in the morning air.

Like the season, life in Pig
Wood is on the cusp of change.

Grace, the farm's Berkshire
sow, is pregnant.

With as many as 12 piglets
on the way,

she's got a big appetite.

Today, she's tucking
into woodland nettles.

They're rich in iron to sustain
her and her growing babies.

Her pregnancy will
last for three months,

three weeks, and three days.

Grace hasn't got long to wait.

Her piglets should arrive
just in time for autumn.

The farm may be a
familiar setting,

but take a closer look,
and you'll

discover drama and rivalry,

friendship and devotion.

This is the farm animal's
story, seen through their eyes,

told across the seasons.

The Herefords are relaxing
in the grazing meadows.

But like all families, as the
long summer holidays drag on,

they're getting a bit
fed up with each other.

Even Samson the bull is tired
of all the female attention.

Scientists have discovered
that cows have what's

known as the explorer
gene, which drives

a desire for novelty
and adventure,

so these highly
intelligent animals

easily get bored if they can't
investigate new horizons.

Everyone needs a
change of scene,

and the herd has its
sights set on a neighboring

field, full of fresh grass,
all that lush, green goodness.

It could be just the
pick me up they all need.

Thankfully, help is at hand.

Pasture's new.

Even the bull has a
spring in his step.

Grass never tasted so good.

It's the final
feast of the season.

It won't be long before the
herd returns to the barn and
summer

is just a distant memory.

A variety of different
habitats make up

this 1,200-acre organic farm.

Here, countless
wild species live

alongside the farm's
prized pedigree animals

and rare breeds.

Among them are the Buff
Orpington chickens.

Throughout the summer,
tensions have

been running high between
Sally and bushy tailed Bertha.

Top hen Sally once ruled
the roost with an iron beak,

but going on
maternity leave left

a power vacuum in the coop.

Bertha was quick
to steal her crown.

Since Sally's return,
Bertha has been merciless.

The power in Hen House
has shifted.

Today, there's a
tasty autumnal treat,

and Bertha, as the new top hen,
is first to the feast.

She's joined by Big Joe,
the resident cockerel.

Everyone gets a beak
full, except for Sally.

Forced to play by
Bertha's rules,

she'll have to
wait for leftovers.

Fine, they can have
their pumpkin and eat it.

Sally doesn't need to
grace their table--

she's far more enterprising.

Her ancestors were Asian
jungle fowl who roamed over 13

acres a day looking for food.

There's a wonderful world out
there waiting to be discovered.

In Pig Wood, Grace
is busy preparing

a home for her
piglets, collecting

straw to make a nest.

But something's not right.

Her due date was
over a week ago.

Grace has had a miscarriage.

Her hormones are telling her
to keep preparing for babies.

But her emotions are saying
they no longer need her care.

Pigs are sensitive and
intelligent animals.

They're thought to experience
both grief and sadness.

No one knows what's going
through Grace's mind right now,

but she needs to
rest and recuperate.

Over in the barn where
some of the Herefords

have just come in
from the meadows,

an unexpected
visitor has swung by.

Sally the adventurous chicken
is on a voyage of discovery,

quite a surprise for
the pedigree cows.

But the farm is a big place,
and Sally's not sticking
around.

This chicken isn't
afraid to cross the road,

but what's on the other side?

Ah, the Hebridean sheep.

He seemed friendly enough.

Or are they?

Sally's never seen
anything quite like these

black woolly creatures before.

She shouldn't be too
worried by the sheep--

the farm is home to a
more serious threat.

[tense music]

The fox is on the prowl.

Maybe Sally should leg
it back to Hen House

before it's too late.

But hold on, which way is home?

She's trekked a long way.

It's turning into
quite an adventure.

[geese honking]

A familiar sound,
her noisy neighbors,

the Sebastopol geese.

Hen House is within reach.

Home at last, and Big Joe
is the first to greet her.

[romantic music]

Sally was once Joe's favorite
hen, until Bertha muscled in.

Maybe absence really does
make the heart grow fonder.

Jealousy is well known
amongst chickens.

Is Big Joe shifting
his affections?

Could Sally become
top hen once again?

Not if Bertha has
anything to do with it.

Fall is setting in,
bringing with it wet, windy,

and changeable conditions.

[calm music]

Even with waterproof wool,
the Wiltshire Horn sheep

head for cover.

Over in the chicken
coop, Bertha's

definitely having
a bad hair day,

but Big Joe doesn't
seem to mind.

Six-month-old Lola solves
the problem her own way.

It's dry, but not very roomy.

She'd rather be inside.

British Whites are
directly related

to the ancient indigenous
cattle that roamed the British
Isles

2,000 years ago.

They lived on the
fringes of forests

where they could seek
cover under the trees,

but this domesticated herd are
used to the comfy conditions

of a cozy barn.

It's time for Lola
and the other cows

to come indoors for the season.

Over in a neighboring field,
the rain isn't dampening the
mood

of Hamish, a Hebridean ram.

The shorter days of
autumn trigger the start

of the sheep's mating season.

Hamish is in his prime.

This confident ram is king of
all he surveys, which, for now,

is just an empty field.

He needs some
females to impress.

Could this be his lucky day?

He's ready for action.

But hold on, who's this?

Oh, it's Roger, a
Wiltshire Horn ram.

He's put in with Hamish as
a companion, not exactly

the harem he was hoping for.

And there can be only
one king of this field.

Hamish's surly swagger
speaks volumes.

He's not in the mood
to make friends.

Hamish sizes up his
opponent in a parallel

walk to gauge strength.

The fight is on.

[intense music]

Roger may be bigger, but
Hamish isn't backing down.

They charge at each
other at speeds

of up to 20 miles an hour.

Thick skulls with a
honeycomb-like layer

help them absorb the blows
and protect their brains.

Hamish is faltering.

Roger delivers
the decisive blow.

[calm music]

Hamish punched above his
weight, but for all his
bravado,

he's outclassed.

It's time to throw in the
towel.

Roger's licking is a
friendly gesture to show

there's no hard feelings.

With the winner
decided, these rams

will spend the next few weeks
living together in peace--

well, most of the time, anyway.

Over at the cow barns,
there's a hubbub of excitement.

From all across the farm, the
Herefords and British Whites

are coming indoors
for the season.

But first, a haircut.

Much like people removing their
coats when they come inside,

a quick trim helps the
cows adjust to the warmer

temperatures of the barn.

Lola is already under
cover, but she's

not thrilled about the setup.

For the first time in her
life, she can't get to mum.

She can still see and
communicate with her

through the gate, but Lola must
learn to live with her peers

and without her mother's
24-hour attention.

She's already showing
signs of independence.

Taking the lead, she's
the first of the calves

to stick her head in the
unusual new food tray.

It might seem like tough love,
but now Lola can enjoy bonding

with the other youngsters.

Then, next year, she'll
rejoin her mother

and the rest of the
breeding herd in the meadow.

As the days shorten
and autumn takes hold,

a magical transformation
occurs across the farm.

The ancient woodland
performs a final flourish.

As the trees shut
down, their leaves

stop producing chlorophyll,

revealing the color

of the chemicals
hidden within,

a flash of fall beauty

which lasts just a
few precious weeks.

Just across from
the barns, the ewes

and lambs of the Wiltshire
Horn flock

are still out in the fields.

The mothers are separated
from their lambs.

Devoted mum Patch can't get
to her twins Larry and Flora.

[bleating]

She calls out to them with
distinct sounds reserved only

for her little ones.

But there's nothing
more she can do.

[gentle music]

Patch, with all the other
ewes, is loaded onto a trailer

and taken to the furthest
reaches of the farm.

There, she'll eventually
meet Roger the ram who will

sire new lambs for next spring.

Larry and Flora are
still processing

what's just happened.

It's all over so quickly.

But it's not the end
of this difficult day

for the youngsters.

For some, their time
on the farm is over--

they're heading off to market.

Larry and Flora, however,
will be staying on the farm.

Flora will soon join
the breeding flock,

and Larry has a
very special job--

he'll be joining Roger and
Hamish as a companion sheep.

But without mom, life will
never be quite the same again.

Over in Pig Wood,
change is in the air.

Another Berkshire
sow is on the scene--

Sheila.

The locals aren't impressed.

Pigs like to know
their neighbors

and don't trust strangers.

They could be trouble
makers or carry disease.

So Sheila's got her work
cut out just to fit in.

After a suspicious start, her
friendly nature wins them over,

and they start chatting away
with a series of soft grunts.

[grunting]

But there's one pig
who's noticeably absent.

[upbeat music]

Grace is exploring the
nearby wildflower meadow.

It's a lovely, therapeutic
place to spend her time,

and she's doing well.

There are plenty
of tasty autumnal

delicacies in this field.

Tubers, and even insects, make
up her starter and main course.

But in the corner, she spots
something really special--

sloe berries.

Grace, like all pigs,
has a sweet tooth,

so saving the best for last,
she tucks into dessert.

With her belly full,
it's time for a siesta.

Nap over, she's come to
meet the new arrival.

Through their
sophisticated sniffers,

pigs can detect all
kinds of hormonal changes

in one another, and
Sheila has some news--

she's pregnant.

In the wild, female pigs
support one another.

Some put all their piglets
in a communal creche

and will share
babysitting duties.

Soon, Pig Wood will become the
perfect nursery for Sheila,

and it won't be long before
they all hear the pitter

patter of tiny trotters.

[calm music]

As temperatures fall, the
trees in the ancient woodland

prepare for the months ahead.

They shed their
leaves to protect

themselves from the freezing
temperatures and high winds

to come.

Beneath the thinning
canopy, a new kingdom

bursts out of the leaf litter--

the realm of the fungi.

The mushrooms and toadstools
are the visible fruits

of a vast, secret
underground network

which recycles the nutrients
delivered from above.

Even the farm animals seem
intrigued by the appearance

of these alien forms.

Now is the start of
the Fallow deer rut.

The males advertise
their virility

to the females in the hope
they'll get the chance to mate.

The seduction song is
music to a does ears,

but it's not to
everyone's taste.

Inside the barn, the
cows are settling

into their new surroundings.

Lola and the other
calves have been

physically kept apart from
their mothers during the day.

It's a gentle nudge
towards independence.

But dusk is a welcome sign.

[calm music]

Every night when the
gates are removed,

Lola is reunited
with her mother.

She's forging a
new path in life,

but she's still her
mother's daughter.

The familiar smell of each
other and a chance to suckle

is comforting.

It reaffirms the bonds
they developed at birth.

They can enjoy their
evening together

and hunker down to keep each
other warm through the night.

Across the farm, everyone
is preparing to bed down.

The rams Roger and Hamish
have forgotten their feud

and are enjoying a
late night feast.

In Pig Wood, Sheila's
getting some shut eye

while she still can.

The geese are staying up late,
but all is quiet in Hen House.

Sally's got one eye open on
the lookout for predators,

but she's still dozing.

Chickens have a rapid eye
movement phase of sleep

that signifies dreaming.

Maybe she's
imagining getting one

over on bushy-tailed Bertha.

For all the farms
residents, this will

be a particularly long night.

[serene music]

Sunrise reveals the
first frost of the year.

Inside the barns,
something's up.

The cows are grumpy.

Overnight,
the clocks turned back,

so breakfast is an hour late.

[mooing]

Upright ears and noisy calls
signify their displeasure.

[mooing]

Yeah, what time
do you call this?

Finally, breakfast is served.

Every day, their
bedding is refreshed,

and that hasn't arrived
on time, either.

[calm music]

Being indoors day in, day
out means getting fresh straw

to sleep on is very important.

As soon as the supplies
hit the ground,

the cows happily make their own
bed, turning it into a game.

Frolicking in the
straw is so much fun.

In a cozy corner of
the barn next door,

there's been a very
different delivery.

Sheila was brought indoors
to have her babies,

and she's given birth
to a healthy litter.

[serene music]

They're just a few hours old,
each weighing about a pound.

All are doing well.

The piglets are
already exploring

this strange, new
world around them,

testing out their wobbly legs.

They don't stray far
from mom just yet.

They're born with only
enough fat reserves

to survive for one day.

Taking their cue from
mum, they quickly

seek out their first meal.

Sheila lets her newborns know
it's dinner time by emitting

a deep grunt every two seconds.

[grunting]

Her first milk is
full of antibodies

to protect her youngsters
against disease,

and it's rich in fat
and vital nutrients.

It's a healthy and
tasty start to life--

if you can get a drink.

The largest and most
tenacious youngster

claims the teat
closest to Sheila's

head which has the best milk.

Dominance is determined
from this moment on.

The others latch
on where they can,

but the runt of
the litter, Bertie,

will have to fight
for her supper.

With eight brothers and sisters
all bigger and stronger,

she's got a challenge ahead
just to survive.

Finally, Bertie finds
a spot on the milk bar.

[uplifting music]

With bellies full,
they all cuddle up

together for a snooze,
sharing each other's warmth.

Mom, Sheila, takes the
chance to rest, too.

She'll have her work cut out
raising these nine little ones.

Winter is fast approaching,
bringing with it

cold days and longer nights.

As the last of the autumn
leaves are blown away,

the animals will
have to hunker down

in preparation for the
most hostile of seasons.
