Original subtitles

Once upon a time,

there were three little girls who went to the police academy...

Two in Los Angeles,

the other in San Francisco...

And they were each assigned very hazardous duties.

But I took them away from all that, and now they work for me.

My name is Charlie.

Mr. Chadway, your agent, George Wales...

You say that he put in a call to you from Vail, Colorado, yesterday morning,

but when you got to the phone, he had hung up.

Yes, and he didn't return to his room at the lodge last night.

You said George Wales was working on a case...

that involved a high government official.

He thought someone might try and kidnap Carl Hansworth.

What kind of information did he have...

that made him think Hansworth would be kidnapped?

He heard a rumor, and I sent him to Vail to investigate.

How do we keep me away from these, uh, kidnappers, whoever they are?

I think maybe the best way to find out who they are...

would be for one of us to act as a sort of a companion to you.

- You mean, like, girlfriend? - Well, yeah, whatever.

That's a good plan. I nominate you.

I accept the nomination.

She'll be armed at all times.

- Mr. Bosley, I assume you can handle a gun? - You assume correctly.

Well, good. Then you and Mr. Hansworth's secretary can play the same game.

I beg your pardon?

Are you not convinced that someone's trying to kidnap you?

Then you're willing to back off? Get out of Vail?

No. I'm not gonna turn and run.

- Are you gonna go ahead with the competition? - That's why I came here.

- Hold on! - Go ahead!

What are you doin' here?

Uh, there was shooting.

He was curious.

I followed him.

I thought I could help perhaps.

I'm still curious. Who were they?

We don't know. Do you?

Uh, how could I know?

Hey, what's going on here?

You don't know what's going on here?

I'm just a bystander... An observer.

I don't suppose you know who he is either.

He's number 41.

We better find out why he's here.

Oh, that's easy.

He's after you... he and the two that we chased down the hill.

One way or the other, they're gonna get you.

Okay, here's to our game of blindman's bluff.

Well, not totally blind. He just got back from Denver. We got something on Paolo.

Where's Norton? Norton's staying in Denver.

He'll use the facilities at our district office.

Charlie received the wirephoto and ran it through N.C.I.C.

Did he get a name? No.

So he tried Interpol, and he connected. Full name: Paolo Donettelli.

Born in Rome, 1950. Stayed out of trouble until he entered the university,

where he joined a small group of radicals...

who called themselves the Patriots for a Free Society.

Has a nice ring to it.

A familiar ring. You've heard of them?

I think they staged a demonstration while I was in Rome.

How long ago was that?

Two years ago. I remember the incident too.

- What were you doing in Rome? - Attending a U.N. conference on international banking.

Do you remember anything about the demonstration?

Well, not much. I recall seeing a banner in the streets,

uh, "Patriots for a Free Society."

Then the Rome police came and broke it up. Nothing earth-shattering.

Perhaps this Paolo Donettelli being a part of the group is just a coincidence.

And maybe it's not.

I'm gonna ask you again.

Pull out of the competition,

go back to Washington, and give us a chance to clear this up.

Chadway, I told you before. I won't give in to terrorism.

Besides, if I run now, it'll be just something we'll have to face later.

At least here, now, we're making some progress.

He does have a point.

I think if Carl's willing, we should go ahead with it.

Well, you mean, you're gonna let me put you on skis again tomorrow?

Uh-huh. If you throw in dinner.

Okay, we go ahead with it.

Sabrina? Yeah?

You concentrate on Paolo, uh, Donettelli.

The rest of us will stay within shouting distance of each other at all times.

Okay. We'll see where it gets us.

Have you ever seen a mountain full of fireflies?

I beg your pardon? Come on.

Elizabeth, call the president's secretary. Give

her the latest figures on the U.N. benefit.

Then prepare a news release tomorrow morning.

And be sure some of the well-known senators' names are mentioned, all right?

Beige.

What?

Tonight at dinner, a beige dress.

Do you have one?

Well, as a matter of fact, I do.

But how did you know?

Well, beige would bring out your softer,

more provocative side.

How do you know I have a softer,

more provocative side?

How do you know you don't?

Maybe we should, uh, find out.

Beige?

Beige.

Mountain full of fireflies.

You do have style, Mr. Hansworth.

Thank you, Miss Garrett.

How did we get back to, uh, "Mr. Hansworth" and "Miss Garrett"?

I don't know.

Perhaps we're getting cautious.

Why cautious?

Maybe we've, uh, realized that you're here to protect me, and I'm,

well, beginning to feel protective about you.

I must say, you do live up to your press.

My press?

Yes. The up-and-coming young politico, high in the president's favor...

and veritable lady-killer on Capitol Hill.

Do you always believe what you read? No.

But I believe what I see,

and I see a mountain full of fireflies,

French champagne, dinner under the stars.

Yes, you do have style, Mr. Hansworth.

And you're looking for someone with less style...

and more substance.

I'm not looking for anything.

I take it as it comes and always give it my best shot.

And you don't ask for promises.

I'm a grown-up girl these days.

Am I getting "yes" for an answer?

I didn't hear a question.

All right. I'll leave it all up to you.

- You'll leave what up to me? - Questions and answers.

Ah.

I'll keep that in mind.

You keep looking and looking and looking,

but the film always projects the same image.

I watch it,

so I will not forget what it was like.

If you must keep watching it to remember,

perhaps it would be best to forget.

We tried to take Hansworth, and we failed.

Perhaps it is best to give up, for the moment at least.

When we were sitting in prison all together...

those past two years, you didn't speak of giving up.

I know, but it's getting very complicated.

There isn't only Chadway and his men.

Now somehow, these girls seem to be involved.

Yes, that's true.

So, we will not make another move on Hansworth...

until we learn exactly who they are...

and why they are with him.

Tomorrow, stay close to the one called Sabrina,

so we'll have a man in the enemy camp, yes?

Yes, Papa.

It seems that the one called Sabrina,

is also a competitor.

So it seems.

When she finishes her run, make your move.

We'll be close behind you.

Ladies and gentlemen,

the preliminary slalom heats will continue in a few moments.

Hi. You sure you're up for this?

I'm gonna give him a run for his money.

I'm sure she will. Let's go.

You don't like him much, do ya?

I've spent the last 10 years of my life protecting button-down types,

with their glib tongues and an overdose of ambition.

Oh, I don't know. He seems like he wants to do good and noble deeds.

Why should you care?

Well, if you can't figure that out,

you're pretty sad.

In the left-hand course, as you face the hill,

a late entry in the competition: Sabrina Duncan.

Racing with her in the right-hand course: Carl Hansworth.

And they're out of the gate,

with Duncan getting a slightly slow start.

As they speed into the upper part of the

course, Hansworth leads Duncan by a few yards.

Now Duncan begins to make up time she lost on the start,

gains slightly on Hansworth's lead.

And they're both wide open now, right through the gates.

They've got their rhythm, both skiing beautifully, head-to-head.

Their intermediate time is... is good. Good enough to be among the leaders.

Now as Duncan and Hansworth move into the lower part of the course,

Hansworth holds a slight edge.

They continue to hold their intermediate times, and they're still head-to-head.

If they hold this pace, they will make it to the next series of elimination heats.

Down toward the finish line,

Duncan and Hansworth dead even and skiing beautifully.

Starting for the finish now, through the last series of gates,

their intermediate time puts them among the leaders and they're still holding even.

And at the finish, it's Hansworth.

Duncan is a very close second, very close. And they are among the leaders.

Each will proceed to the next elimination heat.

That was very nice.

You were terrific! You were sensational!

- Marvelous! - Thank you. I'll have to come in second all the time.

- Excuse me. - Did you get anything on Paolo?

Norton called from Denver. He's got some more information from Interpol.

- Like what? - Well, Paolo Donettelli's father, Vincenti Donettelli...

He was also a member of Patriots for a Free Society.

Where is this Vincenti character now?

I'd guess he's right here, shooting at us.

Good guess. Since Norton found out that Vincenti Donettelli...

and fellow Patriot, Franco Sorella, spent two years in prison...

as a result of that incident in Rome.

Maybe we're making some progress.

Norton's getting wirephotos of Vincenti Donettelli and this Franco Sorella.

He'll send them on a plane from Denver in two or three hours.

I'll pick them up at the airport.

Oh, uh, speaking of Paolo Donettelli.

Hi. Hi.

I saw your run. You did well. Thank you.

Listen, there is a lovely place high on the ridge,

away from the crowd.

I have some wine, bread and cheese.

That sounds like a picnic.

Well, it's a good way to relax between the competitions.

That sounds like an invitation.

Probably because it is. Oh, well,

then the invitation to the picnic is accepted. All right.

- I'll see you in the room in an hour, huh? - Take care.

Beautiful spot.

You appreciate?

Very much.

It pleases me that you can appreciate simple things.

It seems, these days, very few people can.

Oh, I don't know if that's necessarily true, Mr. Donettelli.

You know my name.

Yeah.

How?

Well, does it really make any difference?

I suppose not. Why did you learn my name?

Maybe I was hoping you'd invite me on a picnic.

She's lying.

We have not used the name Donettelli since we arrived here.

It seems we were right.

The lady is not what she appears to be.

So it seems.

We'll take her now.

What else do you know about me, besides my name?

Well, not very much, but I'd like to know more.

Such as?

Well, I don't know. Uh, where do you live?

I was born in Rome.

Family?

My mother died years ago.

My father was a professor of economics at the University of Rome.

Ah. Has he retired now? No.

His professorship was taken away from him.

Oh. What for?

He had begun to recognize the corruption...

of the international banking conglomerates...

and speak up against them. What happened to him?

He continued to speak out against the conspiracy.

When I attended the university, I also made my feelings felt... loudly.

Well, that could get ya into hot water.

Yes, it can. It did.

There was an incident. My father and some of his friends were imprisoned.

It's made you very angry, hasn't it?

I feel anger for those who have hurt my father.

Well, it seems to me that your father is a victim of the times,

and, uh, there's really no one you can blame for that, is there?

- Yes, there is. - Who could you possibly blame?

His name does not matter!

But he represents the corruption...

that has hurt my father and millions of people like him.

Where are you going?

I think we have some matters to discuss, Miss Duncan.

She said she'd be gone an hour?

- That was about 10:00. - Well, it's past noon.

Relax, Chadway. The lady just went on a picnic.

With our only suspect.

And that was the plan, wasn't it?

- That she should get close to Paolo, right? - Right.

Well, let's just give it a few minutes. She'll show up.

- And if she doesn't show? - She will.

Has Miss Duncan returned yet?

I don't recall seeing her, and she hasn't picked up her room key yet.

Oh, there's mail for Mr. Hansworth.

Would you like to take it to him?

Um, yes, I would. Thank you.

Good-bye.

- What? - I said, good-bye.

Are you leaving? No. But you are.

You know, sooner or later, you're going to have to declare your independence...

of Mr. Carl Hansworth.

And personally, I'd prefer it to be sooner.

I'm afraid it's going to have to be later, John.

What's wrong?

"Mr. Hansworth, we have Sabrina Duncan.

"We want you.

"If you are unwilling to make the trade, she will...

"Die in your place.

Patriots for a Free Society."

Anyone else for a picnic?

Chadway, I didn't send her off with him.

And you didn't try and stop her either!

- It wasn't my place to stop her. - It was Sabrina's job to go.

And if it hadn't been Sabrina, it would have been Kelly or Bosley or me.

Let's stop pointing fingers, okay?

My phone, remember?

- Hello. - Carl Hansworth, please.

- This is he speaking. - Have you received our letter?

Yes, I have received your letter.

We do not want to harm Miss Duncan. We want you.

Are you willing to negotiate a trade?

I don't know what you want with me,

but I don't want that young lady hurt, so I'll do whatever you say.

Are you aware of the limousine service in Vail?

- Yes. - Call them.

Tell them to have a limousine waiting for you at the covered bridge...

in one hour.

Tell the driver to take you to Denver.

Somewhere along the road you will be signaled.

Tell the driver to stop.

Get out. Pay him.

And send him back to Vail.

Is that clear?

Yes. You will be watched at all times.

If you call the authorities,

if you have Mr. Chadway or his men or Miss Garrett...

or Miss Munroe or Mr. Bosley following you,

Miss Duncan will be killed.

Is that clear? I understand.

When will she be returned?

Tell her friends to wait at the lodge.

She will be set free,

allowed to go there when we have you safely in our hands.

Any questions?

- No. No questions. - Very well then.

The limousine at the covered bridge in one hour.

Let's hope for your sake he does as he's told.

You'd better start down.

Vincenti, she's not part of this.

I don't want her harmed.

If they do as instructed,

there will be no need for it.

If they do as instructed.

Keep her here till I call.

Then pull the wire out of the phone.

Take her skis and go.

Meet us at the agreed place.

By the time she walks out of the mountain, we will be gone.

Yes, Papa.

Okay.

If I got up and walked out of here, I don't think you'd use the gun.

I hope you're not foolish enough to believe that.

There's nothing to decide. I'll do as I was told, and the rest of you stay out of it.

The president sent me here to protect you,

not turn you over to a bunch of crazies.

What's your alternative? Let them kill Sabrina?

Like you kept telling me,

it's her job to take these risks.

- Yeah. - That's what I said.

Forget what you said.

I'm not gonna let Sabrina die while I crawl off in a corner somewhere.

That's not your decision, Hansworth! Call the limousine service.

It's my life. That makes it my decision.

You're wrong! You're public property, and I've been assigned to protect you.

We're all assigned to protect him, and we've almost blown it.

But we haven't blown it yet.

Let's just calm down, and maybe we can

figure something out. And stop wasting time.

We've got 40 minutes before Carl is supposed to meet the limousine...

at the covered bridge. Hello?

Okay, so we set up an observation perimeter around the covered bridge.

To observe what?

Except for Paolo and the two we can't identify,

we don't even know who they are or what they look like.

Well, Norton called again from Denver.

He sent wirephotos of Vincenti Donettelli,

and their friend, Franco Sorella.

I've got Bannock waiting out at the airport

to pick 'em up the minute the plane arrives.

Fine. But we don't know if they're the ones we're dealing with.

Apparently, there are more than just a few Patriots for a Free Society.

Which means, if we go in the street,

they can see us, but we can't see them.

Which brings us back to that one inevitable fact:

I've got to go alone,

and the rest of you stay here until Sabrina gets back.

If... she gets back.

The limousine'll be at the covered bridge in 40 minutes.

You don't have to do this.

You have a choice. You don't have to go along with your father.

I do what I do by choice.

Out of loyalty?

Because I believe what he believes.

Yeah.

Oppression of international banking, right?

You wouldn't understand.

I probably wouldn't.

I'd just like to be sure that you do, 'cause...

I know that sometimes causes like this become distorted and people get confused.

This is clear to me.

Why do you want Carl Hansworth?

He'll be made an example of.

- How? - My father will see to it.

- You don't really understand yourself, do you? - I know what I feel.

Well, I'm sure you feel something, and uh...

I know you know the rhetoric, and I know it sounds good, but...

sometimes when history looks back on things like this,

they're well-intentioned, but they're misconceived.

What my father has said has meaning.

No. It had meaning.

In the beginning, I'm sure it had meaning.

But it doesn't anymore.

It doesn't mean anything anymore.

'Cause when you need a gun to sell a cause,

it's just a lot of empty words.

I'm right, and you know I'm right.

Sit down.

I won't sit down, and you won't shoot me.

I will, if I have to.

Hi, could you get me the Lodge please?

Yes, it's an emergency.

Sorry, sir, this car is engaged.

I know, I am Mr. Hansworth. I decided to walk over.

Here, let me get the door for you, sir.

Hello. Elizabeth, it's Sabrina. Could I Speak to Kelly, please?

Sabrina, are you all right?

- I'm all right. Could I speak to Kelly, please? - Yes.

Sabrina, where are you?

I'm at the top of the mountain, in a... in a line shack. Listen, uh, where's Carl?

He just walked out of here.

They threatened to kill you if we tried to interfere. All right. I'm okay.

You see if you can stop him, all right? I'm on the way down.

- How did you know... - I'll tell you about it when I get there.

Okay. Carl's supposed to get into a limousine...

at the covered bridge in, uh, six minutes.

All right. I gotcha.

Excuse me.

Excuse me.

Whoa!

We move when it reaches us. Yeah, I'll play pedestrian and slow him down.

Bosley, play carefully, will ya? Oh, yeah.

I'll take the other side of the road. You two watch for my move.

Okay, but let's move quickly.

Somewhere someone's watching us.

Okay, let's go.

Hey! Hey, where are you going with my snowmobile?

Miss Garrett? Yes? Get down!

I have the wirephotos Norton sent from Denver.

Kelly, the driver.

Bosley!

Shoot the tire.

Get out of the car.

Here.

I'm shot!

Somebody call the police!

Papa!

Come on.

Papa.

Oh, Papa.

You were right.

Suddenly, it's all meaningless.

It all signifies nothing.

Nothing.

Tell the president I'll see him sometime tomorrow afternoon.

I'll call you as soon as I know. Right.

I just surrendered my key, so I... You and I, we...

We begin without ever getting started.

Well, like I said, you're a man with very little time.

Kelly, I... I really wish that weren't true.

So do I.

I could get used to having you around.

A lady who needs a lot of attention.

Shall we?

Okay.

Hope you enjoyed your stay. Yeah.

Well, you know, you've made these few days quite memorable.

Then it is possible, isn't it? What?

That I am more than...

some sort of dedicated, unfeeling machine.

Yes, yes.

But since you have made that discovery, there is something that you have to do.

What's that?

Never let anyone turn you into...

a dedicated, unfeeling machine again, ever.

Promise?

I promise.

Come on.

I'm really gonna miss this place.

Nice habit you have. What's that?

Looking up. Well, it is beautiful.

I didn't mean that.

I mean you in general.

You always look for something positive.

I envy you that.

You don't have to envy anybody.

It's all out there, all the good stuff.

You really believe that, don't you?

Yep. I really believe that.

Maybe you should try it.

Yeah, maybe I should.

Thank you.

So long. Good-bye.

Think there's anything you could do for Paolo?

No, there's really nothing that, uh...

I'll see what I can do for him. Thanks a lot.

Thank you.

Well, hello.

And good-bye.

Yeah.

I'll uh... I'll call you.

All right.

To the airport, my dear fellow.

Easy, boys.

Elizabeth, I want you to call the president's secretary...

to see if she received that guest list we sent her.

Then I want you to call each of the senators...

and find out how many are going to attend.

Then we'd better sit down and map out the itinerary for the next few days.

Elizabeth, did you hear me?

I heard you. Well?

I'll attend to all those things, just a little bit later.

- Right now there are some things I want to do. - What?

I want to get my hair done, my nails,

buy some clothes, might even buy another beige dress.

Elizabeth, what's come over you?

I guess you could say, I've met a friend.
