- NARRATOR: Every state has its folklore,
tall tales and legends.
But sometimes there is a darker story.
A tale not so much told as whispered.
♪
- WOMAN: Taxidermy, is more than just a hobby.
Or a profession.
It's a callin'.
A way to preserve something great...
Forever.
Sebastian Klepppterm-- Mr. Kleppner...
was the best I've ever seen.
I mean, he was nominated for Taxidermist of the Year,
no less than 12 times by Get Stuffed magazine.
He was a local legend,
and my personal hero.
This is the story
about his greatest masterpiece.
And how it became his gravest mistake.
[floor creaking]
[piano music playing]
- Not quite...
There we go, my friend. As good as new.
Better even.
[knock on door]
[knock on door again]
[sighs]
- Jesus! You scared me.
What you need some secret password to get in here or something?
- We're closed.
- Yeah...
Sign says you're open.
Oh.
Touché.
[clear throat] know it's late, but...
I got something in my truck. It's a bit of a time sensitive thing.
- Number's on the sign. You can call that and make an appointment tomorrow.
- You're not listening to me.
You're really gonna wanna see this.
[eerie music playing]
[sighs]
- Where did you say you hit this?
- A few miles outside Tillamook.
Came out of nowhere.
In all my years living in these parts, I have never see anything like this.
I mean...
look at the claw on that thing.
- All right.
Help me get this inside.
- MAN: Ooh, that is ripe. [laughs]
- Did you hit this with all four tires of your car?
- Uh... Yeah.
Yeah, I got this son of a gun real good.
Oh.
Whoa.
- This is awesome.
And I've never seen my fair share of stuffed critters before,
but this is on a whole new level here.
- Careful.
The glue on that hasn't cured yet.
- Yeah.
- You know, don't touch anything.
- Yeah, cool.
If you'd known any better, you'd swear that these things were still alive.
- Well, that is the point, isn't it?
- What? To fool people into thinking some of 'em still alive.
- No.
To capture the true essence of life in a moment.
And then to preserve it forever.
- Well, you have certainly done that, amigo.
- Thanks.
Maybe, not yet.
Ah. I'm sorry.
I can't help you with this. This is beyond repair.
- Really? Well, that's a bummer.
You have any idea what this thing is?
- It's... definitely a mammal.
Probably bipedal. Maybe from the Procyonidae family.
- Proso...
Yeah.
Tsk. Yep, that's what I was thinking, too, you know?
Well, you know anybody else that might be able to help me then?
- It's Oregon. I'm sure you can throw a stone and hit a taxidermist.
- Ha.
Yeah, right.
Uh, you know, actually, I saw some sign in town for shop creature something--
- Creature Creations. - Yeah, I'm sure.
- Megan Bloom's shop. The shop that's up in the hill.
- Yeah. The shop-- - You know... [stammers] what?
What Megan Bloom does isn't taxidermy.
It--it is-- it is sacrilege.
[wind howling]
- Get down there, Big Reagan, I'm sure it's not that bad.
- To--to be stuffed by Megan Bloom would be a fate worse than death.
I'll tell you what.
Why don't you leave this here...
hmm?
And I'll take a look at it if I get a chance.
[snaps fingers]
- You're a weird one, but I like you.
All right, I'll see you tomorrow.
[door opens, closes]
[engine starts]
[piano music playing]
[squishing sound]
- "Homo Sapien Cognatus."
Sasquatch.
It's smaller than I expected.
[bang on door]
[bang on door again]
[eerie music playing]
[panting]
[man breathing heavily]
