And politics in the '80s would be fought on new battlegrounds.

Determined conservative governments overseas seemed to foster,

in spite of themselves, even more determined countercultures.

It was the year that we'd learned

that we could dance if we want to

and to pass the dutchie on the left hand side.

The McNugget was launched and Cabbage Patch Kids were cuddled.

New technology was putting new sounds

at the fingertips of young musicians.

The Cold War was at its height

and many experts warned that nuclear war was a real possibility.

Politics found its way into the music of the day.

Mass media, government, like Khartoum,

Ron Reagan being president,

so people don't realise that in order to have freedom,

they have to think about it and fight for it every day.

A Sinking Ship. I mean, is there any symbolism?

It's like Margaret Thatcher's Britain.

Margaret Thatcher's sort of sinking Britain, I think.

Destroying the place.

In what way?

Well, she's making it...

turning it into a cold, right-wing, horrible country,

where it's the survival of the fittest.

And if you're poor and unemployed and that, I mean,

what does she care?

And we're still torturing people in prisons

and things like that.

There's plenty of things. Punk is a protest movement.

Maybe not quite as sensational now as it was five, six years ago,

but it's very necessary

because there's plenty of things to protest about.

Countdown featured many politically aware bands

prepared to make statements.

Alongside rock and pop,

Countdown had always supported dance music and the club scene.

'83 saw the rise and rise of Michael Jackson,

from Moonwalk to Thriller.

On the American charts,

this particular guy and the picture disc is now out in Australia,

is Michael Jackson, and he's had four, I think,

yeah, four singles on the American charts

and they just keep coming, alright?

One of the biggest movies of the year

gave rise to one of the biggest dance crazes -

Flashdance.

Countdown ran its own Flashdance competition.

Michael Sembello, one of the key songwriters for the movie,

performed on the show.

But the biggest Flashdance star to appear on Countdown in '83

In 1983, a bunch of '70s acts proved they still had it.

David Bowie dropped in to Sydney to explain his latest incarnation.

Uh, is there any pressure on you when you have to come down

and make the decision to do a new album?

No, I've always written to please myself,

so whatever seems to be happening around me,

it's sort of a pleasant background, really.

The music that I've written for the new album,

I've gone back to a lot of the R&B things that I used to listen to.

Right.

Now, the title track is called Let's Dance,

which is a very danceable track.

Yeah.

When and where did you write that?

Again, in fact, lyrically,

the thing has a lot more to do with Heroes

than it has to do with disco lyrics.

There's a desperation behind the lyric.

It's almost sort of a last dance.

It was going to be called Last Dance at one time,

but I changed it to Let's Dance.

Oh, that's better. Come on.

Come all this way to get a sun tan, it's a cloudy day.

It is a cloudy day.

It's been hot earlier on, though.

Bonnie Tyler's career took a successful U-turn.

I described you at one stage as being the female Rod Stewart,

if you remember. Yeah.

And that was with the big number one...

It's a Heartache.

It's a Heartache, right.

Well, it was a good song.

I mean, it sold nearly eight million copies worldwide,

so it was a good song.

I liked that and I also like Lost in France,

but then after that...

Did it typecast you, you think?

Yeah, because, you know, from there on, I didn't progress at all.

It was just a lot of It's a Heartaches over again,

which nobody was really interested in.

And I wasn't happy singing them anyway.

I wanted to do the kind of songs that I was happy with

and when I decided, you know, I needed to make this change,

I thought, "Well, if people like it, great."

"But if they don't like it,"

"at least I'm doing something that I'll be enjoying."

And I enjoyed every minute of making the album. It's terrific.

And Countdown favourites Dragon

were back with one of the songs of the decade.

First of all, congratulations on Rain.

You must be delighted. Thank you.

Perth has still got to start moving a bit with this single.

Perth is see-sawing.

Yeah, and I'm sure it'll go back...

As I said, it could go back to number one.

In fact, it's number one where? In Melbourne this week?

It's number one on three stations in Melbourne.

In Sydney, I think it's two or three.

Fantastic.

When you recorded, I know you all hoped to have a hit,

did you think that it would be this big, Marc?

I didn't.

I thought it would be great if it got to top 20,

but then, I can't pick any songs.

I thought April Sun in Cuba would get maybe in the top 20,

I don't know. I don't have a commercial ear.

It's been an amazing, I think, comeback by the group.

Because it's not often a group that splits up

can do this sort of thing.

We're quite amazed. We're very happy.

What's happening now in our concerts

as opposed to a year ago, the place was swarmed.

It was like kindergarten with kids.

There are more adults there, now.

Particularly, I think, because of the girls.

The girls are wearing less and less clothing.

Although pop music has always preferred its women underdressed,

many female performers used Countdown

to help forge their own identities.

Australian rock music was by no means dead.

Some of the stalwarts, such as Men at Work,

were enjoying sweeping success.

Welcome home, little vegemites.

On the subject of Down Under,

it's number 14 on the charts this week

and Business as Usual is number 10.

The record that wouldn't die! Exactly.

We've been trying to kill it for a while.

But there was no doubt that Oz rock, as played by the purists,

was under pressure to perform.

It's been such a week. I think I'm still a bit fazed.

Parramatta winning the grand final in Sydney.

Hawthorn winning it in Melbourne.

And, of course, a great victory by Australia too

on early Tuesday morning with the America's Cup,

and we've got a dreadful admission to make, Alan Bond -

we've nicked the cup, we really have.

Well, how about that, eh?

On behalf of Michael Jackson and Serious Records,

I would like to present this to you and to Countdown.

This particular jacket, would you believe,

you can put a Walkman in there and the earphones are here.

So instead of having the earphones cruising down the street

or on your rollerskates or on your bike, whatever,

you can hear it through, would you believe, your collar.

It's crazy, I know.

They're printing things in the newspapers

about gourmet things with Vegemite in it.

For all the Australians, it's hysterical.

But they're selling them in quite a lot of shops.

So what's your shop called?

It's called Koala Blue.

Koala Blue.

And Koala stands for 'corner of Australia in LA'.

Like that name? Yeah.

Advances in recording technology made it more economic

for musicians to start building their own studios.

Bigger was not necessarily better.

We invested all our money from our record company

and bought ourselves an eight track studio,

and that's where we made this album.

And we've been working on that album for the past nine months

in a warehouse in Camden Town.

Made it ourselves, wrote it ourselves, produced it,

arranged it, recorded it, engineered it, everything.

And Sweet Dreams has done incredibly well in this country.

Our philosophy was after we'd had the experience

of being in a group with five people, same people,

getting fed up with it, that small was beautiful.

And so what we did was we decided

that we would have control over everything that we did.

So as a matter of fact, that particular video was written by us,

mainly by Dave, actually.

He has a flair of that kind of thing.

And co-directed by him.

So in this way, we're able to kind of really have a lot of control

over what comes out

and I think it's the best way for us, works very well.

Independent bands were beginning to challenge

the viability of their commercially legit counterparts.

Yeah, we're going to have hits and it's going to be very pure.

Quite righteous.

It's going to be young music controlled by young people

and sold to a young audience.

And it was seen very much as an alternative.

We picked up on that and marketed ourselves quite aggressively.

And we've had hits on Polydor.

You have talked a lot, I'm telling you.

(BOTH LAUGH)

Yeah, actually, I'd forgotten the question.

Australian indie bands were also starting to make inroads both at home

and especially in the Old Dart.

In Australia, we've done just about all that we had to do

and the offer came through and we decided to take it

because there's just so much to do over here.

Even the stage that we're at in Australia is equivalent to here,

but there was just so much more work to do.

There was more opportunity. MOLLY: Right.

First of all, who made the decision to release the single?

We did. Right.

And it was a song written by Grant.

And we just chose that single because it was so unique.

Everything about it was unique.

The rhythm and the melody.

And the lyrics, I might add, too.

Yeah. We're in a situation in the studio

where we recorded 10 songs for the album

and all of the group felt that it was the best single,

and the producer thought it was the best single,

and we're extremely confident about it.

1983 was a year of experimentation.

New instruments,

new markets,

new fashions, anything,

as long as it was new and shiny.

We like a lot of different kinds of music like Cajun music,

which is from the swamps around New Orleans,

which black French geezers do.

And we like high life music

and we're sort of quite interested in lots of African music

and the way European music affects Africans.

Like, you would get African playing an African song

and he'll just burst into a heavy metal guitar solo.

Stuff like that.
