So how are things in the dentistry world?

I've actually been promoted to a dental assistant status.

And you're also like doing classes all the time.

Dentistry is a big part of my family,

so I'm kind of at a crossroads.

My dad is very academic, and he's like,

"The secure route is dentistry."

My mom is, "You do what your heart feels."

So it is pretty stressful being in this position,

'cause my parents' opinions definitely matter.

I just want to make them proud,

and I don't want to go off into the wrong road.

Progressing on "The Voice," it's going to be very big for me.

So that way, I know that I can make it in this industry.

Talia: I was struggling a little bit to find my own voice,

but I resonate with the lyrics in this song so much,

because last year was a bit of a tough year for me.

I had a miscarriage.

My husband, Johnathan, was in Australia, deployed at the time.

Going through that experience, it was hard.

It was lonely.

First time I heard "Like I Can" by Sam Smith,

I just remember that whole day, that song was on repeat.

The lyrics were just things I needed to hear.

It pulled me through.

I'm the last person with a spot.

What a way to complete a team.

It felt like validation when I received that chair turn.

Right now, I'm in the Army,

but being here, my life came back to music.

It just makes me feel like this is exactly where I belong.

With performance, I could not take my eyes off of you.

I feel like you'd be really good with gospel and soul,

but I also think you could do, like, Broadway stuff.

Talia, I think there were, like, a few pitch issues

a couple of times. I feel like this song

is a little bit up-tempo for your style,

but midway point through to the end, you found it,

and all the blends and harms, like, came through really well.

Blake: Talia, when it was time for a big moment,

for some reason, you felt more comfortable there.

But there was a lot of loose ends.

And because of those issues,

I just think Jerome took this battle.

That was phenomenal from both of you.

There was obviously some pitch issues across the board.

It was still an unbelievable performance.

Just a year ago, I came out to some friends.

They really encouraged me to be authentic,

both in my artistry but also in my life,

because of the people that I could impact

that are going through the same thing as me.

And now that I've made it through,

I feel like I'm supposed to be here.

Anxiety has run my life ever since I can remember.

But music's helped me get past a lot of those anxious challenges.

where I didn't know what was happening.

We definitely, like, had a different vibe.

The second time we come in,

we were going more

down chorus beginning portion.

So, musically, should we bring it down just right then

I do think it was strong in rehearsals,

but I was kind of just seeing who I thought would soar.

And I think one of you stood out a little bit more today.

So I'm going to have to say

Kelly: The decision was really hard,

but I ended up picking Rachel

because I feel like she is a consistent singer.

She has just an incredible tone,

Ray: I've been waiting on an opportunity like this

for a really long time.

Growing up in a situation

where there was not security financially,

my mom was a huge inspiration for me.

She really worked hard

to provide everything that we needed.

But for me, being the oldest, like, I kind of did

get to see how hard it was for her to balance everything.

And she always taught me how to just

go out and get it, you know? [ Laughs ]

I really wanted to be doing music,

but right after I finished college,

I got a job offer in Arizona,

so I just kind of went for it.

The route wasn't exactly how I envisioned it,

but now I'm in L.A. on "The Voice,"

doing what I wanted to be here doing,

so that's all that matters.

but the Donny Hathaway version.

The song is one of the first songs I sampled.

I felt like it'd be a good opportunity

to see how they interpret the lyrics

and bring that song to life

and what their choices were going to be.

That's important to figuring them out

as artists and vocalists.

We actually watched your Magnificent Color Book tour.

Just to kind of like pull some of the,

like, stylistically, some of the things you do as a performer.

that's like a neo-neo-soul.

People can underestimate the power

in somebody that's just controlled

and not having a traditional big voice.

Musicianship and choice of dynamics

is like the true sign of like a star

and somebody that we want to see continue to produce music.

I really enjoyed that improvement.
