It was Bruce Springsteen's Australian tour that year

and emotions were running high.

In 1985, USA for Africa produced the song We Are The World

to help raise funds for the famine in Ethiopia.

It was a huge success.

Tower Records claim it is the biggest selling single for years

and years and years within a week and in fact,

it will probably go to number 1 by 2 weeks time.

So that is quite amazing and to think all that money,

like the Band-Aid money, is going to go into Africa.

So, well done.

In addition, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure

organise the two Live Aid concerts

that were broadcast simultaneously around the world.

A TV event unprecedented in live music broadcasting.

REPORTER: The Australian band INXS were beamed live

from the Sydney Entertainment Centre into Wembley

as part of the global satellite link up.

So, too, for a short while was Molly Meldrum,

Geraldine Doogue, and George Negus.

This is the ultimate that pop music can do,

quite literally, it is the ultimate.

You can't do anything more after this

and the commitment of pop music need never be doubted again.

Alarmingly for British music at the time,

very few young acts were invited to play at Live Aid.

One exception was multi- instrumentalist Nik Kershaw.

In 1985, Nik also played on Countdown.

I am indeed ready.

From 1982, British pop bands had ridden the New Wave to America

and dominated the US charts.

♪ But now she never seems the same

Some believed this was due to them bringing colour

and energy back to pop music.

♪ Highly strung Oh, highly strung, she's undone. ♪

Others had a different theory.

English music becomes safe and boring.

All the British groups they like are absolute crap.

People like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet,

who are meaningless garbage,

and Americans like meaningless garbage.

Either way, by '85 the second British invasion had peaked

and the new American superstars Michael Jackson, Prince,

and Madonna were just doing bigger much better than the Brits.

(SINGS INDISTINCTLY)

Also knocking the Brits off the pop podium were rock metal bands

who'd mastered the music video

and we're beginning to write more melodic catchy singles.

Yeah, I remember when I was back in about third or fourth grade,

I was about 10 years old or 11 years old,

we were already Beach Boys.

What we were looking forward to was the British invasion

and now that the British invasion is over...

we have come full circle, man.

We're right back.

I'm getting bugged driving up and down the same old strip.

By 1985, it was the Americans riding high on a new wave.

♪ She was hangin' on Johnny, he was holdin' on tight

♪ There was no use talking, there was nothing to say

In mid-'80s Australia, the clubs still held the ascension over pubs

as the testing ground for new hits.

The Australian bands emerging from the club scene

were as accomplished as any in the world.

And Sydney band Koo De Tah

seemed to find the perfect combination

of new instrumentation for electronic dance music.

Live Aid had engaged a new generation in world issues.

Unrest in the political scene in the UK

had given rise to a new generation of protest singers.

Of unemployment? MOLLY: Yeah.

I don't see how you can ever truly change it under capitalism,

or under the capitalist system.

I mean, I think the only way

you're ever going to stop unemployment permanently

is by a socialist economy and a socialist system.

If you believe this, I've come all the way to Australia

just to introduce this program.

With the sheer number of female singers

and musicians breaking through in the mid-80s, it was inevitable

that gender politics would enter the musical realm.

♪ They've been to places I've never been

♪ Life's too short to enter the rush

MOLLY: Have you found it hard to be accepted as an all-girl group?

I mean, it's run by a very chauvinistic, I imagine,

recording industry.

That's true. We ignore them.

We do what we do and we do the best we can,

and we are doing well and things are progressing for us

so we don't let ourselves get bogged down in male chauvinism.

But if people end up listening to our music

because they are male chauvinists

and they like the fact that we are girls,

I don't care how they get to the point where they hear the music

if they like it.

It was the Grammys or the AMA awards last year

you made an appearance and you came out and did,

Was it "Who's that Girl?"?

No, Sweet Dreams and Annie came out with sideburns and black...

I think it took virtually the whole song before people realised.

I was very tired

of being courted as the androgynous Annie Lennox

and so I thought I would play a nice trick

and just become a man for a change

and really bring that media hype up to its fullest peak.

Rock music has always been at the seat of controversy

and when it starts to become part of the status quo,

it loses that dangerous edge,

so Dave and I were making a stand for something

that was a little bit more unorthodox.

A little bit dangerous.
