Mr. Fleming, how does
an author tackle the problem

of selecting a name for
the hero of his stories?

When I started
to write these books in 1952,

I wanted a really flat, quiet name.

And one of my bibles out here is
James Bond’s Birds of the West Indies,

and I thought well now, James Bond,

now that’s a pretty quiet name

and so I simply stole it and used it.

Right now Police are investigating

I was 21 when I met him in London.

He came into the barbers
where I was working

and he was quite charming
and not bad looking I guess.

anybody prior to marrying them

that he used to give to me.

Well he told me that if ever I left him

he would steal my child
and he would kill me.

I was very scared.

so we were physically
locked in the house.

It got worse and worse.

Sometimes he got angry if I cooked
for him because he'd already eaten

and sometimes he'd be angry because
I hadn't cooked because he hadn't eaten.

You know, there are people out there
that are psychopaths.

I wouldn't say that
I was willing to take it.

He made me feel that I deserved it.

I had to get to the point
where I was more scared

to stay than I was scared to leave.

I woke up because
my son was crying

and I couldn't see
any reason why he was crying.

My husband had got his nails and
stuck them in the cuticle of the nail bed

and I could see that it was very painful.

It's... it's…

That's what made me make the decision.

I actually had to get the police
to break me out of my own home

and take me to the station.

He'd emptied my bank account

so I had five pounds left in my purse
and that was all.

I left him with the clothes on my back.

I think in that first year
we moved four times.

I couldn't go to my family’s-

I had to go to a family friend because
he knew where my family lived

and I couldn't, basically, see my family
for a long time after that.

I go to see a solicitor
and file for divorce

of which part of is a
‘Prohibitive Steps Order’

preventing him from
coming into the area.

But unfortunately...

all it does is serve
to pinpoint where you are.

That's when I realised that my ex-husband
didn't care about following the law.

All he cared about was
trying to get what he wanted.

SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND
Five Years Later

My son was the age to go to school.

We were told that my husband had died.

I was told that he was in a car accident.

I don't know how factual that is or not.

So I had informed the school

and shown them what
my husband looked like.

I was a little relieved when
I got told that he was dead,

I have to be honest about that.

I didn't want him to steal my
child like he had threatened.

I was unfortunately very naive.

I get a phone call from school

telling me not to go to
school to pick my son up,

that they think that
his father's outside.

There's a guy hanging around
and that they've phoned the police.

I was so scared.

He'd gone by the time
the police had got there.

He didn't get arrested or anything.

And this is when the police
advised you guys to change your names?

Yes.

He said that because they hadn't been
able to catch him

that we would probably be better off
trying to make ourselves invisible.

You know, not to go back to my maiden name

because obviously he knew what that was.

But to choose a
completely different name...

something which was
very popular in the UK...

something like ‘Smith’ or ‘Jones’…

Mr. Fleming, how does
an author tackle the problem of

selecting a name for
the hero of his stories?

I wanted a really flat, quiet name.

The best place to hide
something is in plain sight.

They are predictable like the seasons,

they come out pretty much
every two years like clockwork.

It is a little bit like
a plague of locusts,

it's crazy with the noise
that's created by it.

My god it's enormous
I mean everybody knows

James Bond,
everyone's seen the films.

I can never get that email address.

I'm nine pages down on Google

because all this other James Bond crap

that has nothing to do with me
comes up way before me.

And I thought, well now James Bond,
now that’s a pretty quiet name.

I'm actually not a huge James Bond fan

but I wanted a name that,
if somebody searched for that name,

they would have to spend hours
looking through so much stuff

to be able to find…

their son.

In 2006, I applied at the tax agency
for the name James Bond.

The Tax Agency in Sweden
are not very easy to work with

when it comes to name changes.

So I wrote “Bond” first

and “James” afterward.

So that I could say:

“My name is Bond James, Bond.”

It went through in 2007...

and 2007 is

0-0-7

and that only happens

one time in every 1000 years.

and so we had
people calling, saying

that was just at my house?”

And so they would call
and say, you know,

“OK well James Bond will be
coming out to do your evaluation.”

They're like,
“The one that's wanted for murder?!”

It was a scary situation.

I mean real scary.

That's where your name
was not an advantage.

I named my son James Bond

and the more of us there are,
the less tickets I have to buy.

All of us have
different middle names.

My Dad's middle name is Lee,

my middle name is Neal,

James' middle name is Andrew

and his son's
middle name is Cesar.

None of us are juniors.

Even though you have this family tradition

of handing down the James Bond name

had a conversation about whether or not

When I told her, you know,

I'd like to go ahead
and pass the name down,

we actually had a few
different conversations.

The first one was

When I started football

they made me number 7
and my nickname's 007 on the team.

They always go
“It's James Bond.”

They always do that.

By you doing this film,

this in a way has
become a therapy for me.

I am much less annoyed by it
now than I was in the beginning,

partially because I'm friendly with
another half dozen James Bonds

that I would not have
known were it not for you.

It's a pain in the ass.

My father was a James Bond fan.

The house that I grew up in,
the phone numbers were 007.

So it's not like I'm the only
person I know who deals with it

and there is kind
of a quality...

of a support group if you will.

SOMEHWHERE IN ENGLAND

I had to change my name too,
because we were a family

and we got on a train
and we left as the Bonds

and we never returned.

I remember the night we left
quite well.

I just remember
my mum saying “Come on...

we're going now.
It's gonna be OK.”

It's a big day for James Bond
fans because the new 007 film

“No Time to Die” is
launched in London later.

At the time, I had no idea
what I'd let myself into

for the rest of my life.

It definitely built my character
and made it stronger.

Made me who I am today.

I really don't care what
anyone thinks about me.

It's not just a name
that defines somebody.

It is the way that
they're brought up.

I think James is a really nice person.

He's very caring.
He's very protective.

James suits being James Bond.

I still think that I've done
the right thing, actually.

What matters is the fact that
he's never found us since.

My mother's a very clever person.

She thinks of a good idea
she'll be like boom, do it.

My original name?

No matter how many
times I'm asked this,

no one will never
know the answer to it.

That's not me.
My father gave me that name

and he is no part
of me whatsoever.

If he ever come near me
or my family ever again

I would hurt him.

I absolutely hate
the thought of him finding us.

So the fact that
picking that as my name

had something to with him

not being able to get in
contact with us is just brilliant.

I suppose that one day James will
look after me and protect me

when I'm an old lady.

If someone's giving me grief

I'd probably just chase them with
my walking stick and hit them myself.

Don't forget I'm a Bond as well.
