bright light|coming from a large triangle.
{54152}{54194}He pulls over|to the side of the road,
{54195}{54254}kills the car lights,|and turns off his radio
{54255}{54319}to see if this thing|is making any noise.
{54403}{54485}The object makes no sound,|but he can see every detail
{54487}{54543}on this craft because|it's moving right above him
{54544}{54613}at a steady speed.|As soon as it passes,
{54615}{54699}he radios the sighting|into central command.
{54701}{54759}He predicts that the object|should be hitting the town
{54760}{54833}of Shiloh, Illinois|at any moment.
{54835}{54911}In Shiloh, Officer|David Martin soon radios in
{54914}{54961}that he sees the craft as well.
{54963}{55021}What does it look like|to you ?
{55023}{55072}It's kind of V-shaped.
{55107}{55137}[ police radio chatter ]
{55189}{55252}Several minutes later,|at 4:29 A.M.,
{55254}{55313}Officer Craig Stevens,|who is in the nearby town
{55315}{55384}of Milstadt radios in|that he also sees
{55386}{55482}a triangular UFO|passing over his patrol car.
{55483}{55587}And then at 4:35 A.M.,|another officer in Dupo,
{55588}{55655}Illinois reports that he can|also see the craft,
{55657}{55719}but at this point,|it's climbing altitude fast
{55720}{55810}and he's losing track|of the light.
{55812}{55859}If you would,|contact Scott Air Force Base
{55860}{55945}and see if they have|anything flying in this area.
{55947}{55994}The dispatcher calls|Scott Air Force Base,
{55995}{56045}who report that|they have not detected
{56047}{56100}any unidentified object|on their radar.
{56102}{56187}But here you have no less|than four different officers
{56188}{56281}all witnessing the same craft,|yet Scott Air Force Base claims
{56283}{56368}they've got nothing.|It just doesn't add up.
{56439}{56538}This was a huge case.|You have four police witnesses,
{56539}{56627}media interest, and yet|the military claims that
{56629}{56681}they have no knowledge about|anything that happened
{56683}{56714}in the vicinity.
{56716}{56797}I find it impossible|to believe Scott Air Force Base
{56799}{56870}is not going to be able|to detect a 75-foot
{56871}{56939}triangular craft|in its vicinity,
{56941}{57026}and yet this is exactly|what they claim.
{57027}{57094}Does the government|and military now turn
{57095}{57193}a blind eye when it comes|to these kinds of sightings ?
{57195}{57240}The government knows|what's going on.
{57242}{57304}They don't talk about it.|They won't report it.
{57306}{57363}Any singular event|that has happened
{57366}{57446}with pilots reporting|and the police department
{57447}{57504}on the ground reporting this,|and then the story
{57506}{57574}dies the next day.|You don't know if there's
{57575}{57624}an investigation going on|internally.
{57626}{57675}We know that there is,|but the government doesn't
{57677}{57709}talk about it, any government.
{57740}{57811}As a son of a cop|and having grown up around cops
{57812}{57880}my whole life and knowing|the kinds of witnesses
{57882}{57941}that they are,|I find it offensive
{57942}{58010}when you start seeing|all of the ridicule that so many
{58012}{58094}of them have been facing.|Once a police officer
{58096}{58195}has seen a UFO,|they very adamantly
{58197}{58269}will defend what they saw|against all odds.
{58326}{58398}Many of these police cases|go unreported because of a fear
{58401}{58478}of ridicule, but some|brave officers do come to us
{58480}{58530}to report their story.
{58533}{58591}They recognize that|these are important cases
{58593}{58638}that shouldn't be swept|under the rug.
{58639}{58686}And they'd also like|some answers to what
{58688}{58757}they've witnessed.|We have now become the place
{58758}{58870}for police officers to come to|to report UFO encounters.
{58873}{58939}When you have this kind|of experience seeing a UFO
{58941}{59008}or something as unexplainable,|and you try to report it,
{59010}{59057}they'll tell you,|we don't investigate
{59058}{59114}this kind of phenomena.|If you want answers,
{59115}{59174}you have to go to someone|outside of the system because
{59175}{59231}chances are it's not going to be|investigated through
{59233}{59258}law enforcement channels.
{59331}{59424}Police encounters with UFOs|are some of the most detailed
{59426}{59510}witness reports on record|and yet they are
{59511}{59605}continually disregarded|by higher authorities.
{59606}{59670}Despite the government|distancing themselves
{59672}{59774}from these UFO accounts,|MUFON remains a source
{59776}{59859}that our law enforcement,|both civilian and military,
{59861}{59932}can turn to and be|taken seriously.
{59934}{60040}As these officers continue|to spend so much time
{60042}{60098}on the front lines|of our streets
{60099}{60174}and military bases,|the unusual sightings
{60176}{60310}they document will be revealed|in the files of "Hangar 1."
