of another part of the ship.

I bent to the task of removing
that delicate fuse.

The tools became literal extensions
of my surgeon-like hands.

The ticking continued.

How long did I have? A minute?

Suddenly, something gave.

A small door.

And then a discovery.

It was a Russian torpedo.

Now, at last, I was on somewhat
more familiar ground.

I suddenly felt
the ticking mechanism,

and while holding
the igniting lanyard screw,

removed it from
its destructive housing.

The ticking became louder,
but I was confident

that victory was not far off.

If I could get that fuse
safely out of the hold,

where my buddies
could throw it overboard,

the torpedo would be harmless.

Of course, there was a small charge
of explosives in the fuse itself,

but no real damage
could be done by that

once it was separated
from the torpedo.

Carefully, I carried it up to the hatch...

...and after looking briefly
for the other men...

...I put it in a safe and obvious place,
where they would be sure to find it.

I debated for a moment as to whether
I shouldn't warn them

that they may not have
too much time to get rid of it...

...but then decided
that would be unnecessary.

Besides, as I said, it contained
only a small charge.

I couldn't help thinking
of the happiness and relief

that must be running through the ship
at this very moment.

They had surely found
the fuse by now

and would be running
to congratulate me.

I didn't have long to wait.

There they were.

And I shall never forget
the looks of respect

and admiration on their faces.
