Drga Elza! Dear Elza! (Hungay 2014)

Translated by: spanixtan

[No sound until 1st dialogue]

[initial dalogue-no background sound]

- Where have you been? [young woman: gentle tone, serene voice]

- Here and there. [man- over 50, severe devils advocate tone]

- I've walked the Earth.

- Have you met him?

There's really nobody like him on this Earth:

Umblemished, honest, devout, righteous...

- Do you think so? [curt, rhetorical question]

[drops diary: short shrill note - thud - silence]

Dear Elza, I started writing this diary the day I decided to kill you.

[guitar strumming:light pop-rock]

"I would like to go far far away... [male singer]

"Never return to this land.

"I would leave my love forever...

"...if my heart wouldn't break.

"I would like to go to Neverland...

" ... and sit dow at the edge of the vast empy space

"I would no longer think about my love...

"...if my heart wouldn't break.

"I would stay in that place...

"...if my heart wouldn't break.

"I wouldn't care if she loved someone else...

"Oh!...if my heart wouldn't break.

[protagonist's voiceover] [Backgroud station sounds]

For many Hungarian soldiers, the last shred of hope

was their faith in going home when the fatherland allowed them.

I would run to you, my love, but I have to wait for my turn

Every second seems like an hour.

But every step I take to the wagon,

takes me closer to you.

- Sergeant! Sir!

This soldier's name is not in the list, sir.

- Let me see it.

There's no mistake here:

The soldier's in the wrong line.

Welcome to Soviet Russia!

- But...Sergeant: there must me a mistake, sir.

I'm on my way home; to Budapest. On leave.

Its written here, you see it? "Temporal leave"

- Thake this: you'll need it.

[thud]

Sergeant... Ive heen here for a year, sir!

I just want to go home!

- Listen, son. Either these papers are wrong...

or someone doesn't want you to go home.

Get out of mi sight before I have you whipped!

Back in line.

Home has never seemed so far away.

I'm disappointed...betrayed...abandoned

Step by step, I go further away from you.

Bullets: one...two...thre...four...five.

I get all the junk the motherland can afford

[long whistle, steam hissing, railroad grunts]

- It's OK.

Listen, son.

The truth is...no one of us should be here.

But it's our duty.

We're here to defend our country. Right here and now.

- Here?

Thousands of miles away?

- Distance means nothing here.

Now we are here...but tomorrrow

We can be fighting in the Carpathians.

And if everyone had your attitude...

- Fighting against whom?

- Dont you even know that?

- Yes, sir, I do...

Against the reds...the Bolsheviks...

...the primitive Asian hordes.

But, sergeant...

those are just empty words, sir

- You are a good man, soldier Lombos...

Or at least...not worse than those others.

But this is not your decision, nor mine

We must fight for our country, families, women.

So that in the end we can finally go home ... and live in peace

- Thank you, sergeant, sir.

- Soldier!

I will look into your case. You have my word.

If what you are saying is true,

you'll be home by Christmas

[Background languid violin music]

- The mail!

Mail call!

[motor roars low]

- The mail' is over here!

- How are you, son.

-Its all you got?

- So... Whats up, Lombos?

- Nothing for me.

- Maybe it fell somewhere!

Just because you haven't received mail from home...

it doesnt mean nobody loves or misses you any longer

That's what we must believe, right? We have to!

Otherwise...Otherwise you lose your mind.

[languid violin music goes on]

[distant talking in Russian]

[woman yells]

[shrieking, laughter, tense music]

[Radio message in German] Bird, Bird! Leave your nest: the wolves are coming!

- Bitch! [Russian]

[cruel wild laughter- yelling]

[door kicked open]

[shot]

- No...not me! Comrade commissar! She's a traitor!

[Radio in German] Bird, Bird! Leave your nest: the wolves are coming!

[shot- radio repeating message]

To your positions! Ready for incoming attack!

Shame on you, soldier! Get out of my sight!

[Radio in German] Bird, Bird! Leave your nest: the wolves are coming!

Everybody take position: ready for incoming attack!

Move! Move!

[Tense music-Commissar repeats order]

[quiet camp sounds and chatter]

-Hey, comrade! -Hi! Look what I've found for you!

This! I need another like this!

- Is this OK? - Yes, that's good!

- Yes, you are right: this is better.

- Hey, what's that?

- This? Nothing important. It's mine.

- Let me see it. Ill trade you some cigarettes for that.

- Ah! Thank you!

- Hey! What are you doing? I need it! Oh, shit!

- Thank you! - Well, it doesn't matter...

Cigarettes?

Bird, Bird! Leave your nest: the wolves are coming!

- Launch the offensive immediately!

[quiet trench sounds]

- Do you what some?

- Hitler's marmalade?

- Lombos! Hell! Where did you get it? - Just eat.

Hmm..!

Hmm...?

[laughing amused]

- Its Ok: thats not why I gave it to you. However....

- So?

- Hmm...?

[sudden explosion]

[tense music]

- Gime me that!

- The binonulars! Damnit!

[Mine explodes]

-Those dirty Russkis!

They send POWs to clear the minefields

- We planted those mines.

- Yes, however...They should rot in hell.

[bullets whistle]

- We have to move on!

[attack: shots, machine gun burst, shouts, yells, chaos]

[music with dramatic and fast tempo: drums]

[Loud explosion - sounds fading]

[long whistle of incoming projectile-explosion]

[accordion plays "Katiusha"]

- Need some help? - Holy shit!

You are Hungarian...

- Can I get that back?

- Of course

Sorry about that.

- The photo too

[distant celebration by fire]

- Is that your wife?

- In a way.

- She's pretty.

- Thanks.

- She is pretty and young...

Im sure she gets a lot of attention.

- So what?

What are you trying to say, old man?

- Nothing.

Well. It wouldnt be the first time...

a lonely woman...

With nobody home... gets in trouble.

- Don't you even think about it!

Anyway, you are not the person I would talk with about it.

- And with who else?

With those guys out there?

- OK, old man. Its not your business. But...my wife is not like that.

- Nobody is like that. At first!.

But loneliness...deprivation...

Feelings fade with time.

Tell me: how long have you been here?

- Over a year.

All other soldiers have been home. One time at least...All but me.

My name is the one that's never in the lists.

They must have messed things up in Budapest.

- That's something strange. It sounds fishy.

Could it be that someone doesn't want you to go home?

-Now you'll say: it's my wife...! She messes with the papers somehow!

- You've said it, not me!

But. Let's say, just as a hypothesis...!

that if she meets a man with some connections...

It wouldn't be so difficult to fix things for you to die here.

Come on, man! Its all right...

You are here...

And you're still alive!

Enough, old fart! You're talking about my wife, not some dirty slut!

Shut up! or I swear Ill throw you out in front of those Russkis!

- I meant no offense.

Im just an old guy that let's his mouth run loose

-How comes you've landed here at the front?

Don't tell me they called you up!

- Forced labour...

- Are you Jewish?

- Partly.

Does it bother you?

- No. Not at all.

Let's keep quiet until they calm down.

- What did you need my diary for?

- The paper is good.

To roll up cigarettes...

To wipe my ass.

- You known what?

Keep it!

Come on! come on! Quick, quick! [Russian voices near] - You got got a gun? - There's one here!

[tense silence - thrilling low music]

- Let's get out of here! -Wait!

After the fires go out... Its easier in the dark.

- Where are you from? -Budapest. I was a teacher.

- I see. You were drafted.

And now you are here, in the middle of nowhere.

Killing people thet never did you any harm.

You know? I can't really understand this situation.

Why did we even come here?

They talk about... the Bolshevik evil!

But...Who are the Bolsheviks?

and whats wrong with them?

They have done nothing to you and me.

But, those fancy bigwhigs

They are the ones who know... Sure!

Theyre having fut at home, while we...

- What are you talking about?

You'd get shot in the head, just for half you've said

- Come on... Don't believe that things have to be this way

Face it. You've served your country long enough

And... What had you got in return?

- A soldier's oath is for life.

Even if youre right. No self-respecting Hungarian would ever betray his country.

No mercy shown or expected: Thats the verdict!

I will not compromise

- And yet...Here you are. Holed up with me. Thinking about surrender

Don't tell me you don't!

I know you better than you think.

You are tired...and fed up with this!

Come on, man! We're just talking!

And, anyway: I'ts not me you're mad at.

[Russians talk nearby-corpses roll quietly down the pit]

[Just faraway talk]

[corpse thud - old man whinces-nearby voices]

- What the hell have you on?

- A German!...

...A corpse.

- You, fool!

- I'm not a red. I run away from labour service

... and found a Russian uniform.

I...I... Put that down

- You have deserted?

Not at all!

I carry water behind the frontline.

- Then, you have deserted.

Is it working out for you?

- I hope so.

- What if they stop and check you? You speak Russian?

- Not much...Just enough to get by.

- Well. My Russian is quite good.

[quiet heaving and panting]

Can you get me one of these?

- I will try.

Stay here. I'll be back soon.

I'm Lajos Ziffer

- Im Mihli Lombos.

- Hurry up...Please

[Russian talk and laugh get closer]

[Laughs amused]- Come here!

I'll bet you've never seen anything like this!

[Laugh mockingly]

- That's a joke?

[laughing without words]

- Please let me... -No way

"Get up and walk!" [voice mocks Christ raising Lazarus]

- Go to hell!

What shall we do with him?

- I don't give a fuck!

- If you did, he'll problably like it!

-Ok. Bring him up.

[Low tense music starts]

[kick opens door] Get up, dirty dogs!

Check if your neighbour's still alive!

Pull aside the corpses you find! Quick!

Come on. [Heaving]

- What'll happen now?

- What do you think? The'll offer us a job.

Reinforcement's arrived. So I think they'll take us to a gulag.

- I don't want to go to a gulag.

Who does? It's the gulag or a bullet in the head

Thank your good luck for not lying right here.

[orchestra: low humming strings]

[more damatic tempo]

- Stop!

Dobchenko! Come here! [Commissar yells order]

Give them water.

pail clatters-water splashes

Move! Move! [distand orders]

[orchestra resumes low humming]

[tempo becomes tense-something is about to happen]

[sudden silence]

- Son of a bitch!

[chaos of sounds: shouts-grunts-blows]

- Stop! [commissar's long shout-shot]

[thumping and groans]

-Take them to the wagon.

Move! Move! Quick!

[door thump- latch clangs- train's short whistle]

[silence in wagon-low music hums]

[Screeching metal - short clang echoes]

[clang-whistle-train speeds and fades]

- Why was that?

- I don't know...Seemed a good idea [coughs- trembling voice]

Give me a reson not to shoot you... bastard!

- I speak Russian...

Big deal! Who doens't speak Russian here? [quiet ironic laughter]

... What now?

- I also speak German... [German]

- That...is not enough! [German]

- I speak Italian... [Italian]

- That's good. [Italian]

Then, you'll clear Italian mines.

Take the Professor to the mine tamplers' squad

[moving in silence]

- Comrade Commissar. How are you feeling? -Ill live.

Let me take a look at your wound

-Have today's reports come yet? -Yes, they are here.

- Lets see them!

[soft piano notes break the silence]

- Lena!

Excuse me: I thought you were someone else.

- Who is that? - No idea.

No! First, a medical examination.

- dismissed!

-Proceed. Let's get it over with

[soft piano notes break the silence]

- Tlik. What are you thinking?

- Nothing important.

- We shoudn't neglect it like this.

[piano notes fade]

[rapping on metal pot]

Just what I needed. [mutters bitter irony]

- It was only your fault, moron.

If you had kept quiet, now you would be on that train.

- Yeah, headed for Siberia

I want to get home

- Bon voyage!

Is that the routine here? [background: beaten prisoner groans]

- Are you kidding, man?

Here, only the strongest can survive

[beating and groaning go on]

Adapt and keep a low profile! [whispering]

Whatever happens, keep out of trouble.

And maybe they don't let you starve to death.

- You are going to help me

- Why should I?

- Because I ask you to.

And because you have no choice.

- Would you rat on me, buddy?

- Without any doubt at all.

You can't hide, anyway.

I cand find you wherever you go

"The different between reality and the hallucinations of a man who has lost all hope...

...is only revealed in hindsight" [actor's voice quoting dramatically]

That is the difference: his thoughts"

Surrounded by all this noise, I try to find solace in the shadow of silence.

Watching myself go insane step by step

This is how I joined the mine tramplers [Orchestra: languid music]

The tramplers are a bunch of lunatics; petty criminals;...

dissidents; plolitical pariahs, POWs, collaborationists....

That is: scum gathered all over the whole Soviet Union

I don't care for most of them...

but there are some worthy individuals:

Kolia, for example. A circus clown in the civilian life.

His only fault: parodying Stalins speeches

They didn't even wait for him to get off the stage

Luckily, he din't lose his sense of humour:

He made us laugh so many times...

[imitates a duck]

[mine explodes echoing in the woods]

His last performance didnt make anyone laugh

[orchestra: low languid music- stringed instruments]

This is Scraggy Schov. A devout communist...

He used to give speeches to the crowds

calling for a inflexible resistance to the enemy.

[indistinct harangue-crowd cheers and roars-music still on]

Then, he was called up. [loud splash]

But he couldn't stomach the horrors of the battlefield

[same languid music goes on - other sounds barely audible]

[walking in silence-no music]

[gulping sounds]

Some say that a supernatural power protects him

But the truth is that he weighs too little...

A bad thing for those wo walk behind him

[sudden explosion breaks silence]

[loud mine explosion-silence]

The longest surviving trampler is, without doubt, Uncle Krgen

He has avoided skillfuly the mines for almost a year.

Easy for him: he had planted most of them himself

[mines explode in background]

The guards literally fight for walking behind him

If you don't watch your step, you can lose it any minute

It's also a good opportunity for settling disputes

[explosion]

And this is me. Still alive.

The other prisoners accepted me quickly:

In general: Russians don't hate Hungarians...

Most of them never met anybody from my country

The exception: Dobchenko and Jrkov

Right from the start, theyd paid special attention to make my life even more miserable

- stop!

Their childish games had already claimed many tramplers' lives

Their bets didn't have any real stakes:

They used foreign currencies in the game...

completely useless to them.

This is the value of human life here:

a few coloured pieces of paper.

- This is my turn - Go ahead

[mine explodes loudly] - Hell!

[silence- distant laugh, short comments]

- move on, move on...

[quiet laugh] - bitch.

[distant comments and laugh - tense music]

[dull thump of earth clod on fabric ]

[dull thump and distant laughter]

Jrkov and Dodchenko are not really bad people

They treat the enemies of the system just like their country expects them to

Deep down, I understand it.

For them, Im just one of the thousands of enemy soldiers that came to trample around the fields of their homeland

[orchestra: audible again - low sad tempo ]

Our guards don't have things much easier:

They push us, and the NKVDs (political police) push them.

All we know is the only way is forward, regardless of what obstacles lie ahead

[Orchestra: louder and dramatic desolate music] [stringed instruments low lament]

[silence in barn]

- May I have some? - No!

The bottle... is empty. [slurring his words]

Even if it wasn't , I wouldn't give you any.

You. Where did you get that?

- I got it...found it... What's the difference?

- You're a lucky gypsy.

- You are the lucky one!

- Do I look like that? [coughs]

- You don't trigger the mines

Wherever you walk, you dont die

- You know which ones die? Those who are afraid.

Im not afraid...So I dont die.

Because Im already dead. Look!

See it? It's the scar of a pistol bullet

It came in at a flat angle...and bounced off

Maybe I'm really lucky

When we are not trampling, we are marching.

And when we are not marching,

we are digging...

either trenches...or graves

[low gloomy music- working in silence]

- Dig, you bitch!

[Uncle Kurgen] -Did you know, son...

...That the tramplers get the most vodka in the Soviet army?

I undestand it; it would ne more difficult to send us sober along the minefields

Scraggy Schov... He drank himself to death

After all, the lucky one was not immortal.

[Uncle Krgen] - We can walk around them...

If you pay attention, you can see where they are.

Dig! [whispers]

They are always watching us!

Be careful!

So...When snow falls and covers the earth,

the ice began to form first over them... Right?

In the summer, the grass grows scarce over them.

If you only tread on thick, healthy patches of grass; nothing can happen to you

Sovient soldiers can easily join the tramplers for the smallest mistake

This is a world full with suspicion:

They watch us... and we watch them.

And the NKVDs... like to watch everybody.

Especially each other.

[orchestra: low, gloomy, dull music]

[village background sounds - indistinct talk, greetings]

- What are you still doing here?

You should have disappeared by now.

I remember this place:

if you follow the tracks, you can get home

- They are having a big party tonight.

It could be useful to you.

- They leave the villagers alone: there're many old people here

- ...And wounded ones.

- There's where they'll keep us tonight. - Move on!

[Accordion plays - Men and woman celebrate]

[man begins to sing folk tune by fire]

Look! My dear Znika! [laughs friendly]

Come on... have drink with us!

To Stalin!

- What's going on here? [angry order]

Most of them are drunk...

Don't you have anything better to do...

... than harassing the comrade?

Get out of my sight!

- It was none of your business, Tlik!

Why don't you like that anyone notices the woman behind the uniform!

- Znika!

[soft romantic piano notes]

Why are you so afraid of your feelings?

[back to distant accordion by crackling fire]

[snoring softly]

Dear Elza,

I started writing this diary the day I decided to kill you.

[low eerie sound: wind, jingles]

- Why do you want to kill me, Mihli? [Elzas voice echoes softly]

Why would this be better without me?

- You no longer give me strength

I can only count on myself

- This terrible pain and yelling...

...are not the end, but a new beginning!

- You are weak!... Face it! [Mihlis defying voice]

All that happens now... is beyond you. [Mihli]

- If you lose me...that could be your end. [Elza]

Think about it. What are you going to do? [Elza]

I just wanted to remind you:

You should have faith.

[wakes up-silence- distant accordion music]

[laughing by fire-Znika and drunk soldiers]

- Old man!

Hey, old man!

- What do you want? [whispering]

- I'm geeting out of here! -Youre on your own!

- Come on! I even have a rope! - So what?

- Everybody is drunk! -Everybody?

- Or alseep!

You wont have to do anything: I'll throw it. Just make sure it catches on something!

- On what?

- Your mother's neck!

- Very funny!. Ok, get on with it!

[snoring gently]

[ouside: quiet, party by distant fire]

- Ironic. [slurring words]

If it wasn't for the war...

I would've ... asked her ... to marry me

[accordion, laughing foolishly - no words]

[rope makes wood creak]

But...if it wasn't ... for the war... [mumbles words]

I woulnd't... even...have met her

Damnit.

That's not fair.

[bench crash-Mihli falls with a bump and groans]

[quiet morning sounds]

[soldiers spit on him]

[heaving- bike clatters near him]

- You left me stranded again.

- Don't blame me...

Your destiny is now on your own hands

Perhaps that wasn't the right time

But maybe it is now...Look!

Lena! my dear Lena!

- What are you doing?

What are you doing?

What? What happens?

What are you doing?

This is just a keepsake.

Give that to me.

[orchestra: low tense music]

[door opens and shuts with a bang]

- Let's do it quickly!

[paper creaks on writing machine]

At last you can make yourself useful.

Antonio, where are your units positioned?

Dove sono le posizione della tua unit? [ interpreting to Italian]

He doesn't answer

-I dont know what to do with you. Ask him again!

Antonio, where are your units positioned? [Italian]

[slap and groan]

He said "Oh, no!"

- By chance... I also understood it.

Tell him it's the last time we ask!

- Antonio; dont be a fool. You have say something, or else...

They will beat the hell out of you.

[hard fist thumping-groans]

- Enough!

If he doensn't say anything, he's dead.

I'll tell you nothing...

I wont betray my fatherland. [Italian]

- Spare me that patriotic bullshit!

Talk or these are going to beat you to a pulp!

Go fuck yourself! [slap-groan]

[cross drops from wall]

- Across the river...the Germans have left some small... rearguard units.

[interpreting into Russian]

- Then, it was worth the thrashing.

Show them on the map!

-Show them to me on the map.

- Two German units...

We, the Italians...

And Hungarians.

- He said: two German units here

The Italians, over here...

That's all he knows.

- Take him out.

[typewriter in silent office]

[Typing sounds go on]

- Everything ready?

- Yes.

[embarrasing silence]

[Soft romantic piano notes]

[sighs, heavy breathing, piano... ]

- Fire! [German]

- Go ahead ,soldiers!

Don't let fear take hold of your hearts!

We are not backing down!

[machine guns, water splashing, bullets whistle, explosions, shouts]

Our motherland; the glorious Soviet Union, needs you!

- No!

[battle echoes underwater]

[splashing sounds by shore]

- Look, comrades, what a nice surprise! [Russian]

- Don't move! [German]

- No, Im with you; I'm Italian! [Italian]

Dont Shoot!

No, no...Im with you!, Im Italian! [Italian]

- You are lying, traitor! On your knees! [German]

Filthy pig! Son of a bitch!

- Heil Hitler! Avanti Benito Mussolini!

- How dare you pronounce the name of the Fhrer ?

Dirty Jew!

Hans!

- No, I'm Italian...[Italian]

Dear friends! I'm Italian! We are comrades!

Don't shoot!

- Guilty conscience?

Time to decice whose side you are on.

Go ahead! What are you waiting for?

- We're comrades...! [shot]

[retches]

- What sort of mix would these Russians eat?

[background laughing- tense music]

[wrestling, roar, shots]

- You are going to die, bitch! [German]

[shot]

- Lena!

Lena!

[soothing piano music]

Znika; the doctor whose sister I had saved; said some words on my behalf to the political officer

I felt the effects immediately.

As a reward for my heroic act, I had to see what is it like to be a pusher.

It's not much easier.

It's the relationships between pushers and tramplers that really reflects...

...the cynical attitude of the regime regarding the lives of its soldiers.

The truth is that the primary goal of the pushers is not guiding the poor bastards onto the minefields...

...but protect them from enemy snipers.

According this sick logic of power...

the death of a trampler is only useful...

... if it also takes a mine with him.

[orchestra: low dismal music vibrating ]

[no words-just music drags on]

- Have you seen the new VT-16 yet? - No, I haven't

- They say it's worth a look.

- Whats that?

Weve only encountered isolated resistance in the village.

- What about the factory?

- Nobdy has been to the factory.

- Then, we'll clear the factory first.

- Understood, sir!

- Fan out!

Let's go in!

[fires crackle- quiet background]

[lively drum music- action]

[low tense music: vibrating notes]

[lively drums tempo]

[violins: shrill note increases-warning]

[silence]

- Move on!

[quiet steps rattle on rubble]

[low tense music]

[shrill notes incresasing]

-No! [shot]

Quick! quick!

[lively drumming sound]

-What happened? -A Sniper

- Let's go!

[shots]

[moving quietly]

- Bring the Hungarian!

- Come on! walk ahead!

[low eerie vibrating sounds]

- Wait a moment!

[Sudden shot]

- No!

He must have warned them!

-Where do you think you're going?

- I can still save her!

Let go of me! -No, you can't! Look!

[shot]

- I can save her!

- No, it makes no sense! -No!

I can save her!

- You'll also get shot! - No!

I can help her!

- Its too late! You can't help her!

- You don't understand! She's my sister!

- Youll get shot!

- Let go of me!

[machine gun burst]

- Comrade Komelkov! This is an order!

[sniper's body falls - silence]

- The sniper is dead! Hold your fire!

- Lena!

Lena...!

Im here...Don't worry....

No!

No! [crying]

Don't go! [crying]

You warned them, bastard!

[soft melancholic piano notes]

As I stood there, watching life escape from that girl's body I felt shame [Mihli's voiceover]

I was ashame because I empathized with these people.

Even though I'm supposed to hate them... because they're the enemy and all that.

Now, it's sure they look at me like an enemy.

The trust is gone, like it had never existed.

At this point, I knew there wasnt a place for me here anymore.

It's over for you, bitch!

My days are counted: nothing protects me from the guards now.

- What do you want?

- Look! That's the Carpathian range!

- And that, over there, is a minefield.

- The time has come!

Now you can settle the score, with everybody.

- Everything that happened was your fault.

I should have never listened to you.

I have only myself to blame for you.

What the hell is wrong with you, private Lombos?

What happened, soldier?

-Have you figured out how to...- Shut up!

There's nothing you can teach me anymore.

It's time for you to get out of here.

- Why do you talk to me like that?

I've always wanted only the best for you.

- Look, son... - You are nobody to me!

Do I really have to explain this you?

I can see through you, old man.

- You're a weak sucker!

You are not going to do anything

You never had, and never will.

Your primitive brain can't even conceive that...

Shut your damned mouth, son of a bitch!

You don't know shit about me!

Loyalty, honor. They mean nothing to you!

You think I wouln't do anything?

Watch me!

Sorry, old man; but I have to get home.

Without you.

[orchestra: mourning desolate battlefield]

- Comrade Varvalin.

- I can't hear anything:

there must be something wrong with my ears.

- I don't understand.

- I can't hear the damned mines explode.

- You are right, sir.

- Comrades! Its time to redeem all your faults!

Do not fear to make your last sacrifice defending our homeland!

[gloomy drums announce doom]

[eerie high-pitched sounds]

The glorious comrade Stalin demands one last effort from you!

Those who survive this day will be released from the penal battalion!

and may return to their regular units!

Comrades! Its time to redeem all your faults!

Do not fear to make your last sacrifice defending our homeland!

[loud shot- bullet whistles by]

- Sniper!

[machine gun, sniper shots, soldiers yell and roar]

- Aim at that treeline!

Hurra! [Russian expression of encouragement]

[mine explodes]

[orchestra joins chaos: screeching violin sounds]

[Dobchenko roars]

[orchestra: dramatic crescendo]

Hurr! Hurr! [Wave of Russian soldiers advance yelling]

[orchestra's dramatic symphony prevails- frenetic tempo]

- Son of a bitch!

[thump on head] - [noise subsides]

- Hi there!

[muffled tense humming sound]

- What the hell where you thinking, man? [old man's voiceover echoes]

You thought you could do it all by yourself?...

...And would get finally home?

- I dont need you. [Mihli's voiceover]

....I never did.

Give me back the diary.

- You have it.

You have always had it

[low tense humming- muffled sounds echo]

- You win.

- Trust me.

- Trust me.

[Commissar groans]

[eerie humming continues]

[shot echoes]

Private Lombos! [old man's voiceocer]

You are home after all.... You are at home.

But... is home really there?

Mihli... [Elza: calm, detached voice]

- So, you've come back to make the right decision. [Elza] -He has already decided! [old man]

He's coming with me, because he has commited the ultimate sin.

-I'm standing here, with my head held high.

My only motivation was the faith in coming back home.

- Can you even year what you're saying, man?

Instinct and faith: an eternal paradox.

But you see that it's forcing you to make one final decision

-I have already made my decision.

I've been playing you from the start.

Reason is above both faith and instinct.

Then, I had to fight against my instincts

to finally get here.

- Reason? [laughs mockingly]

I really like you, man!

You want to gain the upper hand over me... by using the wisdom I imparted on you!

- Then, let it be. [Elza]

[crows caw over field]

- Here! Come here comrades! [Russian soldier]

- This one is still alive.

- A medic! quick! We need a medic here!

- The wounds aren't serious, just superficial.

A lucky man. He'll be up on his feet in a few days.

- Who is this man? Does he have any military or Party papers on him? Where are his documents?

-Nothing, comrade captain. The scavengers probably took all his stuff thinking he was dead.

- Never mind: we'll figure it out later. Take him to the rearguard and let the doctors check him.
