for fictitious underage girls,

each living unrelated lives
in different cities
across the country.

Let me ask you this,
can you take this
eyebrow and just...

eliminate a little bit
of the arch that's reading
a little bit too old?

The team members
are experts in
photo-retouching, social media

and online research.

This is clearly
a burner account.
Zero followers.

[Roo] I know that a night
like tonight, every aspect
of what we do matters.

So, Flori's
quite popular on Instagram.

We're doing
a really good job of
getting her verified,

making people believe
that she's real
and getting her in there.

She has been
contacted by someone,

he's an older man.

[Roo] In order to protect
the identities of those
who find this online,

we give them each a pseudonym.

This man will be called Kevin.

[Shelby] This is,
"Hi, Flori, you're gorgeous,"
"Thank you."

They chitchat
just a little bit.

She lets him know
she just moved to Stamford,

he, you know,
"This is a nice town."

And then sends
a photo of himself.

Boop-boop. You see it?
Everyone sees it?

Mmm.

[Roo] Adults preying
on minors online

continues to be
a growing concern.

Adults send nude images,

coerce minors
into sharing explicit material

and groom them
to meet for sex.

Most perpetrators
go unpunished, and so
they're not fearful of the law

because they don't think
anyone's, one, reporting it,
and two, able to find them.

And then he asks,
"Would you like get together?"
"Would you like to go out?"

Um, and Flori, to kind of
push again
that she's quite young,

you know, she says,
"I'm too young to get a drink
but I'd love to eat."

[Roo] He clearly
knows the law.

He says,
"You would need to be 16."

-Right.
-Flori's feigning
a little, uh, ignorance,

and saying, "Oh wait, why?"

And then he, sort of,
deflects and says,
"We can still grab some food."

Seems like he's laying out
his intentions pretty quickly,

-And he's local.

two minutes of talking.

This man is clearly
looking for sex.

that contacts
one of our personas

is explicitly told

from the outset,

that they're speaking to
a 15-year-old girl.

And it takes our entire team
to sustain that belief.

A persona is a decoy,

a fictitious character.

In the house, we've set up
three bedrooms belonging
to three teenage personas,

Nola, Alex and Floribeth.

When we create a persona,
it's like we're creating
a person out of thin air.

The hair color and eye color
really do look different.

She looks different.

And we've spent time
building what
a teenager's life might be.

So they have family
and friends and hobbies.

We have to create
her community as well.

So, we're creating
a background, a history.
Where she goes to school.

Does she takes piano lessons?

Authenticity is in details.

This girl's not just
a TikTok queen.

This is crazy embarrassing.

So, who are they
in their downtime when
no one else is watching them?

is half Filipina,
she's half-white.

Her mom is a nurse,
they've recently
moved from Brooklyn.

We purposefully made Floribeth

really emotionally fragile.

She's never
known her dad, really.

We put in our due diligence
when we made these characters
real girls

because they have to be.

In my head I'm going,
"Have you aged out of this?"

Maybe you can no longer
pull off a high voice."

or "Maybe you're out of touch
with teens."

And no one's

all of the key things

that would take place
for age regression, so,

anything that shows

since we're trying to make her

Appearing on a video chat

builds an essential
level of trust

and allows me the opportunity
to gain information
to discover their identity.

that's a lot younger
than you are.

and the predator end of it,

it's unfortunate for
a lot of families
but that's our job

and that's what
we're here for,

to take these guys
off the street.

Would this be enough to
get a warrant
to search his phone,

or his computer or his home?

All you need is
a probable cause.

But... but we just
don't know who he is.

We don't know who he is.

Once we ID him,
pretty much the investigation
starts rolling.

So, once we get
a search warrant,

we can go in,
we can search his house,

take his phones, any tablets,
computers, see where we
turn up with that.

But, this particular guy
right here,

there is no doubt in my mind
that he's a seasoned predator.

more information
about his identity.

that is crucial,

every time that you're talking
to an ACM,
an Adult Contacting Minor,

is the way that you're
gonna be engaging
in speaking with them.

every little detail,

am not very, like,

versed on all the intricacies
of each persona.

The only thing he knows
about her so far is like,
her mom left,

lives with her aunt,
because Dad moved in
with a girlfriend.

I came in today and I had
50 chat requests.

It can be tricky
when someone's asking you
rapid-fire questions,

trying to figure out
if you're real or not.

And they wanna know, like,
"How much do you weigh?"
"How tall are you?"

"Where do you actually live?"
"What's your sign?"

"When you were born?"
"What's your birthday?"

We're not using a
16-years-old hashtag anymore
for her, right?

Instead of hashtag junior,
I've been saying

hashtag freshman,
hashtag 15 years old.

Like most teen girls,
these personas have the same
username across the board.

If I say that
I'm a Capricorn on Reddit,

I've gotta make sure
I'm always saying

I'm a Capricorn
in all my other platforms.

When I mentioned, you know,
"I'm 15, is that okay?"
They replied,

"Yeah, why not?"

or sweatpants.

He knows
he's committing a crime

and he knows the punishment
can be severe if caught.

an ACM gives us

But what we've learned
about Kevin isn't adding up.

and he owns property

he owns an apartment building.

I think he mentioned
a couple of houses.

Um, he owned
19 car dealerships.

He has a brother,
he's not currently married.

[Shelby] We're hoping that
given these small facts
that he keeps peppering in,

we'll be able to
find something.

I just want a big list
of all the personal details
he's given.

I think if we see it
all together, we could see
how things connect.

[Shelby] He's told us
how long he's owned his house,

how many trees he's planted.

To what capacity
all of that is true
is all up for debate.

Honestly, what it
comes down to is,

all of this information
we have,

we still don't have
this guy's name.

We still don't know who he is,

we've searched via
his dog's name and
we've looked at property

and we still
don't have enough.

He's asking for a photo
of my feet.

[Roo] One of the most
challenging parts
of what we do

is submitting to
a perpetrator's demands.

But, in order to get Kevin
on another call,

we decide to comply.

any retouching?
-I don't know, does it?

Not really, those look like
15-year-old feet.

And the next morning
a concerning new ACM
reaches out to Flori.

He's claiming to be 50.

He looks like
he's at least 60.

What's interesting
is that his display name

seems to be a first name
and a last name.

So, I am going to
look it up and see
if I can actually find him.

It is not a fake name.

I have an address

and a landline.

So, this tactic that
he's using is what we call
the "white knight" tactic.

They start-off by saying
"The Internet is
a scary place,

you have to watch out
for bad guys. But not me."

It's a way for them to get
a teenager to trust them.

[Roo] He just sent
naked photos to Flori,

who he knows is 15.

He knows it's a crime.

And he just does not care.

Mitch's name
and nude photograph

are all we need
to turn his case
over to the authorities.

Later that night,
15-year-old Flori

receives a new, much more
disturbing request from Kevin.

-Hey, Shelby?
-Yeah.

Shelby.

Kevin is asking to meet
at a hotel.

Oh, it's...

15 minutes away.

He's got a hotel
in his back pocket.

He said,
"I'll be in the room with
my bag of tricks." And so,

I said, "What bag of tricks?"

[Shelby] And we've made it
abundantly clear

that Floribeth is 15,
just turned 15 in December.

[Roo] We have a meet
in an hour and 20 minutes.

I'm gonna get ready as Flori.

[Roo] We can't hand over
evidence to law enforcement

until we have a positive ID.

A name and an address.

We do this with
one goal in mind,
and in this case with Kevin,

the goal is not to make
an arrest tonight,

the goal is to get
an ID on him.

We're gonna be, hopefully,
grabbing plates from that
in the parking lot.

And Mark is gonna be
my Uber driver.

Posing as a ride-share driver
allows detective Suda,
our consultant,

to monitor a meet-up
without suspicion.

I think the reason why it
means so much to me is because

it can happen
so quietly and sneakily.

A child can be alone
in her room and parents
can be downstairs

and someone in a house
seven states away

could be sexually abusing her

via her phone.

I did a series of videos
online about

online sex abuse and how

it's never a victim's fault.

And these adults are tricky
and sneaky and manipulative.

The comments I got,
blew me away
and broke my heart.

And it was,
"I could've used you
when I was 12."

"Nobody told me
this in school."

"I've dealt with shame of this
since I was 13."

"I figured since it was
online it wasn't real."

I remember
a couple people asking,

"Can you create a video

as a mom,

[voice falters]
telling me that
it wasn't my fault?"

All they wanted was a mom.

All I wanted was a parent.

All I wanted
was an adult to say,

"What happened to you
was not your fault."

The work we do might not
seem like enough on most days.

But when we think about
how much damage
one perpetrator can do

to a child
or multiple children

and the long-lasting
effects that it can have,

then...

that's enough.

[Roo] Our ACM, Mitch,
continues to contact Flori.

So, we continue to gather
evidence against him.

I think Mitch thinks that
he will never get caught.
