My friends Jared and Marissa reached out to me for some design help.

We used to be neighbors back in Yorba Linda.

Our homes were both Mediterranean

and we had the exact same floor plan.

Apparently they just had a huge flood in their home,

I feel super bad and I want to help out in any way that I can.

- So what happened? - Yes.

Well, we went to Mammoth and we were gone for a little over a week

and we came home to find out that the boys

must have left the shower on.

- Oh, my gosh, it's brutal. - Yeah.

So what is the, like, extent of the damage?

The water went everywhere.

It came from the upstairs bath

and went through all the walls and all through the flooring,

like, we just walked in and wanted to cry

and walked back out. So I need your help.

I would love, love, love to help you.

As you know, I had the same floor plan

and I have a ton of ideas that can totally modernize the space.

If it was up to Jared,

he would just like copy and paste and go back Mediterranean.

This is terrible that their house flooded,

but I'm actually really excited to help Jared and Marissa.

There are always things that I wanted to update

in our house back in the day and there are a lot of things we can do.

Nobody has fessed up to it, obviously,

But, like, we have two showerheads in our shower

- and one was the handle, you know? - Uh-huh.

Well, the handle was stuck in the corner.

Somebody turned it off but didn't turn it off all the way.

Oh, so the body sprayer.

- Yeah, the body sprayer. - Yes, exactly.

And it was like left in the corner

- so you wouldn't notice it being on. - Yeah.

It was like constant flow for seven days.

Huh, so is it bad-bad in there?

- Yeah. - Yeah, it's bad.

- All right. You ready to show me? - Yep.

- Okay. - Let's do this.

Oh, my gosh.

I know it's so sad.

- So the water got all of the space? - Mm-hmm.

- Oh, my gosh. - And into the floor, too, like, you can see.

The water just came, water like came down the stairs,

like the stairs and down the walls and from up there,

all the doors were all swollen.

Wow. Oh, my... oh, my gosh.

- Wow. - Like, when we came home,

like, our couch was, like,

you know, all right here and this thing, like,

it was completely soaked, like,

if you stepped on it, it was like a sponge,

- you know. - Oh, brutal.

Our bedroom's right above this, obviously,

you know, because it's same floor plan,

but you can tell where it came down and then...

and then it came, you know, through here,

like this whole area was, like,

the ceiling was completely out when we walked in the house.

What did the kids say when you guys got home?

- What are we gonna do now? - They all...

they all pointed at each other, "It wasn't me, wasn't me."

You know, in shame.

Well, obviously, this was very style-specific,

- now they're like a blank slate... - Mm-hmm.

...what's your ultimate dream kitchen?

Light and bright, and just neutral, nothing too wild.

- Yeah. - So it'll just stand the test of time.

Do you want to go totally opposite?

I mean, I do.

I mean, honestly, like, I wouldn't change anything,

- I like the way it is. - He would copy and paste

and put it all back together.

I would like to keep the floors. I love these floors.

The only thing is, is they are very style-specific.

- Yeah, we're locked into that. - You're locked.

And this was like the hottest style ever in 2005, six, seven.

I guess I like to hold on to things, I don't know.

I know, I know.

I'm just gonna say that while you have the opportunity

to do something more updated, I would suggest...

- Yeah. - Ripping it out?

Because then you have so much more choices,

we can come up with a lot of options,

- but still both of your styles. - Okay.

Yep, I'm game for options but we're a little nuts,

obviously with all of our boys, and we let our boys--

- That's you being nuts. - I've been here when the boys

are riding motorcycles through the front door and outside,

so don't act like I haven't seen it.

So we have four boys and three of them love to ride their bikes,

and our fourth is not far behind.

And I don't really like to say no to them.

Maybe we'll draw the line, "No motorized vehicle in the house."

So whatever we get, it's gonna have to be like--

It's got to be durable.

The style all continues into this room.

Obviously, the fireplace, very much went with the old style as well.

Yeah, it's bad. It's real bad.

I'm thinking this is gonna go.

So redo all this and I see something else.

Everything is very style-specific.

And then now we have the powder bath,

- which, this is a lot of stone in here, too. - Yeah.

So you're saying to rip this out?

I think whatever we do is not gonna match this.

I mean, would you leave the same faucet and stuff?

No? I like that faucet.

I didn't realize that

we needed to change everything on the first floor.

Well, it wouldn't make sense if we did some updated and some stayed old world.

I get it but I just,

it's a bummer.

To do all of that what I just suggested

and to redo all the flooring, you're probably looking at,

pfft, upwards of $150,000.

And that depends on the quality of materials.

So that could go up to $200,000 depending on what we pick.

And with all your connections, maybe you can get that down.

I would say we do a massive island here.

This is where you guys hang out.

So something big.

- Yeah. - I think we definitely want a big island.

And by getting rid of the molding,

we can do all the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling.

And I think what could look really cool right here

is if we do a massive refrigerator.

- Ooh, I love that. - Like industrial size.

- Yeah. - Over here, we run uppers and lowers,

give you a nice, big farm sink.

- Yes, love that. - Something really pretty.

Over here, I think it'd be cute to do like a beverage center,

And then kind of take out

these cabinets and do floating shelves.

Yeah, love that.

Honestly, I think with your help,

I think that and with my dad and everybody be involved,

I think it'll help us get into the house faster. I'm excited.

it's the perfect time to add things on.

So one thing I've always wanted to do here

is put accordion doors in,

and now that the wall's open and we're doing all sorts of stuff,

I think it's a perfect opportunity.

So I wanted to see what you thought about that,

I also wanted to see

what you thought it would cost us to do it,

because I know you went through it

at your house up the street.

It's a big job. The doors themselves are really expensive.

- Yeah. - The labor is expensive.

It's load bearing, so you have to put the beam up

and that's expensive. It's... it's...

it was, I think, $60,000 all in.

Really, that much for just this door?

Yeah.

So one thing I've always wanted to do here is open this wall

and put accordion doors in.

I know you went through it at your house up the street.

That's why no one has it.

Like, you walk into model homes and you see them,

but nobody has them, like, they are very expensive.

I'll say this, I have it in my house now, like,

your kids are active, they're outside,

sometimes you want to be inside, like,

with those doors, you open them up,

you have that indoor/outdoor feel.

And we've been talking about it for,

I want to do it, but I also want to be able to eat dinner.

I mean, I definitely think that while we're doing it,

we should do it, no matter what.

I think it's definitely the best thing I did at that house.

While Jared's dad preps the doors and begins the permit process,

we have to nail down the materials in the kitchen.

Marissa wants a big change, Jared, not so much,

but I pulled some materials that I think they'll both love.

- So, flooring. - Oh, my gosh.

I had them make this mock up

because what I propose for you guys to do

is do herringbone in these two rooms.

I love it. It's so bitchin'.

I mean, I guess I really can't have my tile anymore.

We can't bring it back.

The good thing is that we could do white cabinets.

- I actually like it a lot. - Yay.

Okay, good. So we got white

because we could not have done white

- with the old flooring. - Mm-hmm.

So my idea is to do white uppers and lowers

and then a black island.

Black island, awesome.

- Hundred percent. - I think that's so cool.

What about doing gray on the uppers and then a black island?

- He's trying to go back into that dark... - The dark zone?

- Uh-huh. Yeah. - I think it'll be too dark.

The reason I'm suggesting that they don't do gray and black cabinets is, well,

I think it'll look great,

it'll definitely way too dark for Marissa.

Sticking with white and black will really combine what they're both after.

So if I want to do a black center island, don't do gray at all?

Right.

Well, then, I definitely want to do a black center island.

- Yeah, me too. I think it will look rad. - Looks awesome.

And also, because I know you like black,

I thought it would be really cool

to incorporate the black in the pantry area, the bar area.

- Ooh, yeah. - So we could do, like, a nice bar in there.

We could do black lowers and black floating shelves.

- That'd look cool. - Ooh, yeah, that'd look cool.

These counters I brought

- are awesome because this is a new material. - Ooh.

- It's manmade recycled stone. - Okay.

And it looks totally like kind of marble,

- but it's much more durable. - Ooh, that's cool.

That's not porous,

- and you guys have the four boys, so. - Yeah.

- They only had small samples of the mat. - Okay.

So I brought the big samples, the shiny,

- just so you can see it. - Oh, okay.

But this is basically--

- Are these different? - Yes.

- Okay, because that has like a little bit of-- - We'll avoid the yellow.

- Yeah, but I like this bit of gold. - I like the matte.

- Yeah. - Yeah. Me too, the matte for sure.

- Me, too. - Yeah.

So for the island, I was thinking we could do waterfall edge.

So basically like the marble be flowing down the sides,

but if that's too modern for you guys,

we could do like a thick cut.

- No, I like... It's better than before. - I think I like it.

I love that. Simple, modern.

So backsplash. I love this.

Oh, I like that.

I like how that looks.

And then for the bar area...

- This is cool. - Kind of unique but,

so I saw this design.

Ooh.

So basically, in that room,

all like going up around the window and on the side of the walls,

we could do this X pattern and then it'll have white in the middle.

- I love that. - You like that?

- Yeah, that's super cool. - And I like, like a feature wall.

Yeah, it can be kind of funky because it's like,

- it's separate and it's not huge. - Yep.

- I think that would look rad. - I think that would look awesome.

I like that.

So what do you guys think about this design?

but the city finally gave us the go-ahead for the doors.

Poured a little concrete today, got steel in yesterday.

We did change the door a little bit.

Initially, we talked about accordion doors,

but then we realized with multi-slide doors,

we could put a pocket in and hide them completely.

The problem now is that there's a delay with the manufacturer.

So it's gonna move our project back about three or four weeks.

So what are you doing right now?

We did change the door a little bit.

and move forward with installing the accordion doors,

but they now want to change them to pocket doors

so that when they open them, they're totally hidden.

So they asked me to help them do the bathroom as well.

So I was thinking maybe like a cement tile that's a little bit bold.

And then I was thinking for the shower something kind of simple,

like, a take on like a white subway, but not a white subway.

We can't forget about this upstairs bath where the whole flood started.

It's already been completely gutted,

which means we have a blank slate.

So, as long as we're on board with everything I'm bringing today,

we should be good to go, and Jared's dad can order all the materials.

With that bathtub gone, that massive spa tub is huge in here.

It's a brand new one, like, it literally just came out.

And I was thinking this for the shower walls.

I love that. That's cool. It's like kind of rustic.

- Yeah. - Ooh, that's neat.

With this kind of like rustic wood.

- Vanity. - Yeah, because that's basically like the--

These will be the cabinets.

- Yeah. - Yeah.

And then a countertop.

Oh, I love that.

Which also looks nice with all this.

And then we have hardware, where you can go with like a brass.

Oh, I love the brass.

Okay, so what like about this combination,

do you like, not like, what are you guys feeling?

I'm just worried like, like a design with the patterns, like,

if I would get sick of it in a year,

- year and a half, two years? - So particularly the floor?

Just the floor, yeah.

- I know, I know. - I... I really like it.

I know it's a lot of pattern, but it's kind of,

everything else is pretty neutral

that we could go kind of funky with the flooring.

What I like about it too is it still has like a bit of a masculinity flair to it

and I like the combination of like all these different textures

because I feel like it really represents both of your style.

And also like, if you guys, like,

don't you want to have a cool pattern versus just like a basic?

- No, I do. Yeah, for sure. - No basic.

- Yeah, but definitely not basic. - No basic.

I'm so happy that Christina helped us with the bathroom

because she picked some fun materials

that I know Jared would never have gone for.

I'm really happy that he's able to trust her

and just have an open mind.

I don't think you're gonna get sick of it.

It's time to focus on the living room fireplace.

The old design made it feel like an afterthought,

but I think we can really make it stand out.

There was a baby, too, it must have flown away already.

- Oh, they're so cute. - Oh, they're sitting on the fence over there.

- Oh, my gosh. - I know but one already hatched.

Okay, so as you know, I had the same setup before.

- Mm-hmm. - Yeah.

And personally, like, it always bothered me

- that the fireplace was off center. - Yeah.

Because the fireplace is so big

and then there was like no way to, like,

position your TV correctly and it was just like,

I felt like it was just kind of awkward.

So something I always wanted to do

was create like a more of a modern wall back here

and do an elongated fireplace,

put the TV above it, everything centered.

I like that idea.

That sounds really cool.

How big would you do the fireplace though?

I mean, minimum of like 60 inches and then whatever size we do,

do like a similar size TV on top, but we could go bigger.

I think it would be awesome if we could go as long as we possibly could.

I'd say for like the 60 inch,

- you're looking at maybe $5,000. - Mm-hmm.

But a 100 inch, because it's rare and not many people

have the space for it,

I think you're looking at like $15,000.

Wow, it's crazy.

It just seems like everything just keeps adding up

- and adding up and adding up, so you know, but. - I know.

And I just feel like the smaller one's gonna get lost,

I definitely think the bigger the better.

Big fireplace, big TV.

So what I was thinking is we do the whole back wall in a stone.

I think that'll really incorporate

what you guys have going outside, too,

with that stone look.

There's three options.

One has a little more gray on the right,

the middle has a little more sparkle, bling,

and then this left one has a little bit of the gold in it.

I would say my two favorites are the middle one and the one to the left.

Yeah. Which one's your favorite?

Personally, I'm obsessed with the middle one.

I think it's so pretty, like,

- I like how-- - It's so sparkly. I love that.

I just think when the sun hits this one,

I mean, it's gloomy outside today,

- but when the sun hits this one, awesome. - It's so pretty.

And I like the fact, too,

that it doesn't really have like other colors in it

because that way, like, whatever you guys do in the family room,

- this one will look nice. - Yes, it's super neutral.

So I was thinking the gray grout

kind of pulled the gray in the floor,

so kind of all went together.

and are been installed and the kitchen cabinets are next.

When it was dark and everything, you kind of notice it less,

but now that it's light and bright in here,

I just feel like it's literally taken away from the entire design.

It's horrible.

What are your thoughts?

I think the flush mount is our best choice,

but with the second floor, I don't know how much room is between,

so we'll find out.

I had this at my old house,

and I didn't like it and I wanted to get rid of it, so...

So you kept this?

- Yeah. - Was it that low?

I don't remember, I know I did it like it.

If we can't do a flush mount, we need to do something like slimline.

- I agree. - Just very slim, maybe glass,

so it doesn't take up any visual space.

Totally, because once the cabinets are painted white

and the islands black, like, this room's gonna look really,

just so much more contemporary, and this thing is just,

it's... it's not fitting.

Les and his team have totally transformed the fireplace wall.

To keep the house on track,

I pulled some materials for the powder room

that really worked well with the fireplace.

- It looks amazing. - Gorgeous.

- Beautiful. - It like has the perfect amount of like...

- Bling. - Yep, the bling.

That was my, like, biggest regret of redoing my house

was leaving the fireplace off to the side.

So I feel like this is how it should have been done in the first place.

- Yeah. - I agree. Yeah, it looks great.

I like it a lot, it looks rad.

So, TV size, good?

I mean, I wish that it was been a little bit bigger.

- Bigger? - Like maybe a 100 inch?

How would you, you'd like have to sit there,

couch way back there in order to like

actually see the TV if it was any bigger?

- Yeah, isn't that how it's supposed to be? - No.

Where would we put this?

I mean, I think it would have been fine

if it would have matched, like,

in line with the fireplace and it would have came to here,

down to here, all the way across to there.

So where do you put the couch then, like, in the kitchen?

We just push the couch back.

I actually brought some samples for the powder bathroom.

We can either go with this same tile on the back wall,

- just behind the vanity. - Okay.

Or we can mix it up and go with the stone,

like, this kind of stagger set, different sizes and shapes.

- It's like rustic. - Yeah, I like that.

I actually have something similar to this in my dining room

- at the old house. - Oh, okay.

And I loved it, it kind of, like,

it kind of just ties back to like the original style of the house,

but because of the color and like the shape and everything,

it's more contemporary.

And I think this would look really pretty

if we did it the whole bathroom.

Yeah, ooh, that'd be cool.

We all loved the herringbone patterns

of the wood floor that I pitched,

but since this project keeps growing and growing,

we're gonna ditch the herringbone pattern and just lay in like normal.

The herringbone pattern, it costs a lot more,

usually up to 40% because of the labor,

it takes a lot of cuts to lay it in that pattern.

We weren't able to get a flush mount hood,

but we were able to get a low profile one that's barely visible.

Once it's in place, we can add the new quartz countertops

and the picket-style backsplash.

Okay, so she called me and said they switched counters

to a very thick veining,

but what she didn't tell me is that

they're no longer using our backsplash choice

and that they're running the marble up the walls.

The most important thing to me is that Jared and Marissa

are happy with their kitchen.

I don't have an issue with their choice,

I'm just trying to understand it.

Personally, like,

it's not that I don't like it, it's just,

um, first of all, I wasn't expecting it,

- so I'm kind of in shock. - Right.

And I really think the pickets would have looked really beautiful

and just like softened it a little bit.

- It's very formal. - Yeah.

They're a very casual, down-to-earth family,

and it really is very formal.

So we're just gonna have to bring it down a bit when we stage.

- We can soften it up, I mean... - Oh, we totally can.

...that's our specialty is to do our best with staging

to make it look beautiful and make it match with the rest of the house.

Whoa, this is a change as well.

And what changed would that be?

- Ah, the cabinets were supposed to be black. - Uh-huh.

I don't think the X is gonna look good in here anymore,

I think it's gonna look too harsh.

This was... this was actually probably one of the most shocking ones,

for me, and happens to be my friends, so it's even more funny.

Okay, so Jared's dad had a countertop guy

and showed us this slab and it was so beautiful

that we decided to run it up the backsplash, too,

and then after that decided to carry it

into the butler pantry area and just keep it light and bright in there, too.

I'm basically thinking like a piece of furniture with a vessel sink,

with a light oak, like the flooring.

and we still have workers throughout the entire house.

When they told us that they wanted us out

and didn't want to give us any more extensions,

like, literally, I just made everybody push way harder

so that we could get in

and so that we didn't have to live through so much in the construction.

With Jared and Marissa back in the house with their kids,

it's time to pull everything together

so they can finally enjoy their finished home.

I'm headed out of town with the kids for a week,

so James is stopping by to go over all the final details.

After almost ten months and a lot of ups and downs,

Jared and Marissa's house is finally finished.

But first, James is putting on the final touches,

I know they're gonna love it.

I love how modern it turned out.

I really do like our new style way better.

It definitely seems more energetic and light.

This kitchen has totally transformed.

It went from an old-school, dark, Mediterranean space,

to a light-and-bright, modern kitchen.

I love having the more streamlined hood

that we have in now.

I just like how it doesn't sit so low

and it makes the kitchen seem so much more open.

Once we saw the marble on the countertop,

it just looked so beautiful, to run it up just kind of made sense.

So that's why we bet on that.

Yeah, I just thought it would look

cleaner if it just,

the countertop and the backsplash was all one

and it just went all the way up the wall.

I love it.

The stone that Christina helped us pick out is gorgeous

and it sparkles when the sun hits it.

It just made it so bright and symmetrical.

Before, you know, the fireplace is off to the side

and the TV, and now everything is just kind of makes sense.

The slider doors have been just a game changer for the room,

just opened that space up so much.

The powder bath turned out amazing.

It's so bright and I just, I love everything in there.

So pretty and clean.

Feel like I'm in a cave.

Yeah, yeah, like a grotto that you can wash your hands.

In Jared and Marissa's bathroom,

we swapped out the dark materials

for a lighter and brighter feel,

and added a floor that's anything but basic,

and it feels like a spa that you aren't afraid to use.

I'm so glad Christina came to help with the bathroom upstairs.

The design of the floor is so fun and out of our comfort zone

and yet, I love it.

Christina chose a black and white

and I was so bummed that it was sold out,

but the one we ended up with was very similar.

I was worried about the floors when Christina showed it to us,

to begin with, because I thought that maybe it would be too busy,

but I actually really do love it.

And it's just such a cool, modern,

you know, just a different vibe in that whole bathroom

that it just makes me happy when I walk in there.

I smile, like, I just am happy.

It was rough to live through and we were so bummed

and it kind of hurt to like rip everything out,

but now being back in there,

it just feel like it's exactly what I wanted.

We are so grateful for Christina's help.

We could not have done it without her.

So now that the travertine's out,

what do you think of this floor?

I mean, look, I like the travertine,

I still like it, but I like the wood floors better now.

- Huh, better? - I do, yeah, I like them better.

Huh, I didn't know if you'd ever admit it,

like, I knew you thought that

but I just didn't know if you'd admit it.

Well, I like them, I mean, it's a little different now

because our kids aren't riding their motorcycles inside the house.

This started out as a tough break for Jared and Marissa,

but they turned that around and created the house of their dreams.

And I'm so glad I was able to help them out along the way.
