it's just very hectic right now.

George and his wife Adri just bought a total fixer

in the city of Orange and I think he might need my help.

When you work in the business and you're not a designer,

it can actually make it harder to design your own space.

Being surrounded by so many tile and countertop options can be overwhelming.

It's really tough. Like so tough to just

choose materials. It's like the hardest part ever, you know.

How is Adri doing with everything?

Are you guys like on the same page,

- 'cause you have everything here. - Not really.

That's the hardest part of it all.

We're at a complete standstill at home.

Her style is way different from my style.

And anytime I suggest something, it automatically becomes a no.

And the house is already demolished.

So we started demo

a few weeks ago, and we can't do anything because we can't come to an agreement.

That's like pretty much the main thing that happens between every couple.

- Let's help you. - Yeah.

- Really? - I mean, we would love to.

- You would love... that would be amazing. - Yeah.

I mean, you've done so much stuff for us. Like we would love to help.

My contractor friend took a look inside the walls and said

we should have no issues with opening everything up.

we want to use a lot of that budget to do more high-end stuff.

So, I mean, right away, we definitely need to

expand the kitchen.

So what I'm thinking is...

- let's remove that wall and vault the ceilings. - That sounds amazing.

And I noticed that, like most of the view is to the side-yard,

when it really should be towards the backyard and the pool.

- Right. - That would be nice.

So my idea is like, to flip it.

- Okay. - So basically,

to extend the kitchen, we'll steal some square footage from the living room area

and create a great room. We move a door down here where the windows are

- remove this window... - Okay.

...and then we create a large L-shape.

So we can do pantry, refrigerator,

do the stove right here. That way, we create an even bigger kitchen

uppers and lowers.

Not fond on uppers.

If we could do just like, no uppers,

that would be, like clean and like,

- a little bit-- - So, you're thinking like all floating shelves.

- Mmm-hmm. - You don't like that?

Not really. I would love to have some cabinets.

I mean, double cabinets just look so nice to me.

And then over here, we could do the sink

and the dishwasher, and a really large picture window.

And if you're game, we can do one of these really cool flip windows,

So, that way, instead of the view being over there to the side yard,

this whole view would be of the pool.

And then we can do a nice, big island in the middle.

could come out without any problem.

He's a lawyer. He' a single dad, he has a teenaged daughter...

So he reached out and asked

if I would

furnish it for him.

La Jolla is a really gorgeous part of San Diego.

It's about an hour or so from Newport Beach.

This project will be decor only. Nothing structural,

which means I think this is definitely something that James and I can take on.

So it's super modern and everything is just like

gray right now so it definitely needs...

So when we accessorize,

we can add mid-century modern elements.

it looks like a huge space, but it's not even that many shelves.

and then some more shelves that wrap around.

and then you're going to have a break for the vent.

And then they're going to continue over there.

remember you guys pulled this countertop?

- Mmm-hmm. - So the cool thing about

this product is, is that because it's so durable,

it's not going to leave watermarks or anything like that.

A place where we can add like, a really, really unique factor

would be doing

the entire sink in the composite material which we can

which that's very rare. Because of this particular type of material

we are enabled to do like,

a 36-inch sink that's made out of it.

Now that's hot.

- I like that. - Yeah, so no stainless, right?

- Right. - It would just be that.

- Yeah. - That's nice.

Composite countertops are made with all natural and recycled materials like crushed stone.

It's designed to look like marble, but is less porous

making it much more resistant to chemicals and scratching.

And then if we do the island black.

Get that modern vibe.

- Yeah. - And to add more of a mid-century look,

we can even do a waterfall edge with those beautiful counters.

I mean, I love the waterfall edge.

You would know better than anyone,

isn't it always used, like, doesn't everybody have a waterfall edge?

- I mean... - I don't.

Because where I'm going with it is we see it all the time.

Well, okay, so I totally hear what you're saying.

So what if instead of the waterfall edge,

we make the island look more like a piece of furniture

and we do like, shelving on the side?

That way when you walk in, it doesn't just feel like a basic countertop.

Okay. I mean, I like that.

That would be cool.

And for backsplash. I want to do something kind of unique here.

- Okay. - Okay. So we know the Zellige.

What I'm thinking is, we run the same countertop up

about 14-inch backsplash and then incorporate the Zellige.

So it's a nice blend of the California contemporary look and

- mid-century modern vibe. - I love that.

I like it. I like the countertop going halfway up the wall. It's really nice.

- I've never seen it before. - Right.

FInally, I think we need to take advantage of these amazing vaulted ceilings.

I'm suggesting white shiplap,

to bring in more of the coastal vibe that she likes.

And in the kitchen, they are installing shiplap

on the ceilings to give her the coastal feel that she wants.

would be a floating vanity with no cabinet underneath.

And we can give him a little bit of that waterfall edge that he loves.

George and Adri's new kitchen window is going in today.

This is something that he ordered on his own through one of his contacts.

And he just called to say there's a problem.

So what happened?

- I ordered this... - This window.

Mmm-hmm. And when I ordered it,

I said it was new construction.

- Okay. - And it should have been a retrofit.

Okay.

So since it's not a retrofit,

pretty much have to cut some of the stucco out

in order for them to nail it into the studs.

Let me make a quick phone call.

So basically what happened is

George ordered that huge window.

And the problem is he paid all this money to do this super nice stucco

and he thought the window was just going to pop in.

But he ordered the wrong type of window.

So meanwhile, he needs a retrofit window which

if he decides to go that route is going to take maybe six weeks.

And we only have a few weeks left of this house. So that's a big delay.

Or he can decide to mess up all that stucco work,

which may never looks the same,

because it's a nice, smooth plaster.

So right now he's kind of freaking out deciding what he what's to do.

- What's up? - The window doesn't fit.

- The main window? - Yeah.

- That took forever? - That beautiful, custom window.

- So... - So we can either wait six weeks for a new window.

- Uh-huh. - Or they have to cut into your brand-new, like,

smooth plaster you guys did.

Okay.

What's the better option?

I just spoke to the stucco guy.

So he's on his way. He's going to do it right now.

So the window's going in today or no?

The window's going to be going in today.

- I'm done. I just want to finish this... - Good.

...and move on.

Makes sense.

Poor George. I mean, it's literally been

one problem after another over here.

And he has so many connections and hookups,

but there's just... there's a lot of things going wrong.

The composite countertops are going in today at George and Adri's,

which means that Mike can get started on the farmhouse sink,

using the same material.

It's going to look amazing.

Meanwhile, I'm concerned about how the stucco's going to look around the kitchen window.

Stucco patching can be tricky. More often than not, you can

tell which area has been patched

and that never looks good.

Okay. So let's talk about this window.

- Obviously, this is quite the problem. - It is.

And obviously, this isn't your fault.

So George ordered the wrong size window,

and they had to cut the stucco.

Is there any way to reblend it back in?

Normally, I would say yes, but in this case,

- he had just recently did smooth stucco. - Right.

And when you do that,

it's going to be really hard

- to blend it. You're going to always see the patch. - Really?

Yeah.

What if we did some type of like, a trim piece,

and painted it black and just sort of made it blend in?

Okay. So stucco it,

waterproof it and then afterwards add a wood trim

- over it? - Yeah. Exactly.

- Yeah, we could definitely do that. - Think that will blend?

I mean, it matches the front windows.

The front windows have a black trim around it.

- Right? Okay. Exactly. - All right.

I feel that's the best option right? I feel no one would ever know the difference.

- Yeah. - All right.

- Cool. We're close. - We have a plan.

We're in the home stretch.

The floating sink is being installed in the powder room,

and the main bathroom is coming together.

Meanwhile, back at George's shop,

they're using the water jet to cut the shower pan tile into small mosaic pieces.

First, they program the shape they want into the computer.

Then, a high powered stream of water

cuts right through the tile.

This thing is so powerful, it will cut through steel.

The rectangular shape they chose is going to look great.

Looks so spa-ish in here.

So I can't believe how much this looks like plaster and it's a slab. Right?

- Love that. - I love it.

So pretty. Okay.

- So, I know that we're doing the black metal frame. - Mmm-hmm.

So I thought that the brass would look really pretty,

blending with that. I mean, check out that rain shower head.

it flows with it but it's just different and unexpected.

That powder room. It's the gem in the crown.

It stops you in your tracks.

It definitely feels like you're walking into a mid-century hotel.
