The government wanted the Yaqui Kid
almost as bad as Wells Fargo
wanted the money back he had stolen.
That's why when the Mexican authorities captured the Kid
and agreed to turn him over to the United States government
to stand trial for murder and worse,
I went along with the cavalry escort
to bring him back to Fort Apache.
In charge of the detail was Sergeant Cobb Tyler.
With him were Trooper Smith,
Trooper Bedell, Corporal Keyhole.
Our prisoner was across the border at Tres Alamos.
I'm sorry I cannot furnish you with an escort back to the border.
With the Apaches raiding in this district,
my men are on the saddle 20 hours a day.
TYLER: We don't need no help to take back one miserable Indian.
OFFICER: All I can say is he's a Yaqui,
and even the Apaches fear them.
What is this, a joke?
OFFICER: No, senor. It is Rita, his wife.
She came to join him when we captured him.
And you let her?
She held a knife to her heart
and swore she would use it if we refused.
The Yaquis don't break their word.
It's a part of their religion.
You mean... we've gotta take her back
to Fort Apache with him?
I won't do it.
Then she'll be dead
by the time our horses are out of sight.
Who cares?
I do, for one.
All right.
But remember, she'll keep up,
or we'll leave her behind.
TYLER: And I'll make it clear right now, Yaqui.
If there are any tricks,
killing a Yaqui woman won't bother me one bit.
What's the matter, Mr. Hardie,
you gettin' a case of the nerves?
Maybe so.
But then we've been followed
every step of the way
since we left Tres Alamos.
I haven't seen any sign.
They wouldn't be Yaquis if you could see them.
One thing for sure,
there's not more than two or three of them,
or we'd never have gotten this far.
Maybe so.
But there's one thing for sure,
they won't get him alive, either.
You hear me, Yaqui?
If he understands English,
there's nothing he'd rather do right now
than put a knife in you.
You sound like you'd enjoy that, Mr. Hardie.
Maybe we ought to get something straight.
I'm here for one reason...
To try to get back the money
the Yaqui Kid stole from Wells Fargo.
You think he'll tell you
where he'd buried it just like that?
Maybe not.
But it's my job to keep him alive
so if he ever feels like talkin',
he can.
I'll bring him in, Mr. Hardie,
if I can.
But before I let him get away,
I'll put a bullet in his head.
You remember that, will ya?
Keyhole. Yeah.
Take a look around up there.
Separating your men in Yaqui country
is one way not to live to a ripe old age, Sergeant.
TYLER: I'll ask for your advice if I need it, Mr. Hardie.
That's my water, sweetheart. Why waste it?
That Indian's as good as dead.
Now, you're gonna need a man to look out after you.
That Fort Apache's a rough place.
Now, you be nice to me,
and I'll be nice to you.
Leave the girl alone.
I don't see any stripes in your arm, Hardie.
I don't need any stripes.
Only two kinda men boss me around, Hardie.
Them that outrank me,
and them that can out-fight me.
That's enough, Bedell!
Keep him away from that girl.
That's my business!
Leave the prisoners alone.
And the next time you pick a fight,
pick somebody you could beat, would you?
Now you think I tell you
where Wells Fargo gold is.
So you do speak our language.
No, I don't think you'll tell me.
Then why you fight?
Try to keep him alive.
He kept annoying your woman,
she'd eventually stick a knife in his ribs.
We're gonna need him.
White men are stupid.
He will die anyway.
All of you will die.
Not if we can help it.
My men follow you.
I will not be taken
to Fort Apache to be hanged.
You will not be hanged without a trial.
Your law speaks with two tongues-
one for Yaqui, one for white man.
How would you know?
You've never given our laws a chance.
I will not tell you where to find your gold.
I suppose you won't.
But if you ever change your mind, I'll be around.
Smith.
I don't recall relieving you from guard duty.
Corporal Keyhole relieved me.
I told you before, Smith.
I don't care how much gold braid
you wore as a Johnny Reb.
In my outfit,
you'll do your share, the same as the rest
Now get back to your post.
All right, Sergeant.
Kinda tough on the old man, weren't ya?
I got a civilian giving orders,
a rebel colonel as a trooper.
Now, you listen to me, Hardie.
I need you to guide us out of this country.
But I'll run my troop my way,
and I don't need any help from you.
From where I stand, Sergeant,
you need a lot of help.
Sergeant, our horses!
Watch the prisoners!
TYLER: Stay here, Smith!
Dirty, stinkin' devils.
Seems to be only two of 'em.
They've probably been following us all the way,
waiting for their chance.
Any chance of following them
and getting our horses back?
It'd be just what they wanted us to do.
They'd pick their own place
for a showdown.
Then we'll walk out.
And if there's just two of them,
the odds are still in our favor.
I've got a hunch they're not gonna
stay that way, though.
Come on! On your feet!
We'd better take a rest, Sergeant.
All right, take ten.
Bedell. Yeah.
Keep a look out up front.
Yeah.
Ahh.
Just remember that's your water
you're wasting, Mr. Hardie.
The idea was to try to get him back alive.
Your idea, Hardie,
not mine.
TYLER: What was it?
I thought I saw somethin' move.
Well, if you saw somethin', it wasn't a Yaqui.
All right, forget it.
Smith!
Come on.
TYLER: Smith, you move out first.
We don't want to walk into something.
Yes, Sergeant.
All right, you.
Move out.
No, you keep it.
No.
You will need it more than we will.
Aah!
Well, that's one more gone.
Well,
what'd ya find out?
Nothing.
I didn't expect to.
Then why'd you go back?
I didn't think they'd expect
one of us to double back
and wait for them.
But I was wrong.
Maybe you didn't wait long enough.
Maybe you'd like to try your luck.
How much further to the border?
If we don't run into too much difficulty,
we might make it in a couple of days.
Cut me loose and give me your guns,
and I will let you live.
You'd like that, wouldn't you, Yaqui?
Then you'd have it just the way you want it.
There is no other chance for you.
You must know that now.
You shut your mouth, Indian,
or I'll shut it for ya...
for a long time.
Bedell?
Yeah.
You take the first watch.
And wake up Hardie in two hours.
And keep your eyes open.
You must go now.
If you get past them in the darkness,
they will not follow you.
You mean all of us?
No.
Just you.
If you go now alone, there is a chance.
I will try to keep the Yaqui from following you.
Every man is needed here now.
If they were your people, would you leave them?
Then I am sorry,
for you will die, too.
Our horses!
Come back, Bedell! It might be a trap!
Now the odds are even.
Well, let's get under cover!
JIM: There's no need to worry about that now.
They'll wait and pick us off one at a time.
It's part of the torture.
The Yaqui!
Why did you stop me?!
Is it bad?
Sort of.
There's a wash over there. You think you can make it?
I don't know.
Well, try. I'll cover you.
First Keyhole,
then Smith,
Bedell.
All for nothin'.
I suppose that's all in the way you look at it.
I shoulda killed that stinkin' savage
the first time I saw him.
That would've been smart.
Then in place of havin' two Yaquis after us,
we'd have had the whole Yaqui nation.
But if I could only see one Yaqui.
Just one!
You know, Hardie.
I used to wonder how it would end for me.
Now I know.
But there's one thing for sure.
I wanna take one with me.
Wait!
Come out you dirty, stinkin' red devil!
Let me see you!
Like the sergeant,
I wondered how it might end for me, too,
but there was one difference.
It wouldn't be here and now,
not if I could help it.
Let the man Hardie go.
Let him live.
Hold it, don't turn around!
Throw down your rifle.
You'll have to kill me first!
And that'll be up to you, Yaqui.
I don't wanna kill ya, unless I have to.
JIM: The Yaqui Kid was tried at Fort Apache
and hanged for murder a month later.
Before he died, he told me
where the Wells Fargo money was buried,
and if he had any reason for telling me, I never knew it.
But in his own way,
I think he was trying to make amends to Rita.
For me?
Well, I guess it was just another job.
Somehow, I never quite looked at it that way.
