ANNOUNCER: Welcome to Classic Countdown, 1982.
♪ Countdown! ♪
SHANE: Some developments made life a little brighter in 1982.
Firstly, we all started working out.
Then we learned we could just as easily work out at home.
Invading aliens from outer space turned out to be friendly.
And life was simply better
because the saxophone was back in a big way.
We got our first look at an indestructible new technology.
And here it is, the compact disc.
It's a marvellous little thing. It's a laser disc.
You can see the sort of laser colours in it.
Because it's laser cut, you can sort of finger it.
You can sort of scratch it, and everything like that,
and it will not impair the sound.
A federal election wasn't far off,
so we also started to face some facts.
ABC reporters in their conversations
with caucus members at the conference
have concluded Mr Hawke has a better chance
than he has so far been given.
But Mr Keating's undecided.
REPORTER: It was the biggest demonstration
since the days of the Vietnam moratorium marches.
But it looked like two big issues would be
the environment and rights for indigenous people.
What do we want? Land rights!
When do we want it? Now!
Of course, sporting events would provide
the usual distraction from too much thinking.
In 1982, the Americans sent the big guns to Countdown
to remind us who invented rock'n'roll.

was synth pop.
There's a big movement in England
that they're trying to force a lot of American music on us,

That got into the top ten in Britain
and that was only because in the main pop program
on British television,
they've got five minutes that's devoted just to American music.
