As a working mom, I've learned that the best way

to get things done is to multitask.

I have Brayden today, and with our crazy living situation

and our crowded rental,

my meeting with a potential client

and mom turned into a play date at the park.

What does he do for work?

He's in finance, so he's very

buttoned up during the week.

This is kind of more my project that I wanted to get done

before we had the second baby.

We've been together about five years.

We've been married just over two.

We were on vacation one time, and I asked him

what he liked about me, and he said,

"You're hot. You're fun, and you're cool."

Yeah.

I run the ship at home.

I joke she's, you know, in charge

of household operations, where I'm in charge of finance.

So the problem is, the kitchen,

it has dark cherrywood.

- Yeah. - There's been a few owners,

so it's just kind of mix-and-match.

- Yeah. - And nothing flows.

What are you looking to spend?

Budget is between $40,000 and $50,000.

I think that's a good enough number to start with, hopefully.

Yep. I would love to work on the project with you.

When are you guys looking at actually getting started?

I'm cooking fast. Yep.

So as long as you can get it done in the next 10 weeks,

that's my time line. Yeah.

That's definitely cutting it very close,

but, I mean, it can definitely be done

as long as nothing comes up in the process.

When we're trying to cook dinner,

you basically just have this space

to chop your vegetables.

Yeah, we tend to bunch up right here chopping everything.

And we're just, like, elbow to elbow.

With small children, I feel like this is dangerous.

It should be moved.

I think we should shift the refrigerator

to where the oven is, and then we can put a nice

combination of a stove and a cooktop right here,

and then we can shift the pantry to this wall.

Oh! You can have

the coffee set up, your coffee machine.

You can use uppers to put

the coffees away and everything else,

and it'd just be, like, your little area.

And wine glasses.

Eric and Sunshine have about $50,000

to spend on this kitchen, which I think is totally doable,

but since we don't have a ton of time,

is actually less stressful than my current living situation.

Mother-in-law and family helped us.

Living with the mother-in-law

has been better than expected,

but, you know, it comes with a couple little trade-offs.

We're in separate rooms.

I'm in a twin bed that I grew up in.

There's a dog that we have to deal with on a daily basis.

It's keeping him away from our bedroom,

so he's not peeing on the carpet

and humping anything.

A very gentle, very loving dog.

Just a bit romantic.

Romantic.

Okay. So let the fun begin.

I brought some design materials.

So I went with the really mid-century-modern look

with also a little bit of a modern flair.

Okay.

So I couldn't find the exact cabinet I'm looking for,

but I'm thinking along the line of this color but flat-panel.

Sounds great. Love flat-panel look.

And I was thinking a white quartz countertop.

Very durable for kids.

You can spill things on it.

You can do whatever you want, and it lasts forever.

That was my next question.

Glass of wine, bottle of milk...

- Mm-hmm. - Yep.

Lastly, to give this kitchen some flair...

backsplash.

- The fun part. - Wow.

- That's cool. - It has that geometric

really '50s mid-century look,

and I think it really ties everything together.

Color looks perfect.

- The flooring. - Yeah.

The flooring is, I mean, like...

I was so excited when I saw this flooring.

Feel it. It's very heavy.

Yeah.

It's porcelain, very durable.

So we would put this through the whole house?

What I was thinking is, we could lay it

herringbone style in the kitchen and dining room.

Then the rest of the house,

we could just lay it the normal style.

I love it. The black.

All the furniture will pop.

I do like it, I just feel like it's going to be

Sometimes, you get stuck in the middle of them

not seeing eye-to-eye,

and it's my job to find a compromise.

I have an idea.

How about we definitely do it

in the dining room and the kitchen,

and I can go pull another sample or two

that will look amazing with the combination of this

that we can do throughout the rest of the house?

To split up the flooring?

Yes. Luckily, there's a very fine,

easy defined transition across these two rooms,

so I think it'll look totally nice,

especially when this one is laid in herringbone.

It'll be very easy to do the rest of the house.

As long as you think it will transition well.

I'm headed to Eric and Sunshine's house.

They have a big idea for their home,

and they want to run it by me.

You never know what you're going to get in cases like this.

Sometimes, clients come up with crazy ideas,

and I never know what to expect.

We want to create an open living space

with bi-fold doors really running

the length of this back wall.

- Wow. - Just take the whole wall out.

What do you think?

I mean, I love where your head is at,

and it would be very mid-century modern,

but I've done this in the past,

and it's really expensive.

You're talking about support beams and structure,

and, honestly, all in, you're looking at, like,

$60,000.

Oh, I think I'm getting contractions.

I think I have a solution.

Instead of doing a giant set of doors,

to save money and not have to do all the structural stuff

with the beams and the support,

I think we can do one big set here,

and then on this wall, we can do a whole nother set.

and really make them work.

The space has really come to life.
