Narrator: For the next 21
days, one man and one woman

are taking on the
ultimate survival challenge.

They will endure without
food, water, or clothes

in order to survive the
treacherous namibian desert.

Luke: I can't
physically stand up.

Narrator: They will have to rely
on each other, naked and afraid.

Luke: The baboons,
they mean business.

My heart rate is up, my blood's
pumping, my adrenaline's going.

Whoo!

But it's excited nerves.

My name is lindsey leitelt.

I am from pine
mountain club, california.

I am a home-schooling
mother of two.

So, we're on our
way to the airport.

What do you think, babe?

I think you're
nuts. [ chuckles ]

that's my full
supporter right there.

I do endurance races
and hike and camp.

I always go head
first into a situation,

and I have the
scars to prove it.

I've never tested my skills
in a desert environment,

so this is gonna
be a big challenge.

I want to prove to
my kids and the world

that a mom can do this.

I'm gonna make it 100%. 21 days.

my name is luke mclaughlin.

I'm from salt lake city, utah,

and I'm a wilderness
field instructor.

I take at-risk youth,

and I show them how
to live in the wilderness.

I do work with a
lot of primitive skills.

I have a lot of experience
with primitive fire.

At my program, I teach
bow drilling every single day.

Watch out for thorns.

Instead of fighting
against nature,

which is an impossible
task, I try to seek balance.

I try to seek harmony.

Sometimes, my frustration
gets the best of me.

When I get pissed, I get
pissed, but I'm not gonna let it

stand in the way of
me getting the job done.

I am not a naked person.

I'm not even a "walk around
in a bathing suit" person.

There's nothing like, you
know, baptism by fire, I suppose.

As far as being naked goes,

I don't have a big
problem with it.

I feel sorry for everyone
else who has to see it.

I think the most important
thing in any survival situation

is your mind set,
so I'd really like

a partner who's positive,
a partner who is tough,

who's willing to hear me out on
my side and try out some things.

Welcome to being
my first. [ laughs ]

narrator: Luke and lindsey
have chosen their survival items

to deal with the challenges

of namibia's unyielding
vegetation and scarce water.

I have a pot. All right.

So, good for getting
water, boiling it.

Food, whatever we have. Sweet.

I have trusty tomahawk

for splitting and
chopping and digging.

Our map.

Oh, nice. Let's take a look.

The pair will spend
the next 21 days

in namibia in
sub-saharan africa.

In this bleak and
unrelenting landscape,

they will have to navigate
a dangerous terrain

littered with razor-sharp
acacia thorns,

surrounded by a diverse
array of potential predators --

the lethal black mamba --

the fastest and most aggressive
snake on the continent.

Large predatory cats

including leopards that prowl
the sparse water holes for prey.

And fiercely territorial
chacma baboons.

The mountains
are -- to our south.

And I'm guessing
this blue is water --

our precious resource
that we want to find.

Ready? Hey, lead the way.

A small crew will
follow the survivalists

with instructions
not to intervene

unless there is a
medical emergency.

Watch the thorns.

Ooh. Right here and right there.

They're all over. Just
right -- these guys here.

Luke: Ooh! [ grunts ]

oh [bleep]

ow. That's that son of a bitch.

Luke: My big fear,
number one, is baboons.

Narrator: Chacma
baboons live in large groups.

Any encroachment on their
territory provokes aggression,

and their strength in numbers
could easily take down

animals much larger
than themselves.

Lindsey: I just hope that they
stay away, at least until we move on.

Pardon for the
balls in your face.

Lindsey: It's all right. I'm
used to balls in my face.

I have two boys, a husband,
and three male dogs.

Really? Yeah.

Oh, wow.

Luke: Lindsey's awesome.

She right off the bat was
joking, thinking positive.

I hope lindsey has
some of the primitive skills

that can help us out
here, and we'll see.

Hopefully it goes well.

That way? Sure.

Lindsey: My first impression --
he's like a total mountain man.

He likes to talk.

If you swipe the grass,
get a little protection.

But he's got really
good information.

It seems like he
knows his stuff.

Thank god there
are no thorns here.

That is gonna make
life easier for us for sure.

I'm really thirsty right now.
I'm probably dehydrated.

Want to try out that water?

This looks really
nasty, but okay.

I'll start digging here.

Most water sources, you
want to be really careful.

Just to play it safe,
you can dig close.

Basically, I'm getting to
the water table underneath.

Not a lot of stuff
grows in this.

Yeah, so this is
drinkable water here.

Narrator: While safer to drink,
ground water may still contain

toxic chemicals
dangerous to humans.

These can cause headaches,
diarrhea, and in severe cases,

the shutting down
of major organs.

[ sips ]

hmm. Tastes a little earthy.

Just looks -- looks
nasty, but it's not.

[ birds squawking ]

how you doing over there?

Uh... Oh, my gosh.

There's a dead carcass
of some sort of deer type.

No way. Yeah.

Seriously? Yeah,
it's a full carcass.

It doesn't even look like
it's been gnashed on yet.

Beautiful!

That's leather, that's
cordage, it's sinew.

That's wilderness gold.

Using the area's
natural resources

is just one of the many
skills that will be tested

during luke and lindsey's
21-day challenge.

A master survival instructor

with over 30 years of hands-on
knowledge of primitive skills

has evaluated luke and lindsey
based on their experience,

giving each one a psr --
a primitive survival rating.

Their abilities and
primitive methods

were assessed and
weighted according to

the specific challenges
of the namibian desert.

Like that.

Luke has expert-level
primitive skills.

Whoo!

But he's easily frustrated,

sometimes preventing him
from accomplishing tasks.

He scores a psr of 8.1.

Lindsey's endurance gives her
high strength and mental scores.

Whoo!

But untested in a
desert environment,

her rating has been set at 6.7.

Their psrs will be reevaluated

at the end of the
21-day challenge.

Lindsey: He looks like a kudu,
which is in the antelope family.

It smells awful.

There's flies everywhere.

So, yeah, I'm
trying to figure out

what the hell happened
to this guy here.

Did, you know, a lion
or a hyena go after him?

And right now, I mean,
I don't see any wounds.

I really hope that
kudu didn't die

from the water we just drank.

Uh...

I think the kudu died of
rabies because it did have

some junk around its mouth
and it died next to water.

When animals contract rabies,
they become extremely thirsty,

but the disease won't
allow them to drink.

So, they actually die of thirst.

Narrator: The rabies virus
moves from the brain to the saliva,

and the disease can be
transmitted through contact

with brain tissue, spinal
cord, or salivary glands.

Luke: Even if it is diseased,

this fur is super
valuable as an insulator.

Usually, I could tan
that hide with the brains.

It wouldn't be so stinky,
wouldn't be so nasty,

but obviously, rabies,
brains, spinal cord --

that whole thing, you
don't want to touch.

What do you say we
establish camp and then --

do what we got to do with this.

Yeah.

So, we're walking
down, we look for shelter,

and we've seen the
clouds billowing up.

If you're wet at night,
you're miserable.

You're done. Your
morale will get shot so fast.

How about just right
on the flat part there?

It'll be out of the
wind, out of the rain.

That's what we need. Uh-huh.

That looks promising to me.

[ thunder rumbling ]

[ sniffing ] ooh.

Stink?

Yeah, something's
been living here.

[bleep] all over. Crap all over.

There's hair in that, so
that's a predator of some kind.

Lindsey: The poop
is actually quite big.

There are leopards out
here, could be baboons.

That's a little bit daunting

to be sleeping where you
know there is animal activity.

You know, it's disgusting,
but looks like something

we could make work till
we get our other shelter up.

Luke: To make a decent shelter,
that's gonna take a couple days effort.

There are storm clouds
brewing everywhere,

and so we really do need

to just probably count
this as good tonight.

I might try to go get the
kudu, make some quick cuts,

at least give us, like, some
sort of a blanket tonight.

Maybe I go do that?

Yeah, I can pull grass. Cool.

Starting to get
a bit cold, windy.

You can hear the thunder.

I feel really bad having
him go out by himself,

but hopefully, he'll come back
and have some warmth for us.

Narrator: On their first day in
namibia, luke and lindsey are feeling

the effects of an unseasonably
cold and rainy spell

that has hit the region,

dropping temperatures by
more than 50 degrees by nightfall.

[ luke sighs ]

lindsey: Oh, man, it
is really raining now.

Hope luke's doing okay.

Narrator: In these conditions,
hypothermia becomes a major threat

and can lead to unconsciousness

in as little as
one to two hours.

There we go.

Hey, partner. Hey.

Sweet.

It's -- I mean, it's super wet.

It's -- you know,

I'm gonna try to dry it out
here real quick, but we'll see.

You look cold. I am cold.

[ chuckles ] yeah?

I put a layer of grass on
the bottom of the rocks,

so at least it's
a little bit cushy.

[ sighs ] okay.

I think skin-to-skin
contact is happening.

There you go.

The hide smells like fresh meat.

I'm worried about large
predators coming to us tonight,

but at least being
protected on three sides

gives us a fair shot that we'll
be able to protect ourselves.

[ thunder rumbling ]

still struggling
with getting comfy.

No sleep. Zero sleep so far.

We got a long night
still ahead of us.

It's still early.

We just know it's
gonna suck tonight.

We're kind of
just living with it.

[ animals grunting ]

we hear something
out there, but...

Something was over
there making noise.

[ grunting continues ]

Hopefully, those baboons
stay where they are.

Super early.

Lindsey: Don't seem to be
here anymore. They went away.

We just had... The
longest night ever.

...A miserable night.

We're gonna bust some
ass today, get a new shelter.

Something that's waterproof.

And fire.

What is that?

These weren't here
yesterday. Baboon tracks?

Those are huge.

Luke: The baboons, they
can be kind of aggressive.

They mean business.

We really need
to get a fire soon.

[ baboons grunting ]

might as well build it
here, close to the cave.

We're trying to do,

like, almost like a
sweat-lodge type shelter --

some saplings kind of bent
over, do some cross lashings.

Once we got the structure up,

I'm gonna try to
get some fire going.

Luke: How's that for a circle?

Yeah. Let's get to work. I
need to heat up a little bit.

Need to move? Yeah.

Okay.

I really, really don't
want to be cold tonight.

[ thunder rumbling ]

phew. God, that weather
changes [groans] so fast.

Yep.

I know we have a long time,

but we kind of want to get
our permanent shelter done

so we can have fire.

[bleep] sucks to waste a
day when we still feel good.

It's just too cold to
work through the rain.

[ thunder crashes ]

super motivated to get
this shelter done today.

We cannot stay up for another
12 hours in our rock cave.

It is miserable.

Sun feels nice.
It's a good change.

So, lower stuff, obviously, is
underneath the higher stuff.

Just kind of like shingles.

The rain rolls right off,
hopefully, if it does rain.

We're gonna try to get a whole
bunch of insulation in there.

Just be covered in grass.

Hopefully, our heat
will be held together.

This is big for us.

Oh, this is nice.

Lindsey: We're super
excited about our new shelter.

Our morale is definitely up.

Well, I'm gonna
go get some sinew.

Okay.

Get some wood, find some tinder,

and hopefully get some
fire going later today.

Sounds good.

[ insects buzzing ]

luke: There's sinew
all along the spine here.

Oh, yeah. Oh, look at that.

That right there --
that is what I'm after.

If I can make some good, strong
cordage that's gonna last us,

there's no reason we
shouldn't have fire tonight.

This is fire, hopefully.

Right now, here
in this situation,

I'm trying a bow
drill to get fire.

With a bow drill, with
that sinew cordage,

it'll be easy to make fire.

Lindsey: Starting a friction
fire is not my strongest suit.

Lindsey: That is so beautiful.

Do it for a living.

That felt really good
and looked really good,

and I didn't get a coal.

Cordage is breaking. [bleep]

what if we used a smaller bow?

Yeah, it's just all
unraveled now.

[bleep]

how do you feel
about a hand drill?

Not with this wood.

now I have to go back to the
disgusting, rotting kudu corpse

to try and extract
some more sinew.

[ insects buzzing ]

this might be rabid.

There are maggots
everywhere, blood everywhere,

and it's all ruptured,
so there's nothing safe.

Is this cordage worth
possibly getting rabies?

Shouldn't take that risk.

It just sucks without fire.

Lindsey: I don't want
to sit here useless.

I want do do something helpful.

Oh, my god.

Who needs sinew
when you have hair?

Hopefully, it'll
be all worth it.

I totally believe in your
skills for this set of hair.

dizzy already.

Luke: My body's just starting
to get a little bit weaker.

I know I got to start
eating more food,

but fire -- it's everything.

It's survival.

Come on!!

Lindsey: I know luke's
feeling the pressure,

and I think it's
super frustrating

not having the same materials
he's used to using out here.

It's another very cold night.

We have to have fire.

It's really,
really, really cold.

When we say cold... Shaking.

...We're not just,
like, unpleasant, like,

"oh, I wish" -- like, cold.

Like, you're shaking
the whole time.

[ baboons grunting ]

yeah, this [bleep] sucks.

Last night was brutal.

We're burning a lot of energy

that we don't
have just shivering.

We cannot have
another night like that.

It just -- I don't think
any human can do that.

It's -- it's -- yeah.

It's really, really painful.

Lindsey: Fire is
priority number one,

but I'm not super
helpful with that.

What do you think
our next priority is?

Should I try and
forage for some stuff?

That would be awesome.

Ooh. That's a big grub.

That's a lot of energy.

A bit -- a bit earthy.

Here's the raisin bush. Yes.

Not calorie dense, but
it gives that extra little bit

of vitamins that
we're losing every day,

and it's a nice, little,
sweet pick-me-up.

Well, how was the haul?

Couple raisins.

Narrator: Though rich in
calcium and magnesium...

I'm splitting them, yeah.

...Raisins will not replace

the energy luke and
lindsey have lost.

Luke: Fire's so
important for us right now.

Barely have any
calories in my system.

We had fire, we'd
be sleeping warm.

We'd be able to cook food.

I mean, it's
everything right now.

As far as cordage goes now,

if I cut a thin strip of
the kudu skin, make it --

might be durable
enough to get a coal.

No way that's breaking.

I don't think anything's
breaking that.

The big thing that's slowing
me down with my bow drill

is, you know, the
places I'm familiar with,

I know what grows there and
what I can use for materials,

and here, I'm kind of guessing,

try lots of different
combinations,

and you get smoke and
you can never get a coal.

How the [bleep]
is that not a coal?!

[ baboon grunts ]

I'm just really frustrated.

Well, I mean, I'm...Not --
not doing anything to help you.

I know.

I guess that frustrates me,
too, when you just watch,

and all the ideas
are coming from me,

and I just need you to,
like, start doing things

and not need my initiative.

You know what I mean? Mm-hmm.

we tried everything.

We've tried sinew and my
hair and skin from a kudu.

I know he feels that
pressure to get the fire,

and I just -- I wish there
was something I could do.

Fire is not my thing.

I get so hungry.

real damage to our bodies?

If we had a fire, it would help.

another night like that.

because it's really hard wood.

I tried for days and
days and days, you know,

and this is sort of my thing,

and I guess it was my
ego that was, you know...

You know, making me
think I should do better

and making me feel terrible
and a lot of guilt and shame and...

I'll remember this
moment for always.

Lindsey: We're just
hanging around the fire.

You can see luke is
enjoying the warmth.

Mm.

I'm just relishing in it.

Good.

Luke: Two humans that are
naked with limited supplies

and we're already
low on calories.

You know, the last
thing you want to do

is go chasing around
antelope and all that stuff.

There's just no way
we're gonna get those,

and so as sad as it is,

you got to be, you know,
opportunistic hunters.

[bleep]

this is life out here when
you're living like this.

Night 13.

Sitting by the fire
trying to stay warm.

[ grumbling ]

do you hear that?
Luke: I do hear that.

That's my tummy. Wow.

Uh, yeah. Meat would be good.

I'm trying to use the
strength of those back home,

and it's not gonna be easy.

Got a headache?

My eyes are really
sensitive to the light.

Narrator: After two weeks without
food, lindsey's body has begun

consuming muscle
tissue for energy.

Eventually, neurons
in the brain break down,

making it shrink,
causing debilitating pain.

Lindsey: Luke's a great
partner. I want to be here for him.

Physically, I
know I can do this.

I do. I know I can.

It's just the mental part.

I want to be with my babies.

I want to be with my husband.

So, I'm trying to
take it day by day.

Lindsey: Dreaming about food.

I know. It's killing me.

I can't -- my mind is,
like, racing about it.

Can't stop it.

It's [bleep] awful.

Narrator: Luke and lindsey
have gone almost three weeks

subsisting on raisins
and raw cactus.

With an exhausting trek to
extraction only four days away,

they need to find a more
substantial source of calories.

[ baboon calls ] hear that?

Narrator: After venturing
out in search of food,

luke and lindsey come
across a huge nest,

unsure of what may
be lurking inside.

Hang on. Let me get out
of the way a little bit more.

[ birds squawking ]

oh! Aah!

I'm grabbing it. I'm trying.

I have -- I have two.

Luke and lindsey have found
a nest of hammerhead storks --

very common to
the namibian desert.

The juveniles have
been in their nest

for approximately two months.

I got to get you. I'm sorry.

There's one that I bashed,

and he's under
that rock over there.

Yeah, I got him pinned.

Man, that's a treasure chest.

Here -- here comes another one.

[bleep] he hit the rock.

I see him.

I got one.

You got a bird? Yeah.

If you hold him by the
neck and kind of beat him --

just take his body and
whack against something.

I hit him pretty
good the first time,

so I probably could just snap.

You want him to be dead.
You don't want to torture him.

Okay.

[ bird chirps, crunching ]

lindsey: As a mother, this is
the hardest thing I've ever done.

Ooh, dizzy.

He's dead.

Ooh, hello.

It felt bad, but
this is a huge meal,

and I really appreciate
his sacrifice to us

and for our nourishment.

[ bird calling ]

we ended up
getting all five birds.

This is survival, and that
mama bird coming back

to find that all of
her babies are gone,

that just breaks my heart.

Mmm.

Oh.

Ooh. That's good.

That's -- that's rotisserie
chicken right there.

Oh, man.

Luke: I'm just so grateful.

Oh, yeah. That's the good stuff.

It feels so good to have this
much energy in our bodies.

We desperately
need this food in us

if we're going to
get to extraction.

Mmm.

Yeah? Mm-hmm.

Yeah.

Lindsey: You know, today,
having five birds is beyond amazing.

I hate that we're eating
them all in one day,

but we don't want
them to go to waste.

I can't believe
that. So amazing.

Being out here
makes you so thankful.

I always say, "you guys
need to thank daddy.

"he makes money.

He's out there working
hard so we can have a meal."

luke: Food paired up
with shelter, good weather,

fire, water still available.

I mean, it's just --
it's really allowed me

to appreciate this connection

with this beautiful,
beautiful land.

I would say this day
is the best one yet.

That's for sure.

You don't see any
thorns, do you?

It's not an option to make
it out of here without shoes.

We can't go anywhere.
There's thorns everywhere, so...

Yeah, to get to
the extraction point,

shoes are a must for us.

Here we are. Mm-hmm.

We have a long way to go.

Six or seven miles.

Narrator: To get
to their extraction,

luke and lindsey will have
to dodge the fierce sun,

grabbing shade where they can.

At the mercy of ambush predators

such as leopards and venomous
snakes lurking in the grass,

they will pick their way through
the thorn-filled landscape.

If they can make
it to this dirt track,

they will be rescued
by helicopter.

Lindsey: For extraction, to
walk such a great distance,

we've got to get our shoes done.

All right, you want to get
this guy back in the water?

The kudu hide has
firmed up, so I'm soaking it,

which will help me
mold it into a sandal.

We're using up the
last bit of kudu hide,

so I have to be really careful

that I don't screw
up these shoes.

Lindsey: She's not
pretty, but she'll do.

All right, let's see
how this goes.

It's pretty cool.

They look big now, but they'll
shrink a lot when they dry.

Luke: Lindsey did an
awesome job with these sandals.

She's really stepped
it up with her skills.

what I can to help the team

and making our way
towards the extraction.

ending on a high.

And a storm front
coming through,

so what the hell are
we gonna do about it?

Lindsey: We're in our
shelter, and it's not waterproof.

I'm soaking wet.

Luke: The river's
getting higher and higher.

Of course we didn't
grab our sandals.

They're floating down that
giant river somewhere right now,

so the night before, we were
supposed to start moving.

We've lost our sandals,
we've lost our fire.

Just pretty un-[bleep]-real
what just happened.

I doubt we're gonna make it.

Lindsey: What are you doing?

Why are you going in the water?

Luke: It's sterile.

"it's sterile." I wash
myself with that water.

No, you don't. I do!

do it for the next hour

and you'll be fine.

I wash my lady
bits and my armpits.

Narrator: Before they began
their 21-day survival test in namibia,

frustrating first week...

Lindsey: As soon as we heard
that helicopter, it was just joy.

Luke: I was definitely
humbled by this experience.

I think the biggest
takeaway from this

is growth through challenge.

Yeah, my frustration
might get the best of me,

but I've learned what I
need to work on with my skills

and what I need to
work on as a person.

Whoo!

We're done! We made it!

Lindsey: It was super
tough emotionally,

and being done is the
greatest feeling in the world.

That was us for three weeks.

Luke: Lindsey
really impressed me.

I think she found some
personal strength from within

that she didn't know she had.

I don't know if I would've
made it without her.

We did it.

He's the greatest partner
I could've asked for.

He's my brother now.

Narrator: Over the course of
the 21 punishing days in namibia,

luke and lindsey went through

significant mental
and physical changes.

Luke lost a total of 25 pounds,

and lindsey shed 15 pounds.

Based on their performance,
their psrs were reassessed.

Luke's frustration
at failing to make fire

threatened his
performance early on,

but his superb primitive
skills and leadership

proved to be invaluable
to their success.

It took a while for lindsey

to show how she could pull
her weight for the survival duo,

but her overall
compassion for her partner

kept them together
through trying times.

This raises lindsey's
psr from a 6.7 to a 7.1,

and luke improves to an
8.3, demonstrating once again,

it takes a special breed to
survive naked and afraid.

Lindsey: When
my kids are hungry,

I'm gonna just say, "go
kill something and eat it."

I'm trying to see survival
skills, and they're nowhere.
