- Welcome to Hickory Hollow!
It's mighty peaceful here.
That's because we Amish lead a simple life,
and we like it that way.
Our focus is on more important things
than buying the latest fashions,
or keeping with whatever congress or the president is doing.
We're called plain people.
We rise early, work hard, and try our best
to live out our faith with as few distractions as possible.
Now, I've heard tell that some folks
don't think much happens on an Amish farm.
Especially an old order Amish farm, like Hickory Hollow.
But, I'm here to tell you that nothing could be
further from the truth.
Life here has a way of twisting and turning
and sometimes exposing long-held secrets.
Just as it does in most other places,
only we don't talk about it much.
Outside our own community that is. [laughing]
[audience laughing]
But, every so often, a secret comes along
that, well, seems to take on a life of its own.
The secret I'm fixin' to tell you about
was that kind of secret.
And it all started, as most secrets do,
with every good intention.

- Well then you need to stop your writing
and eat something.
- I must get my thoughts down, Rosie.
My journals may be the only way
my daughter ever gets to know me,
and I want her to know how much I love her,
especially since I may not see my 40th birthday.
- Now we'll have none of that talk.
We need you around here.
Besides, you've done all you can do
to find your daughter.
Now you just have to trust.
You've been seeking.
You're going to find.
The Bible says seek and you'll find.
- I do believe that, Rosie,
but I hope it's soon.
Has there been no word, no calls?
- Well, Mr. Bennet's been on the phone
most of the day, so if he had heard,
I'm sure he'd say something.
- Yes, surely.
- Why don't I take you to the rose garden?

- Think about what you're doing, Katie!
- I have, Mary.
- But, but what if your parents are right,
and this is an act of rebellion,
and you get yourself shunned?
- Then so be it.
- So be it?
Katie, you're not thinking clearly.
Too much has happened.
You need to stop and sort it all out
before making any decisions,
especially one as big as this!
- I don't want to miss the opportunity
to get to know the one who gave me my life!
- But what if you're risking losing the one

It was from your birth mother.

So then you know her name?

and I burned it.
Oh, Katie.
Can you ever forgive me?
- Mama, do you at least remember the address?
The town?
Did you even notice the state, Mama?
- It was New York.
I'm sure of it.
And it, it seems like there was something
about Canada in the address, too.
- Well, which was it?
New York or Canada?
It can't be both, Mama.
- I'm trying, I'm trying to remember,
I truly am.
- Mama, please.
It's important.
If the letter said she was very ill,
then we may not have much time.
Try to remember anything, Mama.
- Laura.

I'm sure of it.

I am sorry.
But I've told you everything I know.
There are no more secrets.
- Well, what do you think the bishop will do
if she leaves?
- I don't know.
But her actions surely will have consequences.

[audience laughing] - Please!
I,
I need to talk to you, Mary.
- I said don't come any closer!
- Please hear me out, Mary.
- Don't take another step, whoever,
or whatever you are!
- I'm Daniel!
And I'm very much alive.
But I sure don't blame you for being skeptical.
Like everyone else, you probably assumed
I was dead, too.
- Yeah, that's usually what folks do
when they attend your funeral!
- Well, as you can see, [laughing]
I didn't drown.
- It's been two years.
If you are Daniel Fisher, and you didn't drown,
you sure took a long time swimming back to shore.
[audience laughing]
- I know what I did to all of you wasn't right.
I lied, Mary.
To my parents, to Katie, to all of you.
I allowed you to think I had drowned
instead of confessing the truth,
that I was wanting to leave the plain life.
I'd been pondering on it for months,
but I didn't want to put Katie,
or my parents through a shunning, so,
when my boat capsized, I figured that was
my opportunity to go away,
and not cause anyone any pain.
- We'd rather grieve a shunning than a death, Daniel.
You have no idea how many tears we've cried over you,
and Katie,
Daniel.
You broke her heart.
- I feel the worst about Katie.
- You could have written to someone
and told them you were alive.
She never got over you, Daniel.
Never.
She's paid a high price for her love.
It's a cruel thing you've done, Daniel Fisher.
Cruel!
Cruel! [Daniel yelps]
Thing! [audience laughing]
- Okay!
- Where have you been all this time?
[Daniel groans]
- I've gone to school!
I played my music.
And I spent time learning to hear God's voice
and discerning what he wanted for me.
But there wasn't a moment
when I didn't think about Katie Lapp.
I must ask her forgiveness.
Where is she, Mary?
At the schoolhouse?
- She no longer lives here, Daniel.
- Oh.
Well, has she moved away to another community?
Has she married?
- Oh, Daniel.
Katie's been shunned.
- Shunned?
Shunned for what?
No one's as good and pure as Katie Lapp.
- Rebellion.
She went against her parents' wishes
and left the community in search of her birth mother.
- Her, her birth mother?
What do you mean?
Rebecca's her mother.
- Daniel, Katie's adopted.
- Adopted?
But Katie never told me she was adopted-
- She didn't even know herself until recently.
Her parents kept it a secret from her
all these years.
- Oh.
Mary.
I must go to her.
Do you know anything of her whereabouts?
Will you help me find her?
- Daniel, it might not be so easy.
- Well surely you have a, an address,
a phone number, something.
- I do have an address.
But if I were Katie, I'd have a hard time forgiving you.
Do you deserve forgiveness, Daniel?
- I don't know.
Maybe not.
But aren't we all looking for forgiveness we don't deserve?
After all this time, she's still the only one
I've ever loved.
And I pray that she still loves me.
- I'll go get that address.

I've just come from the bishop's house.

- I had a good long talk with the bishop,
and I confessed that it was our secrecy
that caused this turmoil in the first place,
and how we feel the shunning was too harsh,
and Rebecca, God has moved on his heart.
The bishop said that under the circumstances,
Katie's actions wouldn't be considered rebellion.
He's spoken with the church, and he's lifting the shunning!
