Original subtitles

I hadn't been in Prairie Lea in six months.

Wouldn't be here now but for a routine gold shipment

being transferred by the bank up to Cannon city.

It was due to be picked on the noon stage, but I got into town early.

Figured it would give me a few hours to renew old acquaintances.

Well, howdy Jim. How are you Hogan?

Good to see ya.

JIM: It was real peaceful and quiet in Prairie Lea.

They hadn't had any trouble in four years.

At least not with Wells Fargo shipments.

I oughta know.

I'm a special agent for them. My name's Hardie, Jim Hardie.

Hello, Spoon. Well, look who's here! Jim Hardie.

It's good to see ya.

Ain't you a little bit early? Bank's not open yet.

You're making me feel like I'm not welcome.

Why, I'm tickled pink.

Maybe the company'll buy me a free breakfast, huh?

Believe you got a deal.

By the way, where's Sam Terrence?

He's comin' here on the Goldfield stage.

Well, that's good.

I'm gonna ride shotgun with him over to Cannon City.

Well, that should make things safe enough.

Jim! Lorna! My, it's good to see ya.

It's good to see you, Jim. How's Sam?

Oh, fine. You're having dinner with us tonight.

Oh, I wish I could Lorna but I gotta ride shotgun to Cannon City,

with Sam, as a matter of fact.

Shotgun?

Yes. But there is nothin' to fret about.

Always worrying about her husband.

And that's the way it should be.

You take good care of him, Lorna.

I will.

Now how about that free breakfast?

Well, how about it? Lead the way.

You act like you're thinkin' of using that nothing, kid.

Let's get coffee going.

DANGLER: No fires.

Both of you stay under cover until I get back.

And when'll that be Dangler? I don't know.

When I find out if the gold shipment's gone through on the noon stage.

I thought you knew. Ain't that what he said, Fells?

You can pull out now if you don't like the way I'm running things.

RENTON: I don't like this.

Leave him be, Renton.

I'm sayin' you might get into trouble

riding around alone with that hot temper of yours, Dangler.

Maybe you ought have me with ya.

You sound real touchy, boy.

Being broke do that to ya?

You stay here.

I'm still going into town.

Just to make sure he keeps his mind on business.

Now that was a real nice feed, Jim.

Glad you could come a little early.

Well, you got about an hour. What you gonna do with yourself, Jim?

Oh, I think I'll take a little stroll.

Kinda like this little town.

Why don't you go on over to the office, Spoon?

Wait for me. I'll be there in a little while.

Something wrong Jim?

No.

Jim? No, thank you.

Jim Hardie. Dangler.

Can't say the three years have changed much.

I counted 'em, in Utah State prison.

You are a long way from Utah now.

A man travels where his work takes him.

I know.

Hardie, what happened to Lorna Webster?

You're not gonna do this town any good Joe.

Why don't you move on?

The last time I heard those words, you said them to me

in Bingham City, Utah, three years ago.

You said I was no good for that town either. Or for her!

I have got nothing against you personally.

You paid your debt to society

and as far as I know you're done with the wrong since.

If it's a question of money... I don't care about money.

I wanna know where Lorna Webster is.

DANGLER: No one in Bingham City seems to know what happened to her.

She disappeared.

She would have written to you. You were her friend.

If I knew, I wouldn't tell you.

Tell me.

Don't push your luck, Dangler.

Unless you've forgotten what happened three years ago.

Maybe she is right here in Prairie Lea.

Is that it?

Where is she?

What's going on here? Who are you?

It's nothing.

What are you afraid of Hardie?

We don't like troublemakers around here, mister. Let's go.

No, no!

It's all right. It's a personal matter between the two of us.

Maybe you might need me.

Thank you.

It's my problem.

I'd say it was.

Hey, what happened to Hardie?

I don't know.

Maybe he's been working too hard.

Maybe he needs a little rest.

That ain't what you really think, is it, Sheriff?

No.

Hello there! Whiskey.

Heard you tell you was from Utah.

That's right.

Utah's long ways off.

That makes you quite a pilgrim.

It's not so far when a man is looking for someone.

Oh, yeah? Who you looking for?

You've been here long?

Long enough.

I have an idea that she might be in this town.

Oh! What's her name?

Lorna Webster.

Real pretty.

Kinda blondish hair, tall.

She wouldn't have blue eyes, be about 26 years old?

You've come a long way for nothing, mister.

But maybe she ain't even a woman.

This one is married. Let me worry about that.

Well, her name is Lorna.

Lorna Terret.

You can't let Dangler come in here and...

ruin your life again.

Why did you take his insults today, Jim?

'Cause I didn't want Sheriff Potter putting him in jail.

The longer he's here, the more chance he has of seeing you.

But for me to leave, where would I go? What would Sam think?

There's a stage leaving at midnight for Redlands.

When Sam leaves here at noon today he won't be back till tomorrow night.

You can come back Sunday. By that time Dangler should be gone.

All the hopes we had that Dangler will never find me.

One thing I can thank you for-

getting me a job here at Wells Fargo.

I never would have met Sam.

I don't mean to butt in where I'm not wanted, Lorna.

But I'd just hate to see Dangler open up your past again.

You never did anything wrong, not really.

You made a mistake, but we've all done that.

And I see no reason why you should have to pay for it twice.

How is he? How does he look?

Does it make any difference?

Of course not.

I'm not in love with him anymore, Jim.

I don't have to prove that to you.

Sam and I have had a life together

that I wouldn't change for anything in the world.

Hello, Lorna.

Mrs. Lorna Terret, huh?

You're not wanted here, Dangler.

I've come this far, Hardie. I'm not turning back now.

It's all right, Jim. Let me talk to him.

Please.

We ought to have a drink on this after three years.

No.

Our time ran out long ago, Joe.

Then we'll just love a little harder.

No.

Then I'll drink for the both of us.

Your husband's not gonna be any problem.

No man can get anything without taking it away from another.

That's what you believed when you asked me to marry you.

That we'd start off with money you robbed from a bank.

One mistake I made, one! So you ran out on me.

No, I also grew up.

I wanted a decent, respectable marriage. That's why I ran away.

I had to cut you out of my life.

I don't believe you, Lorna.

All we wanted was the same thing everybody else wanted.

So we'll run for the sun once more. We'll find a place further west. Is that it?

We'll make it this time if they let us alone.

If you didn't know I was in Prairie Lea, what are you doin' here?

One fancy haul, that's all I need.

Then it's the straight and narrow for you and me.

After today I'll buy you pearl-button shoes from St. Louis,

and a red dress with a million yards of lace.

Another robbery? Is that what you're offering me?

You are no good, Joe.

You are no good.

Jim, I have known you too long to make snap judgments.

But you sure made a fool out of yourself

with that hoodlum out there today.

I can tell you that.

Why? Why did you do it?

MAN: Hyah!

I mean acting the fool with that stranger out there.

I got a notion you know him.

I do.

What's he in town for?

Wouldn't have anything to do with that bank shipment

leaving on the noon stage, would it?

I don't know.

But it's worth thinking about.

JIM: Funny, how a man gets careless.

Dangler comin' into town and finding Lorna by accident

seemed to be what I was worrying about.

Not the bank shipment.

Sometimes a man can't see the forest for the trees.

Should have figured, Dangler wasn't just passing through.

Now I had to make sure.

It's all yours, Mr. Hardie.

If you'll just sign the receipt, please?

I'm not the man for this job.

Now, wait a minute!

What about the insurance for the company?

I'm not letting the money out of here, unless everything is in proper order.

Sheriff Potter here can take it through, if you will.

It's only a day's run.

Your deputy can look after things for you while you're gone.

What's happened to you, Jim?

I'll sign the proper authorization that Sheriff Potter is working

on behalf of the company.

If anything happens, if there's a robbery, you'll be fully insured.

Well, let me leave some orders.

I'll be right back.

Anything wrong, Jim?

There's nothing, Sam. I'm gonna stay here.

You see that the money gets on through to Cannon City all right,

then get back here as fast as you can.

Sam?

Sam, you weren't leaving? I'm afraid so darling.

Without seeing me first?

There really wasn't time to stop by, Lorna.

LORNA: Sam, don't go. SAM: Why, what's the matter?

Wha-what's wrong? Nothing. I-I...

I guess I'm acting like a little girl.

All right, Sam, let's get this money rolling.

I gotta go now, honey.

Don't look so unhappy. See you tomorrow night.

Sam...

MAN: Hyah! Hyah!

Joe? Yeah?

I'll go away with you.

I'll go away with you tonight.

There's only thing I'm asking. Yeah?

Don't rob that stage.

That's where you were getting the money, wasn't it?

You mean we'll make it this time?

This time y-you don't have to do anything.

No robberies.

I don't want that kind of money.

You really love him, don't you, Lorna?

You'd do anything to save his life.

If you do what I ask, Joe,

I'll never leave you, never.

Go home and pack.

I'll pick you up tonight.

JIM: I was betting into a hand that I knew was still worth playing.

A man didn't ride towards Crater Canyon for his health.

Where's Dangler?

You don't think I would let you know I was checkin' up on him,

do ya?

The money's comin'.

How'd you get back here without him? I cut around.

All right, the deal's off.

Come again!

The bank changed its mind.

They're not sending the money through.

I guess maybe our luck's run out.

We'll get together some other time. Will we, Dangler?

Who you double-crossin'?

I seen 'em pick up that money. I seen 'em.

Dangler, I was in Prairie Lea.

Don't use it, Renton.

I'm gonna really chop you up.

You shoot that gun, you won't have a chance.

They are not so far away that they can't hear it.

He's right.

What about him?

Let him go. He won't make it a hundred yards. Come on.

How good are you at stopping horses, Fells?

Well, I, uh...

I ain't never had no complaints.

Who was it? Two of my men, back there.

They're taking the stage.

Tell Lorna I-I wasn't planning to come back for her.

But I kept my promise.

Here she comes.

Hyah! Hyah!

Who warned them? Dangler.

Are you all right? Yeah, yeah. Keep going.

Pull 'em up.

SAM: Whoa! Whoa!

Jim, you knew about this all the time.

Yeah. You sure had us fooled.

The other one is dead too.

How come you're out here, Jim? Thought you were staying in town.

I got suspicious of a man in the saloon.

I followed him. When I found him, he was up in the hills, dying.

What man?

He was one of the gang. They'd shot him.

He was the one that told me what they were up to.

What was his name?

He died before he could tell me that.

We'd better get these men on back to town.

We'll take that gold over to Cannon City later on tonight.

No one ever has to know what happened between you and Dangler, Lorna.

For your information,

he didn't try to hold up the stage.

JIM: I could have told her he wasn't comin' back for her.

Maybe its just as well, she didn't know it.

Dangler wasn't a good man.

But he wasn't all black either.

When the chips were down, he came through.

That's what I like to remember, a good in him.

Forget the other things.

And I suppose that that's the way Lorna Terret will remember him also.

MAN: You did a wonderful job, Jim.

Nice job, Jim.
