to introduce this motion picture,

which is based on the actual
experiences of this pilot,

Colonel Dean Hess
of the United States Air Force.

The remarkable story
of Colonel Hess,

his poignant and often
secret struggle...

with a problem
peculiarly his own,

his courage, resourcefulness
and sacrifice...

have long been a source
of inspiration to me...

and to fighting men
who have known him.

But the story of Colonel Hess...

is more than a dramatic demonstration
of one man's capacity for good.

It is an affirmation of the essential
goodness of the human spirit.

For this reason,
I am happy it is told.

It begins in the summer of 1950,

five years after the end
of World War II...

and one month after
the invasion of South Korea.

It is a quiet,
sunny Sunday morning...

in the pleasant little town
of Westhampton, Ohio.

And so we ask ourselves:

How can we be free of guilt?

Through patience and humility...

will we find happiness.

A broken and contrite heart,
