Why do we wanna survive?

So I have noticed that,

survival is not everyone's agenda

and listening to everyone's opinion on survival,

sometimes I feel the same way with them.

And I think the more and more I know now it's like,

we're just spiritual beings

then why do I need to survive, right?

And that was my question.

But I think that our life and our journey

is deeper than we can imagine.

So we're all on this journey of life.

And, um...

some people are gonna live a life of journey

and some won't.

It's not just about the bunkers.

I think people, um...

Are misunderstood. They think it's just about the bunker

and only a bunker.

No, I think it's more like also includes the state

and what the state has to offer.

And this is beautiful to live here and see this.

But once you leave here and go like 20 minutes

and you can go to Cascade Falls or Hot Springs,

and you can go to all these canyons.

And now that is nice.

The only thing we will worry about

would be like Wyoming Yellowstone.

and I don't know about the prevailing winds,

it will maybe,

we won't get affected as bad.

And I talked to the owner,

the creator of the app, I was like,

"Wow, that's incredible."

Like you look at the center,

it's always like very few things.

And then you look at everything else is like,

"God, I ain't going nowhere."

So it is the safest spot.

No, I didn't grow up with no,

my mom was a stripper.

I lived a stripper life in that sense of,

living in cars while your mom go work

and seeing things maybe you shouldn't have seen

and just living an experience that,

maybe it's not good for everyone, right?

So we was like, freedom,

it's like your mom leaves at six,

you know that you have to pick up the phone

like at a 10:00 or 11:00

to make sure you or she's in the hotel room

and that's it, right?

So we had no, um,

no supervision or nothing.

We just like free for all,

do whatever you want whenever.

So we just grew up ourselves in a sense.

So that's how I grew up.

I was never really scared

'cause I didn't really have anything,

you know, or anything.

Even Christmas, birthday,

everything sucked.

And then eventually you realize that,

you can do things yourself

and once you realize you do things yourself,

then you start doing things yourself

and stop depending on other people

and changing your mind set for the better I think,

so yeah.

So I think that childhood helped me

and I wasn't raised by my mom.

I was raised by the world.

Just living in every hotel, Miami Beach.

I mean every hotel,

I promise you every hotel in Miami Beach,

we lived in the 1980s.

We got my mom kicked out of everything.

We were just bad kids, you know?

We were just very active.

and one who is very organized

it took 38 minutes for a second alert to be sent out saying

there was in fact no missile threat to the archipelago.

But it raised serious questions.

What if there were a real missile headed to Hawaii

or LA or New York or DC?

Could the US government say shoot the missile down?

What should people do?

Well, joining me now to answer all that and more

is Alex Wellerstein,

a nuclear weapons historian,

and an assistant professor

at the Stevens Institute of Technology.

How long would it take for a missile

to get from North Korea to Hawaii?

- [Alex Wellerstein] You have to make some assumptions

about what kind of trajectory it'd be on,

but 30 minutes is a pretty good estimate.

- [Reporter] And how long would it be before-

- [Ed] I would say 20.

- know that such a missile had been fired.

What should people do?

There are still signs for fallout shelters.

Is there anything to do?

I mean, I realized in the fifties

people would hide under their desk,

which is absurd,

but is there anything non-absurd to do?

- [Alex Wellerstein] You can't with any reliability say,

if you do something you're gonna survive a nuclear attack.

What you can do is say we have studies that say that

if certain behaviors were carried out

over a large number of people,

the likelihood of those people surviving

changes quite a bit.

So in some sense,

the old "duck and cover" rule or take shelter,

that's a pretty good strategy.

- [Reporter] That was very useful actually, thank you.

- [Ed] So do you have a basement in your house?

would come to pass first?

- [Miller] Right now I think civil unrest.

I think civil unrest that could lead

to some financial unrest.

If those two ever got together,

we got so mad one towards another.

Let's just do it on political lines.

Say just Republicans, right?

Just make this easier.

Say for the Republicans and Democrats,

if they did that,

that could cause a serious problem in our country.

was the master of space time.

He thought that if something happened here

that shouldn't immediately and instantaneously

change something that is going on over there.

The principle of locality as we currently call it.

For Einstein, it's simply common sense

that if objects are separated in space,

for one to affect the other,

something must travel between them.

- So if you have everybody coming together,

at night this is gorgeous.

So you have everybody coming together.

So this would be the common area.

You have the ability to cook,

say like election year,

things go wild,

we open this up just for a couple weeks.

And we live here more casually than we do through,

an epidemic or something actually happened,

just looking at the cat.

And so unless there was like a real serious situation,

we could basically hang out in a nice way.

And that's why these facilities are done this way.

So over here we have the balcony.

And so this also serves a dual purpose.

One is a balcony,

but it's also considered a guard point,

a guard where we don't have it set up

like a bullet proof glass or nothing at this point,

it would need to be something maybe sandbags or, I mean,

if we ever did get to a place

where we needed to defend ourselves.

So it's set up to be able to see the guard tower

that's right here.

So you have our complex, right?

You got the log home,

120 foot shelter, log home, guard tower,

then that'll repeat itself three times.

So in a century,

it's just preparing for the worst,

but you get to enjoy it.

It's a beautiful spot.

And you could put a family in here,

but these generally sell for individuals.

Like my friend, Roy likes the aliens.

He'll go right there to make sure

to keep people where they are.

And you could do a couple for a room like this.

And this is another more couple/family,

could be a family situation.

So this is kind of more on the raw side.

Then all back here is food stores

and some of the NBC equipment.

Nuclear, biological, chemical. - What's that?

- So this is one of those suits that you put on

that'll protect you from any kind of basically known agent.

We have gas masks,

we have it all in case it's needed.

Yeah, so that's the idea,

just place to crash at the end of the day.

There's no Netflix to sit around and watch or anything.

I mean, this is just,

it's survival mode.

So in phase two,

we're doing more family set up rooms.

This actually folds down into a seat.

It's a couch that folds down into the bed.

So you got there, you got here,

then you have a loft.

It has a little chair,

there's electricity there and a desk for whoever needs it.

And then this would be a loft area for mom or dad

or throw the kids up there.

So this is the next model

that we're going with more of this.

So what we really rely on by policy

and what we really have on hand is the food stocks.

Now, this is shelf stable for 25 years.

We keep enough for four months per member.

And then obviously our long term is chickens, goats.

We keeps our overhead down

and we don't have to do a ton of this,

then we'll become a community.

So we have six, 10 by 10 rooms.

You see it's broken down three here, three here,

and then three on this side,

three on that side.

So here we have the full modern hospital bed.

That's an examining table.

So in case of the epidemic,

I have several.

Well, I guess during the gear you can't see 'em,

nine person tents and awning systems.

And basically the awning covers

where you can set up a decontamination point.

And then the tents are used in case of an epidemic situation

where we may have to just make sure everybody is separated.

There needs to be a sense of comfort or it's just not gonna,

it won't be good for anybody.

In April, we're gonna do a mock collapse.

And we're asking members to sign up,

so far we have 10,

they're gonna come out

and we're gonna play out the scenario.

I will have the compound be attacked,

no live ammunition or nothing.

But they'll have to practice how to check people in.

So in the army,

what we have is challenge and password,

so for example, if you would be coming up,

I would say, "Halt, who's there?"

You would say,

what would you say?

I then give you the challenge.

And then shower is the challenge.

And I would have privately already

given you the right password.

And then when you say password,

then you're allowed to come.

Then I verify who you are.

You get checked off on the list.

You're given your room assignment.

If you're somebody who buys them,

like I have people that buy memberships

and you just never hear.

So that's how I'm approaching it.

And that's how I'm trying to get

the sense of community right now.

But that's only me and them.

And that's why we wanna get people here,

get together as a group.

And so maybe in the summer,

I'll just have a property jamboree just for members or so,

I don't know.

I'll come up with something to try to just,

I'll continually try to bring people out.

It's a lot more work for me,

but in the end,

I think it would pay off in this scenario

that we're all thinking is possible.

- [Jenny] How long do you envision being here?

- Till I die unless something else changes.

I'm a all or nothing guy.

I just don't wanna live on other people's property.

I am like a home-ey.

I like to be home-ey,

whatever home is just, you know,

that sense it's yours and not somebody else's.

I mean, it's ours in a sense as a community.

So I don't feel like an alien in my own work day,

but it, yeah, my own little spot.

This could be it.

This could be roots.

I mean, I'm 54.

So I don't know how many years are left.

Not that I'm planning on not being around,

but I'm hard to kill.

So who knows?

I'll outlive 'em all.

and I've been around commercial construction

A lot of these are chemical suits.

antennas and radios.

One of the things that we did that other people don't do,

we hired a psychologist.

She was on the team at Biosphere I and Biosphere II.

She goes, "Overall, it's really simple, Larry,

you as the developer have to make life

as normal as you can here.

And let me clarify that for you,

you're gonna have a miniature Whole Food store in here."

She says, "You're gonna have a slate floor,

black ceiling, designer racks of stuff.

You're gonna have glass cases,

and people are gonna come down here.

You're gonna have little shopping carts.

This place has to feel alive.

You have to be alive here."

Garden green peas, re-fried beans,

lentils, pinto beans,

black beans and powdered milk,

which is a whole thing of powdered milk.

Creamy chicken noodle with dumplings.

Mexican tamale pie, Beef Stroganoff.

So they tell you which products you need and the recipes

and we've made some of these and they're delicious.

They're really, really good.

So we'll put cookies and cupcakes and cakes and brownies

and stuff to make.

And the kids will come down.

But here's those little shopping carts.

That's sea salt.

- [Jenny] Are people worried about the election?

- Some people are concerned about the election,

but that's an event.

We're like Switzerland,

because I'm the developer.

And I have to sell to people that are interested.

And it's way easier to find what people have in common

than to find differences.

And the differences that the people that are in here,

all these people are hardworking self made people,

they're millionaires by definition.

And they have families.

They're young, they're self-made,

and they all have great resumes and stuff,

but they get along, they're civil.

They're not this confrontational thing

that you keep seeing on TV and everything.

It's just, they believe what they see with their eyes

and they go like this

when people start telling 'em what they should be seeing.

Since COVID happened,

the interest in the kids,

because people being at home around their family

that they've seen now they're like,

"Who are these strangers I was living with."

And now they're like,

"Oh, I'm gonna be more involved.

And I'm gonna do,

oh, your place is perfect.

It's got this,

oh, this is so,

I wish I was there now because like,

oh, my kids are going off the walls."

But they take a look at it and they go,

"All right, I got good news and bad news.

The good news is,

I absolutely wanna buy a unit here.

Bad news is I have to sell this other property first.

And I don't know how long that's gonna take,

will you hold it for me?"

No, I'm tired of doing that.

I've been doing that for too long so I can't.

Listen, when there's cabs out in the doors open,

you can hear the-

So assuming that we didn't lose direct TV,

you could watch all the news and stuff like that.

But if the satellites went out,

there was damage or whatever

from whatever threat scenario we're in,

an EMP or whatever,

we've got thousands of movies that you can watch.

- [Jenny] Do you think that's likely, an EMP?

- Sure.

You have Korea. Electromagnetic pulse.

One of the things that Korea was always talking about doing

was their thought was they could lob a nuclear warhead over

here and detonated the atmosphere and the EMP would wipe out

90% of the computers and things in the US,

the banking system,

all the computers, cars, stuff.

Well, it wouldn't affect us.

- [Jenny] And so people would,

like, how do people know to come?

- You could live here if you want to.

I mean, what kind of a warning

do you get from an earthquake in California?

What kind of a warning do you get

from hurricanes in Florida?

A week?

You have a lot of time to get outta dodge

and you could get your ass out here,

but don't hide behind,

"Oh, what's the use of buying this?

If I can't get here in time because of some threat

I can identify."

If you don't wanna buy a bunker

and you're not interested in protecting your family,

then that's fine.

But don't say that you could think of a threat scenario

where it wouldn't work and give that the credence,

like that's the only event that's gonna happen.

Instead, why don't you look at like,

"Hey, can I protect my family

from 95% of the threats out there and go from there?"

Yeah, why don't you think that way.

From the top of this elevator shaft up here,

just under the dome to the inside bottom,

is 201 feet.

The elevator pits on the bottom,

so we can only go to level 14

we have to take stairs down to 15.

These are the satellite control

hooked up in the direct TV, satellite, Netflix, Hula,

all that stuff.

We can hold 3000 movies and 2,500 music CDs in here.

We've got lethal and non-lethal defensive systems here.

It's a video game.

We can hit people from in here

without sending anybody in harms way,

we can shoot 'em with a paint ball

or we can shoot them with a deadly round of munitions,

but we don't have to risk anyone.

- [Jenny] What do your neighbors think about?

- Who cares?

There's the guard right there.

He's currently operating his van.

This is the back your car.

See the parking lot.

You can see what he's looking at.

And here's the store room we just were.

Then here's the common area room upstairs.

We'll have group meals.

Somebody brings the dessert.

Someone brings a salad and the main course.

And the food is always delicious.

The kids will kind of huddle up in one area,

and the adults,

the girls were sitting over here by the fire place

and we had the fire on.

Then the guys were watching a movie.

We had some movie on over there

and people were playing pool,

and the place is just so full of life.

I mean, it's just amazing.

When I first built this, that woman,

the Italian woman,

she came in and saw it for the first time.

And she said,

"I know you told me this was gonna be a luxury bunker.

I thought it was to be a lot more utilitarian.

I didn't think it was gonna look like this."

She goes, "This is like a second home away from the city

that I can come out

and I don't have to worry about my kids being kidnapped

or the paparazzi being around or whatever.

I can be normal out here."

This one woman said her husband was bought in

and she was kinda like just along,

but she was like being the devil's advocate.

And she goes,

"So I can live anywhere?"

And I go, "Yeah, exactly."

She was like,

"What are you looking for?"

She goes, "Well, here's what I want."

She goes, "I want all the seasons covered.

So in New York I have a friend

that lives down near the Plaza

and she overlook Central Park,

gosh, to die for."

And she, and she's going,

this is her talking, she says,

"So, spring, summer, winter, fall.

And for each one of those,

I want a sunny day, a cloudy day,

a precipitation day."

She goes, "All these have to have sound."

She goes, "I want to hear the cabs honking and stuff.

I need the sounds of the city.

This would drive me crazy."

So I said, "Yep, we can do all that."

And I said, "But it's expensive.

So to get 25 days,

24 hour periods of filming at those points in New York,

that would take a year to get,

it's a hundred thousand dollars."

And she's like,

"I thought you said it was expensive."

Like I annoyed her.

(Larry laughs)

This is for, so. To each his own.

(machine whirling)

Now, how are your clients with guns?

Because I don't wanna,

this is a gun room.

And I'm on the fence about whether to show it to you or not.

What happens is people get up and say,

"Oh, these people are all just

a bunch of like military psycho people."

Well, I've done that and I've regretted it.

That's what's happened.

I went with PBS, Nova, CNN, and yeah,

there's nothing good that comes out of it.

They don't respond to your emails,

they don't give you two sides of the story.

It's just a terrible thing.

All right, I'll tell you the secret,

I don't like going home because when I go home

to my very expensive mattress with my family

and my nice house,

my family notices it and I notice it.

You don't sleep as good.

When my son knows it's summertime coming up

prior to this COVID year,

but about two weeks before they get out for school,

he goes, "Dad, can't wait to get down there

and get some of that silo sleep."

That's what he calls it.

He calls it silo sleep.

Apple slices, banana slices,

raspberries, blackberries, strawberries,

pineapple chunks, blueberries.

Our engineers estimate that these condos

will outlast the great castles of Europe.

They said that these will last more than a thousand years.

So these are multi-generational investments

that you put in a trust and you pass 'em

from generation to generation.

And so the people that bought here

like the idea that my kids know their kids

and someday they'll be the owners

and their kids will know each other.

And they'll have a safe haven because

there'll always be threats to the world, right?

It's just like been nuts so. (phone rings)

You know what happens in this society?

Somebody gets drunk.

Well, guess what?

You're gonna have to have a jail cell.

So we do.

We have an adult time out room.

We have a bar and a lounge,

and we've got a movie theater and we've got a spa.

We've got a continuing education classroom.

And we have a library, that's a Starbucks.

And we've got all these things that people can do here,

because that is what gives you the capability

of being off grid for extended period of times

and not have your people need advanced therapy

when they come out.

The only thing that is a real threat

would be a direct impact,

like a dinosaur extinction level.

If that hits somewhere in Kansas, I mean,

there's some things you just can't protect against you know?

Let's face it.

If you get hit by a incoming meteor

that wipes out a nuclear holding facility,

it was just your time.

I mean, you're not gonna get a warranty like that.

God wanted to see you,

that's all there is to it.

Go talk to the big man,

don't get in my face.
