"CHASUKE'S JOURNEY"
My name's Chasuke. Head tea server.
All I do is pour tea and serve it.
They're screenwriters. All chosen by The Man
to write the lives of the people on earth below.
Their lives play out
following the scenarios thought up by these writers.
Chasuke, don't you think this story's too plain-Jane?
So, you wanna get hitched?
Whoa. Are you kiddin'?
For real. Really.
What kinda plot is that?
Too ordinary, right?
Right?
Definitely.
"Definitely"?
Well, it's ordinary but it's also deep... modern...
Seriously?
For real.
It's The Man.
It's the creator of all things. The almighty, absolute.
The one with supreme command over every word being written.
The Man would transform into wind
impart some kind of sweeping message and then leave.
Avant-garrrde!
Avant-garrrde!
"Avant-garde"?
Something exotic?
Like a new virus?
I'm writing about that.
It means coming up with new ideas.
A bald nurse?
And paint their faces white.
But my character is a cop...
Make him a white-faced cop!
I knew it. Too ordinary.
Yep.
Hey, help me come up with something. Got any good ideas?
It's not that easy.
Anything! Just a hint. I'll take it from there.
Well... try changing the setting.
To what, for example?
Maybe a karaoke joint instead of a bar.
That's avant-garde?
I have no idea.
OK, OK.
I'll set it in a karaoke joint and try to dream something up.
My characters were gonna use that place!
Then move 'em to a convenience store!
I can't stage a meet-up party in a convenience store!
It sounds more avant-garde!
People's lives are interdependent on others.
If you make a change in one person's story, it affects everyone else's.
All of our stories are linked.
How's this, Chasuke?
"Will you please..."
"Marry me? For real!"
"As if..."
Move it! Outta my way!
Bugger off!
Avant-garde, right?
Don't ask me.
That's Kansuke.
His lead character is a young girl named Yuri, who works at a flower shop.
Her parents separated at her young age.
From that day on, she never spoke a word.
Kansuke tried over and over to make her talk.
But she never spoke.
I like Yuri.
She's not like other people.
She expresses with her face and gestures.
It's kinda funny and cute.
When her dark eyes start fluttering, it gets my heart racin'.
Getting anywhere?
Can't you do something?
It's too late.
It was all my fault.
If I hadn't suggested karaoke...
Chasuke.
Only you can save her.
You go down to earth and save her.
Earth!? I'm just a tea server.
Exactly my point!
You don't exist on earth.
You're not affected by a scenario.
The one who isn't affected can change the scenario of others.
But...
It's the only way we can save her.
I'll back you up in my script.
Amesuke and Kasuke will lend a hand.
We'll send you signals through people and things.
- Signals? - Right. Stay alert.
Yuri dies at 8:50 p.m.
You better move.
But...
Don't you want to meet Yuri?
Hurry.
Could I really save Yuri?
The Man sees everything.
He might already know of this.
The Man's invincibility terrifies me.
Gives me the shivers.
Me...
Me... on earth... How?
I want...
to meet...
Yuri!
Are you alright?
You were stirred up.
We dance Kachashi as if to stir the heavens.
Kachashi means to stew.
Your clothes are worn out.
I've got a bunch of used clothes at the shop.
This guy is Junichi Taneda.
The lead character in Amesuke's script.
Try this on.
Taneda appeared in front of me as my back up.
But can I rely on him?
Taneda is sixty years old and single.
After giving up his lifelong dream of becoming an actor at fifty
he tried out for all kinds of jobs, but none of them stuck...
And he began living on the streets.
While he was sleeping, a record-breaking storm hit.
And was rescued back to his folks.
"TANEDA ANTIQUE SHOP"
His parents couldn't bare to watch him.
They gave him his start-up capital and his father's antique collections.
He opened a shop along the run-down shopping arcade.
Taneda spent all day surrounded by old antiques.
Could a lazy bum like him do anything to help me out?
It really suits you.
Thanks a lot...
It's already taken.
It was the teacup Yuri put on hold.
She's a regular at the shop
and drops in once a week.
If I don't change things, Yuri won't be able to purchase this teacup.
I'm hungry. How about some ramen?
Ramen?
Yuri is supposed to die at 8:50 p.m. Still enough time...
Now I can only rely on Taneda.
Shall I follow "attender" Taneda?
I'll attend to you.
I'll attend to you.
Isn't the ramen here great?
It's outta this world.
Is this a friend of yours?
I just met him today.
There's something about him.
Oh, like in that way?
No, not like that.
I hope not.
Good to meet ya.
I know who this guy is.
His name is Joe Hikomura.
He's the lead character in Kasuke's screenplay.
Joe's had a pretty amazing life.
He was born to homeless parents.
His mom was a sex symbol among the homeless.
She hooked up with lots of them,
so nobody knew who the actual father was.
Not long after Joe was born, his mom died.
So he was raised by ten homeless fathers.
Joe's playground was the market.
Every day, he'd dribble a soccer ball past the shoppers.
One day
a well-known soccer coach spotted Joe's talent.
Joe's superior agility and eye-foot coordination
left other kids his age in the dust.
He was a prodigy.
Word spread about his playing and the mass media came flocking.
It wasn't long before the secret
about his homeless background got out and laid off the team.
Through his rage, Joe discovered boxing.
His natural flair for boxing got him noticed.
The "Homeless boxer" caused a stir
and the media had a field day.
Joe lost his cool and punched out a reporter
which ended his career.
Joe grew wilder and wilder, got into crime
and did a stint in reform school.
His ten dads were shocked at this and tried to set him straight.
Most of them were former company presidents.
They failed their business and ended up on the streets.
Joe received his education from his dads
and was accepted by a university.
Joe got a girlfriend.
She was a famous actress, named Miu Asakura.
Joe and Miu fell in love.
One day, Joe accompanied Miu to one of her shoots.
During the voyage, the ship rammed into a huge iceberg
and Joe was thrown into the sea...
He was rescued by a patrol boat
but Miu was shooting below deck and went down with the ship.
Joe tried to take his own life but couldn't go through with it.
All that was left of Miu
were the countless porcelain bowls they shaped.
Joe vowed to keep Miu's memory alive
and opened a ramen shop using all the bowls.
One day, after visiting Taneda's shop, Yuri stopped by here.
With her love of ceramics, she wrote a request to buy them.
But Joe refused.
No, you can't.
From that day on, Yuri became a regular.
Now she's about to lose her life
all because of a senseless line in her script.
Speaking of Joe
all because of a no-talent writer who rips off movies
and jumps on trendy bandwagons, Joe have to feel this misery.
I will never let it happen.
Thanks!
Bye.
Now what? How do I save Yuri?
Meet Yuri and stop her from going...
Or stop Yasuo from driving the cab...
What should I do?
What?
Yo!
Did you close the shop early?
Yeah... Somehow I just ain't up to working.
Backup. It's backup!
Kasuke sent him here.
I've got three coupons for karaoke. Wanna go?
Coupons for that karaoke joint.
They must want me to stop Yasuo.
I get it! Joe used to be a boxer.
With his agility and quick reflexes, Yasuo will be a pushover.
Let's do this. Karaoke!
OK, let's go.
Hey, what's your name?
I didn't catch it either.
Um... Chas...
Chas?
That's a funny name.
I'm Joe Hikomura.
I'm Taneda.
I'm Chas. Good to meet you.
Let's go, Chas!
Screw this. Next time.
No, let's wait.
You like karaoke that much?
Well... Yeah...
It's time!
Not long now! Yasuo's upset girlfriend will come out.
Ain't you that homeless boxer?
It is you!
I know this guy too.
Mitsuo Shigeta.
He's the son of a city councilor.
He was on Joe's soccer team as a kid.
Mitsuo was the star player until Joe showed up and stole all the limelight.
Mitsuo threw a tantrum and begged his father for help.
His father had his men dig up some dirt.
They found out Joe's secret and sold the story to the tabloids.
You don't know?
He was homeless. His mom and dad were bums, too.
His mom banged all the other bums.
That's why he has dozens of dads.
That's messed up!
Screw you!
Let go of me!
They know!
The other screenwriters know I'm here!
I know Yuri's route home.
I can make it in three minutes!
"SAMARITAN HOSPITAL"
God is living inside each and every one of us.
You were put on this earth to become God.
He is not outside.
He is living within us. In our hearts.
Enlightenment is achieved once we fully open...
Hey you!
Look at that shit-head!
I told him to stop doing dope.
Chas, stop...
It's enough.
Yo! Who let you in?
So you're the one
who's been beatin' on our boy?
Look at the state the poor kid's in.
He's useless to me like this.
Hey, it's broken.
Shut up, bitch!
I think you owe us a little something.
Stab him.
Argh... No...
Your legs. What happened?
Injured?
Always like this.
Always?
Since I was born.
Writing another terrible script like this...
Yu.
Oh, thank you!
Thank you! You're an angel.
An angel!
Hey, you OK? I'll take you back to my shop.
How are you feeling?
Lots of odds and ends here.
Nowadays people just throw things out
even when they're usable.
I guess I was tossed out like all this other junk.
And Taneda took me in.
What?
Thousands of views!
The video I uploaded to YouTube.
I shot the storefront to create a website.
It was right then when you helped that boy, then I filmed you.
You filmed me? Why'd you upload it?
But, it was incredible!
Did you do some kind of osteopathy?
Or is it psychic ability?
I'm hungry. I'm gonna grab something at the store.
Just wait here.
Mr. Angel.
Mr. Angel, please help my child!
How'd they know?
I tweeted it.
I tweeted "The Angel's at my shop".
How about I tweet that
you're not here?
I never should've done what I did.
But I couldn't forgive them taking away that little boy's legs...
OK, let's do this! I'll fight back!
I'll use my power
to undo those assholes' screenplays
right down to the punctuation!
I was left for dead down here, so I'll let loose however I want!
Let's get started.
We'll now start the examinations. Person #1, please.
Miwa Shindo, thirteen years old. Visually impaired.
She's blind.
Why would they do such a thing?
I'm gonna cure it.
Please let my daughter see...
I understand. Let me try.
Miwa!
I'll save all these people living through horrible screenplays.
Just watch me, you hacks!
Next!
Next person.
It works. It works.
Thank you so much.
Mr. Angel, thank you.
Thank you very much.
I'm glad.
Are you alright?
When... I use the power... headache...
headache... and feel nauseous...
I was moved watching you.
The sacrifice you make for others is incredible.
I'll follow you, no matter what happens.
Chas, you're a savior.
Should I get some medicine? Just wait here.
Indigestion pills, perhaps.
Are you OK? Should I get you some medicine, too?
Chas.
Sorry, but there's someone I need you to see.
She's been out for a long time.
Yuri...
She's alive.
Chas.
Can't you do something with your power?
I'll cure her. I'll do it.
You've been out for a long time, since the accident.
He brought you back.
Let me introduce you.
He's Chas. Savior...
Don't worry about it.
It was no big deal.
I puked. Barfed right in front of her. It was a disaster.
It happened because you helped her. You puked for her benefit.
Yeah. It wasn't just any puke.
"Pure puke", or "beautiful barf".
Not barf. More like... ba... balm. A type of balm.
Good for beautiful skin.
OK, then have some on your face.
I'm just throwing up "balm".
Yuri's a nice person. She'll understand.
Understand what? She put on the oxygen mask!
What exactly is so funny?
It's just... When she put on the mask
it was hilarious.
We'll call your number. Please wait for a while.
We'll call your number when ready.
There's a TV crew here! We're gonna be on TV!
The media? Oh, no...
Why, what's it to you?
Well, it's...
What do you mean TV?
Please let me help out.
Um... well... sure, why not?
- Thank you. - Thank you.
Good for you.
Thank you.
Take care.
Great job.
We have to go pick up few things.
Just take easy, Mr. Angel.
It's a little... dark in here.
Light. Let's get some lights on.
Excuse us.
I don't wanna be here.
Let's get it over quickly.
Easy for you to say. Why don't you come on with me?
Why me? I've always hated the media.
Then let's go home.
Tell Taneda. He set it up.
Thank you for coming in.
Let me introduce the show's host. Charlie Pon!
I knew his face.
Charlie Pon, real name Shin Tobita.
He is the lead character in the screenplay Heisuke is writing.
Pon's dad disappeared and his mom was a pickpocket.
Pon and his mom drifted from place to place.
Pon's mom liked movies.
She wore a trench coat just like the one in "Gloria".
Pon loved his mom a lot.
His mom often used the movie theaters to find targets.
Pon was excited to see films.
He loved the movies. Especially of Chaplin's.
Which comically mocked power and authority.
He was mesmerized by Chaplin.
On that day, "City Lights" was shown at the theater.
As it reached the climax, a man started shouting.
Pon's mom had fumbled.
With his mom dead, Pon was sent to an orphanage.
He sneaked out often
and walked in the market looking for mom's trace.
One day, he met an old man.
He was a legendary pickpocket known as Mr. Den.
Mr. Den showed Pon all kinds of magic tricks.
Pon was drawn to magic. He wanted a job
where he could make people happy.
Pon tried out for a TV show using tricks he'd learned.
He always shouted "One, two three, Pon!" before his tricks.
His "Pon" was childish but caught on with kids.
They started saying things like
"Pon you very much!" or "I got Ponned". It became all the rage.
Watch out!
Pon movies!
Pon TV dramas!
Pon commercials!
Pon after Pon, the work never stopped.
He made his way to stardom.
Was it really by chance that
Pon was standing in front of me?
Nah, it had to be in the script.
Please come in.
This is Maiko, the presenter...
Please.
Welcome to our live special, "No Poning Way!"
I'm your host, Charlie Pon.
Nice to meet you Pon!
Today something incredible is expected Pon!
The man that everyone is talking about is here.
Without further ado, let's give him a big Pon welcome!
All together now.
Here we go...
Mr. Angel!
Welcome, Mr. Angel.
By the way, where are you from?
Um...
Up there?
I'll spill the beans. I'll spill' em all.
You hear me Chasuke?
What's going on?
What's the connection?
The police officer called you "Chas".
I think he was just saying hello. Like "Cheers".
He says hello and then tries to shoot you?
Gimme a break!
We checked out your background.
Shit... I don't have a background. I don't exist in this world.
Mr. "Saotome". Doesn't suit you.
What!? "Saotome"?
Chasuke Saotome. Thirty years old.
Born in Tosa.
Tosa? In Shikoku?
Father's occupation, fisherman.
Bullshit. The screenplay is pure bullshit.
"Chasuke" and the noble surname "Saotome".
Sounds like a master and slave all in one.
According to the detective, I was born in Tosa
as the oldest son in a family of fishermen.
My classmates called me "Chas"
and I became the most popular student at school.
In junior high, I became the leader of a biker gang
and ran wild every day.
In high school, I got into rock music and started a band.
But we went in different directions and split up.
After graduating, I went to Tokyo
and earned money working as a waiter in a café.
The manager recommended me to enter a national waiter tournament
and won the "Waiter of the Year" award.
But a waiter is just a waiter after all.
There was nowhere higher to go
so my passion faded out.
As luck would have it, when my building caught fire.
I was suspected and took off.
I hid out in a container and set sail for Okinawa.
There I ran into a man that helped me out.
Kenzo Sawamura, boss of the Sawamura clan in the Ryuseikai crime syndicate.
And so, I was initiated into the yakuza.
I got tattoos and served tea to the crew.
The guys liked me so I moved up the ranks.
One day, the Sawamura clan got caught up in a turf war.
l jumped in the line of fire.
And just like that I vanished. Gone.
Then end up here.
What kind of screenplay?
Me, a yakuza?
Get the hell outta here!
Yakuza scum on TV? What are you up to?
I ain't know nothin' 'bout that!
Don't play innocent!
The detective kept grilling me but I kept my mouth shut.
Two hours later they finally let me go.
Shit.
I guess
I died after all.
And I got the tea-serving job in heaven.
A waiter becomes a tea server. What a joke.
Maybe some screenwriter is doing a half-assed job to protect me.
The problem is Yasuo and the white-faced cop.
The cop was gunning for Yuri, not me.
They came to the studio.
They knew I'd be on the show.
Someone sent them there. Just like in a screenplay.
Dammit! They're after Yuri right now!
Are you OK?
I'm so glad!
I was a yakuza, living on the fringes.
I beat, kicked
and nearly killed people without batting an eyelid.
Hotel "Le Man"
Face is a big deal when you're in the yakuza.
You know?
If I leave things as they are, I'll be a laughingstock.
Brother!
Ginji, Seiji, Ryo
Tetta, Yasu, Kenji.
Long time no see.
What's up, homies?
Lemme ask you that. Goin' on a raid without even tellin' us.
This is my fight. Back off.
Can't do that, brother.
After you took a bullet for the boss, we got ambushed.
What!? How is he?
Don't be tellin' me...
Just a scratch.
Yer a demon!
Next time you come at me you'll pay. Full price.
I'll let it go this time. Now scam!
Well
I'm outta here.
I missed my chance...
Master!
Let me be your disciple!
What you did moved me.
It hit me right here. Seriously.
I want to learn your craft.
It ain't a "craft".
I owe you my heart.
I ain't gay.
Master!
I owe you my life!
I haven't seen that technique before.
It ain't technique. It's puke.
Oh, look out. Master!
Are you OK?
Taneda.
You wanted to be an actor, right?
But after you turned fifty you gave up.
Then you hopped from job to job, became homeless
and got rescued during a storm.
Then your dad helped you open this shop.
Joe, you grew up with ten dads.
You were great at playing soccer and got scouted by a local team.
You were called a prodigy.
The media found out about your secret, and you quit soccer.
You got into fights and then started boxing.
You got into trouble again and were kicked out of the boxing world.
Your life was a mess and you drifted into crime.
But your ten dads helped you straighten up.
Then you met a girl.
You were so happy.
But tragedy struck and she died.
You opened a shop using the bowls you made together.
Pon.
When you were a kid, your mom always took you to the movies.
She liked her trench coat and always wore it.
You loved the movies.
Especially Charlie Chaplin.
One day
something terrible happened and you were left all alone.
You were sent to an orphanage.
You met Mr. Den, and he put you on the path to the entertainment world.
I came from the heavens to save Yuri's life.
Up in heaven, there are screenwriters who write every person's story.
When I was up there, I read your scripts
and knew the danger she was in.
So? Is she safe now?
Yes.
That's good, Yuri!
So the words I'm saying are being written by a screenwriter?
We're living our lives following their storylines?
For the most part, yeah.
But people with a really strong will can change their own stories.
In that case, the writers
put their lead characters on a better path by sending them a signal.
Whether you notice those signals or not is the key.
It's important not to be pessimistic, no matter what happens,
and to believe in a better future.
Master, does everyone up there have tattoos?
The first time I met you, you changed clothes here
but I didn't see any tattoos.
That's right.
But why?
Because I died once.
I was a yakuza in my previous life.
When those memories came back, so did the tattoos.
What is your real name?
My name?
Chasuke Saotome.
- Ashtray? - Huh? Chastity?
"Chasuke". Chasuke Saotome.
It's a weird name. My first and last name don't go together.
No, it's a fine name.
Chasuke Saotome... Yeah. It's kind of fun to say.
Like high class and low class all in one.
Anyway
the main thing is that you saved Yuri.
Let's drink!
A party!
Pon's TV special "No Poning Way!" got incredible ratings.
The white-faced cop freaking out, the gunshots
and Pon's survival
were all caught on camera and broadcast live.
Sick people come from across the country.
How long will it continue?
Can I bear such nausea and headaches?
Have to be careful not to overuse my power.
Long time no see, big brother.
It's me, Chako.
It was my little sister, Chako.
Everyone was scared of "Whacko Chacko".
When she was in first grade, she stole a boat and set sail for America.
But she got caught in a storm.
After several days adrift, she landed on a deserted island.
For almost half a year, she kept from starving by eating seaweed.
She was rescued by an American patrol boat.
She immersed herself in research of seaweed.
Nobody knew what to do with Chako
only her grandad watched over her dearly.
She found weight loss properties in seaweed
and published a diet book in fifth grade.
Still in junior high Chako entered the beauty industry
and became the "shaman of seaweed".
The rumor was that you were dead.
Yeah, well, uh...
Mom and Dad were worried. Better call them.
Sorry 'bout that.
Oh, it's Mom. Good timing.
Hi, Mom? Chasuke's not dead after all.
I took the first flight here.
He's sitting right in front of me.
It's Mom.
Hello?
Chasuke? Where the hell have you been?
Sorry, Ma.
Some kind of son you are... So...
Got a girlfriend?
Bring her around next time.
When's the wedding? You picked a date, yet?
Erm, not yet. We have to talk about it...
You can have the wedding here.
Talk to your dad. Chasuke is on the phone.
Chasuke?Are you alive?
Come back home. We have a room for you.
Chako built us a new house. "Taj Mahal of Tosa".
"Taj Mahal"?
It's a lot smaller, but it's a dead ringer. A sightseeing spot in town.
Come take a look. We heard a rumor UNESCO is coming by next week.
Later, alligator.
I saw you on TV. What are you, a jackass?
I don't know what you're doin', but you can't keep playin' God.
Say what? I'm not playin'. I wanna help people in trouble.
Jackass. King of jackasses!
What'd you know?
Millions of people around the world have incurable diseases.
Many feel like dying because of it.
Now you're on TV saying you can cure it all.
You can't escape.
You'll have every needy person on earth counting on you.
If a kid is out there suffering, they become your responsibility.
For if they're not cured it's your fault.
If you ever get into trouble, you can come to me anytime.
I would blow all my money in the world to help you.
Well y'all. Take care of my big brother now, you hear?
Hey, the line hasn't budged in ages!
I'm sorry. Please wait.
Hey, what's going on?
We've been here forever.
I beg you...
We'd like to know how long we should wait.
Why don't you give us reserved time slots?
So we know when to come?
Yeah. We have jobs, you know.
I'm sorry. Please wait a little longer.
Are you all right?
Who? Who wrote this?!
She's a goner!
Fix it! Rewrite it now!
Who's the bastard that killed Yuri?!
Darling!
Mr. Angel!
My husband needs help! Please see him first!
I'm begging you!
Mr. Angel, help us!
He's all pale.
Mr. Angel, see us first!
Are you all right?
I'll go and check.
I'm going, too.
Don't say sorry. Hurry up!
I'm terribly sorry.
You can't leave that wheelchair there.
You're blocking the way to my store.
Oh, sorry.
Outta the way.
Are you all right?
You'll be OK. Don't worry.
Yuri!
Heal! Heal! Heal! Heal!
Yuri! Heal!
Heal! Heal! Heal!
Kansuke, what the hell did you write!
Are you gonna let Yuri die like this!
You said you'd back me up!
What the hell is this?
She's a goner!
Come on, do something, Chasuke!
Chas!
No, you can't go!
Chas! Chas!
The End
Clear the street!
This way!
Clear the street!
Get Mr. Angel to a hospital!
Outta the way!
Clear the street!
Make way! Please!
Chasuke!
Chasuke!
Chasuke!
