narrator: In the world's
harshest environments...

[ thunder crashes ]

...Two experience survivalists

put their skills to
the ultimate test

without food, water, or clothes.

Really, really cold.

Narrator: Now, in the
mountainous jungle of nicaragua,

two strangers have
to form a partnership

and work to
survive for 21 days...

Adam: Hunger can drive
people to do crazy [bleep]

whoo!

Suppertime.

I just got in my diary cam for
the "naked and afraid" show.

You're gonna be
out there with a girl?

Yeah.

I hope she's ugly.

[ chuckling ] you
hope she's ugly?

[ both laugh ]

[ laughs ]

so, part of my preparation for
this excursion to the jungle --

I've been doing a lot
of skating barefoot.

Man: Where you going?

Nicaragua! Aah!

Aah!

I'm in nicaragua.

This is the craziest
thing I've ever done.

[ laughs ]

my name's jaclyn.
I'm 25 years old.

I teach primitive skills
-- shelter-building,

making primitive
fires, collecting edibles.

I think it's important

to respect the environment
and the animals.

I have been a
vegetarian for two years.

I'm very spiritual, and it makes
me feel closer to mother earth

when I'm living off the land.

I'm really excited
to meet my partner.

I just wait to see
what he's like.

As I'm looking at the scenery,

you know, higher
elevation, kind of misty,

I think I'm gonna
freeze my ass off.

My name is adam.

I am 29 years old,
and I am a hunter.

I've been called "the
alligator whisperer."

[ smooching ]

my father was a game
warden for the state of florida.

It instilled in me a
passion for hunting,

and it's what I
did professionally

for just over six years.

Meeting a, you know,
complete stranger butt-naked

for the first time,
it's a little weird.

But I'm really focusing
on the task at hand.

Oh, my gosh.

I can't believe I'm
doing this. [ chuckles ]

I am currently single,

but I definitely wish that I
wasn't going to be naked.

I hope that we
can just put it aside,

trek forward, and focus on
what we need to focus on.

Here we go.

Currently, I am
in a relationship.

She's obviously a little
discomforted at the fact

that I'll be naked
around another girl,

but I think there's sort
of a hierarchy of needs.

Food, water, and shelter ranks
pretty high above attraction.

[ jaclyn giggles ]

A little nervous,
but in a good way.

I've been really

Narrator: In addition to
two basic survival items,

jaclyn and adam have been
issued a primitive map of the area.

All right, so, is
that the waterfall?

Yeah.

That's a good landmark.

I'm sure this waterfall has
a river stream, you know,

that comes down.

We'll try and hit that

and just kind of work up
until we find a good campsite.

A good spot. All right.

We have three or four hours

until it's gonna
start to get dark.

Okay. Yeah, so, let's
get on our journey.

Let's do it.

Jaclyn and adam were dropped
off at an elevation of 2,500 feet

in the heart of the
isabel mountain range

of central nicaragua,

far below a 150 foot waterfall.

The higher they climb, the
colder and steeper it will get,

so they hope to find
a flat area to camp

near one of the waterfall's
lower, ancillary streams.

Their trek will take them
into an area dominated

by deadly snakes, including
the venomous fer-de-lance,

as well as poisonous
tarantulas and large pumas,

elusive and solitary hunters
which can weigh over 180 pounds

and pounce on their prey
from up to 20 feet away.

So, what would you
say your strengths are?

Well, I come from a
hunting background.

My dad is a big hunter,
and his father was a hunter.

And, in the outdoors,
wildlife identification, tracking.

Trying to find where all
the little critters are hiding.

Jaclyn: I don't
really kill animals.

Okay.

I'm a vegetarian. [ laughs ]

adam: I mean, I
just met my partner.

She's a pretty girl, but,
as a hunter, you know,

when I found out jaclyn
was a vegetarian, I thought,

"oh, this should
be interesting."

it's gonna make
a difficult situation

already even more difficult.

I know a lot about
edible plants.

Good.

Adam seems like a nice guy.

He is easy to talk to, and
he's open to suggestion,

and I feel like we
communicate well.

You handle the vegetables,
I'll handle the meat.

Okay. [ laughs ] that's perfect.

Adam: I'm sure if she
had her preference,

she'd want to just have
fruits and vegetables

through this whole thing,

but one of the items
on my bucket list

is to convert a
vegetarian to a meat-eater.

Hopefully, I'll be able to
check that one off the list

by the end of this.

Narrator: Working through their
different survival philosophies

will be a critical factor in
jaclyn and adam's success.

Before they left, experts
in primitive-survival

and special-forces training
assessed adam and jaclyn's

skills, experience,
and mental strength,

and assigned them a
primitive survival rating, or psr.

Adam's lifetime of wildlife
tracking and hunting placed him

in the upper-intermediate range,

but the fact that he's
never applied those skills

in a jungle environment
reduces his starting score to a 7.3.

Jaclyn's vast primitive
skills and plant identification

are a significant strength,

but her adherence to
a strictly vegetarian diet

could limit her
opportunities for protein.

She scores just below
adam with a psr of 7.1.

If they are able
to make it 21 days,

their psrs will be reevaluated.

Adam: Careful. This is loose.

[ grunts ]

jaclyn: Awesome. Thank you. Yep.

I think this is a good spot.

We got a little bit of cover,
but also a little bit of sun.

And can't beat being
so close to the water.

We're gonna need it.

Absolutely. Okay, cool.

Yeah. Real quick.

But I'm collecting wood, also.

Jaclyn: I'm really glad
that he's my partner

'cause he is easy to talk
to, and I'm a fan of beards.

So, he has a pretty
wicked-awesome beard,

and he's attractive.

He's a good-looking guy.

It's a little awkward
that we're both naked.

I'm gonna try to make an outfit.

I just feel more comfortable
when I'm covered up.

You look like a pro.

Adam: Jaclyn is a
very attractive girl.

She's a sweetheart, but I do
have a girlfriend back home.

And I came here with
one thing on my mind,

and that's to survive and
make it the full 21 days.

The sun's going
down. It gets dark quick.

We're trying to
get this finished up

at least where it's
reasonable for the night.

Jaclyn: I haven't really
even thought about

what it's gonna be like to
sleep naked next to him.

I'm just focused right now
on what we're gonna do,

but honestly, if it
comes down to it,

we can help each other
out with staying warm,

and we have bigger priorities
that we have to worry about

rather than...Yeah.

We have bigger

Narrator: Using every
second of remaining daylight,

jaclyn and adam are able
to complete their shelter.

But as a storm
brews and night falls,

they have no time
left to make fire.

It's the middle of the
night, and it's raining.

It's really cold.

Now all the ground is wet,

and the firewood is
probably a little bit more wet.

It's too cold.

We have to huddle
together for warmth.

We have to.

It's actually just
too cold here.

It sucks. It sucks so bad.

I do see the sun.

Jaclyn: You see
the sun? I see it.

Yeah? It's still cold.

Whew!

[ sighs ]

adam: We tried our best to,
you know, share body heat.

I mean, otherwise,
you'd freeze out here.

There's just no way.

We didn't have a
fire, it was raining,

it was super-cold, and we
had to think of something

to try and stay warm.

I'm still shivering. I know.

Narrator: In addition to
dealing with the extreme cold,

jaclyn and adam have
gone an entire day

without a fire to boil and
purify any drinking water.

Jaclyn's fire starter
is their best hope

of getting a spark in
these wet conditions.

Jaclyn: We need to figure out
a system of collecting rainwater

or purifying water because
I'm definitely feeling

the effects of lack of water.

Yeah!

Good job.

Narrator: Without water,

the survivalists' kidneys
and other internal organs

will begin to stop functioning
after about 48 hours.

They quickly gather water into
bamboo containers for boiling.

Jaclyn: Oh, nice.

Adam: The water that's
right here near our camp --

you know, there's no telling

what kind of contaminates
could be in there,

but as it gets farther and
farther away from its source,

it has a better
chance of picking up

bacteria or animal
fecal matter --

things like that that
can make you sick.

Just want some water.

I know.

Narrator: Despite
several hours of attempts,

the lack of dry wood
makes it impossible

to get a fire hot
enough to reach a boil.

Deadly pathogens could
still be living in the water.

We need to do something
else 'cause it's cooling off.

It's not even -- I mean, I
can hold my finger in it now.

They are now only
nine hours away

from the latter and deadly
stages of dehydration.

Adam: You think that
water at the waterfall

is safe to drink
without boiling?

Jaclyn: If we go up there? Yeah.

It's coming straight
off the mountain.

I mean, it's like a
limestone-cliff mountain.

Yeah.

I can see the waterfall
from where we are,

but it's pretty far --
maybe a couple miles.

Maybe tomorrow morning, if
we feel okay resting tonight,

we can wake up,
and if we feel up to it,

try and go up there.

Yeah.

Jaclyn: I do think making this
trek to the waterfall is a bit risky,

but I cannot go another
day without water.

You all right?

I feel like [bleep]

you do? Oh, yeah.

I'm out of breath, and
my heartbeat is really fast.

And, um... Yeah,
I'm a little dizzy.

I just need to drink water.

Narrator: Adam and jaclyn face

a desperate, three-mile
climb to the waterfall.

Dizziness, confusion,
and high heart rates

will indicate the early
onset of organ failure.

Ohh.

I'm hurting.

Can you make it?

I can make it.

[ groans ]

adam: She's toughing it out.

She's hanging in
there. Slow and steady.

Holy [bleep]

dang, that's really far from us.

[ sighs ]

you need help?

No.

[ sighs ]

oh, wow. [ sighs ]

[ jaclyn groans ]

wow.

I'm really dizzy.

Dehydration's
extremely hard to reverse.

It happens fast,
and it's very scary.

If we don't get water soon,
it's a possible tap-out scenario.

and that's it. That's game over.

[ jaclyn groans ]

adam: Are you
gonna make it, champ?

We're on the home stretch.

You think we're close?

Yeah, maybe another
10 minutes at most.

Narrator: 2 1/2 days into
their three-week challenge,

adam and jaclyn
have had no water.

Still over a mile from
a safe water source,

jaclyn is suffering
from the initial stages

of organ failure and
acute dehydration.

Adam: I see it.

Oh, there it is.

Oh! Yes! Wow.

Look at that. Oh!

Finally made it. Wow.

Holy crap.

That's pretty.

Wow.

Wow.

That is so good.

[ sighs ]

I feel so much better.

You do? Yeah.

Jaclyn: I really appreciate how
adam is being conscious of me

and very aware of my
needs as well as his.

I really appreciate that.

Adam: I think we
should start to get back.

We should bring
some back to camp.

Adam: I wanted to do some
exploring while I have the energy

and I have to
calories to go hunt,

maybe get lucky and come across
a food source, preferably meat.

Jaclyn: Adam is out on a
trek, and I want to go out

and try to find edible plants so
I can make sure to do my share

and bring something
to the table, as well.

Mmm.

Sorry, adam.

Oh. Oh.

Mmm.

Adam: Mm.

Jaclyn: How's it going?

It went good.

That was a good trek.

I got a couple crabs, a couple
snails, and an earthworm.

I don't eat meat, so I've
never, ever even thought about

eating a snail before.

You're gonna just put this
in your mouth and chomp it?

Yep.

[ crunching ]

mmm.

I love it.

You got to just get
it down the hatch.

[ chuckles ]

you want these
two or this big one?

I'm very happy.
I'm very thankful.

But I'm...

Jaclyn: I know he put
good intention into it,

and I appreciate his efforts,
but I just don't eat meat.

You really can't eat that
one tiny-ass, little crab?

I can't.

Adam: At the end of the day,

we've got to get
the calories in,

and I can't force-feed her.

You know, if she's
hungry enough,

she'll find a way
to get it down.

Narrator: The caloric difference
between each of the survivalists'

first meals is significant.

At most, jaclyn's edibles

have combined to
provide about 30 calories.

Adam's intake is
easily four times that.

Both are still well below

the 2,000 calories most
humans need per day.

Over the next three days,

adam and jaclyn continue
to search separately

for more substantial
food sources.

How are you doing?

Good. How'd it go?

Not good.

And with dryer weather,
they are finally able

to boil and purify the water
they have closer to camp.

That's awesome.

But each night, the
bitter cold returns.

It's so...Cold.

We don't know what to do.

[ animal growling ]

adam: What was
that? What was that?

[ animal growling ]

Listen.

Yeah, I can hear
it. What is that?

I can't see anything.

[ growling continues ]

it sounds like a puma.

Holy crap.

We're not going anywhere.

That thing was so
creepy last night.

I can't even describe it.

It was just kind of like,
"what the hell is that?"

it was really loud.

Adam: There are
some pumas out here.

I know that they're
in this region.

So, you know, we
got to keep an eye out.

I need to make a weapon.

My skills kind of revolve
around wildlife identification,

wildlife tracking, being
able to walk into the woods,

walk into your surroundings,

and find what is
a potential threat,

"where can I find safe shelter?"

I'll just kind of go on a
walk, scouting, you know?

Okay.

I have an idea. Yeah?

At work, we have a call

as a way to communicate
with each other.

It's just a -- it's a hoot.

It's like a, "hee-ooh!"

and one means,
like, "come here."

that he's being careful.

I'm kind of worried.

Adam: I found a track
here on this muddy trail.

This is the first
track I've seen.

I know it's a puma.

It's a pretty good size.

We have panthers
back in florida,

and I know they're
quite a solitary creature,

but we're in their home turf,

and, hopefully, we won't
cross paths with any.

Jaclyn: Yoo-hoo?

It's a nice, little cave.

This is a little bit
more protected,

so I'm gonna talk to adam
about that and see what he thinks.

Adam: All right, show me the
cave you were talking about.

I found this cave when I was
collecting more palm for us.

I have not seen this.

How far back in does it go?

Is there any critters in there?

I hope not.

I kind of like this.

I kind of like it, too.

We've been sleeping freezing.

We've been shivering all night,
so what do we have to lose?

Yeah, I agree. I
think we should try it.

Adam: I think switching
to the cave is a good idea.

I think it was so damn
cold in that shelter,

and we just can't afford
to get hypothermia.

If it provides shelter from
the rain and it's less cold,

then it's a great move.

Oh, gosh.

Almost stepped right on that.

Narrator: The snake
is a fer-de-lance,

one of the most venomous
and deadly in the world.

One bite could have killed
adam in a matter of hours.

Jaclyn: Seeing that snake
really changed everything.

It really brought to light how
dangerous everything is out here

and how quickly one
of us could be taken out.

That's scary.

We have to be really
careful when we're walking.

Yes, we do.

But now we got supper.

Adam: Anytime I go out and
am lucky enough to snatch up

a snake or whatever, I'm happy.

That's a hot meal for both of
us and a little morale boost.

Got my heart
pumping a little bit.

That was exciting.

Adam: Not sure if you guys
can see it, but here's his body.

Jaclyn: That's the body.

And right there is his head.

You can see his pointed nose.

That means he's venomous.

And then, we might
be able to see his fangs.

Can you see those?

Yeah.

Look at those. That's
definitely venomous.

I think it may be
a fer-de-lance.

Luckily, jaclyn or
I didn't step on it.

I mean, he was literally
in the middle of the trail.

Adam: Let's get this
bad boy skunked out.

Ew! Was it moving in your hand?

Mm-hmm.

Can I do anything to help?

Yeah, come here.

Jaclyn: If adam goes out
and catches something,

I'll help him prepare it.

But I'm not gonna have that.

adam: I'm a bit
worried about jaclyn.

She's got to find some protein
and get some meat in her diet.

Narrator: As the gap between
adam and jaclyn's caloric intake

continues to widen,

they settle in for their
first night in the cave.

[ insects chirping ]

adam: At night, you can
hear the cicadas crank up,

the fireflies buzzing
by your ears.

The little creatures come out.

Adam: Look how big it is.

Jaclyn: It's really big.

There are the biggest,
gnarliest bugs here.

And they want to come
in our cave at night.

These [bleep] spiders.

I hate it!

Aah!!

Holy crap.

Ugh.

There's, like, hundreds
of them in here.

You see all those?

I guess there's really not
much we can do about it.

Yeah. Get used to the bugs.

Adam: Today's day 10.

I've had more trouble
sleeping last night

than maybe any other night.

I was tired, and, you
know, sleeping with the bugs

enduring the freezing
cold -- it's tough.

My hair is a pouf.

I'm really dirty.

I'm definitely skinny.

I have an absurd amount
of bug bites on my body.

Among everything else out here,

I'm on my period right
now, and it's difficult.

I feel physically drained.

I mean, usually
during this time,

I eat a lot more food

because I know I'm
depleting my nutrients.

I'm trying to keep
a positive mind,

but that's where
I'm at right now.

We're nestled in here
as best as we can.

There's our fire.

High hopes for a
warm, good sleep.

"warm" is the key word.

[ vegetation snaps ]

Well, it wasn't gonna be small.

It's pitch-black out.

I know.

Holy crap.

That was right outside the cave.

You know, I'm
not sure what it is.

It's very scary.

You can't really let
your guard down.

[ animal growls ]

narrator: After another long
night in fear of a puma in the area,

adam and jaclyn are
suffering the combined effects

of sleep deprivation
and lack of food.

Adam: Holy crap. Jaclyn: Ohh.

That was really fast.

Something just ran straight
through our little camp here.

It wasn't an armadillo.
It wasn't a possum.

It looked like it
was, like, this big.

Whatever that was this morning,

I'm gonna go find it and
bring it back to camp and eat it.

I'm gonna get a hot ember
and put it in this moss.

That'll work.

And then, I'm gonna
stick it in one of those dens

underneath that rock and
blow a bunch of smoke in there.

It should come out in a hurry.

So, I'm gonna try
this one right here.

[ blowing ]

oh, see? [ animals squeaking ]

something's coming out.

I don't know what those are.

They had a nest in there.

But I don't hear anything,
and I don't see anything.

Out here, there's literally
a million hiding places

just within eyesight.

So, it's tough to find
where's a good spot.

Jaclyn: I am so
out-of-this-world exhausted.

We haven't eaten very much
food, and it's all kind of piling up.

And I feel like a
walking zombie.

I just am craving protein,

and I can feel my muscles
kind of depleting because of that.

But I guess I believe no
matter how hard things get,

I'm not gonna let down
what I believe is right.

that she brought

but we can't survive only
eating plants for 21 days.

I guess it's not huge,
but it's pretty big.

Adam: Oh, yeah.

Do you want to eat him?

If I kill him, you
won't eat him?

I don't know.

No idea what kind it is.

But he's definitely
big enough to eat.

We should eat him.

You don't have to
watch me butcher him.

It's not much, but I'll take it.

I think we should
cook him up now.

Adam: Gutting him.

Do you want to see? Yeah.

So, I made a little incision,

and then now I'm gonna
squeeze his guts out.

Oh, my -- okay.

So, you don't really
need to eat that.

Jaclyn: I feel really
crappy right now,

and I know that's because
my body is craving protein.

He's now a food source for us.

He didn't suffer.

You know, that's a good thing.

That's what we want.

Jaclyn: Ew, why does
the -- his hand is moving.

It's just muscle, heat.

He's not alive though.

It's, like, reacting to the heat

as if it's trying to get away.

It's nerves.

You got to think --

a muscle, it's
connected to a tendon,

and you put that
over a heat source,

it contracts and moves.

Have you ever eaten a lizard?

Alligator.

And the alligator was doing
that when you were heating it up?

It was thrashing and
contracting its muscles?

Well, an alligator -- when we
cook them, we butcher them.

How do you know
when it's cooked?

I'm gonna cook
him just very well.

So, that way, we
know he's cooked good.

I just am rising up
to this challenge.

I'm doing everything
that I need to do,

and I need some protein.

Tastes meaty.

This is good.

This is pretty good.

Meat. Mmm.

This is the first time

I've ever, like, experienced
killing an animal

and cooking it and eating it.

Proud of you.

You know, when I'm
living in an abundant life

where I have all these
choices of what to eat,

I'll choose what I want, but
here I don't have a choice.

I just have to do what's
best for myself right now.

We're in a survival situation.

Going into a cave.

[ gasps ] oh, gosh.

[ shudders ]

Narrator: 17 days into their
three-week survival challenge

in the mountains of nicaragua,

adam and jaclyn's initial
primitive survival ratings,

or psrs, are being affected
by their performance.

Despite adam's difficulty
applying his vast hunting skills

to a jungle environment,

he has still managed to secure

several solid sources
of protein for the team,

while jaclyn's
decision to remain true

to her vegetarian ideology
for the majority of the challenge

has severely weakened
her physical state.

With a journey of six miles
through treacherous terrain

just days away,
they still have time

to raise their scores if
they can complete the trip.

What if we're in a situation

where we have a
chance to eat meat --

say we have a duck
or something like that --

but for whatever
circumstance, I can't kill it.

Could you finish the
duck off, chop his head off?

Jaclyn: I'm really hungry.
It changes a person.

Hunger can drive
people to do crazy [bleep]

jaclyn: It's strange to look back
and think that we had just met

'cause we've spent
so much time together,

and I'm really glad
that he's my partner

'cause he's an awesome,
awesome person.

You know, a lot of people
would look at me and say,

"oh, you're a dumb hippie."

but you kind of,
like, just listen to it,

and I think that's cool.

And I'm willing to learn, too.

I think that's huge.

Maybe it's just this
situation that is like --

what would we be
like if we'd met --

that's what I'm saying.

If we had just met
completely outside of this

and just on the street
or something like that,

I don't know.

I'm not sure.

I don't know if we
would have the same...

I don't think so.

...You know, relationship.

I foresee us getting
together in the future

and traveling or doing
some fun adventure.

Who knows what
the future will bring?

In order to be rescued
by a land vehicle,

adam and jaclyn face a
dangerous, six-mile trek

back down the mountain.

They'll have to navigate
over steep rocks

and through
snake-infested streams

to reach a narrow, private road
used by local banana farmers.

[ sighs ]

it's definitely tricky
with all these rocks.

Jaclyn: Whew!

Careful.

There's really nowhere
to put your feet.

Ow.

Going into a cave.

Another big step down.

Jaclyn: Adam is being very
cautious, which I appreciate.

It reminds me that I
need to be the same way.

It's very, very difficult
to keep my mind in check

when I'm that malnourished
and deprived of food.

It's tricky.

We have to be really careful.

Adam: That's a big rock.

It looks pretty frigging deep.

know the obstacles and dangers.

experienced by the survivalists

over the course of their
three-week challenge was severe.

Adam lost a total of 25 pounds
while jaclyn lost 18 pounds.

Adam's persistence and expert
hunting skills were responsible

for securing much-needed
protein for the team.

Jaclyn ultimately proved capable

of making the tough
choices necessary to survive.

As a result, her psr
rises from a 7.1 to a 7.5.

Adam's score also
improves from a 7.3 to a 7.8.

I'm with my girlfriend,
