- So here we are at the beginning of the project,

our surveyors provided us a

DWG of the survey of the property,

or the owner

has provided us a PDF of their building

and we need to get that into

a three dimensional kind of space,

we are going to talk about the virtual trace.

So if you go up to window,

and you go to

palettes,

and then you go to

and Reference,

so let's just click on that. So it opens up this dialogue.

And if you use trace paper, it's very similar.

So what I like to do is

I'm going to just put this over below my navigator,

you can scroll over to

what you want to trace.

So let's just trace the survey for now.

So if I click on this,

and I can say show as a Trace Reference,

it is going to pull up the survey.

And because it's little far away,

so it's way up there.

And it looks like the layers are off.

So let's go back.

And let's go to our layers,

let's just turn on all of our layers.

And so there it is,

it's a little far away from where we're going to be drawing.

So let's just bring it closer, we have these options,

so we can switch the reference. So if I click on this,

it switches between an active and an inactive.

So right now, we're on the survey,

and what's below us is first floor,

or what's being traced.

So if I click that, again,

we can see that the survey is being traced

and the active area that we're in is the first floor.

So we can see this is a little far away.

And so we have a few different options,

we can drag the reference, we can rotate the reference,

we can reset the reference to its default position,

we can rebuild the reference,

maybe the references change or you've updated that file,

we can change the colour of the reference

and the opacity of the reference,

we can also change what the active layer looks like

or the active area that we're working in.

So let's just do this. Let's change it to

red so we can see it. There it is.

And now let's just drag this down.

So I clicked on move.

And I'm going to move it closer

to the origin of where I'm working.

And so now if I zoom in, and I'm just scrolling in,

I can see that it's a little bit off,

I might want to move it over a little bit more.

So I'm going to click on it again move,

and I can move it closer to where I'm working.

And at the bottom,

we have a couple options that allow us

to visualize it a little bit better.

So we can temporarily move it, maybe something's in our way.

And we want to kind of get it out of the way

so we can see what's going on.

But once we let go, it moves back,

we can also move it so that the reference

is on top of the information that we're looking at.

But it's still a reference. So you can see what happens is,

if I push this reference above button,

it moves it from back to front.

So it's kind of a layering in a way or a ordering.

Um and then we also have this ability.

So I'm going to turn this off.

And then we have the ability to bring a splitter down

so we can look at information

and see what's behind it.

And so that works on both of them.

So if I put the reference on top, the reference goes away.

And if I do it the other way, the above information,

or the active information goes away.

And then we also have the ability to hide fills.

So if you have a fill either in the reference

or in the active, then you can hide that.

And so this provides is a great opportunity to say okay,

well I can still snap, or I can touch these elements.

And I can quickly draw over it.

So just going to show you a quick example

of why this is such a powerful tool,

I have selected the wall tool.

you can trace it. So it allows for a lot of efficiencies

or when you're coordinating with other disciplines.
