You've chosen the title for your book.
Now let's choose categories for your book
to be placed in.
The categories on Kindle and the
categories on physical books are a little bit different.
When you first upload your book, you get to choose two categories.
You can come back later and suggest additional categories to Amazon, and
we'll cover that next.
Now, when you're choosing your
categories, there's three rules that I'd like to give you number one you.
Want to choose categories that have a good number of searches.
That means that when you look at the category, and you especially look at the
at the books that come up on top of that category, you know number one number two
number three. If you look at their sales ranks, they
have a good sales rank on Amazon, and that means that they're selling a certain
number of books on average per day.
You want to make sure that the categories
actually have traffic that you choose.
At the same time, you want to make sure
that you're able to rank in those categories, because if you look through
all the books.
And if you go down to position number ten
or position number twenty and it's still super competitive, for example, maybe the
book in number twenty is actually written by an author that's on TV all the time
wow that means that network, that category is like super competitive.
It's going to be hard to rank in that category.
Yeah, you know, it's probably not one that you want to go after.
At the same time, you want it to be relevant to your book because you don't
just want to get your book listed.
The category you don't want to show U
number ten if you're not selling any books.
You want to make sure that you're not only selling books inside of this
category, but you're attracting your ideal client for the back end.
So we're going to go over and we're going to look at categories real quick.
And before we do that, I want to recommend Kindle Preneur because they
have a calculator that it helps you figure out the sales.
And I mentioned it earlier and I mentioned it again here here.
So let's say, let's say that you find a Kindle book and it's ranked 80000
thousand overall. On amazon well, if we put it in here,
that means they're probably selling about three books per day.
Ok, that's interesting.
So we know they're selling about three
books per day.
That'll help us with our numbers.
Let's refresh it and let's say, OK, well, let's say that we find somebody who's in
category 30000, thousand so the thirtieth thousand of the book, well, they're
probably selling 10 books per day.
So this is just a wild estimate, but it
gives us an idea as we're searching through how many books per day we can
expect to be selling, you know, if these are our direct competitors.
And we do a good job against our competitors.
So let's go over and look at categories on Amazon.
I'm over at the Amazon bestsellers list, and you can get here just by searching
Google for Amazon bestsellers, and you'll end up finding this.
And then I navigated down to the Kindle Store and Kindle ebooks.
Well, from here you can see that we have all these big major categories.
Well, if we click over here on the left and we click on health, fitness and
dieting. Then we're going to see additional
categories. And look, we can go deeper.
So we're still a little too broad.
So if we're in health, fitness and
dieting, let's say that we want to go in nutrition, OK?
So now we're in nutrition.
Now we have the general category of
nutrition. Or if one of these is more relevant, we
could go even deeper.
So if we're talking about food allergies,
we can end up going all the way down here and now we're in the food allergy
section. But, and you notice we have the top 100
paid and you can also look at the top 100 free in the category.
And when I say how well they're selling, let's say we look at number one on the
page. If we go down and see what their sales
rank is, they are 9000 in the store.
So it's not just this category because
remember, they might be selling by keyword searches, they might be selling
by category searches.
They might have their own promotions that
they're doing.
Let's type in.
The 9000 I forget exactly what it was.
We'll do nine thousand one hundred
seventeen books per day is probably what we could expect here and just as a
comparison let's go back and let's drop down to we'll say sixteenth two hundred
and seventy six thousand so two hundred and seventy six thousand and.
And we can see less than a book a day at that low over rank, which of course,
they're lower in the category.
So, but we know what we're in this
category. So if this is what you're selling, maybe
you're in this calorie.
But let's just jump back up to health,
fitness and dieting.
And let's say that you're not nutrition,
maybe you're in personal health.
I'm kind of curious exactly what personal
health is.
Ok, there's Women's Health, there's men
health, there's aging.
Oh, aging is a good market.
Let's go to aging.
Ok. So this is the aging market.
So again, I could do the same thing and check.
How books are selling here? Are they too competitive, you know, to
get lower positions on it? What type of competition do we see here?
At the same time, while you're looking at some of your competitors, you might find
other categories that are relevant.
So if I look here, OK, they're number one
in aging.
We just saw that.
They're also number one in osteoporosis and number one in quick workouts.
They are doing a good job across multiple categories.
And you can see overall in the Kindle score, their number 7000 So they have a
good rank. They're selling a lot of books.
And the ranking number one in all these different categories.
So you can find categories by doing search.
You can also find some categories by looking at this direction, just seeing
what some of the competitors are showing up in and we see we could go there as
well from here and we can see what the quick workouts category looks like.
Here we are.
So you're going to find two categories
that you submit when you first upload your book, then you can come back and you
can request.
Up to 10 total categories.
So another 8 categories you can actually request.
And again, that's up to Amazon's customer support whether they're going to give it
to you or not.
But there's a simple process to ask for
it. So what you'll do is you'll go over to
author. Dot amazon dot com and contact them and,
you're going to want to choose Amazon book Page update Amazon categories when
you ask for additional categories, you.
You're going to want to use the full
category string so that will look something like Kindle store, Kindle
ebooks, business and money, business life, mentoring and coaching.
We take you all the way down to the category of mentoring and coaching.
So you can suggest up to 10 categories total, and you know you might as well go
for all 10 when you do search, as long as they're relevant.
Don't be suggesting things that aren't relevant.
You're just going to get the whole thing kicked back to and they're going to say
no and just as a note.
If they give you a no initially, that
doesn't mean give up.
That means wait a few days, submit on a
different day, perhaps drop a couple of categories that aren't as relevant, maybe
submit a total of eight and see if that gets accepted.
Because a lot of times it just depends on which customer support person you hit.
So the process is really easy.
We go to the Amazon contact us page,
click on Amazon Book page over here.
We're going to update Amazon categories
and then you're going it says what here? What are you updating to?
And then they're telling you which one applies to which add categories in more
than one marketplace.
Check that they're available in each
marketplace because the category might not be available in each marketplace.
And then you can tell them what you want to add it because they've given you very
specific instructions of how to add the categories that you'd like to add.
And it depends.
On which Amazon representative you get.
So if you don't get what you want, try again a little bit later.
Next up is keyword phrases.
You get 7 boxes and up to 50 characters
each for the keyword phrases.
The first few boxes you should focus on
your most desirable keywords.
These are the same keywords that you have
in your title and your subtitle.
These are the ones you really want to go
after. And you're not going to use all 50
characters in those first few boxes, because those are just specific to them.
Then you're going to use the last few.
I'm going to say stuff here, but it's not
keyword stuff because you're not going to repeat the same keyword multiple times,
but you're going to use the last few to stuff additional long tail keyword
phrases and you have 50 characters.
You're going to use almost all 50
characters in each of these boxes.
And you have to remember when you're
dealing with keywords, Amazon uses all variations you type in, in whatever
order. Ok, so it's similar to Google, very broad
match. So if you put this word before, this word
doesn't matter.
Amazon's going to mix them all together
for those keyword phrases.
So just it doesn't matter.
You don't have to go like opposite order of the words or any of that type of
stuff. Just put in the keywords that you want to
show up for.
Use those last few boxes to get a whole
bunch of keyword phrases in that you want to rank for.
And when I say no keyword stuff, that just simply means don't use the same
keyword multiple times.
You know, like weight loss diets, weight
loss secrets, weight loss, intermittent fasting.
Don't keep doing that repeating weight loss like that.
So get the keyword phrases in and then go after it.
