I'm stopping by a contractor Mike's office today

to check on some plans.

We have about eight projects going on right now.

We came up with some 3D.

Basically, it's gonna show the kitchen, how it's gonna look.

It looks pretty.

It's a huge island.

- Isn't that big? I think it's over like ten feet. - Yeah.

- Ten feet? - Yeah, I think so.

That's like the size of mine.

I know-- Actually, no. I think it's about 13.

- Thirteen? - Yeah, it's 13 feet.

- It's a big boy. - I know.

I know we have a lot going on right now,

but I'm about to hit him with another.

I got a lead on a new client.

- Okay. - They're newly married.

Their names are David and Odett.

Young family. They have a one-year old daughter.

They seem super sweet.

And basically, it's a tiny kitchen

that's kinda like peeling apart.

Is it old?

So, yeah. It's dark and dated.

You know, they look like old cabinets that just like--

You mean like those old brown ones they used to put in?

- Yes. - Yeah, yeah. Okay.

And look at that tiny island?

So they need an area where they can sit around, entertain.

This kitchen is just not doing it for them.

David and Odett's house is near where I grew up

and it's always fun to be back in this area.

Their house is relatively new, so I'm curious to see what's going on inside.

Oh, my gosh, guys, Your house is so clean.

Don't you have a daughter?

We have a 15-month-old.

This is like the cleanest house I've ever been in.

It's the cleanest, emptiest house.

So we moved in about a year ago,

right after our daughter was born.

Yeah. Lot of our rooms don't actually have furniture.

We need help.

Once I see the rest of the house,

then we can start coming up with some ideas.

Need some tips. Mine doesn't at all look this clean.

We've had days where, you know, there's six or seven people

Like, if you want to put your cocktails or even food down,

there's just not enough room.

The pantry doesn't work for me.

Um, I lack counterspace when I'm cooking.

So, I have no prep space.

We both like to cook.

But with the counterspace, it's just not functional for us.

If my wife's in the kitchen and I'm not there, it's functional.

If we're both in the kitchen, its non-functional.

Our cabinets, there is some finish that is peeling in random areas.

It definitely is time for an update.

Okay. Because the appliances look really new.

- Were those here? Okay. - Brand new.

So, assuming you obviously want to keep all the appliances.

Okay. So I saw like, next to the stairs is a little wine fridge

and there's a little one there.

- Yes. - Are you into wine?

So we are a wine family.

My parents have a little winery.

So we highly, highly enjoy wine.

Except, we just don't have any space.

This is full.

The fridge that you saw in the front was full.

And then, we use our refrigerator and we add more wine in there.

It feels pretty traditional. Is that your style?

It's a traditional house, but I would say my style is more modern.

I love rustic. But I like a modern rustic

with, like, newer-looking countertops.

I would say, I'm more like a Flintstones, my wife is more like The Jetsons.

Okay. The Jetsons, I mean that's like crazy modern.

It's not that extreme,

but I do like light, bright, clean finishes.

Okay. So, is there anything in this house that represents you guys' style right now?

Is the upstairs remodeled?

It's not bad.

- Could we see it? - It's traditional, so not my style.

Okay. I'm sure it's clean. So, you guys aren't gonna be embarrassed.

I'm not trying to put them on the spot, but asking to see the rest of the house,

I can just tell that the downstairs is not their style.

Sometimes, getting a tour of the entire house can be really helpful for me

to see what a client really likes and doesn't like.

Like, the wood look and the rustic finish is just not my style.

It is my style.

But I would've like to go with something a little bit darker.

We couldn't agree on the furniture, the dressers in here.

You notice a trend, right?

I love this bathroom.

It's nice and dark. It's got lots of contrast.

- I mean, this looks fantastic. - Yeah, its soothing. I love the bathtub.

That's probably the one thing in this bathroom that I love

'cause it's more modern look.

It's very hard for me to understand why she doesn't like the rustic style.

Because rustic is old and it never gets old. Why?

Because... it's old.

- So it never goes out of style. - Never goes out of style.

That's actually the first time I've ever heard that.

What's your occupation?

I am in IT.

Yes, so yes. My mom is in IT.

So I understand. It's logical, so it makes sense.

Is there anything that's modern that you want to show me?

Yes! There is one thing in this house that I got my way on.

This table. This is modern.

Earlier we talked about The Jetsons, right?

It's The Jetsons. Look at it. It's just too modern.

It's just our style is not the same.

I think rustic to him means using darker colors

and natural elements like wood and stone,

which is pretty far from her light colors and metal finishes.

What are you guys looking to spend here?

What I suggest is that we bring

this whole wall out and extend the kitchen to this wall.

I would suggest moving your double-oven

from over there to over here,

and we make this like an appliance/pantry wall.

Your refrigerator, double-oven and then a nice large pantry.

- The tiny island will be gone. - Okay.

Then over here, since the double-ovens will be switched,

this will all be prep space.

You'll still have your stove here,

and sink, and dishwasher there as well.

But on this wall, we would extend the lowers

all the way to where the window is.

Which is going to give you about six feet more of kitchen space,

- which is huge. - Oh, wow.

And then we bring out a nice, large peninsula.

You guys can hang out around it.

We'll do an overhang, so you guys can sit here as well.

And that'll make the kitchen feel literally, twice as big.

That sounds amazing.

Yeah, sounds good.

So, if you're good with everything,

I can have my contractor, Mike, come out,

we can get everything demoed and get going.

Question. Are they keeping this fridge?

They were planning on keeping everything, yeah.

The thing is it's not counter depth, so...

out to here, it's almost 35 inches.

Where does the counter end?

In comparison, how many inches is that?

Over eight and a half inches.

Wow! Then it would just stick out like this?

Or we bring everything out to this depth.

But then, I feel like the peninsula's here,

I feel like it could get tight.

Demoing the space really revealed how big the fridge is.

And if we build the kitchen around this space,

I don't think it's gonna have that custom look that they want.

It's either like, we do a smaller peninsula

and then we have this bigger area over here,

or...

we get a new fridge and we have a big peninsula and more room to walk.

'Cause eight inches, that's a lot.

I gotta tell you, there's nothing in this kitchen that I picked out,

except for that right there.

- Oh, no. - So getting rid of it is... I don't know.

I mean, I hate having anyone spend extra money,

especially we're at the beginning of the project.

But ultimately, in this kitchen, we wanted to create more space.

So by gaining that extra foot, I think you'll be happy.

You can definitely sell this and recoup, like, minimum half

- of what you paid. - That's true.

If we have to do it, then...

I hate spending money on a new fridge,

but I also know it doesn't make sense to have a cramped kitchen

because I'm attached to an appliance.

On top of David and Odett's renovation,

I'm also working on a project in La Jolla,

which is about an hour south of Newport.

I met with the owner Brian and his daughter, Alana,

last week to walk the space.

The entire project is design. There is no renovation.

And he has about $50,000 to spend on furnishing it.

I came in to look at this place,

and I walked up into this room, I looked straight up there

and I said to myself, I'm doing everything in my power to get this place.

- That is beautiful. - Oh, my gosh!

Just got better!

This is peace and tranquility.

But...

it really doesn't feel like our own place until you work some magic on it.

Well, what's your style?

Uh... you have full authority to do whatever you want

- with this place. - Oh, yeah? Whatever I want?

Before I can take James down to La Jolla,

there is an issue that popped up at David and Odett's that cannot be ignored.

How is she liking the construction zone?

We, first of all, got rid of the refrigerator

so we don't have to design around it.

This is the first project where he and I have had the owner's full permission

to do pretty much whatever we want.

So, scrap all the furniture. It's all too modern.

I don't like the look of the double couch that he has going.

My thing to him was, I just said like, we need to soften it up a little bit.

Now, let's go look at the bedroom.

What's kinda weird about here, and I need you help.

Whoever designed this, did it sort of awkward

because when you open the door

you can't have patio furniture.

You can't at all.

Of course, you're gonna wanna sit out here.

But what do you do? There's no room.

So, it's almost like we need to find a place to store it somewhere inside.

That way you can have some...

- cute chairs. - Yeah, we'll figure that out.

- Is that kinda weird? - Well, couple of chairs...

That can go out there.

- Okay. - Outdoor fabric.

- Perfect. All right. - Yeah.

Not much in here, but it just feels a little sterile.

Okay, this is what we have to concentrate on.

This area, he was really excited about.

Now that we've walked the space,

we'll start pulling options for furniture and fabrics.

What I love about this project

is it shows you don't always have to gut a space to transform it.

This is my favorite day.

We did have one question

- we wanted to ask. - Mmm-hm?

The oven that we had over there on the wall,

we were thinking about just getting the oven under our stove,

- so we can gain more cabinet space. - Okay.

This is actually a great change.

By losing those wall ovens,

we could scoot the fridge down and build a bigger bank of cabinets around it,

while still hiding the gas line.

That would definitely flow a lot better

with the fridge being more centered.

- You guys want to do that? - For sure!

Okay! That's great news. I'll let Mike know about that.

And now, we can get to the fun stuff...

- Yes! - Design.

- David, do you mind moving that table to the middle? - Absolutely.

Since they're struggling to blend their styles,

I bought a few more options than I normally would,

to make sure that we get everyone on the same page.

So we'll start with like, the most like, basic one,

white shaker.

Then we have...

a light grey.

- Okay? - Okay.

We could go... blue.

And then we have...

the whitewashed oak.

Showing materials to homeowners

can go one of two ways.

Either they're super excited or they get really quiet.

When this happens, I just keep explaining what I'm thinking.

That way, they have time to process everything.

With all these, we can play around with them.

You could do, like, white uppers

and grey lowers.

If you blend them together, the modern-rustic, I think it looks really, really good.

This is a quartz marble with a nice veining.

The backsplash has a modern geometric pattern

that she will like.

But it's in a natural marble texture that he will love.

The countertop is clean-modern for her,

but still has stone veining for him.

I mean, I actually like the backsplash on there.

I like it too.

I mean, it's definitely modern,

but it has a rustic kinda design.

I really like the countertops.

I like the two-tone.

I can go with white uppers and the blue,

or white with the grey.

To create this bar area,

we can move the wine fridge they already have,

but I think we're gonna need a second one.

Put some wine on display, some cups, make it real cute.

that we're designing for Alana.

it's gonna take away from the backsplash.

So, what would we have to change? What's the cost?

we were gonna do tile all the way up.

So it could end up being a wash, honestly.

I want to create a seating area next to the bar,

so I'm taking them to a home store in Newport Beach that I love.

I have a few pieces in mind to show them,

including a few from my own furniture line.

So what I envision is four comfy chairs facing each other,

nice coffee table in the middle,

kind of a conversation area

where you guys can be having some wine or relaxing.

I like that.

I feel like that really adds pop too.

Not having the island in the middle, it looks ten times bigger.

Look at all this space that we have.

Just bringing it out that much with the peninsula

makes it feel like it's twice as big.

The kitchen that we had before had this small island in the middle,

so you had a really small island inside of a small kitchen.

And now I feel like, this is how the kitchen should have originally been designed.

It's really fantastic.

It definitely feels modern.

it's there now and it does look good.

And then before, you had the pantry

and there was a gas line over here

but we hid it perfectly

by just enclosing it and honestly, you'd never know it was there.

And you had to get a new refrigerator,

but look at this sleek, modern fridge.

It was 100% the best call to get rid of our old fridge

and get a new fridge that was counter-depth.

Definitely, 'cause our new kitchen now looks seamless.

...and now it feels just like one, big entertaining area.

And I love how we have barstools here,

this is something we did not have before.

- Totally, it has the best flow now. - Fantastic.
