hi there and a very warm welcome to this video series

on plugin boutique's scaler two

my name's larry holcomb

aka get to know

and i'm really excited to be delivering this video

series for groove three on this amazing plugin

now this is just a super useful workflow tool

that allows you to have music theory at your fingertips

without having to go through

a full classical music education

so such a powerful tool

okay so in this first video

we're going to have a look at the three ways

in which we can load up an instance of scaler two

to achieve different goals

and also we're going to have a look at the interface

so from the outset

we're aware of what everything is called

and where it's located

so let's dive straight in

so the first way we can load up skeletor

is as an instrument

now i'm demonstrating this in logic

so refer to the documentation of your own daw

to find the equivalent

functionality within your own daw

so this is the instrument workflow with skater two

so we load it up as an instrument

and we can use

the sounds that are built into the plugin

so you can see

we've got all these different options to choose from

pretty cool

now obviously

we can go through and create our chord progressions etc

but the kind of message of this is that

this allows us to actually use the built in sounds

from skater two

now let's change this to

let's say an electric piano

now the next way we could use it

is as a midi effect plugin

so we'll load it up from here

now this allows us to control the sounds of

in this case

the electric piano

which i'm going to close using skater two

so let's just dive in and choose

a kind of progression idea

and now what we can do is

actually use the midi keyboard

to play back the sound from the electric piano

just to demonstrate something different

let's choose es two

so basically

using the midi effect

we can control whatever is loaded in underneath

on the channel

okay let's take this off

now the third way is to actually use an audio track

and load on

scaler two has an audio instance

now this allows us to detect audio

which is playing through this audio track

and we're going to look at that

later on in the video series

so that's the three ways we can basically

use the plugin

okay so let's have a look at the interface

okay so the top of the plugin is the header area

so from here we can click on this skater logo

to get some information about the plugin

now next up we have the status bar here

that allows us to kind of keep track of midi and audio

which is coming into the plugin

and then following on from that

we have the performance panel here

now the next area is the instrument panel

and this can either be a piano or a fretboard

now moving across

we have our settings here

there's three tabs within that

playback preferences

and session

plays it down again by clicking on the little cross

now beneath this instrument panel here

we have browser section a

and this will change

according to what we choose from here

so at the moment we are on detect

we could choose scales

or we could choose from song

kind of ideas or chord progressions

you associate with different genres

artists that have created presets for this plugin

we also have a user area as well

so let's choose song

and now you'll see

we've got some suggested chords that go with that song

we have some detected scales as well

so that's our browser section a

now beneath this we have browser section b

now this allows us to further dial in the chords

by choosing from different voicings

different variations

so we can kind of choose to modulate essentially

to move to different keys

we have a modulation section here as well

that allows us to choose

kind of movements using the circle of fifths

and then from here we can use section c which is below

which is our progression builder

now this allows us to throw chords in here

do it from different sections

and then we can either play back that chord progression

using the play button here

or we can choose to playback

this section using the midi keyboard

so whenever we see these little buttons here

it means we can use the midi keyboard to playback

the chords are located there

those rests are throwing off a little bit

let's chuck something in the rest as well

and of course we can choose to change the sound

pretty cool

and as i said we've got these kind of midi bind buttons

for the different sections

so we could try out that section or

the section here

so at all times

we've got a quick and easy way of being able to

jam our ideas on the midi keyboard

okay so that is a basic introduction

to how we can load the plugin up

and the interface and what things are called

so just to recap

remember we can load the plugin up in three ways

midi effects

which allows us to control an external plugin

an instrument

which means we can use the built in sounds

or alternatively

an audio scaler two

which allows us to detect audio playback on the channel

now for the interface

we have the header up here

we have the status bar here

the performance panel

and then settings

with three tabs within that

we then have the instrument panel

which can be a piano or a guitar fretboard

and then beneath that

we have browser section a

which means we can choose our scales

our different kind

of genres artists

and also the user area

and then within that

we have some sub categories to choose from

and then we have area b

and this allows us to explore the scale in more detail

we can choose just triads or ninths

we've got different voicings we can choose from etc

and then finally

we have the actual progression builder

which is located at the bottom

which is where we can drag chords in

to build up our chord progression

remember these buttons allow us to play back

using the midi keyboard

from any of our three sections

okay so that's our first video

and introduction to the plugin

using scaler two on an audio track
