I live in Los Angeles, California.

I've grown up here
my entire life.

It's been
a pretty wild journey.

Linkin Park is a band that
mixes rock and roll

and, like, hip-hop.

Getting yelled at
by that as a kid was...

[chuckles]
That was the worst part

about getting in trouble.

I was born in 2002

and at that time Linkin Park
had already taken off.

They were already known
around the world and huge.

For me as a kid,
I didn't really understand

the reach that they had
on the world.

Right on.

Linkin Park is here in
Wroclaw at the stadium.

It took us four hours
to get here.

[vocalizing]

I mean, it was just my dad
and that was his job.

dig it deeper ♪

♪ Just to throw it away ♪

This is wild to me,
but Linkin Park has sold

70 million albums and
30 million singles worldwide.

What matters is sitting down

and making music that's gonna
ascend time.

And that's not gonna be easy or
else everybody would do it.

It was really cool to

watch him do what he loved

and have those experiences.

And MTV had a huge impact
on his career.

I wasn't even born yet,
but back in 2001,

my dad and his band Linkin Park

performed at the VMAs
for the first time.

Are you a little nervous
about performing a live show

such as the VMAs that's so big?

Uh, I mean, it's--

it's more exciting than,
like, nerve-racking.

I don't know
how he's not nervous.

I get nervous over everything.

I'm even nervous
on this interview.

[laughs]

All right, people.

This is an insane moment
for my dad.

Come on.

♪ ♪

So my dad would've taken
my mom to this event,

but she wasn't able to.

She was in bed rest
pregnant with me.

♪ About to break ♪

♪ 'Cause I'm one step closer
to the edge ♪

♪ And I'm about to break ♪

He brings just so much
energy to the stage.

That was, like, his happy place
for sure. For sure.

♪ All these thoughts,
they make no sense ♪

♪ I find bliss in ignorance ♪

♪ Nothing seems to go away ♪

♪ Over and over again ♪

♪ Just like before ♪

♪ Everything you say to me ♪

There's a funny, little
backstory about this song.

That the reason why Dad
wrote this song was because

they were hav--they were
arguing with their managers

and everything and
they weren't listening to him.

So...
[chuckles]

Then they wrote this song and

got the message pretty clear.

[laughs]

Not everybody plays
at the VMAs.

Like, that's such
a big milestone.

Like, that's crazy.

It brought them a ton
of new fans and longevity.

And I really think that

launched them forward
in their career.

I can't even, like, imagine

how big of a turning point
that was.

From there, that's when
things took off

and it got so crazy.

In 2002, the same year
that I was born,

my dad and Linkin Park
were nominated

for a bunch of VMAs
for their video "In The End."

And the winner of the best
rock video of 2002.

I am not gonna lie.

It is kind of cool that
they won the year I was born.

♪ But in the end,
it doesn't even matter ♪

I guess I was
a little luck charm.

- During my dad's career,

they won 25 MTV awards
in total,

which was pretty insane.
- Yeah!

His music is his baby,
you know?

He nurtured it and would
always show us the songs

that he was making before
they released and everything.

I got to see
a lot of the songs

going from their worst
kind of phases

to the best versions
of themselves too.

There are stories of, like,
my mom and dad, like,

putting me in, like,
the room where they're, like,

recording something
and if my foot would tap

then it would be,
like, a smash hit.

But if it didn't,
they were be like,

"Okay, we got
to redo this song.

"We got to figure it out.

How are we gonna
make Draven like it."

There's something about this
song that says hit.

[laughs]

If we could just
get Jay-Z on this track

it'd be big.

Nothing tops this appearance.
This one's my favorite.

It's a year before I was born.

This is my crib.

One of our first photo shoots.

We were all trying
to look really cool.

some pieces that I've done.

A lot of Dad's art
I've taken inspiration from

and he used to paint like
crazy all the time.

We like to have as much art
throughout the house

to kind of express
the type of people that we are.

I feel like that's
what I do all the time now,

so that's pretty cool.

Right now, I'm gonna take you

This is our favorite thing
in the entire house.

It's crazy to see Mom and Dad
so young.

That's crazy.

These wings over here

represent our
fourth anniversary.

We got married on Halloween.

We have those wings in
our living room right now.

We kind of decided
to dress up

last year for the first time.

Over here we have
my mom's wings.

He had to perform that night.

They decided to dress up
and have fun with it.

And that was a part of
my wife's lovely costume.

She was a fallen angel.

Where he dressed up
as a devil.

They were like,
"Okay, the show must go on.

We can't just stop
for our anniversary."

We'll move over here
to the closet.

Dad had thousands of pounds
of clothes.

My favorite item in here
are these pants I made

because I designed
these clothes

with a company called Replicant.

I have some of
Dad's old clothes.

So this jacket right here

is one of his jackets
that he made.

And they put, like,
all these little, like,

paint scuff marks around it.
It's really cool.

This was one of my dad's
flannels.

This was a part of
his quintessential style

and now they're making it
into my style too.

[laughs]

And now, I design
my own clothes too.

This is one of my jackets
that I've done.

It was really nice, like,
seeing just, like,

a video of, like,
my dad being happy.

It was a really healing video
for me to be watching.

In 2010, my dad
and Linkin Park

performed at the VMAs.

They did the surprise show at
the Griffith Observatory.

This one was fun.
I remember pretty much, like,

going there a few hours earlier
when it was still light out.

I had to be, like,
eight years old at that time.

Oh, there I am.
[laughs]

That's me and
my little brother.

Geez, this is so weird being
there and rewatching it.

It was so amazing
to watch the sun come down,

the lights go up.

This is his biggest moment
on MTV.

I skipped school the next day
because I was so tired.

I'm really proud of him
for that show.

That was such a fun one
and such a memorable one.

It was really cool
to have those experiences

and it was also hard
when I got older

when he was on tour and
I had to stay for school.

He would leave for,
like, long periods of time.

That part was difficult.

Besides that, like, he's my dad
and I loved him.

And we had
a great relationship.

♪ ♪

Linkin Park singer,
Chester Bennington,

has reportedly died by suicide
at the age of 41.

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda

confirmed the news
on Twitter saying...

So when my dad passed away,
I was 15 years old.

♪ ♪

I haven't watched
the full video before.

This is my first time.

♪ ♪

I mean, my dad's passing was

definitely the hardest thing
in my life.

Just everything has
definitely changed.

♪ Should've stayed ♪

♪ Were the signs I ignored ♪

I thought he was going to be
seeing me graduate high school

and, like,
have my first girlfriend

and everything like that.
And that never happened.

He was the glue
of the family.

Like, he kept us all,
like, together

and then I think we were all,
like, pretty lost without him.

What I do in my everyday
life to keep his legacy alive

is I do as much as I can
to make myself happy

with, like, my creativity
and passion.

It's got a very special
story to me.

It's actually been through

both my grandparents
and my dad.

My dad would play music for us
all the time in the car.

Not too long ago
when I turned 16,

my grandpa gave this to me,
so now it's been through

four generations.

My dad always had, like, all of
his passion into his work

and that's what
I aspire to do too.

So I am working on some
of my own music right now.

My sound is definitely more
hip-hop, more rap.

a feeling or, like, an energy.

Here's one of the first,
original pieces that I've done.

I'm not trying to follow
in the footsteps all the way.

I was born June 4, 1994.

My father joined Van Halen
shortly after I was born.

We're having quite a time
here at Radio City Music Hall.

And you are definitely
the new lead singer.

This is the new Van Halen.

To be asked to come up and
front the biggest rock band

in the world.
Like, that's insane.

When I was a kid, my first
day in, I think, second grade

all these kids were, like,
asking me about my dad.

And a bunch of people were
trying to be my friend,

but, like, that was the moment
when I realized

that my dad was something else.

You know,
I'm the typical kid,

but my dad's
not the typical dad.

[laughs musically]

I grew up with a very normal
lifestyle with my mom

and a very abnormal lifestyle
with my dad.

It was like a double life.

When I'd go visit my dad

it would be, like,
all this crazy stuff.

It was wild.
I had, like, some of

my first, like, sexual
experiences on the road.

It's like being a part
of, like, a pirate crew

with all of
the colorful characters

you would expect to come
with that kind of world.

I think my dad was

the perfect front man

for Van Halen because

he was a wild man.

A lot of times I'm on stage
and I look at them.

I'm going,
where in the hell's Sammy go?

And he's God damn upstairs

He's been telling me
since I was kid that

that was, like,
all he ever wanted was

basically to be, like,
a super star.

[indistinct speech]

More than anything,
he just wanted to elevate

himself out of the extreme
poverty he grew up in.

He started playing music
at a young age.

I remember I think he said
he stole a guitar

from, like,
a Sear's department store.

He did anything and everything
he could to get over.

Van Halen is still to this day

one of the highest selling
rock bands of all time.

Yeah, the '91 VMAs.

♪ ♪

Got to headline the VMAs.

Probably a lot of emotions
going on here.

- You guys nervous?
- You know, it's scary

playing on TV because,
you know, a lot of people

just have one little speaker...

Trying to get Van Halen.
You got one little speaker

can be tough.

Yeah, the VMAs were
basically brand-new

and after my dad
came into the band,

that was their first time
performing on live TV.

So for my pops, it's
a pretty--pretty big moment.

Van Halen performed
one of my favorite songs

from the Van Hagar era:
"Poundcake."

This is why people
love Van Halen.

And you got to bust
a power drill.

The '90s gear everybody's...

God, in '91, I think my dad
had already started dating

the person that would go on
to become my stepmom,

so things were a little...

was such a powerhouse.

And the performance...

- Before Van Halen,

my dad had a pretty big impact

on pop/hard rock
as a solo artist.

This is the iconic
"I Can't Drive 55" Ferrari.

The police got to shut off
the road and I got to

take this thing flat out
to 180 miles an hour.

And your ass is five inches
off the ground

when you're sitting
in that car.

The concept for "55,"
I actually wrote myself.

♪ One foot on the break
and one on the gas ♪

♪ Hey ♪

And it's almost true to life.
[chuckles]

So it's funny.
My pops has always talking

about these crazy stories
about speeding and I guess

I'm a chip off the old block
in more ways than one.

And I got pulled over
by this cop.

You know, he asked me for
my license and registration

and I gave it to him.

♪ Go on and write me up
for 125 ♪

And in my mind I had this
moment 'cause I never

tell people that
I'm related to my dad.

But I remember my dad
always told me,

"Hey, if you ever need to get
out of, like, any kind of

"situation with a speeding
ticket, you just drop my name.

"And most of the cops are
hip to it 'cause of

'I Can't Drive 55.'
They'll probably let you walk."

♪ Post my face,
wanted dead or alive ♪

Think of the prototypical,
like, California State Trooper.

This was the guy.

He goes, "Hagar, huh?
You related to Sammy?"

And I'm like,
"Yeah, he's actually my dad."

♪ I can't drive ♪

♪ 55 ♪

And he got this weird grin
on his face.

This guy goes, "You know,
you're not gonna believe this,

I pulled your dad over."

This is a terrible story.

People are gonna be
mad at me for this.

I was driving, like,
about 150 miles an hour

and he was right back here
in this little cubbyhole.

- [laughs]
- In his car seat.

He didn't even see Andrew
in the back in the car seat.

I was like, "Oh, did you
give him a ticket?"

He goes,
"You're fucking right I did."

And then he walked off
and wrote me up.

And I was like, I can't believe
this shit right now.

The one time I try to pull this
card I get totally fucked.

Oh, man, winning an award
on MTV is

probably one of the best things

that could happen to you
as a band.

The biggest moment on MTV
for Van Halen

was the '92 VMAs.

to the usual Van Halen thing.

The message thing that
was going on now.

Yeah. It brings up some
important issues

that are really kind of what
makes us most proud

because for the ultimate
party band, Van Halen, right?

To all of a sudden be not only
accepted but, you know...

Also kind of acknowledged.

It kind of gives you
encouragement to maybe

think a little more
and not just go out and

pull your pants down
every night, you know?

You guys were all keyed up,
ready to go.

You guys always had
good interplay.

The director to make the video,
he gave us a story board

and it had all these messages.

It had never been done.

had a message.

A tuning into the moment,
the Zen.

biggest songs he's ever done

and I mean, it's still

I started playing music
when I was younger at school,

but it took me a long time
before I actually

started performing on my own.

Growing up in a musical family,

just seeing all those things
for what they were.

Not any of the fluff
that you might think

from seeing it
from the outside.

That was really important
because my expectations

were kind of more realistic

when I actually
did start doing it.

And then I started developing
my sound more.

We put together a full-length
record under my own name

and I'm really, really happy
with the result.

I mean, I wrote all the lyrics.
I've released one single.

It's called
"Red Light Appetite."

When I wrote that song,

I was talking about being kind
of in the throws of addiction.

Most people that come from
famous families

have a tremendously
difficult time

building their own identity

and figuring out
really who they are.

And a lot of times you end up
self-medicating

and there's tons of crazy
stuff that comes with that.

I think the Hagar legacy musically

is certainly about quality,

longevity, hard work.

Nothing came easy for me and it
ain't gonna come easy for you.

Yeah. I mean, I think one of
the best qualities I got

from my old man is just,

This guy literally
came from nothing.

You know, sleeping on
dirt floors to being

one of the best rock stars

in the history of,
you know, rock and roll.
