losses of Western equipment, and more specifically

about Leopard 2 tanks...

Since the active use of Leopard 2 tanks, we
can summarize some preliminary results regarding

their survivability.

The thing is that Russian propaganda reports
as always about the "destruction" of hundreds

of such "worthless" Leopard 2 tanks.

Let's get into the details.

First, unlike Russian propaganda, which shows
the same tank from different angles and attacks

it several times a day with Lancets, let's
use more objective, verified information about

Leopard 2 losses.

According to Oryx, since June, the Ukrainian
Defense Forces have lost 11 Leopard 2 tanks

and 3 Leopard 2R demining vehicles, but there
is a nuance.

Lost does not mean "destroyed," as the Russians
savor their propaganda.

3 tanks and 1 mine-clearing vehicle can be
considered destroyed, while 8 tanks and 2

mine-clearing vehicles were damaged.

That is, in almost 2 months of active combat
operations, Leopard 2 losses are not of epic

proportions.

Not so long ago I already explained why exactly
Leopard 2 and M2 Bradley played a predominant

role in combat operations in the supply line,
and now I can only repeat it, but with an

important clarification.

But, to begin with, a small flashback to the
distant 1980s, the appearance of the Leopard

2 in the arena.

In the 1980s, the Leopard 2's caterpillar
chains were considered the most resistant

to being blown up by Soviet TM-62 mines.

The Leopard's crawler chain strength was 25%
higher than the T-80, as well as superior

to the T-72, due to its greater weight and
higher track profile.

During the operation in the Zaporizhzhya region,
Leopard 2 tanks were repeatedly blown up by

TM-62s, and not always the caterpillar chain
was torn from the first detonation.

At the same time, the anti-mine protection
of the tank itself guaranteed the preservation

of life of the crew, which is not always the
case with T-80 and T-72 tanks.

Thirdly, Russian propaganda has repeatedly
claimed that the Russian Lancet easily "destroys"

the Leopard 2, but I have not seen a single
fact of such destruction.

The various videos available as evidence demonstrate
the survivability of the tank against these

barrage munitions.

Some of the damaged tanks caused by mine blast
were attacked by several Lancets, but none

of them could penetrate the main armor.

Only exposure to additional ordnance allowed
one of the Leopard 2s to be finished off.

Even hitting the most weakened area, the turret
ring, did not lead to catastrophic consequences.

Yes, the tank was damaged and lost electronic
warfare and navigation equipment, but it was

not "destroyed".

It required repairs, but it was not turned
into scrap metal.

In turn, thanks to the 3kg warhead and shaped
charge, the Lancet-3 successfully burns through

T-72 and T-80 tanks.

So, what do we have in the end?

The Leopard 2s did an excellent job.

The main share of losses, both non-recoverable
and recoverable - is the explosion on mines.

The resistance of armor to external influences
is high and surpasses Russian counterparts.

And the main thing is the losses, they are
lower than permissible, taking into account

the conditions and intensity of combat operations.

All that remains is to get them in sufficient
quantity ...
